CAREER COUNSELING REPORT 2017-18

Vidya Vikas Academy promotes career guidance and counseling program as it develops an individual’s competencies in self-knowledge, educational and occupational, exploration, and career planning. Students of class 10 answered three Standardized Psychometric Test namely: Aptitude Test (DBDA) , Interest Inventory and Personality Test (MAP-T).The above tests were conducted in the month of June and July 2017.

Reliable reports and guidance has been provided to the students on the basis of the test results, with the complete understanding of a student on the basis of their Aptitude, Personality and Interest. The reports of the same were given to the students on Fedena which was followed by personal counseling session for interested students and parents.

Since the importance of planning a career is a continuous process of thinking about one’s interests, values, skills and preferences, a Career Counseling Fair was conducted on the 4th of January,2018, for the students and parents of classes 9, 10, 11 and 12. Mr. Shadab Siddiqui the founder of Career Scribes ( Mumbai ) was the Resource Person for the event. The event was scheduled as follows :

8:30 to 10:30 Class 10 - A full fledged program covering options from science, commerce and humanities 10:45 to 11:45 Class 9 - An introductory session giving an overview of career options 12:00 to 2:00 Class 11 & 12 - A full fledged program with focus on science careers with some coverage of non-science careers like law, hotel management which are open to all streams. The class teachers of the respective classes were also present for the sessions. The students and parents found the programme very informative and all were provided with a variety of career options available. ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH OF DECEMBER - SOLO SINGING

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words’’

A solo singing activity was organized in the month of December

for the students of classes 1-5. The students were asked to sing

a song of their own choice. The students sang classical,

bollywood and also in languages like Konkani and Marathi. The

classical songs reminded us of our rich cultural heritage. It was

a wonderful performance and the teachers were convinced that

great efforts were taken by the parents and the students to

present it.

The participating students were judged on the basis of

a) Pitch, rhythm, melody

b) Voice modulation

c) Choice of song

d) Overall performance

The final judgment was made by the class teachers of the respective classes and the top five students were

selected. The teachers lauded the singing talent of the students and advocated that music plays an important role

in inculcating humane virtues.

The students earnestly participated in the activity.

This fun filled activity witnessed an enthusiastic participation by the students.

PONGAL,LOHRI & MAKAR SANKRANTI CELEBRATION

A special assembly was held to celebrate the festivals of Pongal, Makarsankranti and Lohri, on the 12th of January 2018, by the Pre-primary section of Vidya Vikas Academy .

The teachers discussed the significance of the festivals. The highlight of the celebration was the children dancing around the pongal pot and the bull taming race, followed by the flying of kites and the Bangra and the Gidda dance performed by the Jr.Kg. A children.

A special song called “uddi Patang” was sung by all the children.

The assembly was conducted by Tr. Monica, Tr. Ninoshca and Tr. Genesia.

HEALING HERBAL PLANTS EXHIBITION

An exhibition on Herbal Plants was held on Saturday, 13th January 2018 at the T.T. Plaza. The objective of the exhibition was to create awareness about the importance of medicinal plants and to include it in our daily life to make our children healthier and disease free.

The exhibition was inaugurated by the Principal, Mrs. Joble Bijoy and the Vice Principal, Mrs. Tania Monteiro. Samples of 16 herbal plants were displayed.

Students of class 6, 7 and 8 explained the medicinal uses of various herbal plants exhibited. Charts describing the plants were also prepared and presented. Free samples of herbs such as lemon grass, hadjod and kirayte were distributed to the parents. Samples of food items made out of herbal plants like lemon grass tea, mint leaves pakodas, curry leaves chutney, kokum juice were also displayed.

The exhibition was very informative. A feedback book was kept at the exit for parents to provide comments.

REPORT OF THE 19TH ANNUAL ATHLETIC MEET

Yet another successful Annual Athletic Meet of Vidya Vikas Academy was held on January 20, 2018 at Raia Panchayat Stadium. Mr. Gurudattta D. Bhakta, President of the Goa Judo Association was the Chief Guest. The 19th Athletic Meet of Vidya Vikas Academy commenced at 1430 hrs with a formal inaugural sequence of introduction and felicitation of the Chief Guest, welcome dance, flag hoisting and school anthem. This was followed by a house wise marching competition with all the contingents marching to the beat of the school band.

Mr. Gurudatta D. Bhakta declared the sports meet open and then handed over the torch of glory to the sports personalities who participated at State and National Competition in various sports like Chess, Skating, Badminton, Karate, Table Tennis, Gymnastic, Archery, Swimming and Yogasana for torch relay. Grazielle Serrao the Head Girl of Vidya Vikas Academy led the athletics for sportsman oath.

A wonderful display of strength was presented by the students at the Tug of war finals.

Final races of various categories - U-12, U-14, U-17, U-19 Boys and Girls for 100 mts, 200 mts and relay were conducted and all the finalists participated with great zeal and energy. The Ball drill, yogasana, flag drill, pyramid and aerobics added much more to the success of the event.

Mr. Bhakta in his speech appreciated the efforts and hard work of the sports teachers, in particular to the meticulous planning and execution of the same. He encouraged the students to be more inclined to sports activities. Mr. Bhakta's minute observation and appreciation gave a boost to the staff and students of Vidya Vikas Academy.

The event was concluded with prize distribution followed by vote of thanks by the Principal, lowering of the school flag and National Anthem.

The Annual Athletic Meet was coordinated by Sir Omana Kuttan G., Sir Sidharth Faldessai, Tr. Balika Phaldessai and Tr. Sonia Naik.

SPECIAL ASSEMBLY ON THE BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF SWAMI VIVEKANAND

The World Youth Day was observed on the 23rd of January, which coincided with Swami Vivekanand’s birth anniversary, therefore a special assembly was conducted by some students of classes 6 and 7. The objective of observing the day was to create a greater confidence in teachers and to create a positive school environment,to develop in students a heightened awareness of the event and participate accordingly and for Teachers and students to experience an enhanced ability to learn and work collaboratively. The programme began by garlanding Swami Vivekanand’s image. The assembly was planned well and it started off with a special prayer followed by some thought provoking quotes.To promote World Youth Day, the students of class 6 presented a cheerful dance. Zoraine, class 6 student enlightened the audience with a short speech on “ the life of Swami Vivekanand “. The assembly concluded with a short video clip on the teachings of Swami Vivekanand which highlighted the main goal of having this assembly. Overall it was an informative and fun filled assembly. Tr. DETAILED ASSESSMENT BY ASSET AT VVA CAMPUS

ASSET conducted a DETAILED ASSESSMENT program for classes 8A, 8B and 8C at academy on 24 th January’2018. The assessment was in Mathematics on two topics -Rational Numbers and Properties Of Quadrilateral that were already covered by Mathematics teacher in Term I.

Classes 8C and 8B performed better than 8A. The students were given four sets of paper, where the questions were jumbled. There were 25 questions with multiple choice. Students were given one period of 35 minutes to answer the same. This exam gave the students an insight about their knowledge of the topic and understanding/application.

The teacher also got a feedback about the areas where majority students faltered and the concepts which were not clear to the students. The program is excellent in its own way and if implemented at VVA will surely help to uplift students performance in Mathematics.

SNEHA DHARA PROGRAM AT VVA

As part of our school program- Sneha Dhara, a group of students of class 9C along with their teachers visited the orphanage to show their love towards the children. They visited the Lar- Shelter home for women, on the 26th of January 2018. A total of 60 women are being sheltered in this home which is run by the Carmelite Priests. A collection drive was carried out in school where staff and students were requested to contribute toiletries, stationary and cash for the orphans. We received an amazing response from the staff and students in terms of goods and cash. The students conducted a short program to entertain the children of the orphanage. They sang songs, presented a skit and also played games. Sr. Theresa, their caretaker and the children were thrilled to spend time with us and expressed their gratitude with a beautiful thank you song. The team members included Tr. Vichye Vaz, Tr. Kalpita Lotliker, attendant Mansi and students of class 9C (Yolan, Clyde, Abdul, Alston, Lleyton, Criselda, Ishita and Jelsh). PRE PRIMARY TALENT CONTEST

The late Advocate H.M.N Gaunekar pre-primary Talent contests was held on the 27th of January 2018 at Ganesh Daivajna Auditorium. The students of the Jr.Kg. welcomed the audience with a song “A whole new world”. The singing contest was held for the Nursery students and the judges were Mrs Tanula Cotta e Fernandes and Miss Vanessa Gonsalves. The tiny tots enthralled everyone with their melodious voices. The elocution contest was held for the Jr.Kg. Students on the topic “The festival I like the most.” The judges for the contest were Mrs Clotilda Goes and Mrs Celina Cardozo. The programme was concluded with the Sr.Kg. Quiz with their enthusiastic quiz master Savia Gomes.

VIDYA VIKAS ACADEMY BAGS GLOBAL INNOVATIVE SCHOOL AWARDS 2018

It was yet another proud moment when the Global Innovative School Awards (GISA) 2018 was awarded to Vidya Vikas Academy, Margao, Goa for its exemplary performance in 5 areas- Impact, Academic Performance, Cultural Inclusion, Social Awareness and Technology Infusion. The award was bestowed upon VVA for being in the stellar list making VVA one of the best performing school globally. Among the many honours received by the school, this was truly a majestic & an inspirational achievement for the school. BITS Pilani Dubai Campus in association with Phyzok hosted the Global Millennial Conference in Dubai on 27th January 2018. The theme of the Conference was ‘Demystifying Millennial Culture and Innovation in Education’. Global Innovative school Awards (GISA) 2018 was presented during this conference. The schools from all over India and across the Gulf countries competed with each other to qualify for the Global Innovative School Awards. The award consisted of a Citation and Trophy & was received by both, the President of Vidya Vikas Mandal Mrs. Sheela Gaunekar and the Principal of Vidya Vikas Academy Mrs. Joble Bijoy. “We are extremely delighted and proud to receive the prestigious Global Innovative School Award and the credit goes to the Management Members, Principal, Staff and Students for their invaluable contribution” said Mrs. Sheela Gaunekar. In this changing era of globalization and technological revolution, VVA focuses on delivering excellence to students in all spheres and bringing in an innovative change in Education, which will be the greatest contribution that one can make to society.

NATIONAL ANALYTICAL APTITUDE TEST (NAAT) AT VVA

NATIONAL ANALYTICAL APTITUDE TEST is an all India level test that gives students of classes( 3 -12) an opportunity to show their intellectual talent. There were two rounds for the exam. Around 40 students from Vidya Vikas Academy participated in Round -1 out of which 9 students moved to Round- 2. Vidya Vikas Academy was the centre for Round-2 NAAT examination. Round -2 was conducted on 28th January’ 2018. The paper was for two hours comprising of Mathematical ability, English skill, Analytical ability and Logical reasoning. REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION

Vidya Vikas Academy celebrated the 69th Republic Day with zeal and fervor on Friday 26th January, 2018. The programme began by the Vice Principal Mrs. Tania Monteiro unfurling the National Flag followed by the National Anthem.

A speech in Hindi was delivered by Miss Vani Laxmi of Class 6C

emphasizing the importance of the day on this occasion. A soldier dance was performed by the students of Senior Secondary depicting the sacrifice made by our dedicated soldiers at the borders. The pupils of Pre-Primary sang a patriotic song ” Nanha Munha Rahi”. A patriotic dance ”Vande Mataram” was performed by the students of class 6 with great zeal and energy. The pupils of Class 9 sang patriotic song “Jai Ho “.

Certificates and trophies won at different competitions were given by Vice - Principal to the prize winners. The programme was compered by Miss Anushka Mitra of Class 7 B. Tr. Archana Verma proposed a Vote of Thanks.

There was a Live Streaming of the programme at four different

locations in the school. It was co-ordinated by Sir Pruthviraj Dessai, Tr. Pradnya Nadkarni, Sir Akshay Chari and Sir Rupesh Shirodkar(System Administrator, VVM). The programme concluded with the National Song “Vande Mataram”.

WORKSHOP ON VEDIC MATHEMATICS AT VVA CAMPUS

Vidya Vikas Academy had an opportunity to conduct a Vedic Mathematics workshop in school. Mr. Sagar Sakordekar, Director of SRS Vedic Mathematics Academy had a two hours session with students of classes 6 to 8. The objective of this workshop was to cultivate interest for numbers and eliminate the Math phobia present in students. Vedic Mathematics is an ancient branch of Mathematics that sharpens the mind, increases mental ability and intelligence. It also develops left and right sides of the brain by increasing visualisation and concentration ability. VALUE EDUCATION CHART ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH (Classes 6 to 9) Value Education Chart/ Collage Making Competition was conducted for the students of classes 6 to 9. It was a house- wise competition. The students enthusiastically participated in the activity and made lovely charts on different values such as respect, honesty, kindness, leadership, friendship, patriotism etc.

The best chart was selected from each division and was displayed on the house boards. The Red House was declared the overall winner of this activity. CHARACTER ENACTMENT ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH ( Classes 1 to 5) Students of Class 1- 5 participated in Character Enactment activity during the activity periods and best five contestants were selected. Objectives of the activity were: 1. To develop the child 's imagination as they see themselves in a fantasy world and make - believe stories. 2. Through this activity students brought out their acting talent. 3. To develop confidence in the students by giving them an opportunity to perform on the stage and speak before the audience. 4. To boost the confidence of the juniors by watching the seniors performance. The finale was held on 30th January. The five selected students from class 4 and class 5 performed. SENIOR SECONDARY SECTION

BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP

Vidya Vikas Academy, not only encourages its pupils to excel at academics but also at sports and other co curricular activities. Curt Aron Rois Coutinho, a student of class 11B had participated at the state level, Late Rasik Memorial All Goa Major Ranking Badminton Championship, held at Fatorda, Margao in August 2017 and bagged the first place in U-17 doubles and second place in U-17 singles. He also partook in the State Junior Badminton Championship, in July 2017 at Sanquelim, and was awarded the first place in U-17 doubles and third place in U-17 singles. He made the school proud by participating at National level Badminton Championship, held in August 2017 organized by All India West Zone at Vadodara, Gujarat and victoriously won the BRONZE Medal in Junior Mixed Team Event. He also participated in Junior National Badminton Championship organized by Assam Badminton Association under the auspices of Badminton Association of India in Guwahati, Assam in the month of December.

CAREER COUNSELLING

Every student faces the question of ‘what next’ after class 12. It is at this point that a career counsellor steps in and helps the child overcome this predicament. Vidya Vikas Academy, Senior Secondary Section organised a seminar on career counselling for class 12 students and their parents on 4th January, 2018. The session was conducted by Mr Shadab Sidiqui who informed the students about multiple courses available in Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Medicine, Engineering, Para- Medical and Architecture spread out all over the country. He also introduced them to general courses like BBA, BMS and so on. He also highlighted some certificate courses which can be undertaken by the students simultaneously while pursuing their Bachelor’s degree. He advised them to prepare for national level and college level entrance exams to meet the needs of the competitive world. He also enlightened them about the pros and cons associated with each course. It was an informative session for the students and as well as for their parents. It opened new doors of horizon for the students, to explore multiple career choices available at their disposal.

NATIONAL YOUTH DAY

A special assembly was conducted by the students of Class 11 A, on 12th of January 2018 to commemorate “National Youth Day”. This day was declared so by the Government of India, in the year 1984, in honor of Swami Vivekananda, who was born on 12th January 1863. This initiative was taken by the Government to inspire all youth of India towards the philosophy of Swami Vivekananda. A video was also screened based on the significance of this day. The assembly was concluded by reading out meaningful quotes by Swami Vivekananda to implant the seeds of great thoughts into the minds of the students. The assembly was coordinated by Sir Agnelo.

VVA STUDENTS WIN AT SCIENCE EXHIBITION

Students of Senior Secondary Section of Class 11th participated in the Twelth Annual Science Exhibition organized by Shree Damodar Higher Secondary School of Science, Comba, Margao in association with the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, Government of Goa on 10th January & 11th January 2018 at Babu Naik Hall, Davorlim. VVA STUDENTS EXCEL AT PBISE EXAM

Students of class 12 participated in PBISE (Pre-Board International Scholarship Exam). PBISE is an All India online diagnostic and preparatory test for Mathematics and Biology Students in CBSE. The exam provides students with diagnostics based on their preparation level in all topics of Grade 12 as per their Knowledge, Understanding and Application along with National Percentile much ahead of actual board exam.

Apart from providing data-based feedback and recommendations to prepare for Board Exams, PBISE opens up opportunities to the students for scholarships and provisional admissions for reputed undergraduate programmes. The online exam was conducted on 4th and 5th January 2018.Sarvagnya Jatti in PCM, Nathan Fernandes, Aditi Naik and Aiman Nurany in PCB excelled in PBISE exam. They were among top 1000 students of India who got following opportunities: Provisional Admission at BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, Scholarships worth INR 7 Lakhs to 9 Lakhs each, Complimentary Entry Pass (worth INR 15,000 each) for each student and 1 accompanying parent for Global, Millennial Conference on 27th Jan 2018 in Dubai and Stay, food and airport pick up – drop for Student and Parent. INDIAN NATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR (INSEF)

Indian National Science and Engineering Fair (INSEF) was held in Bangalore on 11th January 2018. All the Gold Medalist from the regional level were selected for this programme. Participants from various states across India like Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir participated with zeal and enthusiasm. At the final stage of this event Nikhil Dinesh Raikar student of class 11 A won the Fifth Gold Medal for his project on Bacterial Cellulose-The future Bio-Material. The 4th and 5th Gold medalist will be participating in INESPO (International Environment and Sustainability Project Olympiad) -International Science Fair which will be held in Holland. It was a great and an enriching experience for the participants.
