A TORAH MESSAGE FROM RABBI JAY

Synthesizing A Psalm How wonderful is it when one can interject personal experience into prayer? Last Shabbat, as I was leading services, I took note of a simple, yet incredibly powerful, verse in a Psalm that is featured prominently in our liturgy. I am referring

to the fourth stanza of Psalm 93 which, in addition to being the final Psalm of Kabbalat Shabbat, is also the Psalm we recite for Friday during the morning service. The reason this Psalm is included in the Friday liturgy is because its basic theme is centered on the completion of the world and God's coronation as King. The parallel to the sixth day of the week is clear. God, having finished the work of creating the world, is now ready to sit on His throne, take a well deserved rest, and survey all He has created. For reasons unknown, as I read the Psalm last Shabbat, that fourth verse jumped out at me; forced me to think. It is translated thusly: "above the crash (sounds) of the sea and its many powerful

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."

breakers, powerful is the height (awesomeness) of God". And as I was leading the congregation in davening, it struck me that the poet, in those few, uncomplicatedly picturesque words, captured the power of the ineffable. What a wonderful vision. I recalled the numerous times I have found myself in the ocean's breakwater, just where the waves curl over and pound the surf. And as I stood there praying, I literally felt the sheer force that was borne in the rumbling tumble; brief chaos in the form of a salty froth. And as the waves toss us about, like so many pieces of cork, God laughs because those white caps might as well be cotton balls to the Deity; on God the waves have no affect at all. Knowing that God is there and more powerful than that thundering ocean surf is, somehow, comforting. As if, when we are reciting this Psalm, we are saying that whatever huge force may rage against us, God, my God, your God, our God, can shield us from it. That simple acknowledgement of human frailty as compared with God's immenseness, taken together with our yearning for God's companionship, seems such a wonderful vision of where we are in the universe. The Psalm as a centering tool. What a way to make the transition into Shabbat. Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay
