From the
Volunteer
Coordinator Happy Spring!
After a bustling winter,
we’re gearing up for another busy few
months at the Museum. In April, we’ll kick
off with a brand new program, Nordic
Nights , an after-hours event. It will take
place on the first Thursday of every month,
and feature extended hours (until 8 pm)
and light programming (tours, film
screenings, crafts, etc.) We are very excited
about this new initiative and look forward
to your ideas to make it even better!
Spread the word!
Our Auktion will be held on April 18 at the
downtown Hyatt, and as usual, we’re
relying on your support, as day-of-event
volunteers, attendees, and/or donors of
unique and exciting items or experiences.
See page 5 for more about getting
involved.
On June 1, the Volunteer Council will host
the annual Spring Tea , to which all are
warmly invited. And if that’s not enough,
Mark Your Calendar! Save the dates for these upcoming
volunteer opportunities.
Northern Lights Auktion: April 18
Syttende Mai: May 17
Viking Days: August 22-23
Yulefest: November 21-22 *Stay tuned! Other exciting programs and
events may be added to the calendar!

Spring 2015
come back at noon the following Monday, June
8 for the Volunteer Potluck.
And somehow it’s not too early to start thinking
about Viking Days, on August 22-23! Mark your
calendars and start thinking about where you’d
like to volunteer. We have begun selecting
volunteers to serve in leadership positions, so if
you, or someone you know, is interested in
being extra-involved this year, please let me
know. Remaining positions include Volunteer
Assistant, Performance Coordinator, and Grill
Master.
Our Museum community recognizes the
importance of volunteering by celebrating
National Volunteer Week, which is April 12-18.
We are again participating in the Reciprocal
Admissions Program, and I encourage you to
take advantage of this opportunity to visit other
organizations. See page 6 for more details.
The Nordic Heritage Museum will formally
celebrate our own volunteers at the Volunteer
Appreciation Dinner and Awards Ceremony on
May 27, and we are very much looking forward
to this opportunity to say “thank you” for all that
you do! This also your chance to support your
own community of volunteers . If you have a
volunteer who you wish to nominate for special
recognition by the Museum, please let me know
by May 11.
On behalf of the Museum’s staff, thank you for
all you do to help us share the Nordic Spirit. We
couldn’t do it without you!
Sincerely, Michael
P.S. Please send me and update if your contact
information or your volunteer availability or interest
has changed.

Staff Update Welcome Fred Poyner IV,
Collections Manager We are thrilled to welcome Fred Poyner IV as our new
Collections Manager. Fred is an art historian and author
who holds a bachelor of arts in Art History from
Western Washington University and a master of arts in
Museum Studies from the University of Nebraska at
Lincoln. For nine years, he worked with the Washington State Historical
Society as a collections curator for the James A. Wehn Art Collection and
many other collections, exhibitions and programs . Welcome, Fred!
A Guide to the Donations Process I have something I want to donate to the Museum? What
should I do? Can I drop it off? It’s a question we’ve all been asked. The Museum does not
accept donations without prior contact with Collections staff.
There is a well-defined process for considering items that will
strengthen its collections.
Here’s how it happens.
• Potential donor contacts collections staff and describes
their object(s) and its history.
• Potential donor fills out the Potential Collection Donation
Questionnaire and returns it to the Registrar.
Photographs may also be requested. The Questionnaire
may be obtained from the Museum website or by
contacting the Registrar.
• The Collections Committee meets once a month to review
potential donations, to determine if they are appropriate
for the collection. There are several factors that go into
the decision:
♦ Does it fit the mission of the museum and terms
of the collection policy?
♦ Does it have significant history or
documentation?
♦ What is its physical condition?
♦ Do we already have one (or more)? Does this one
have more history or better condition?
♦ Does the Museum have resources to take care of
the object?
• Collection staff contacts potential donor about the
decision of the committee.
♦ If accepted, donor delivers object to the museum;
donor is responsible for any shipping costs.
♦ If not accepted and object is in the Museum
under a Temporary Custody Receipt,
Museum will follow potential donor
instructions as indicated on the Receipt.
What happens next?
• Donor signs Deed of Gift transferring legal title to the
museum. The item is now considered museum
property and cannot be returned to the donor.
• Registrar gives the item a unique tracking number
and the object is added to the database.
• Collections staff prepares the object for storage.
• Object is assigned a storage location and that location
is recorded in the database.
• The object is now ready to be exhibited at the
museum or loaned to another institution.
• Only a small portion of the collection is exhibited at
any one time. There are a couple of reasons. One is
the size of the museum’s exhibit space. Also, long-
term exhibition can cause damage and shorten the
life of many types of objects.
What happens when an object goes on exhibit?
• Object is selected for inclusion in an exhibit.
• Collections or exhibition staff retrieves object from
storage and prepares it for exhibit.
• Temporary location of object is recorded in collection
database.
• Exhibition staff places object on exhibit.
If you have additional questions about the Donations
Process, please contact the Collections Staff:

In Memory We fondly remember our dear friends who passed away this winter. Each was a strong supporter of the
Museum and worked hard to advance its mission in different ways. We cherish their commitment, cele-
brate their contributions, and will miss them dearly.
If you have photographs or memories of those who have passed on, please consider sending them to me.
I will create a slide who in remembrance to present at the Spring Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.
