Inniskillin Okanagan Estate inniskillin�com | BC VQA

In 1994, Inniskillin was established in the south Okanagan Valley in British Columbia� Inniskillin’s founders, Donald Ziraldo and Karl Kaiser, had been watching the region’s developments and had a keen desire to give Niagara-based Inniskillin a presence in the Okanagan� They located rich vineyard land and a winery setting and launched Inniskillin Okanagan�

After overseeing wine production for two vintages Kaiser left winemaking to Sandor Mayer, a Hungarian born and trained viticulturist and winemaker� Mayer was a natural as he had developed the winery’s 23-acre Dark Horse Vineyard the previous year and had won the respect of the founders� International accolades have poured in for Inniskillin over the years – most notably for its Icewine and single varietal reds and whites� The winery produces distinct world-class wines in three tiers: Reserve, Single Vineyard and the Discovery Series, which offers unique small-lot wines as Mayer continues his quest to find varieties that excel in the Okanagan Valley�

Inniskillin Wines, founded by Donald Ziraldo and Karl Kaiser, with wineries and vineyards in the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario and the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, was granted the first winery license in Ontario since Prohibition� In Niagara, Karl Kaiser continued to produce Icewine until 2005 when Bruce Nicholson became director of winemaking in 2007� Nicholson, one of Canada’s most awarded winemakers, has followed in the footsteps of the co-founders’ spirit of excellence and innovation� Inniskillin has gained international recognition for its award-winning Icewines and plays a major role in the international success of Canadian wines�

Nk’Mip Cellars (pronounced “in-ka-meep”) is North America’s first aboriginal owned and operated winery� Overlooking the shores of Osoyoos Lake in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, the winery sits on natural desert land surrounded by the stunning contrast of sagebrush and vineyards�

The Osoyoos Indian Band shares its rich history and traditions with those who visit the winery� The architecture – designed and constructed to display native art and artefacts – enhances the tour experience� Nk’Mip Cellars is open year-round with seasonal patio foodservice and special events that celebrate native traditions� The winery is part of the Nk’Mip Resort, a one-of-a-kind cultural and experiential four-season aboriginal tourism destination featuring premium accommodation� A cultural centre and full-service spa are offered in addition to winery touring and tasting, gourmet dining and desert golf�

Using grapes grown onsite and from the Band’s own 30-year-old Inkameep Vineyard, winemaker Randy Picton produces wines in two tiers: Nk’Mip Cellars and the reserve Qwam Qwmt series� The wine portfolio includes a Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Merlot, Shiraz, Meritage, and a Riesling Icewine�

Osoyoos Larose BC VQA

Osoyoos Larose is the product of a unique partnership between Bordeaux-based Groupe Taillan and Canadian-based Vincor International� The winery’s name reflects its roots� “Osoyoos” refers to the location of the vineyards overlooking scenic Osoyoos Lake in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia; “Larose” refers to Château Gruaud-Larose, one of a number of prestigious estate wineries owned by Groupe Taillan in Bordeaux, France�

The partners’ goal is to work with the classic Bordeaux grape varietals – Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec – to create Canadian wines of global stature� Introduced to the international wine market in 2003, Osoyoos Larose uses its state-of-the-art facility in Oliver, British Columbia, to create superb wines from 90 acres of prime vineyard land�

From the exceptional terroir of the south Okanagan Valley come classic Bordeaux-style wines, rich in character and personality and crafted by viticulturist and winemaker Pascal Madevon� Classically trained in France, Madevon was intrigued at the prospect of making wine in Canada and relocated in 2002� The winery makes two wines: Le Grand Vin, first made from the 2001 harvest; and Pétales d’Osoyoos, first made from the 2004 vintage� The wines are available in limited release in select markets across Canada, England, France and the US�

Founded in 1979 on the outskirts of the quaint town of Summerland by Harry McWatters, Sumac Ridge Estate Winery is the oldest operating estate winery in British Columbia� A true innovator, McWatters was instrumental in founding the region’s Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) program along with the planting of the south Okanagan Valley�

In 1992, McWatters and partners were one of the first groups to make the fortuitous decision to plant their now highly acclaimed 115-acre Black Sage Vineyard primarily to red grape varieties� The winery already had significant plantings of white varieties Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc� The red grape plantings allowed Sumac Ridge to lead the market with premium red wine production and created the popular demand for Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir�

The wines are crafted by Jason James who has been at Sumac Ridge for 5 years� The winery also creates Méthode Classique sparkling wines and Icewine� Open year-round, Sumac Ridge Estate Winery offers tours, a retail shop, a wine tasting bar, and a private Founder’s Tasting Room� The winery is also home to the highly praised Cellar Door Bistro which serves exceptional regional cuisine� Sumac Ridge Estate Winery was proud to be an Official Wine Supplier of The Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games�
