fter expending nearly a quarter of a

century in efforts to preserve and expand

our fledgling community, we now have the

opportunity to reflect upon the tremendous

siyata dishmaya that we were zoche to.

Take a quick glance at our prospering neighborhood,

abounding with Batei Midrashim, yeshivos, schools,

shiurim and beautiful homes filled with Torah: it’s

difficult to believe how our road to growth was

encumbered by so many challenges along the way.

In the legal battle waged against our religious identity,

our ability to develop and flourish in the heart of the

Monsey community was effectively at stake. Yet, with

the help of HaKadosh Baruch Hu, and after much effort

expended on our part, we prevailed.

We now have the z’chus to be nearing the culmination of

years of perseverance. In fighting for the rights to

expand our shul and subsequently our neigh-

borhood, ours became the community which

broke boundary lines. Khal Mishkan Yosef’s

role in taking the plunge many years ago is the

catalyst for so much of what we have today.

As we enter the final phase of construction on our new

building, with the generous help and support of you –

hough it may be hard to believe, the not-so-silent

reason for the Village of Airmont’s formation in

1991 was to “keep those Jews from Brooklyn out of

here.” A quarter of a century later, we’re pleased to report

that the plan was wholly ineffective. Today, as Yiddishkeit

thrives in South Monsey, our community’s success

can clearly be attributed to Yad Hashem, via a handful

of individuals who took it upon themselves to fight the

rampant injustices and discrimination that we faced.

When a small number of families began to daven at

the home of Rabbi and Rebbetzin Sternberg, they were

subject to much harassment and surveillance. The newly

formed Village passed restrictive zoning laws making it

illegal to hold group worship in a private residence. The

laws also made it impractical and impossible to establish

a “legal” synagogue. Effectively, our kehilla was left with

no “legal” way to practice our religion.

A MESSAGE TO THE KEHILLA AND THE GREATER COMMUNITY

A T

DESPITE ALL ODDS: REFLECTIONS OF A NEIGHBORA tale of growth and expansion resonating, “Ka’asher Ya’anu Oso, Kein Yirbeh V’chein Yifrotz”;A victory years in the making

Rabbi and Rebbetzin Sternberg, together with neighbors Favi

Walfish and Avraham Kamman, began litigation in federal

district court to contest the Village actions. After appearing

on the front page of The New York Times, the story gained

national attention. An organization known as The Rutherford

Foundation graciously offered its legal services pro bono.

Through the efforts of a neighbor and local attorney, A. J.

Straus, the United States Department of Justice became

aware of the matter and also joined the litigation.

After five years of litigation, our kehilla was successful

in changing the local zoning code, obtaining the relief we

sought. Three appeals were made by the Village to the

United States Supreme Court, however, with the assistance

of Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zweibel of Agudas Yisroel, each was

summarily rejected without argument. Our kehilla set an

example for the local population and the entire country.

With much help from Hashem, the shul has begun its

expansion and expects to celebrate its long-awaited

chanukas habayis this year. We look forward to a promising

future with much continued growth in the community!

our friends, our family, our community – we can finally

bring to a close the endeavor that we set out so many

years ago to achieve.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire

community for the tremendous display of support

throughout the years and look forward to many years

of growth and success to come.

Rabbi Yitzchok Sternberg

remnant of a bygone era, Reb Berel, A’H, was

a great and modest individual. Though small

in stature, he was a legend in every sense.

He was a man who summoned the fortitude to

build a thriving Torah home and future generations, even

after surviving unspeakable tragedies.

Reb Berel’s essence, was that of a builder. After the

Holocaust, at the age of 22, he returned to his town.

He was dismayed to find the shul desecrated and

converted into a stable. Reb Berel rebuilt the shul.

After marrying Mrs. Cilly Ostreicher, A’H, they immigrated

first to Eretz Yisrael, where Reb Berel built a Bais Medrash in

Hadar Yosef. His character as a builder continued through-

out his life. As one of the founders of Khal B’nai Moshe in

Boro Park, he inaugurated the first simcha in the shul.

COMMEMORATING reb SHLOMO DOV (berel) ben reb ALEXANDER YOSEF OSTREICHER a’h

A Ahis legacy lives on...Reb Berel was a perpetual doer, always seeking to give to

others. This sincere love for chessed was something he

and his eishes chayil transmitted to their children.

Indeed, the Ostreicher mishpacha has become

synonymous with their dedication to organizations from

Lev L’achim, to Satmar Bikkur Cholim, Ohel Tzippa Mikvah,

Mesivta of Eatontown, Kollel Shomrei Hachomos and

many others.

Reb Berel put his heart and soul into building Khal Mishkan

Yosef. Declaring himself the foreman, he spent every day, up

until the night before his petirah, overseeing its progress.

Upon his passing, his levaya was held in the nearly-

completed shul, a fitting tribute to his life’s mission.

beloved mechanech, a stirring

baal tefillah and a melamed

Torah par excellence, HoRav

Aron Zev Sternberg was a

gadol of special warmth who touched

the lives of so many. Commuting daily,

for over thirty six years, from Flatbush to

Great Neck, he spent many hours at the

North Shore Hebrew Academy. There, Rab-

bi Sternberg, with his infectious smile, put

his heart and soul into inspiring hundreds

of talmidim, teaching limudei kodesh and

krias haTorah. Above all, he imbued his stu-

dents with a sincere love for Yiddishkeit.

One of Rabbi Sternberg’s greatest sources

of joy was Khal Mishkan Yosef. As we near

the end of the shul’s construction, his dream

for our kehilla to have a new home is finally

seeing fruition.

As a place designed for the

perpetuation of limud Torah and

tefillah, it is only appropriate and

fitting to dedicate the grand library

in the memory of Rabbi Sternberg,

who disseminated the voice of

Torah and tefillah to so many.

Dedicated by his students in the Great

Neck community, the HoRav Aron Zev

Sternberg Memorial Library will be

an everlasting sanctuary of Torah

located within the new Khal Mishkan

Yosef edifice. In conjunction with the

rededication of the shul in memory of

Reb Berel Ostreicher A’H, his mechutan

and close friend, HoRav Aron Zev

Sternberg’s legacy will be memorialized.

We are honored that his talmid, Mr.

Michael Aryeh, of Great Neck will

be accepting the tribute to Rabbi

Sternberg on behalf

of his fellow students.

Michael is a well-known

mainstay of the Great Neck

community, a beacon of

Torah and chessed, who

characterizes his Rebbi,

Rabbi Sternberg.

“he loved torah and he loved yiddishkeit, and he taught us to love them too.”

fter the long and epic legal battle, we are

thrilled to finally be able to expand our

capabilities and prepare to move into our

beautiful new shul. The grand, inviting

structure, with its handsome, intricate detail, will expand

tenfold the size of our current Bais Hamedrash, allowing

the many more needed seats for mispallelim to join our

kehilla. Three floors and eighteen-foot ceilings, complete

with an open women’s gallery, add both depth as well as

a light and airy feel to the structure.

A Aside from our expansion to accommodate the regular

mispallelim, Khal Mishkan Yosef’s new building will also

be a vibrant hub of activities, hosting many amenities of a

community center:

• Open Ezras Nashim Gallery

• Large Simcha Hall Ballroom

• Men’s Mikvah

• Stately Otzar HaSeforim

— DEDICATION OPPORTUNITIES —

With your generous contribution, we can finish our shul’s expansion and continue our mission to provide a warm and welcoming environment for all our mispallelim.
