THE FARM, President Steyn, is the new buzzword in the international world of film-mak-ing, and Open Sky Film Studios is placingWelkom squarely on the global map forfilm-making destinations.Jaun de Meillon, director, chief operating

officer, and Reggie Mutsi, director, chiefexecutive officer, of Open Sky – a division ofNew Vision Film Studios – are excited aboutthis new venture, and especially the financialimplications for an ailing economy locally.The crew and actors of the movie Journey

is the Destination will be wrapping upshooting within the week, but already DeMeillon says he has received new scripts forproductions seeking to make Welkom theirfilming destination.Martin Katz, director, is very pleased with

Welkom and surroundings. He finds thepeople here wonderful to work with.They have been working on the various

sets around Welkom for the past four weeks.Katz says there are some 500 people from

all over South Africa and America staying inguest houses and hotels in Welkom.“We have also employed some 700 local

extras from the Goldfields area for thevarious scenes, and there are more than 50artisans, craftsmen and other tradesmenworking on the sets,” says Katz.For the airport scenes shot at the Welkom

Airport, local expertise was also used. JeanSnyman and his team of Haz Quip ensuredaviation safety and Brian Emmenis ofCapital Sounds was contracted to be incharge of all air operations, as well as beingthe air safety officer.Another local quirk is that De Meillon,

Emmenis and the 71-year-old pilot of theDakota used in one of the scenes, Capt. BrianBranders, are all ex-learners of the WelkomHigh School.“This is a brilliant boost to an ailing

economy. The possibilities that are beingopened up to local businessmen and entre-preneurs are endless,” says Mutsi.“We have to look past mining, and create a

new future for this region. Open Sky FilmStudios will do just this. We have overcomemany challenges to be where we are today.Now we have an international film studioright here in the heartland of Matjhabeng.”De Meillon says his progress has been

described as an “overnight success”.“I will rather say it has been eight years of

very hard work and negotiations, to achievethis ‘overnight’ success.”

THE Matjhabeng Local Municipality isleaving no stone unturned in retrievingevery cent owed by non-paying consumers.So says Xolelwa Msweli, acting municipal

manager.Eskom’s invoice for Matjhabeng this

month is R200 million and the payment ratehas dropped significantly. This has promptedthe executive committee of the municipalityto apply stringent measures to improverevenue collection and to control expenditu-re. Consumers continue to ignore calls topay, leaving the municipality with outstan-ding debt to creditors, especially SedibengWater and Eskom, amounting to millions.Msweli says the following is expected to be

implemented with immediate effect:) All officials acting in higher positions willbe reviewed to justify that such acting isnecessary. Those that are viewed as notjustifiable will be ceased instantly.) All overtime will stop with immediateeffect, except where motivated by executivedirectors concerned with service deliverydepartments.) Deductions will be made from all council-lors and employees who owe the municipali-

ty for services. These include study assistan-ce and abandoned and failed studies.) An application for exemption on thepayment of salary increases will be made tothe South African Local GovernmentBargaining Council.) Water restrictions will be introduced inareas with high water consumption that isnot backed by payments.) All indigents consuming more than 6 klwill be billed.) All active contracts with cost implicationsto the municipality will be reviewed.) Repairs and replacement of non-functionalmeters will be effected.) Services to consumers who owe themunicipality will be suspended.“We are heading into a financial crisis.

Every cent owed to the municipality must bepaid, otherwise we will be left with no optionbut to cut the supply of water and electricityto defaulting consumers,” says Msweli.Msweli says internal financial controls are

also being reviewed to enhance revenuecollection and protection. Councilllors andemployees are not exempted. Their serviceswill also be suspended if need be.

‘Every cent needed’

AN elderly resident from Dagbreek inWelkom was brutally attacked in his homelast Thursday (10/09).The man, who wished to remain anony-

mous, lives with his wife right opposite thehouse where Coen Hanekom (74) was fatallyassaulted in November 2014. Hanekom laterdied of his injuries in the hospital.The latest victim was attacked outside his

home soon after his wife had left for work.Two men stabbed him with a sharp homema-de knife and strangled him. They forced himinto the house, demanded money and took a

computer and cigarettes. The victim mana-ged to lock himself in a bedroom and yelledto his gardener that he had been attacked.The gardener saw the robbers walking

down the street and confronted them. Hemanaged to take the computer and the twomen fled the scene. They were identified asvagrants living in the vacant house whereHanekom had been assaulted. Capt. Kom ons vergelyk dit met ’ngewone huurkoop. As ’n finansie-ringinstelling na willekeur renteen koste by ’n huurkoop voeg, saldit aan ’n wetlike oortredingskuldig wees.

Dit is logies dat dieselfdebeginsel vir diensterekeninge geld.Of hang die grootte van jourekening van jou vriendskap metdie niemandsraad af?

Ek het besluit om die aange-leentheid na die NasionaleVerbruikerstribunaal te verwys.

Verder is die waterlekke nog netwaar hulle was, op die hoek vanDerrick- en Riana-straat en ook bydie hoek van Riana- en DaveFrederick-straat in Naudeville.

THE Matjhabeng Local Municipality announ-ced it is taking strong action againstdefaulters in a desperate effort to recoverR1,6 billion owed to it by consumers. Thelarge amount is for services rendered toconsumers – residents, businesses, govern-ment departments, schools and farms.The beleaguered municipality issued a

media statement on Monday (14/09) announ-cing it has intensified its revenue collectiondrive, Operation Patala (pay up), because theculture of non-payment X of which civilservants, including councillors X are part ofis continuing unabatedly.“The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is

leaving no stone unturned in trying toretrieve every cent owed to it by non-payingconsumers,” the municipality said in thestatement. It further threatened to cut-offsupply to all consumers owing the municipa-lity money. Three weeks ago the municipali-ty threatened strong action after SedibengWater had reduced water supply to 20%owing to Matjhabeng’s failure to pay a R1billion bill.It has, however, emerged that officials in

positions of power X including councillors Xwho are meant to be role models andupstanding citizens, were seemingly “gettingaway with murder” by not paying their fairshare. According to a reliable source, theyinclude Nkonjane Speelman, executive mayorof the Lejweleputswa District Municipality,who allegedly owes R46 046; Matau TsubaneR41 312 and Bishop Kockera R150 090.

Government owes about R21 million. Thefollowing businesses apparently owe thefollowing:1. Ligia Paper: R28,14 million2. Caponero Restaurant: R697 1543. Nutripharm: R11,5 million4. SCORES of patients receivinghealth treatment at theRheeder Park Clinic inWelkom are stranded follo-wing the temporary closure ofthe clinic.The facility has been closed

since Thursday (10/09) due toan ongoing protest bydisgruntled communitymembers.Protesting residents are

demanding that Free StateMEC for Health, Dr. BennyMalakoane, urgently addressthem on the reasons for thedelay in the construction of afully-fledged clinic. Protestingresidents cited frustration atbeing served in an overcrow-ded facility that is a private-ly-owned house being leasedto the Free State Departmentof Health.Apparently Malakoane

announced two years ago thata fully-fledged clinic will bebuilt to replace the house.Lungile Malawu, a member

of the Rheeder Park Cliniccommittee, said residentsdisrupted service deliveryafter learning that money thatwas budgeted for the con-struction of the clinic, hadbeen transferred to anotherproject.Tebogo Oepeng, provincial

THE 15-year-old boy who was accusedof the murder of Simon Motseko Lenkawas released from custody after thecase was withdrawn in the WelkomMagistrate’s Court.The boy, who is a member of the

Fire Brigade gang, was charged withmurder after eye witnesses hadidentified him as one of Lenka’skillers. Lenka who was believed to be amember of the opposing TDK gang,was killed last Monday evening (07/09).He was stabbed with a sharp object

before his body was hanged on apallisade fence in Thabong.When the boy was arrested his

father refused to take responsibility forhim as a minor.The father said he could not take

responsibility for his son anymore.The case in the Welkom Magistrate’s

Court was withdrawn due to a lack ofevidence. Mamello Mokhuoane,spokesperson for the Welkom police,said the police are still investigatingthe murder and will do everything toput the killers behind bars.

THE Goldfields TechnicalVocational Education andTraining (TVET) College intendsto be the first TVET college inthe country that will trainqualified electricians in theinstallation and maintenance ofsolar photovoltaic systems.Meetings have already been heldwith local solar companies tobecome part of the trainingprogramme.

The three-week course, for 12electricians at a time, willpossibly be presented overweekends. Dr Lynette Fourie,principal of the college, saysthere is a lot of excitement andco-operation from companies likeSolar Safe, Gefco, Metal and

Fence, UVSS and AR Enginee-ring.

“Sunny South Africa is ideallysituated and nothing is beingdone about it. In the Goldfieldsarea 7 000 watts per square metrecan be generated per solarpanel.”

The new programme will beinternationally recognised as thecollege is also in the process ofacquiring accreditation from Cityand Guilds, a global leader inskills development. A number ofprogrammes, accredited by theEnergy Sector Education andTraining Authority (Eseta) willfollow. The college intends tooffer these programmes in 2016.

Mr. Hennie Benade, head of theengineering department, said it isvitally important that the solar

systems are correctly installedand maintained.

In June this year Fourie,Benade (head of the engineeringdepartment) and Lucy Losaba(deputy principal: academicaffairs) visited Dudley Collegeand Bradford College in England.

They shared knowledge andexpertise and worked together todevelop an innovative internatio-nal solar photovoltaic program-me. This timely internationalskills partnership project isfunded by the British Council.

Fourie said governmentsaround the world are investing inrenewable energy sources toalleviate energy supply challen-ges. With this project solarenergy education and trainingwill be done in Lejweleputswa.

Booyens, who has made his mark atthe Goldfields Technical andVocational Education Training(TVET) College in Welkom.

Not only is this remarkable mangoing to retire at the end of Septem-ber, but he and his wife, Esther,will be leaving the Goldfields.

Booyens, who has a B Jurisdegree, started his career as ajunior prosecutor.

He then obtained a BComm, aBEd Master’s degree, as well as ateacher’s diploma.

After teaching at the Goudveld-Hoërskool, among others, he becameprincipal of the Tosa TechnicalCollege in 1991.

“At that stage we had 250 studentsand we shared classrooms with aschool,” says Booyens.

In 1995 the new campus with 600students became a reality.

He started the new campus and

assisted in planting trees and grass.Dr Lynette Fourie, principal of

the Goldfields TVET College, saysBooyens played a major role in themerger of the Welkom College andTosa in 2000. The college now hasmore than 9 000 students.

There used to be satellite campus-ses in Springfontein, Ventersburg,Harrismith, Botshabelo and Virgi-nia.

Booyens says respect and trans-formation are very important tohim.

“I will miss the Goldfields, thecollege, my colleagues, my friends,and the students, but I look forwardto settling in Centurion. I want toplay golf and travel, and enjoy mygrandchildren.”

He and his wife have fourchildren and seven grandchildren.

Marilyn Cupido, aliteracy mentor forthe Nal’ibali reading-for-enjoyment cam-paign, runs the club.She said the clubhosts up to 20 chil-dren each week.

A fun week with ac-tivities was held du-ring the holiday to de-velop children’s lan-guage and literacyskills. The childrenreceived shoe boxesand created their ownstory boxes whichthey decorated. Theboxes were filled withvarious objects andthe children made upstories by using thecontents of each box.

Painting and pup-pet making were alsoused to entertain thechildren.

The club is one ofmore than 500 clubsthat form part of theNal’ibali clubs.Driven by the Projectfor the Study of Alter-native Education inSouth Africa (PRAE-SA), the Nal’ibalicampaign works withcaregivers and com-munities to make sto-ries and reading apart of everyday life.

VIR die bekende tennisafrigterMuis Olivier (83) en sy veteraan-tennismaats is dit ’n hartseerstoriedat die Welkom-tennisklub ná meeras 60 jaar ontbind het.

Dit was die eerste tennisklub inWelkom en is in die 1950’s gestig.

Die laaste uitnodigingstoernooi isop Vrouedag daar gespeel. Altesaam32 veteraanspelers van oor dieNoord-Vrystaat heen het aan dierondomtalie-toernooi deelgeneem.

Dié toernooi is na die oudste lidvan die klub, die legendariese MuisOlivier, genoem.

Muis het in 1959 ’n lid van dieklub geword.

Die hoofrede waarom die Wel-kom-klub se tennisklub ontbind, isdie kwynende ledetal, sê dievoorsitter, Johan Lourens.

Tradisioneel is daar vir jare opVrouedag ’n rondomtalie-uitnodi-gingsdag vir veterane aangebied.

Muis Olivier en tennis is si-noniem in die Goudveld.

Hy rig nou al 43 jaar professio-neel tennis af en fokus nou veralop gr. 1- tot gr. 3-leerlinge van dieWelkom-Volkskool en die St.Dominic-kollege. Sowat 40 leerlingeleer by hom tennisvaardighede aan.

Die sportman en tennispioniervan Welkom het in 1956 in ’n bankin die stad begin werk. Later hethy die bank se diens vir ’n betrek-king by die munisipaliteit verruil.

Hy het egter gou op verskillendesportterreine, onder meer krieketen rugby, naam gemaak.

“In die 1960’s is ek gekies vir dieSuid-Afrikaanse plattelandsekrieket-elftal wat teen ’n span vandie destydse Rhodesië gespeel het.”

Hy was ook destyds lid van dieVrystaatse krieketspan. Daarby washy lid van die Noord-Vrystaatsesenior tennisspan en het virNoord-Vrystaat rugby gespeel.

Hy is nou nog ’n kranige rolbal-

speler.Toe sy sportloopbaan ’n hoogte-

punt bereik het, was hy in ’nmotorfietsongeluk betrokke.

“Ek het ernstige beseringsopgedoen en was ’n jaar lank buiteaksie.”

Muis is baie trots op sy driekinders.

Sy dogter, Linda, was ’n hoofmei-sie aan die Welkom-Gimnasium.

In 1985 is sy vir die Suid-Afri-kaanse junior gholfspan gekies watin Europa gaan toer het. In 1986 hetsy ’n gholfbeurs verwerf om aandie internasionale Universiteit inSan Diego, Amerika, te gaanstudeer.

Sy het ’n graad in sielkunde en’n meestersgraad in internasionaleverhoudinge verwerf.

Terug in Suid-Afrika het sy in1992 vrouekrieket begin speel en

van 1997 tot 2000 was sy dieonderkaptein van die Suid-Afri-kaanse vrouespan. Dié span het inEuropa gaan toer.

Jacques was in 1981 die onder-hoofseun van die Welkom-Gimnasi-um en spog met Vrystaat-kleure inkrieket, tennis en atletiek. Hy het’n BA- en honneursgraad aan dieNoordwes-universiteit (NWU)behaal. In 1995 was hy lid van dieSuid-Afrikaanse plattelandsekrieketspan wat in Engeland gaantoer het. Agt jaar later is hy askaptein van die span gekies.

Die oudste Olivier-seun, Albert, isook ’n oud-Gimmie en het ’nBCom-graad aan die Universiteitvan Pretoria (UP) verwerf.

Muis se eerste vrou, Marie, isjare gelede aan kanker oorlede enhy en sy tweede vrou, Magda, isnou 20 jaar getroud.

sports people their due. The truth is thatsometimes we have even neglected them,”said Leku Mosiako, spokesperson.“It is with this in mind that we have

partnered with the Free State Department ofSport, Arts, Culture and Recreation tobestow honour on these legends.“Mosiako said a fundraising golf tourna-

HARMONY SPORTS ACADEMY footballplayer Teboho Mokoena could be the nextbig thing after signing a professionalcontract with Premier Soccer League (PSL)giants Super Sport United. The buddingstar will start his professional career in thejunior side of the Absa PSL three-timechampions.Mokoena impressed Super Sport talent

scouts at the recent tournaments of theSouth African Football Association (Safa)South African Breweries (SAB) inter-provin-cial and the international u.19 footballstaged in Pretoria and Durban, respectively.Mokoena captained the Free State u.21

winning team that beat Mpumalanga 3-1 toscoop the inter-provincial title for thesecond time in a row. His sterling perfor-mance earned him a lucrative deal withSuper Sport.

The deal sees the youngster also beginthe journey to follow in the footsteps of hisfather, Alexis Didi Motaung, who died in2010. The departed stalwart played for FreeState Stars and had a lengthy stint at thenow defunct Hellenic Football Club, whichwas one of the top clubs from Cape Town.Kwanele Kopo, Super Sport United’s

Academy technical head, said Mokoena willbe promoted to the senior team of thePretoria outfit. He said the youngster wasalready part of Super Sport junior sidecurrently, competing in the MultiChoiceDiski Challenge, a reserve league of all 16clubs playing in the elite division of PSL.Kopo said in terms of their plans theyoungster will upon completing his gr.12final examination in November, immediate-ly move to Super Sport.Ensuring Mokoena fits well into the

team’s fold, Kopo said they have arrangedfor the player to train with Super Sport’s

junior team with the first trainingduring the forthcoming school holiday.In the meantime, Mokoena continues
