Electric Utility Industry: Then and Now

•Electric utilities were natural vertical monopolies•Federal Power Act of 1992 required opening

transmission grid to competition•In 1996 FERC Orders 888 and 889 to remedy

under discrimination in transmission–utilities must offer transmission to third parties under

same terms they charge themselves

•Challenge: to run a free market on what is really one big electrical circuit

Interconnected Electric Grid Spans North America

The North American grid is one of the largest &most complex man-made objects. It consists of four large asynchronoussystems:

1) Eastern Interconnect2) Western Interconnect3) Texas (ERCOT)4) Quebec

What Makes the Grid Unique?

•There is no mechanism to efficiently store electric energy: generation must equal load–only several seconds of kinetic energy stored–no equivalent of busy signal, or holding pattern

•With few exceptions, there is no mechanism to directly control power flow in grid–flow is dictated by impedance of lines–“loop flow” is a major problem

Additional Grid Characteristics

•Transmission grid has a finite, but difficult to quantify capability to transfer power–limited by a number of constraints, such as line

thermal limits, voltage limits, and stability limits–because of loop flow, congestion on any element

can limit power transfers in many directions

•Transmission grid must be able to withstand statistically likely contingencies, such as line outages

•Contours can be effective for showing large amounts of spatial data–weather maps showing temperatures and

weather radar images provide good examples–potential power system applications

•bus voltage magnitudes and angles (?)•percent loading on transmission lines•percent reactive power output of generators

Interactive 3D Visualization

•Starting point is to re-map traditional one-line into 3D–builds upon the traditional 2D one-line, familiar

to power system users–existing one-lines can be extended into 3D to

highlight relationships between variables–existing 2D one-lines were redrawn using a 3D
