AMAC’s influence

with our political leaders

is also building. As we

serve our members by

fighting to remove the

double tax on Social

Security income that one

out of three recipients

must pay

Dear AMAC members,

Thanks to you Patriotic Americans, AMAC continues to grow! We arenearing 200,000 members and our goal is to have one million membersby the 2012 elections.

AMAC’s influence with our political leaders is also building. As we serve ourmembers by fighting to remove the double tax on Social Security income thatone out of three recipients must pay, we are grateful to the staff of CongressmanPaul Ryan (R-WI) who asked us to provide them with information about our planto repeal that grossly unfair tax.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) has had the courage to offer aproposed bill to help keep Social Security solvent. Her staff reached out to uswhen they heard about AMAC’s plan to couple her bill with a bill that wouldallow workers to have a tax deductible Social Security IRA to add money to theirretirement. Go to our website atwww.amac.us to follow our progress.

This issue of your magazine is packed with articles we hope you will findhelpful. In this issue you’ll learn more about Herman Cain, a relatively unknownperson running for President, and you'll also read about Cape Hatteras, NorthCarolina, a great vacation spot. You’ll find an introduction to a new book byJedediah Bila, AMAC’s favorite writer, and of course, some food ideas fromKathie’s Kitchen.

On a more serious note:Recently we were reminded that power is fleeting. Like New York’s former

Governor, Elliott Spitzer, who had to resign after he was caught having relationswith a prostitute, now Anthony Weiner has quickly gone from being anoutspoken, powerful Congressman to yesterday’s news.

It has been said that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Is it any wonder that politicians fall victim? What protects our country from totalcorruption that grips so many other countries?

Consider what Ben Franklin wrote in 1784 about how America won theRevolutionary War:

"….if it had not been for the justice of our cause and the consequentinterposition of Providence, in which we had faith, we must have been ruined. IfI had ever been an atheist, I should now have been convinced of the being andgovernment of Deity! It is he who abases the proud and favors the humble. May wenever forget his goodness to us, and may our future conduct manifest ourgratitude."

Sincerely,

“Sound Off”

Jack Lavelle You guys are doing the good work and should

be proud. We don’t have to beat AARP in numbers inthe short time we’ve been organized. We just need tothrow a scare into them so they show their true colors.

My wife and I just renewed our memberships fortwo more years, and I mailed back AARP’smembership card they wanted me to have. I feel likethis organization’s on the right track. We need to gethold of the health care debate and make it about whatit should be: affordable health care for all Americans.

Karen Perry It seems this President is slowly inching

towards a dictatorship rule. He is taking more andmore power with the media once again playing the

role of willing accomplice. It is up to you the citizensof this great country to become informed, and DOSOMETHING.

Call your Senate. Call your representatives inCongress. It is your duty, your American privilege andyour right.

Dale H Layton It’s the American way, 28% don't pay ANY

taxes and Seniors pay DOUBLE. FLAT TAX!

Elaine Talbert So delighted to discover an alternative to self-

serving, ultra-liberal AARP...one that is truly on theside of America's over-50 population! Thank you,AMAC!

It began in Manhattan in October of2008, in the midst of one of the most

passionate election seasons I havewitnessed thus far. After a fewintriguing encounters with membersof the liberal elite, I found myself

jotting down conversations that occurred in the gym, restaurants, the school where I was teaching, a museum, and elsewhere. I chronicled my interactions with liberalsas they opined about Sarah Palin, Republicans, feminism,Barack Obama, wealth redistribution, and more.

It wasn’t until I had embarked upon a new voyage asa conservative columnist and commentator that I realizedI had something I wanted to share. I couldn’t help butremember the wise words of my grandfather: “Sometimesit’s the stuff that happens in plain old everyday life—therealness of it all—that speaks the biggest truths.” With thatmemory, I decided to invite readers to take a step into myworld, open their eyes, and look around … to discoverwhat the Left’s version of tolerance, diversity, civility, andfeminism really look like … and to see the conservativeversus liberal world view illuminated by the simplicity ofeveryday life.

And so I bring you an excerpt from my new book,Outnumbered: Chronicles of a Manhattan Conservative:

“Psst!” I heard from the right. I looked around, but didn’tsee anyone. “Psst!” I turned again, and this time an adorableold lady—she had to be at least eighty, if not more—was wide-eyed and pointing frantically at her collar, then gesturingtoward mine. I jumped about a foot in the air, convinced thatsome grotesque bug was on its way toward my face. I lookeddown and saw nothing.

“You might want to cover that up,” she whispered as shetucked my Palin pin inside my outer jacket. “I don’t want yougetting yourself killed now, young lady,” she added.

“Oh, it’s okay. I haven’t been beaten up yet,” I said with alaugh.

“Please be careful,” she replied. “I nearly got knocked tothe ground because of one of those a few weeks ago. It’s justnot worth the fight, you know?” As I watched her exit the deli,

I stood wondering what in heaven’s name had possessedsomeone to nearly knock down a barely five-foot, eighty-something-year-old woman because of a pin. Where in the hellam I living?

I sat for a little while, staring out the window at LexingtonAvenue, observing the physical diversity of people who passedby. Did so many of them look different on the outside, but thinkthe same? I wondered if any had hidden their Palin pins, too. It’s just not worth the fight ran through my mind. I lifted thepin out of my jacket. If people don’t fight, there will be nothingleft to fight for, I thought.

I decided to walk home and, to no surprise, faced my fairshare of grimaces and comments. A woman mumbled“Ignorant bitch” as I rounded Third Avenue. A man stopped meto “inform” me that if I wanted to support hatred, I “shouldmove to a place like Utah.” A teenager told me to “get the hellout of Obama’s city.” But one mom carrying an infant gave mea thumbs up, and that made it all worthwhile.

Of course, when I told my mom what had happened, shewas terrified. Her desire to protect her little girl would alwaystake precedence over any freedom of speech crusade. Ipromised I’d spend two hours each week in the boxing ring. She wasn’t amused.

Dad gave me a stern “Be careful” lecture on the phoneafter dinner, but I could sense the pride swelling in his voice. There was no way Tony Bila would ever tell me to take that pinoff. During my time at Columbia University, he had parkedoutside repeatedly with an enormous Rush Limbaugh stickeracross his rear bumper. Now that’s guts.

It’s close to 1:00 a.m., and soon I’ll be heading to bed. Ijust sifted through some media commentary on how SarahPalin is the anti-feminist. Someone needs to set that recordstraight … for the girls who will otherwise grow up thinkingthat feminism and abortion must go hand in hand. Becausethey deserve better.

Create a Budgetand Take Control of Your Finances!

The savings ratefor Americans isthe lowest it hasbeen in 73 years.

Creating a budget is the first good step you can make to take control of yourfinances. A budget will enable you to develop a strategy that can address both

your short term needs and long term goals. So why do so many of us take little control of our finances? For starters, many

of us are afraid. Perhaps we don’t want to see on paper how we’ll be short makingthis month’s payments while also saving for the next trip to visit our grandchildren. But by looking closely at your expenses, you will have the opportunity to makeadjustments to your spending so that you can contribute more to savings and payfor life’s unexpected expenses.

Creating your budget is knowing your monthly spending habits and needs. This is accomplished by tracking how much money you earn – and how muchmoney you spend. For at least one month, watch closely how you spend yourmoney and keep all receipts. This will help you come up with an amount to budgetfor your variable expenses – such as dining out, dry cleaning, or money to yourchildren.

Helpful Tips:

Take a good look at your entertainment expenses. Can you cut back on these

costs without compromising your lifestyle?

Pick 2 days a month to pay your bills, or pay bills as soon as they arrive to avoid

late fees

Decide what you can cut and then cut it!

Track savings. Once you see positive results – you’ll feel motivated to save more!

Try cutting your spending in the categories you spend the most. Challenge

yourself to cut spending in at least 3 categories.

Record your spending habits – monitor your budget monthly – and measure

your results!

Save! Just because you are making good money does not mean that you will be

“ok” in 10 or 20 years. You must save!

 Pay yourself first!

It’s never too late to dream! Consider your talents and what you enjoy doing

and whether or not these talents can be used to create additional income.

I n October 2009, Carolyn Smyth*, an insurance agent, discussed extended care planning with Rose Williams,

her client. Rose understood the need to talk about theconsequences of living a long life and how it might affecther family. The agent explained that without a plan, assetsand savings could be depleted by $50,000 - $100,000 ayear. Without a plan, family members would be chainedto her needs, and the family could be forced to makechoices based on cost, not choice. After a lengthydiscussion, Rose still wanted to analyze the solution ofbuying Long Term Care Insurance so she ran it by herattorney.

The attorney urged her not to buy and said “you havefour children and one of them is a doctor; they will bethere if and when you need care.” Rose went ahead andpurchased the insurance despite the advice of theattorney.

A few years later Rose’s health deteriorated as a resultof back and hip problems. Her mental acuity was 100%intact, but she needed assistance with Activities of DailyLiving (ADLs).

Her son, who was a doctor making a sizeable income, was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and was in therapyand was unable to help.

The younger daughter was busy raising her threechildren on a limited income and was unable to help.

The 52 year old daughter was recently diagnosed withbreast cancer – unable to help.

The one daughter who could help, wouldn’t helpunless the other siblings contributed equally.

Few consider auto or homeowner's insurance as awaste of money if they never have to use it. Instead, it’sthe price one pays to insure against the risk of fire oraccidents. The same goes for long-term care insurance;it’s the price one pays for the risk of needing long termcare.

The reality is that the currently healthy can expect toeventually suffer from one or more chronic diseases, which often results in high out of pocket and long termcare costs. Still, most people delay purchasing insuranceuntil their health declines and therefore run the risk ofpaying higher premiums or being denied coveragealtogether.

Ellen Dorle, a certified financial planner based inColumbus, Ohio says it is “almost mandatory” to haveLTCI, particularly if a client has significant assets. It is akinto having homeowner's insurance in that you hope youdon’t have to use it but want to have it.

With a Plan

 Professional helps you with planning

Money is there without depleting the family nest egg

Your loved ones can carry on a more normal life

You will be able to stay at home longer with yourfamily

You will not be a burden

You can better maintain your independence

Without a Plan

Family must find caregivers for your needs

You could deplete your savings by $50,000 - $100,000per year

Family members become chained to your needs

Choices will be based on cost, not choice

You may have to enter a nursing home prematurely

You will disrupt the lives of your loved ones

Death TaxesStealing the American Dream

You work hard, save, and invest –then you die and the IRSconfiscates its “share” of your

assets. This is how the death tax stealsthe American dream from those who“have too much.”

by Dick Patten

14 | www.amac.us

Page 15: Volume 5 Issue 2

ACROSS THE COUNTRY, from Oregonto Ohio to Washington, DC, the Americanpeople recognize that the death tax isfundamentally unjust – especially when itdestroys the livelihoods of family businessowners, farmers, and their workers.

Consider third-generation familybusiness owner Lowell Miles of HappyValley, Oregon. Miles’ business providesmore than 100 jobs in the fiberglass andcomposite industry. As Miles recentlywrote in The Oregonian, the state’slargest newspaper, in Portland, “estatetaxes force businesses to divertresources from expanding andcreating jobs, to ensuring thecompany can stay open once theowner dies. Those (businesses) thatcan’t pony up are forced to sell orshutter.”

Like the families of many otherbusiness owners, Miles’ family willhave to pay federal estate taxes whenhe dies. The current rate is 35 percenton all assets exceeding $5 million, including both personal and businessassets. If the Oregon legislature has itsway, his family may also have to pay astate estate tax of 20 percent – thehighest estate-tax rate in the nation.

Combined, the rate could exceed 50percent.

While Oregon’s move towards aconfiscatory estate tax will further damage

the state’s economy and encourage

businesses to move elsewhere, many other states arelooking to ease or repeal their estate or inheritancetaxes.

As this article went to press, Ohio appeared readyto repeal its estate tax. The House of Representativesalready has approved a budget package that includesrepeal of the tax. The state Senate is expected to followthe House’s lead and Gov. John Kasich has indicatedhis support.

Lawmakers in Illinois, Indiana, Maine andPennsylvania also are considering legislation to repealthe so-called death tax. The governors of Maine, NewJersey, and Rhode Island have proposed reducing thetax’s impact by increasing the exemption. A proposalby North Carolina’s governor, meanwhile, to increasethe death tax by reducing the exemption, was shotdown by the legislature.

This flurry of activity is encouraging for a countrystill struggling with high levels of unemployment. Astudy by the Connecticut Department of Revenuefound that states with estate taxes had higherunemployment rates and more sluggish economiesthan states without the death tax. The same studyfound that the estate tax was the leading reason thatwealthy residents were abandoning their roots, takingtheir money, and moving to states without estatetaxes.

Still, the fight for repeal has been far from easy. Some state and local officials have been moreconcerned about the short-term loss of tax revenue.

What these officials don’t seem to understand isthat higher estate taxes equal fewer tax dollars, notmore. A recent study from the American FamilyBusiness Foundation found that for every $1 increasein federal estate tax revenues, state and localgovernments lose almost $3 in other tax revenues.

“ A study by the Connecticut Department ofRevenue found that states with estate taxes hadhigher unemployment rates and more sluggish

economies than states without the death tax. Thesame study found that the estate tax was theleading reason that wealthy residents were

abandoning their roots, taking their money, andmoving to states without estate taxes.”

That’s because the estate tax is a proven business and jobkiller – and when businesses go under, or are broken up,income, sales and other taxes go down. State estate taxeshave the same effect.

Fortunately, the American public gets it. Pollsconsistently show that more than two-thirds of voters favorpermanent death tax repeal.

And Congress is paying attention. More than 130Members of Congress – both Democrat and Republican –have signed the American Family Business Institute’s“Death Tax Repeal Pledge.” These members are now leadinga bipartisan fight for Federal Estate Tax repeal.Representatives Kevin Brady (R-TX-8) and Mike Ross (D-AR-4) have sponsored “The Death Tax Repeal PermanencyAct” (H.R. 1259), which has an impressive number of co-sponsors from both sides of the political aisle.

A recent study conducted by former TreasuryDepartment economist Steve Entin, now with the Institutefor Research on the Economics of Taxation, found thatestate tax repeal would increase federal revenues by $89

billion over a ten-year budget period.Entin’s finding isbased on theunderstanding thatrepeal would spureconomic growth, allowing morebusinesses to createmore prosperity andthereby increasetotal tax collections.

Estate-tax repealalso would increase thesize of the U.S. economy,or gross domestic product (GDP), by about 2.25 percent, private sector output and labor income (hours workedtimes hourly wage) by about 2.34 percent, and capital stockby 6.1 percent.

But repeal is about much more than just numbers andstatistics. If you ask 30-year-old Texas rancher ClaytonLeverett, it’s about lives, families and heritage.

Leverett’s family was forced to sell half of their ranch sothey could pay the death tax when their father died. Despite

Leverett’s efforts to save the ranch – by taking on asecond job – the family still is struggling to payUncle Sam’s bill.

America would be much better off if theLowell Mileses and Clayton Leveretts in thenation could invest their time, money and energyinto building their ranches and businesses, hiringworkers and contributing to the economy and taxrolls – rather than spending all that effort to satisfythe taxman.

Congress and state legislators across the nationultimately will decide whether death taxes are thebest way to fill their budget holes. From every

possible standpoint, moral and economic, the deathtax is the wrong answer. The future of small business

and American entrepreneurism stands in the balance.

Dick Patten is the President of the AmericanFamily Business Institute, a trade association of family

business owners, farmers and entrepreneurs workingfor repeal of the death tax.

Death TaxesStealing the American Dream

“Leverett’s family was forcedto sell half of their ranch sothey could pay the death taxwhen their father died.Despite Leverett’s efforts tosave the ranch – by taking ona second job – the family stillis struggling to pay UncleSam’s bill.”

UPDATE 6/29/11From the floor of the OhioState Legislature: the OhioState Senate has passed theFY 2011-2012 budget by atwo-to-one majority, effectively killing the deathtax in Ohio. This is a historicevent for Ohio and forpatriots everywhere whorecognize that the death taxis bad for the smallbusinesses which fuel oureconomy.

True job creatorsneed a voiceby Bernie Marcus

worked hard to make my own small company into a bigone but I never could have succeeded if I had faced the

avalanche of impediments that our current governmenthurls down upon this generation of entrepreneurs. TheWhite House’s job creation strategy is to threaten highertaxes on anyone making more than two hundred thousanddollars a year and to appoint yet another council on jobs.Does anyone really believe this will create the jobs thiscountry needs? I certainly don’t. What I do believe is that wemust bring together the hard-working men and womenwho are on the front lines of job creation – small andmedium-sized business founders and owners – to light theway to renewed economic growth.

By giving real job creators a voice, whether shopkeepersor software engineers, they can speak from real-worldexperience about how to create jobs and why job creationcan’t be accomplished from Washington. I believe thesebusiness men and women could point out the policies thatare obstacles and articulate policies that invite growth andinvestment, and most importantly - job creation. Whobetter to defend free enterprise than entrepreneurs whohave actually created America’s private-sector jobs?

These companies – high-tech and low, restaurants andretail stores, manufacturers and bakeries – are thebusinesses that drive job creation. Half of all Americanworkers are employed at a small business and they havegenerated two out of three new jobs over the last 15 years. We can’t have a serious conversation about reducingunemployment without listening to the companies that areNOT on the Fortune 500 list.

Overregulation, unfair taxes, and new mandates, likethe controversial healthcare bill, are choking these job-creating businesses before they can get off the ground. ThePresident’s State of the Union Address included calls toincrease trade and cut corporate taxes, all things that helpbig businesses, but do little to help the small enterprisesand start-ups that are the engines of economic growth. They need relief from the alphabet soup of regulations thatstifles them and therefore chokes hiring.

From the EPA to the FDA, from the IRS to SarbanesOxley, regulations disproportionally affect the smallestfirms, drowning America's entrepreneurs in red tape.According to a study published last year by the Small

Business Administration, firms with fewer than 20

employees spend 36 percent more per employee than largefirms. Regulations, on average, cost small firms $10,585 peremployee each year: $4,120 to comply with economicregulations, $4,101 to comply with environmentalregulations, $1,585 to comply with complex tax rules, and$781 to comply with OSHA and homeland securityregulations. In fact, more than 144,000 pages of regulationsstrangle small and large businesses alike. Congress mustprovide these innovators a break.

I know dozens of men and women who started withnothing, waiting in the hallway hoping the mailman wouldbring enough receipts to make payroll, working through thenight, foregoing their own salaries so they could pay theirbills, and yet fretting over filing a raft of forms for local, stateand government regulators and worrying aboutbewildering new rules. These are the true job creators andmany feel downright abused by a government that ignoresthem, penalizes them and goes out of its way to impedetheir businesses.

These job creators want to grow their businesses; theywant to hire new employees and they understand that theyneed to pay fair taxes. But they don’t have a forum; theydon’t have a voice, and they are frustrated when academicsand life-long government employees, bureaucrats whoknow nothing about creating jobs, determine policies thatcould either spur or stifle job growth. The heroes of theAmerican economic dream are the people who take therisks, make the sacrifices, and still maintain the beliefs thatpropel them to success. These job creators must tell us whatpolicies they need to grow their business and put Americaback to work.

I am now calling on all business founders, owners andleaders to join me in the ranks of the Job Creators Alliance,a new organization I am proud to help create. Join me inthis quest to allow free enterprise to not only heal ourwounded economy, but also to return us to the economicgrowth that we need to create jobs across America.

Who is Herman Cain?by Justin Quinn

HERMAN CAIN’S rapid rise to

prominence in the early days

of the 2012 presidential campaign is a

unique phenomenon for Republican

presidential politics.

While Democrats typically don’t

U.S. CREDIT CARD DEBT PER HOUSEHOLD ($)

(Data Source: U.S. Federal Reserve)

Every three minutes another person falls behind on credit card debt. It’s no wonder, since every major credit card company has nearly doubled the minimum monthly payment on consumers’ bills. Federal Regulators forced the change because of their concern about the growing mountain of consumer debt, which stands at $2.17 trillion. Many consumers can only pay the minimum payment, which can take up to 30 years to pay off. Now, relief is in sight for millions of Americans.

CreditGUARD of America, a non-profit licensed debt management service provider, is making a new program available to lower debt payments and become free of all credit card debt in only three to five years. Consumers need only $2,000 or more in total credit card debt and behind on any account, to cut their payment by 35% to 50%, and reduce or eliminate interest charges altogether.

Over 200,000 families, located throughout the U.S. have regained financial independence with CreditGUARD’s licensed, bonded and insured service. CreditGUARD of America has received high marks in consumer surveys showing high consumer satisfaction and confidence. The CreditGUARD debt management program can actually turn a person’s life around.

One such case is Sandra L. who proclaimed “CreditGUARD cut my monthly payment by $656 and saved me over $29,206.53 in interest. They saved my way of life and gave me back my piece of mind! Now I can see myself on my way to becoming debt free.” or Jeffery C. who said “CreditGUARD of America helped me consolidate 3 of my credit cards into one affordable payment. They are now saving me nearly $200 a month. Now I will be debt free in 2 years or less”

Seniors Paying Double Tax on Social

Security Income

...AMAC pushesfor repeal

24 | www.amac.us

Page 25: Volume 5 Issue 2

One of the cruelest taxes paidby older Americans is thetax they must pay on Social

Security income. The average extratax costs each senior between$1,800 and $3,000 a year.

What had started out as a solution to help bailout Social Security 28 years ago has turned into amean blow to elderly Americans living on a fixedincome. The idea was to tax “well off” seniors tohelp balance the books and keep Social Securityin the black. Now, one out of three seniors iscaught in this trap.

Gene H. and his wife, Barbara, live in centralFlorida. They have income from Social Security, apension and they both have part time jobsearning about $4,000 total for the year. They tookthe jobs so they would have a little spendingmoney to visit their grandchildren and take someshort trips. Their income (“combined income”over $32,000*) classifies them as having“substantial income” in addition to their SocialSecurity and costs them over $1,500 in tax thatthey must pay on half of their Social Security. Now, keep in mind that they already paid incometax on their earnings before their Social Securitycontributions were paid - so they wind up beingtaxed on this income twice!

AMAC feels this tax is wrong.

It is especially wrong to tax those living on afixed income that are faced with increasing dailycosts for food and housing, before they are hitwith $4 per gallon gasoline costs! When you factorin that they have not been given a cost of livingincrease from Social Security in over 2 years, youreadily see they are being hurt by this unfairdouble tax.

There are several benefits to removing the tax onyour Social Security.

The first is how the money will be used by thefolks who will keep it. That money will be spentlocally unlike the so-called Stimulus Act; it willimmediately be put into the economy, benefitingall types of business, both large and small. Theripple effect is expected to triple the value of thefunds. The total amount of funds involved run intoseveral billions of dollars that will help prime thepump of our stagnant economy.

Secondly, it will restore some sanity in the TaxCode. If President Obama and the Congress areserious about only raising taxes on the wealthythen they should take this tax burden off themiddle class and go after the multi-millionairesand billionaires. AMAC demands they honor whatthey have said.

And lastly, it will give our elderly people livingon a fixed income a break. We owe something tothose Americans who have worked all their livesand helped build this great country. They shouldnot have to pay a penalty because they haveincome from savings or part time jobs. Let us treatthem fairly.

As you know there are other organizations thatclaim to be representing seniors yet only AMAC hastaken up this cause. Soon our members will beasked to participate in an effort to influence ourelected officials to repeal this tax. If you would liketo help in this effort please go to:www.amac.us/remove-the-tax-on-social-security

How to replace the lost funds from Social Security if the tax isrepealed

Because our nation is in a state of severe debt it would not be agood idea to reduce the funds going into programs such as SocialSecurity unless there was a way to replace the funds. AMAC has at leastone proposal to do that.

Consider placing a tax on the windfall profits received by triallawyers when they win a major lawsuit. At present it is common forlawyers to receive 33 1/3% of the settlement. Why not put a cap on theattorney’s fee of 25%? On a million dollar settlement the lawyer wouldcollect $250,000 instead of $333,000 and the difference of 8% would bepaid into Social Security. The person who was injured would stillcollect the same amount.

Again, if President Obama is serious about taxing the wealthymore, isn’t that a good way of doing it?

To give you an idea of the income of some trial lawyers considerthis; John Edwards, who ran unsuccessfully for Vice President withSenator Kerry, earned 27 million dollars in the four years before he ranfor the Senate.

*note: see Internal Revenue definition of “combined income” - adjustedgross income plus nontaxable income plus one half of your social securitybenefits equals your combined income.

Fun in the SunThe Outer Banks of North Carol ina

While leaning over the kitchen sink basting a turkey,I heard laughter coming from the living room, where adult family members gathered to watch

football. As children ran circles through the house, it wasclear everyone was having a good time. We spend so muchtime prepping for the holidays only to flash forward towaving goodbye at the door. Suddenly a house once filledwith chatter is hauntingly quiet. As I moved forward pickingup empty glasses, it dawned on me that our family shouldget together more often than the holidays. If your extendedfamily is like ours, large and living in many different states, holiday visits often become the only timefor a get-together. We decided it was timeto change that by having a family week atthe beach.

If you’re looking for a relaxing seasidevacation and want to share the fun withfamily and friends, there’s no better placeto visit than the beautiful beaches of theOuter Banks. Located off the coast ofNorth Carolina, this 200 mile long stringof narrow barrier islands coversapproximately half the northern NorthCarolina Coastland. Separating Oceanfrom Sound, the Outer Banks is an idealvacation destination due to its wideexpanse of pristine beachfront andenjoyable climate.

Whether you enjoy soaking up thesun or surfing in the waves of the AtlanticOcean, the Outer Banks offers a widevariety of activities for all ages. Beautiful

beach home rentals are available, with many offering greatamenities such as swimming pools and recreation rooms.Your best bet is to book your vacation through a wellestablished realtor who is familiar with location and pricingand can offer advice on topics ranging from insurance tolinen rentals. Many of the homes are quite spacious and caneasily accommodate multiple guests and are perfect forsplitting the cost with family and friends.

Twenty-two of us were fortunate to enjoy a week’svacation in a beautiful home aptly named "God’s Promise."Though we spent a great deal of time sunbathing on the

beach and swimming in the ocean, thechildren enjoyed evening swims in thepool and the adults relaxed on the upperdeck as the sun began to set. We alsoenjoyed an evening of violin musicperformed by a talented family memberand celebrated summer birthdaysgathered around the large table sharingbirthday cake. At night the beachessparkled underneath the moon, and wetook evening walks and shinedflashlights on sand crabs digging intowet sand.

Hatteras has an interesting history.First inhabited by Native AmericanCroatan Indians, it was later explored bythe Spanish, and then the English.Named "Hattorask" on John White’s mapof 1585, Hatteras it is believed to be anEnglish rendition of a Native Americanword meaning “there is less vegetation.”

Republican newcomers whoare lucky enough to break into big-time presidential politics most oftenfind themselves churned up in thefrothy waters of the nominationprocess. As they drift back out to sea, most are content with havingpositioned themselves for a future run.

Cain appears to be looking only tothe immediate future, however.Although it’s still early in the 2012 race, the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizzahas already impressed onlookers withhis personable style, his insightfulpolitical positions and his chummyrelationship with the Tea Party.

This last point is particularlynoteworthy, considering many punditsbelieve an alliance with the Tea Partycould be a potential campaign-killer.Yet Cain seems quite capable ofwalking the fine line between Tea Partypolitics and big-tent Republicanism –no easy feat. To win, Cain must attract independents andcrossover Democrats in the fall – without alienating his TeaParty supporters. Cain appeared to be laying the groundworkfor this strategy in early June when he announced he wouldhave no problem hiring an openly gay staffer.

For someone serious about earning the GOP nomination,Cain’s affiliation with the Tea Party can be risky, especially sincethe movement’s influence on presidential politics has not beentested. Yet Cain has proven throughout his career that he is amaster strategist, which means he must believe the Tea Partyhas an important role to play if his campaign is to succeed.

Born in Memphis and raised in Atlanta, Cain learned theimportance of hard work from his father, Luther Cain Jr., whoworked three jobs, and his mother, Lenora Cain, who workedas a domestic cleaner while rearing the couple’s two sons.

In 1967, Cain earned his undergraduate degree in mathfrom Morehouse College, and then put himself throughgraduate school by working full time as a ballistics specialistfor the Department of the Navy. In 1971– nearly a decadebefore the advent of the personal computer – Cain earned amaster’s degree from Perdue in computer science.

After graduation, Cain embarked on a career in thecorporate world, starting out as a business analyst for Coca-Cola. In 1977, he took a position with Pillsbury, and by the early1980s, he had risen to the rank of senior vice president.

Pillsbury executives recognized Cain’s shrewd businessacumen, and saddled him with the task of managing one of thecompany’s lowest-performing market subsidiaries: 450 BurgerKing stores in the Philadelphia area. In just three years, thestores Cain managed were among the organization’s topfinancial performers. His success earned him a shot at theposition that would ultimately turn him into a corporatemanagement legend. Pillsbury put him in charge of another

one of its failing subsidiaries, naminghim president and CEO of Godfather’sPizza. Though it was on the verge ofcollapse, Cain returned the business tothe black in just 14 months.

Although Cain is best known forthese business achievements, he ismore familiar with the inner workingsof politics than many might think. Asvolunteer chair of the NationalRestaurant Association in 1993 and1994, Cain endeared himself toconservatives by taking a vocal stanceagainst the universal health care plansponsored by the president and hiswife, Hillary Clinton. Many still seeCain’s opposition to ClintonCare as theprimary reason for the plan’s demise.

In 1992, Cain joined the KansasCity Federal Reserve Bank, one of only12 regional banks that advise theFederal Reserve. Cain ascended todeputy chairman before taking over aschairman in 1995. By all accounts,

Cain was highly respected as chairman before he left in 1996 tohelp Bob Dole derail Bill Clinton’s bid for a second term. Cainserved as the campaign’s senior economic advisor.

It would be another eight years before Cain would enterthe national spotlight as a political candidate. In 2004, he ranfor the Georgia Senate seat, which was then being vacated byDemocrat Zell Miller. Cain came close to earning his party’snomination, but ultimately lost in the Republican primary.

Cain’s presidential bid in 2012 was seen originally as a longshot, but he is now generally considered a serious contender.Ever the strategist, Cain spent 2010 visiting battleground statesand speaking at Tea Party rallies. In early 2011, he spoke at theConservative Political Action Conference and generated thekind of buzz typically only enjoyed by major politicians.

Cain continues to do well in hypothetical primarymatchups and early polling. In one, he edged Palin. In another,he was on par with Romney. A poll taken in his home state ofGeorgia, which Cain shares with fellow GOP contender NewtGingrich, showed Cain leading the former House Speaker by awide margin.

On May 5, Cain participated in a Republican debate withfive other potential presidential candidates on FOX News andblew away the competition with his polished responses, pointed manner and likeable personality.

The biggest challenge Cain will face is the hype factor. Thebetter he does on the campaign trail, the more scrutiny he’sgoing to attract from Democrats and opposition researchers.Conservatives have reason to be excited about Cain’scandidacy, but for the moment their enthusiasm is temperedwith caution.

After all, if conservatives learned anything from the lastpresidential election, it was to avoid getting too excited too fast.

Born in Memphis and raised inAtlanta, Cain learned the importance

of hard work from his father, LutherCain Jr., who worked three jobs, and

his mother, Lenora Cain, whoworked as a domestic cleaner while

rearing the couple’s two sons.

“Well, I finally did it. I finally decided to enter the digital age andget a cell phone. My kids have been bugging me, my book groupmade fun of me, and the last straw was when my car brokedown, and I was stuck by the highway for an hour before some-one stopped to help. But when I went to the cell phone store, Ialmost changed my mind. The phones are so small I can’t see thenumbers, much less push the right one. They all have cameras, computers and a “global-positioning”something or other that’s supposed to spot mefrom space. Goodness, all I want to do is to beable to talk to my grandkids! The people atthe store weren’t much help. They couldn’tunderstand why someone wouldn’t want aphone the size of a postage stamp. And the rate plans! They were complicated, confusing, and expensive… and the contract lasted for two years! I’d almostgiven up when a friend told me about her new Jitterbug phone. Now, I have theconvenience and safety of being able to stayin touch… with a phone I can actually use.”

The cell phone that’s right for me. Sometimes I think the people who designed this phone and the rate planshad me in mind. The phone fits easilyin my pocket, and flips open toreach from my mouth to my ear.The display is large and backlit, soI can actually see who is calling. With a push of a button I canamplify the volume, and if Idon’t know a number, I cansimply push “0” for a friendly, helpful operator that will lookit up and even dial it for me.The Jitterbug also reduces

background noise, making the sound loud and clear. There’s evena dial tone, so I know the phone is ready to use.

Affordable plans that I can understand – and no contract tosign! Unlike other cell phones, Jitterbug has plans that makesense. Why should I pay for minutes I’m never going to use?And if I do talk more than I plan, I won’t find myself with no

minutes like my friend who has a prepaid phone. Best of all, there is no contract to sign – so I’m not locked in for years

at a time or subject to termination fees. TheU.S.–based customer service is second tonone, and the phone gets service virtuallyanywhere in the country.

Call now and get a FREE Car Chargerand FREE Leather Carrying Case – a$43.99 value. Try Jitterbug for 30 daysand if you don't love it, just return it1.Why wait, the Jitterbug comes ready touse right out of the box. If you aren’t ashappy with it as I am, you can return itfor a refund of the purchase price. Callnow, the Jitterbug product experts areready to answer your questions.

Did You Know? Government WatchDavid vs. Goliath! A message from George W. Spangler, National Ambassador Director:

AMAC took on the considerable challenge of going face to face with AARP. They arethe Goliath. We are the David. We smile as we say: “and you know who won!” We arenow the largest conservative senior’s organization in the United States. But comparedto AARP, we’re still small. That is why we need a veritable army of concerned, convictedbelievers to help bring our conservative message to America. It is my hope…secondedby Dan Weber, our President and Founder…that you will join our army, or recommit tothe tasks we have ahead of us. We want YOU in our army…on the right side. For moreinformation on the Ambassador Leadership Program and how you can help fight thegood fight, email AMAC at [email protected]

Careful Now People on a lot of medications can get confused or forgetful about when to take

them. It’s easy to miss a dose or take too many. At Northwestern University in Chicago,Michael Wolf looked into data on 484 patients, ages 55 to 74. The patients were giveninstructions for seven drugs to be taken over 24 hours, and told to create the simplestschedule. The simplest was four times a day. But Dr. Wolf says fewer than 15 percentgot it right.

Fruits, Vegetables, & Chocolate! Flavonoids are antioxidants, commonly found in fruits and vegetables. A

systematic review and pooling of randomized trials found that consumption of cocoarich in flavonoids may improve risk factors for heart disease and diabetes.

Eric Ding is an epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. Hesays, “Higher cocoa flavonoid consumption reduced systolic blood pressure, reducedLDL cholesterol, the bad cholesterol, increased HDL cholesterol, the good cholesterol.”

The study, however, used flavonoid rich cocoa with balanced calorie levels.“In general, darker chocolate is better because they have more flavonoids.” The

study was supported by the National Institutes of Health and presented at an AmericanHeart Association conference on nutrition and physical activity.

A Different Kind of President Harry Truman was a different kind of President. But a measure of his greatness

may rest on what he did after he left the White House. Truman’s only asset at the time of his death was the house he lived in. His wife had

inherited the house from her mother and father and other than their years in the WhiteHouse, they lived their entire lives there.

When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reportedto have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps andpersonally licking them, granted him an “allowance” and, later, a retroactive pension of$25,000 per year.

After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home toMissouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don'twant me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongsto the American people and it's not for sale."

On May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor onhis 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have doneanything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

As President he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.Modern politicians have found a new level of success in

cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth.Today, many in Congress also have found a way tobecome quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of theiroffices. Political offices are now for sale.

Good old Harry Truman was correct when heobserved, "My choices in life were either to be a pianoplayer in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell thetruth, there's hardly any difference!”

Obamacare WaiversAMAC asks why the Obama

administration has granted over 1,400Obamacare waivers? If Obamacare is so good, why so many waivers?

The Daily Caller reported that of the 204waivers approved in April, 38 went tobusinesses in House Minority Leader NancyPelosi's district. Organizations who receive awaiver are granted a one-year exemptionfrom a new coverage requirement included inthe healthcare reform law enacted almost ayear ago.

On September 22, waiver applications willno longer be accepted, which could forceplans to close down or increase premiumssignificantly, leaving more people uninsured.Waivers were being granted mostly toDemocratic districts and organizations wholobbied in favor of the overhaul from thebeginning (Nancy Pelosi’s district nettednearly 20% of all waivers) while groups likethe AARP got waivers as well.

Social Security Tax ReformA message from Dan Weber, President &Founder, AMAC.

We’d like to take this opportunity toprovide AMAC members with an update onwhat we are working on currently. Based onour recent membership poll regarding SocialSecurity tax reform, an overwhelming portionof AMAC membership supports theelimination of the tax on Social Securitybenefits. On this issue, we have initiated acampaign to bring this issue to the attentionof Congress, and have started a dialogue withkey Congressional committees to considerthis problem. While the first steps on thisfront have been taken, much work remains tobe done. But rest assured, we will continue tofight for the reform of this onerous double-taxand will keep you all posted on alldevelopments moving forth. Thank you foryour support.

SUMMER HAS ARRIVED, and your local farmstand or farmer’s market will be piled high with an arrayof locally grown vegetables. Visiting the farmstand provides an opportunity to select fresh, nutritiousproduce in a good, old-fashioned setting. Local farmstands usually sell produce that has been pickedwithin 24 hours, allowing the fruits and vegetables to ripen on the tree or vine – thus retaining more ofthe vitamins and minerals that are lost during shipping. Taste and nutrition are maximized – almost asgood as growing your own. Try these recipes that showcase the best the season has to offer; a little bit ofsummer on a plate.

Look for brightly colored vegetables which have blemish-free surfaces, andregular, characteristic shapes and sizes.

Choose in-season fruits and vegetables. Buying at the right time of yearensures the best flavor and lowest price.

Remove and discard any bruised or nicked items from bags of produce. One moldy or slimy item can spoil the entire bag.

Buy only the fresh vegetables that you plan to eat within a few days. Long storage time reduces nutrient levelsand taste.

Don’t wash vegetables before storing. Make sure all produce is dry.

Store vegetables according to their type. Root vegetables, such as potatoes and onions should be stored in acool, dark place. Placing them in a basket or brown paper bag will allow air circulation. Asparagus, beans, beets, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower should all be stored in the refrigerator crisper drawer.

Wash vegetables thoroughly before cooking. Use a small scrub brush to help clean potatoes, cucumbers andother vegetables whose skins are edible.

Most vegetables taste just as good raw as they docooked – toss chopped vegetables into a saladalong with a variety of lettuces.

Try an alternative to the common boiling orsteaming cooking method; grilling (asparagus, corn on the cob), sautéing (green beans, zucchini) or roasting (carrots, cauliflower).

Consider canning or pickling summervegetables. Beans, carrots and tomatoes areespecially good for canning. Cabbage, cucumbers and cauliflower for pickling.

European settlers sparsely populated the Island andgardened, fished, hunted and raised livestock. Since a majorshipping route ran past Hatteras, near the Island’sdangerous shoals, they may have combed the beaches forlost cargo from shipwrecks.

The 1700s were hard on the Native Americans. Warringtribes, facing poverty and with no defense against Europeandisease, diminished. Settlers logged and let their livestockroam freely, causing destruction to Island vegetation.Shipwrecks were common due to strong currents, windsand storms. With so many shipwrecks, salvaging for lootbecame a viable occupation. The Outer Banks were a notedhaven for pirates including the infamous Blackbeard. In1846 a hurricane caused an Inlet to open, separatingHatteras Island from Ocracoke, thus forming the OregonInlet. The Hatteras Inlet was deep and navigable, so Hatterasattracted maritime traffic.

Visitors enjoy scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, fishingand bird watching. Cape Hatteras is located along theAtlantic Flyway, an important stretch of land for migratorybirds. Bring your vehicle and take a ferry across to OcracokeIsland to explore the "Pearl of the Outer Banks." Go back inhistory to the place where the notorious Blackbeard foughtand died in a naval battle. On Ocracoke, enjoy local wildlifesuch as the Ocracoke ponies; visit historic sites, shops andrestaurants. The Wright Brothers Memorial, located in KillDevil Hills, is another prominent site worthy of a visit. There’s a wide variety of things to see and do for all ages. Or,simply enjoy tranquil moments on the beach. It’s entirelyup to you.

Jutting out into the Atlantic, Cape Hatteras is alsoknown for being in the path of Hurricanes moving up theEast Coast. Hurricane Isabel struck in 2003, devastating theIsland which has since recovered. If you plan your vacationduring hurricane season, typically from mid August toSeptember, you are encouraged to obtain travel insurance.Your reputable realtor from Hatteras will be happy toanswer your concerns regarding coverage.

Our family gathering on Hatteras was quite memorable. As our children grow, it is pleasing to know they will havememories of time shared not only with siblings and parents, but with cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents. When Iclose my eyes, I can almost hear the waves meeting theshore, the eloquent violin music which filled the walls of"God’s Promise," and the sounds of our family singing thewords to "Happy Birthday," colorfully yet quite off key. As Ireminisce and replay scenes of our vacation in my head, onestands out in particular. It was a rather misty evening whenI captured a glimpse of my father and daughter strolling sideby side searching for shells in the sand. It’s one of thosemoments I’ll treasure forever. Make the Outer Banks ofNorth Carolina the beautiful backdrop to your memorablefamily vacation.
