From the Chairman

We are in the process of developing a new look website and hopefully by the time you read this it would already be live, going to look really great.

Late last year I got a call from Verena from Volvo Car South Africa, they were busy cleaning up their warehouse with slow moving items and offered 50 genuine LEATHER spare wheel bags – retail R1500 each to the Club, sadly I had to decline the offer…NEVA! I gladly accepted and they have been delivered and the boxes are standing here in my office! Thank you so much Verena AND Volvo Car South Africa. We will soon be posting more detail on how you can become the owner of ONE or TWO of these fantastic bags.

Have you ever thought about why you are a member of this Club? Are you in the Club for your benefit? Wondered why the Club exists? Have you ever thought of it in this way – YOU being a member of the Club and being an owner of one or more Volvo’s, classics and modern means that YOU are the custodian of the heritage & history of Volvo Cars in South Africa! If you own a 1971 122S you are unique in that they were only made in South Africa. Owning a classic Volvo makes you the custodian of the heritage and history of Volvo ALL over the world. You own a piece of the history of the marque, you are looking after the history, the heritage! Isn’t that something! So if you really love your Volvo, you really want to preserve it then it is important that we work together, that we remain intact as a Club. It isn’t about YOU or about ME or about anyone else – it is about that/ those Volvo(s) you own and all the others that are still on the road or somewhere in a barn or garage it is about maintaining the bond we have between each other and keeping the Club together and those classics on the road..

We are all volunteers and no one gets paid one cent for their time and effort that is put into the Club. On Facebook I am at the non - club members all the time – asking why are they not joining, and every now and again I get the question “what is in it for me?” and I think to myself actually each new member should be interviewed or screened…and asked “what can you offer the club?” and if the answer is not satisfactory the application should be declined…effe windgat maar iets om aan te dink.

We need to change the way we think, if we are members of the Club just to benefit then we shouldn’t be here, it should be a win - win situation.

In the end it should be the Club and our Volvo’s and our Heritage that should benefit. I have always had this “give and you shall receive” simple – when you give your hands are open and that enables you to receive, one that does not give, hands are clenched…closed hands cannot receive.

Thanks to each one of you reading this newsletter, it means you are a paid up member. Thanks to each one that has attended the events to date – we have had a great time up here – die mense daar innie mirrel en uithoeke van die land ons wag om te hoor hoe dit daar gaan

Volvo greetings - Loggies.

Volvo @ angela’s 2014

On 6 April 2014, SAMCA organised a successful 33rd Angela’s Picnic. A sea of classic, modern and unusual cars and bikes arrived for this charity event. But by far the most impressive collection was the Volvo Owners Club SA. Parked and exhibiting at the main entrance, the club ensured that everyone entering the park can appreciate and admire a stunning line up of 40…..yes, 40 Volvo’s!

Howard Bates says “Walking around, I believe we had

the most attendees of any other SAMCA affiliated club”. Amongst the Volvo owners we met up with 2 of our former chairman, Fred Kunniger and Phil McPherson. Also some senior Volvo owners Ron Kippen and Terry O’Gorman came to check that we still getting it right. A true testament that Volvo is for life.

Staff members from Tom Campher motors in Auckland Park Jhb was also present in “uniform” blue shirts. They hosted the Favourite Volvo of day competition and handed out snacks and bottled water. Nice folks! Members of the public could vote for their favourite Volvo present on the day.

Again a comments from Howard “There were at least 8

new Volvos on show from Tom Campher Motors, who

made their mark with a full TCM team, gazebos, cold

water, prizes and darn good friendship. This is proof -

don’t just sit back and expect it to

happen………….make it happen”

Great appreciation and thanks goes to Vic & Gerrit Campher and all their staff! The Favourite Volvo winners was kind enough to donate their prizes to the Volvo Owners Club SA. Congratulations to Loggies for taking first prize with Hersel in second place.

A few more highlights includes Phil McPherson winning the Bright Hubcap award, the nice exhaust beat coming Clive’s 544, Alex’s convertible 122, the aroma of wors rolls being prepared, sterling team work, good friends and great cars.

As a side note, it has to be mentioned that electronic media like Email, Facebook and SMS was used extensively to market events like Angela’s Picnic. I would like to encourage members to keep everyone updated of upcoming events and post pictures of past events. Dis lekker om te sien wat maak Volvo so great! Volvo regards, Brian Smal

Bang for your buck round 3 ½ -

howard bates

Well, we left “round 3” with a smoke filled dyno workshop…………….

Bearing in mind that the now problematic engine is bored beyond acceptable limits for the early B20 block, stroked to a point where the block had to be ground to ensure clearance for the big ends, reworked lengthened conrods and compression ratio on the high side (detonation) for 95 pump fuel………..my worst fear was a cracked cylinder and limited time to address the situation before heading for Europe.

Back home the head came off the and to my relief found that the oversized head gasket fireseals had failed on No 2 cylinder between the cylinder and the water jacket. There was evidence of eminent failure with the other three fireseals as well. Joint Seal immediately made up another gasket concentrating on the areas of concern and I sent the head for some “compression relief” within the combustion area. (this also allowed me to improve the combustion squish).

With days now running out, had to assemble everything again and Maurice of AutoRosen managed some quick late night tweaks. I was off to Durban to load her for Rotterdam with a spare set of fuel/air jets for the cold coastal conditions in Europe. She ran to Durban from Johannesburg like a dream on a tank of fuel travelling at ± 110/120kph.

On route to Durban – Midmar Dam

The final article (round 4) will only happen once we are back from Scandinavia, having done ± 9000km and the final dyno figures can only then be equated to monies spent.

Once out of the container in Rotterdam, she had privilege of being taken from the warehouse by fellow NL club member Tim and son Wouter Fennis behind their 245 Polar, where the roof top tent disappeared and final preparations for the ± 9000km Nordkapp tour begins.

The irony of this modification is that my goal was to build a stump pulling loads of torque B20 “+” something engine and the first country to traverse will be Holland….beautifully FLAT Holland.

WORLD OF CLASSIC MOTORING – Stu Johnston

Once again we ran the World of Classic Motoring in Hall 5 at the 2014 Rand Easter Show, hosted by myself and well-known F1 commentator Hendrik Verwoerd. And for the third year in a row the Volvo Club came to the party big-time with a mouth-watering display of classics that also included a few “new kids on the block” such as the C70 Coupe.

Brian Smal was the chief mover and shaker in arranging a collection of 10 cars and he also ran a flat-screen TV with DVD showcasing the club’s activities for much of the event.

Brian had included the club’s twitter and facebook and e-mail details on the DVD which ran on a loop, and he reports that many people contacted the club wanting to join.

That’s what the Rand Show event is about for me. Introducing classic cars to an audience that is rarely exposed to them. Being on the stage for 11 days, many people approached Hendrik and myself about contacting the club too.

Talking of the stage, up in the spotlight Deon van Loggerenberg gave us a fascinating account of his personal early involvement with Volvos, as well as the club’s runs to Vryheid and the Saamtrek, and it sparked interest straight away from show-goers inquiring about club contacts etc.

I think the show is great. We estimated we had between 5 000 and 7 000 people through our hall every weekend day. As there were a total of seven weekend days, that makes between 35 000 and 49 000 people that were exposed to the likes of P1800s, 122Ss and 544s.

Those are huge numbers, and it is always great for me first-time no classic people staring at the cars and then telling their kids or their wives or girlfriends all about them. Hope to see you back next year, especially with a PROJECT CAR OR TWO ON DISPLAY.

Converting to Electronic Ignition

Volvo Car SA announces top Dealers for 2013

Volvo Car South Africa (VCSA) paid tribute to its dealer

network at the 2013 Volvo Dealer of the Year (DOTY) at

a luxurious awards event last week. The event took place

at a Private Nature Reserve in the famed

Boekenhoutskloof area - the perfect backdrop for this

exclusive event. Well-Deserved Recognition - The annual

Dealer of the Year awards give recognition to Volvo's

dealer network in Southern Africa for commitment and

dedication to the Volvo brand but also for consistently

delivering excellent levels of service. Volvo is the most

human-centric car brand in the industry, and this carries

through from its world-leading safety technology to the

service received by each customer at a Volvo dealership.

As a luxury brand, Volvo is committed to delivering high

levels of service on par with its internationally recognised

levels of quality, design and performance. The task of

delivering this level of service naturally rests mainly with

Volvo's dealer network and Volvo Car South Africa's

dealers have once again proved that they are dedicated to

upholding the standards required of this prestigious brand.

Sales Dealer of the Year was awarded to Auto Baltic East

Rand for consistent and focused performance in exceeding

all Sales objectives for 2013 - these include customer

satisfaction scores. This is the second year in a row that

Auto Baltic East Rand scooped this award, which is a

superb achievement in a tough economic climate and

requires the commitment of the entire Auto Baltic East

Rand team. It shows that this dealership knows the value

of creating and sustaining a team that consistently

achieves and succeeds at its set goals and targets.

The Aftersales Dealer of the year award went to Tom

Campher Volvo Cars Johannesburg in Auckland Park.

This dedicated team recently managed to completely

rebuild and upgrade their premises to a standard that is

unsurpassed in South Africa.

Tom Campher received this same award last year, and they

were obviously determined to keep the trophy. This

illustrates what a team with passion for the Volvo brand

and a fantastic attitude can achieve. The Most Improved

Dealer award was snatched up by CMH Volvo Cars

Bryanston who managed to surpass their Sales target last

year. Furthermore, they achieved excellent results in their

year-on-year Aftersales and Sales targets, resulting in

them being the most improved dealership overall. Again,

it simply proves what dedication to customer service and

the Volvo brand can result in.

The coveted Volvo Dealer of the Year title was awarded

to Tom Campher Volvo Cars Johannesburg. Tom

Campher achieved this coveted accolade by ensuring that

they maintained excellent levels of service and

performance at all times. The team at this award-winning

dealership is performance-driven with a strong passion for

the Volvo brand and dedication to customer service that is

consistently raising the bar within the Volvo dealer

network.

As is the custom - Volvo presented its Managing

Director's Special Award for Excellence to:

- Auto Baltic Rustenburg - for excellent and

consistent performance in all areas.

- Volvo Cars Bedfordview - for being a consistent

top-performer during 2013.

The Managing Director's Award of Excellence is awarded

to individuals or dealerships that stand out from the rest.

The criteria for this award are entirely at the MD, Bram

van der Reep's discretion, but teamwork, passion and

leadership are undoubtedly the deciding factors. Volvo

Car South Africa takes great pride in being represented by

a national dealer network that is clearly dedicated to

maintaining the Scandinavian brand's standards of

performance, service and outstanding quality.
