Ceo's Message

It’s another new year and yet another year of hope! 2016 we have seen the collapse of a major ocean carrier and the dust has not settled yet. There are rumors that the existing giant carriers will buy out the smaller ones and there could be two or three consortiums operating and controlling the freight trade. How this is going to work, yet to be seen but a change is eminent for the good of the industry. In India, it is the new word ‘demonetisation’ that is doing the rounds. Every Indian citizen who is not even educated had learned this word much like the Tsunami till it actually happened. Everybody seems to be an expert in giving opinions post demonetisation effects which never happened anywhere in the world especially in such a large economy like India’s and that too when 85% of the currency had made no more a legal tender. We will have to wait and see what happens and how that will affect the Indian economy and the trade. Obviously there will be benefits and setbacks but will have to wait to know the final outcome no matter who predicts what. With the New Year we have a New American President who probably never thought he will be the president along with Russia getting close with America like never before will surely make an interesting world and world news will keep us surely entertained to say the least.Wishing all readers, a very Happy and prosperous New Year 2017

World's Largest Ethane Carrier Loads Its First Cargo

The ABS-classed Ethane Crystal, the world's first Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) -- and a Maritime Reporter & Engineering News "Great Ship of 2016" as profiled in the December 2016 edition -- has loaded its first shipment of ethane cargo at Enterprise Products Partner's Morgan's Point Terminal.

Delivered in November 2016, the Ethane Crystal is the first of six VLECs that will be delivered with ABS Class through 2017. The second vessel, the Ethane Emerald, was delivered in early December 2016. This state-of-the-art liquefied gas carrier is able to carry cargoes such as ethane and liquefied petroleum gases (LPG). With an 87,000 cbm cargo carrying capacity, the vessel was the first of its kind to be constructed with a specially designed GTT Mark III membrane cargo containment system.

The Ethane Crystal operates on a trade route between North America and India, carrying ethane that will be used as feedstock for petrochemical production. With its global reach and strong presence in the US, ABS is well-positioned to provide support and guidance throughout the vessel's life.

"Using vessels like this VLEC can help make expansion into new and emerging markets scalable and economical for the entire supply chain," says ABS Executive Vice President for Global Marine Kirsi Tikka. "As a trusted advisor, ABS provides support to owners and operators throughout the life of their vessels to advance safer and more sustainable shipping."

To Your Doorstep Faster than the Speed of Sound

The logistics landscape is changing faster than ever. Here's what it might look like in coming yearsBala GaneshBala Ganesh is Senior Director of Marketing for the US 2020 Team at UPS. He previously oversaw marketing strategy for UPS’s retail and consumer goods segment. He joined UPS in 2012 as product manager supporting UPS My Choice and social media/-mobile integration within the company’s Customer Technology Management group.Autonomous vehicles dominate the headlines. But they’re just one of the many futuristic technologies we could use to make deliveries in coming decades.Indeed, at some point in the future, the logistics landscape could barely resemble what we see today. Here’s an admittedly fanciful look at some of the cutting-edge technologies we could use one day to move goods faster, safer and greener.Let’s begin with the Hyperloop, a vacuum-tube transportation network that sounds like something out of a science fiction movie.People and packages could travel through low-pressure steel tubes in a capsule riding on a cushion of air .As envisioned by entrepreneur Elon Musk – and the numerous companies’ intent on implementing a version of his blueprint – the tubes would run at least partially on solar power. The Hyperloop could move people from Los Angeles to San Francisco in roughly half an hour.

As remarkable as that is, we also should consider the potential of the Hyperloop to revolutionize the delivery of goods as well. Truth is, packages could travel even faster than people between any two cities.

People and packages With a cargo-based network, you don’t have to worry as much about acceleration. Packages could move at higher speeds, along winding routes bringing cities closer together.

Goods could travel from Jacksonville in Florida to Los Angeles in just a few hours – connecting two of the nation’s busiest ports on opposite coasts. While much work remains before people can safely take this G-force-inducing ride, there are well-funded groups of entrepre-neurs and investors who have dedicated themselves to solving these engineering challenges. With test tracks being constructed, it looks more like when, not if, the Hyperloop is going to be up and running.Developers are planning to soon test pods at speeds of some 300 miles per hour. However, the Hyperloop is expected to eventu-ally move passengers at speeds in excess of 500 miles per hour –cargo will travel at even higher speeds.Speaking of high-speed options, the Electromagnetic Railgun – a futuristic technology unveiled by the US Navy in February could also transform the logistics industry. The tool uses electromagnetic energy to fire projectiles up to 4,500 miles per hour and can reach targets more than 100 miles away. The projectile is launched up to Mach 6 – more than six times the speed of sound. The Electromagnetic (EM) Railgun was designed as a weapon of war, but just imagine its potential reach as a delivery device. Instead of UPS flying a jet in the dead of night between Chattanooga and Atlanta, for example, we could shoot a series of bundled packages – equipped with parachutes – and land them in a UPS-owned field. What the future holds

By 2050, two-thirds of all people will live in a city. Roads will get even more congested, and the demand for goods in megacities will further test already strained transportation networks.

Cities like New York, New Delhi, Shanghai and London could become impassable in 30 years, forcing logisticians to rethink how they transport goods to the final stop. Unmanned aerial vehicles could deliver bulk packages at night, gently setting down the parcels on rooftops.

At UPS, we’ve been testing drones for their ability to deliver to hard-to-reach places. During the day, delivery workers – or even robots – would whisk these packages to their recipients using an array of small green friendly vehicles.Think electric mopeds, golf carts, Segways and other lightweight vehicles, such as UPS’s three-wheeled cargo cruiser , a pedal assisted electric bike. With the aid of such technologies, people would get what they want whenever they want it – and this ever-shrinking world would become more sustainable.

The Sicilian Mafia, also known as simply the Mafia or Cosa Nostra is a criminal syndicate in Sicily, Italy. It is a loose association of criminal groups that share a common organizational structure and code of conduct. The basic group is known as a "family", "clan", or "cosca" or "cosche" in Sicilian. Each family claims sovereignty over a territory, usually a town or village or a neighbour-hood of a larger city, in which it operates its rackets. Its members call themselves "men of honour", although the public often refers to them as "Mafiosi". The Mafia's core activities are protection racketeering, the arbitration of disputes between crimi-nals, and the organizing and oversight of illegal agreements and transactions.EtiquetteMafiosi of equal status sometimes call each other "compare", while inferiors call their superiors "padrino". "Compare" means "comrade", while Padrino" is the Italian term for "godfather".Ten CommandmentsIn November 2007, Sicilian police reported discovery of a list of "Ten Commandments" in the hideout of mafia boss Salvatore Lo Piccolo, thought to be guidelines on good, respectful, and honorable conduct for a Mafiosi.1. No one can present himself directly to another friend. There must be a third person to do it.2. Never look at the wives of friends.3. Never be seen with cops.4. Don't go to pubs and clubs.5. Always being available for Cosa Nostra is a duty - even if your wife is about to give birth.6. Appointments must absolutely be respected. (Probably refers to formal rank and authority)7. Wives must be treated with respect.8. When asked for any information, the answer must be the truth.9. Money cannot be appropriated if it belongs to others or to other families.10. People who can't be part of Cosa Nostra: anyone who has a close relative in the police, anyone with a two-timing relative in the family, anyone who behaves badly and doesn't hold to moral values.Cosa Nostra is not a monolithic organization, but rather a loose confederation of about one hundred groups known alternately as "families" (Despite the name, their members are generally not related by blood.) Each of these claims sovereignty over a territory, usually a town or village or a neighbourhood of a larger city, though without ever fully conquering and legitimizing its monopoly of violence. For many years, the power apparatuses of the single families were the sole ruling bodies within the two associations, and they have remained the real centers of power even after superordinate bodies were created in the Cosa Nostra beginning in the late 1950s (The Sicilian Mafia Commission.)

CLAN HIERARCHY

The Business Of The Damned

ACTIVITIES

1.PROTECTION ACTIVITIES2.VOTE BUYING3.SMUGGLING4.BID RIGGING

5.LOAN SHARKING6.FORBIDDEN CRIMES

Murders are almost always carried out by members. It is very rare for the Mafia to recruit an outsider for a single job, and such people are liable to be eliminated soon afterwards because they become expendable liabilities. Mafia violence is most commonly directed at other Mafia families competing for territory and business.Violence is more common in the Sicilian Mafia than the American Mafia because Mafia families in Sicily

are smaller and more numerous, creating a more volatile atmosphere. When a Mafia boss retires from leadership (or is killed), his clan's reputa-tion as effective protectors and enforcers often goes with him. If his replacement has a weaker reputation, clients may lose confidence in the clan and defect to its neighbours. Causing a shift in the balance of power and possible conflict. Ideally, the successor to the boss will have built a strong reputation of his own as he worked his way up the ranks, giving the clan a reputable new leader. In this way, established Mafia clans have a powerful edge over newcomers who start from scratch; joining a clan as a soldier offers an aspiring Mafiosi a chance to build up his own reputation

under the guidance and protection of senior Mafiosi.

The Business Of The Damned

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

Actually, there isn’t any art behind it. Just that we were born to be happy, and we can show this happiness with that beautiful smile of ours. A smile is so simple, yet so powerful. Some noticeable effects of external-izing our internal joy:

Smile at Work -Living under a routine, we can easily be in a zombie-like state when coming into work. We zip into work quickly following the same routines we’ve habituated. Our target is to get to work, and we can sometimes forget about the people around us, in other cubes/offic-es/departments. So, the challenge is to practice beaming with smile as you come into work. Smile genuinely with people we meet. Be completely pleased to see them. Make it a focus for the day, to bring more happi-ness into the lives of others. Ask them genuinely and infused with energy, “How are ya?” “How was your weekend?” Watch the smiles surface on their face as we smile at them.

So what will be our New Year resolution?

Happy New Year

Patricia Joseph

The Art of Smiling

Air Commodore Vishal was a Jet Pilot. In a combat mission his fighter plane was destroyed by a missile. He however ejected himself and parachuted safely. He won acclaims and appreciations from many. After five years one day he was sitting with his wife in a restaurant . A man from another table came to him and said “You’re Captain Vishal ! You flew jet fighters . You were shot down !“How in the world did you know that ?” asked Vishal. “ I packed your parachute ,”the man smiled and replied. Vishal gasped in surprise and gratitude and thought if parachute hadn’t worked , I wouldn’t be here today.Vishal couldn’t sleep that night , thinking about that man. He wondered how many times I might have seen him and not even said ‘Good Morning , How are you?’ or anything because , he was a fighter pilot and that person was just a safety worker .So friends , who is packing your parachute ? Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day. We need many kinds of parachutes when our plane is shot down – we need the Physical parachute , the Emotional parachute , the Spiritual parachute and the Financial parachute. We call on these supports before reaching safety . Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us , we miss what is really important .We may fail to say hello , please or thank you , congratulate someone on something wonderful that had happened to them , give a compliment , or just do something nice for no reason. As you go through this week , this month , this year , recognize the people who pack your parachute.I just want to Thank everyone who packed my parachute this year in 2016 one way or the other – through your words , deeds , prayers . Cheers for 2017…..

If you never start, you’ll never have a chance to fail. But you’ll never have a chance to succeed, either. So stop pretending you haven’t failed by not trying. Stop procrastinating and go for it.One of the main obstacles that I face on a daily basis is procrastination. I’m known to clean my room or re-organize my record collection when I really should be working on a big assignment or study for an important exam. I am a trailblazer in the ‘I-will-do-it-tomorrow’ category you can say. I’m pretty sure that most of the people are expert procrastinators like me. I even know people with explicit tricks and tools for it. But believe me, it isn’t worth anything. Doing things and completing tasks today, preferably right now, rather than keeping it for later should be the ultimate aim. Some procrastination-beating techniques are listed out below:> Time management> Changing perspective> Commit to assignments> Be realistic> Don’t indulge in fantasies> Plan for obstacles> Reward progressProcrastination is more than putting off tasks; it’s fear of action. The solution? Have faith in yourself, live in the present and set realistic goals you can successfully achieve. It worked perfectly for me. Hoping it does for you too fellow procrastinator! Neha

Overcoming Procrastination

Being born naked,Choosing the path of the Man, she loves.Bowing her head,Like the mighty cowBecame a feast To the manShe must love.Feeling the treble,Under the riffleShe came like Drebble,Fighting her freight.Pulling up herself,She fought her clashWith a clan, of strength and belief.Fought like a warriorAnd won like a ladyFlagging her victoryTo and fro.
