A. INSTALLATION OF THE CLIENT SOFTWARE

Important note:

If your software release is MAC OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or MAC OS 10.7 (Lion), you MUST

enable the native VPN without installing the Cisco VPN client. Please follow the instructions

in section Enabling VPN service using the computer’s native support

For previous MAC software releases, please follow the steps as indicated below:

Step A1:

Open your browser and type in the following url https://ucyvpn.ucy.ac.cy. You will then be

asked to provide logon information – username and password. These are the same

credentials as those you use to access your University of Cyprus webmail.

Step A2:

A list containing four different clients in .zip format will appear. Click on the one that reads

“Download Cisco IPSec client for Mac”. Download it, save it on your computer and extract it

to a folder that suits you.

Step A3:

After extracting the contents of the .zip folder you downloaded, the following icon shall

appear on your desktop. Double click on the icon to begin the installation process:

Step A4:

On the following screen that will appear, double click on the paper box:

Step A6:

If you are unsure about the version of your Operating System, click on the apple icon in the

title bar and then select “About this Mac”. If your version is 10.4 or greater click Continue to

proceed with the installation. Please note that if you have a version earlier than 10.4, VPN

client will not be able to run on your computer.

Step A7:

The Software License Agreement will appear next. Click on the Continue button:

Step A8:

Click on Agree to continue with the installation:

On the following screen that will appear, click Install:

Step A10:

A screen will appear informing you on the successful completion of the installation. Click

Close:

You can now proceed to configuring the client software. Instructions on how to configure

the client software can be found at:

B. CONFIGURATION OF THE CLIENT SOFTWARE

Step B1:

Go to Applications and double click on the newly installed application VPNClient:

On the following screen click the Import icon:

Step B3:

Search for the folder where you extracted the VPN Client after the download. Unless you

specified a different folder for saving it, it shall be under admin > Downloads >

MACVPNCLIENT. Click on the University of Cyprus.pcf file and then click Open:

Note that the process of importing the pcf file will be performed only once; there is no need

to repeat it each time you wish to connect.

Step B4:

The following message that will appear informs you on the successful import of the pcf file.

Click OK to continue:

Step B5:

Select the UniversityofCyprus entry and then click on the Connect icon:

Step B6:

You will be prompted to enter your credentials at the following screen. Username and

password are the same as the ones you use to access your University of Cyprus e-mail

account:

Step B7:

The yellow lock that appears before the status indicates that you are now connected to the

University of Cyprus’ network. If you wish to Disconnect, you can click on the Disconnect

icon.

C. ENABLING VPN SERVICE USING THE COMPUTER’S NATIVE SUPPORT

Step C1:

Open the OS X System Preferences (icon shown below):

Click on the network icon:

Step C3:

Click on the ‘+’ button, located in the bottom left corner of the Network screen:

Step C4:

In the new dialogue box that will appear, choose VPN for the Interface field, then Cisco IPSec

for the VPN Type field. You may complete the Service Name field with any name that you

wish to give to your VPN connection, for example UCY VPN. After you have completed these

three fields, click on the Create button:

Step C5:

Complete the Server Address field with ucyvpn.ucy.ac.cy. Enter your username and

password in the respective fields (you will be asked to provide your credentials every time

you attempt to connect to the VPN service). The username and password are the same as

those you use to access your University of Cyprus e-mail account. Once you have entered

this information, click on the Authentication Settings button:

Step C6:

Click on the Shared Secret radio button and enter the following key: 4p0m4kr1sm3n1

In the Group name field, enter remotevpn. Click OK and then Apply (The Apply button will

be located in the bottom right corner of the underlying window)

Step C7:

After completing the above steps (C1 to C6), a VPN entry will be visible on the left pane of

the the Network options as shown below. If you wish to connect to your UCY VPN

connection, click on this entry and then click on the Connect button.

Step C8:

If you tick the option Show VPN status in menu bar, then a VPN icon will appear on the

menu bar. Choose Connect to UCY VPN:

Step C9:

You will be prompted to enter your Account Name and Password (these credentials are the

same as those you use to connect to your webmail account. Enter your credentials and click

OK.

Once you have successfully connected to the UCY VPN, the following icon will be displayed

on the status bar, indicating that you have an active VPN connection and the time this

connection lasts:
