Our congregation is the first OromoSpeaking Evangelical church in theSouthern California first organizedas ‘the United Oromo Church – LosAngeles’ in March 3, 2003, by a Godgiven vision. During this time, undera very challenging situation, a com-munity of believers was organizedunder a name 'Waldaa oromoo' witha vision to reach the diaspora Oromowith Gospel of Christ here in GreaterLos Angeles and beyond in a cultureand language they better understand.The vision was given to us at a timewhen the people in our homeland,Oromia (Ethiopia), had been goingthrough many difficulties, such ashad never been experienced before.

Although Oromia has been called thebreadbasket of Africa, it has been hitby catastrophic drought and infec-tious diseases such as AIDS, and aMalaria epidemic which claimedthousands of lives and orphanedmany thousands of Children.

In the Empire States of Ethiopia, Oro-mos are exposed to misery and op-pression due to the systematicviolation of human rights and the ab-sence of the rule of law, includingdemocratic rights and justice. At thistime the repression of Oromos by theminority-led government has greatlyintensified.

High school, College and Universitystudents have been singled out andsubjected to detentions, being totallydeprived of their education, or, insome cases, actually killed outright.Many of the officials and prominentelders in the Macha-Tulama associa-tion (a civic organization) were badlybeaten and dragged off to prison,where they languished for years withno due process. This was also a timewhen many of Ethiopian’s neighbor-ing countries were surprised by theinflux of Oromian refugees withintheir borders.

One may ask why the people of Oromo were subjected tosuch terrible events, given that they were always a peace-ful and compassionate society who were generous withwhat they had, even to total strangers. They had commit-ted no criminal acts; had only demonstrated peaceably toexpress their feelings regarding years of domination anddiscrimination by a small ruling clique ethnic group.

It was at this critical time that Mr. Challa F. Diro and Imet, for the first time, at the Ethiopian Christian Fellow-ship Church, in Los Angeles. We talked about the situa-tion in our homeland that caused our people to feelhelpless and hopeless. Despite the international outcry foralleged human rights abuse by the Ethiopian government,the world turned a deaf ear. This is not to blame theworld community as a whole, but to draw attention to theintensity of the psychological and physical trauma ourpeople endured.

At the end of our discussion, we both determined that no-body can save our people except our God, and here iswhat the word of God says: “See I am the Lord, the Godof all flesh; is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27)

No, there is nothing too hard for Him! We decided tobring the case for our people in prayer, in front of theKing of Kings, the Lord of Lords, our God. We made aprayer schedule, together and separately. After a time, theSpirit opened our hearts to bringing Oromos together forprayer and the study of the Scripture.

Mr. Diro was able to contact Dr. Belay G. Olam, our fu-ture pastor, who was at that time, completing his doctor-ate degree in theology at the Fuller Seminary. This wasjust after we organized the Oromo Community of LosAngeles and area. This enabled us to meet people and in-vite them to our spiritual gatherings, which where then

held in individual homes. All Oromo and Oromo speak-ing individuals were invited, regardless of their personalbeliefs, and religious background. They were all enthusi-astic about worshiping their God in a language and cul-ture meaningful to them, hence a soon a strongworshiping fellowship was formed.

From the start we were also actively participated in bothspiritual and social events in our community. These in-clude, home bible studies, weddings, birthdays celebra-tion, soccer games etc. Soon our church beside the serviceof Word and Sacrament ministries, began offering socialministries such as writing support letters for Oromo asy-

lum seekers, help-ing them to get jobor housing in coor-dination with ourcommunity leaders.

Our Motto State-ment, at the timewas from the He-brews, “Let us holdunswervingly to thehope we profess, for

In July of 2003, our Church was invited to participate atUnited Oromo Evangelical Churches Associations minis-ters consultation and conference in Minneapolis. Dr. Be-lay Olam and I both attended and we received more

encouragement about our church, and a network wasformed.On November 13,2003, the church was incorporated underthe name 'United Oromo Church' in the State of California,and the same year in December we found a worship spaceat Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Beverly Hills. Beforemoving to this location, for a while we used to meet atDr.Gudeta Inika’s home and later gladly moved in to theMount Calvary Lutheran Church, with a good will of Rev.R. J. Perling and the Lutheran Missouri Synod, where it cur-

rently con-ducts itsregular Sun-day Worshipprograms inAfaan Oromo.

Since then wehave estab-lished a mis-sion statementto reach out to

other Oromos—especially in the

Metropolitan Los Angeles area-with the good news of JesusChrist. Beside active ministry here in Los Angeles, fromearly on we took an initiative to outreach the homeland.Our vision there has extended out to our homeland, Oro-mia, and our Church has contributed to the construction of“Doonni” Church, in the Eastern area. Our church mightwell be the first in the Oromo Diaspora to have made a fi-nancial contribution to the Oromo University Student Min-istry.

We are also helping the Haro Birbabo Church in remoteOromia. The evangelist of that Church was a very faithfulperson, who committed himself to serve God and his Com-munity, rather than for any personal gain. He and his wifehave five children.With our help, they received a monthlyincome to support their family and Geremew Leta went toBible College, graduated with a diploma and was ordainedas a pastor of the Church. Now there are three churches un-der the umbrella of the main church.

The West Coast Oromo Churches Annual Conference is al-so part of that vision. Nine years ago we visualized theWest Cost Oromo Church Annual Spiritual conferences.Thanks to be God, this year, the 9th annual conference will

be hosted by the Seattle Oromo Evangelical Church. Westarted completely from scratch, from human resources tomaterial and financial needs. We were committed servantof God. We were blessed with our Pastor, Dr. Belay Olam,who is pure of heart, and faithful to his God. Many individ-uals and families, invested their time and money for the re-alization of the conference, and strengthen of ourfellowship, from which I like to name families such as ofDr. Gudeta Hinika's, who unreservedly supported this fel-lowship financially at the time of our need and individualslike our brother in Christ, Rev. Abdi Tadesse, who was aseminary student at the time, and used to actively partici-pate in preaching, teaching and singing. Our Sister, Mrs.Alem Kebede was the only one singing and leading wor-ship at the early stage of our congregation-with no help-un-til Mr. Jira T. Boka joined has in late 2005 from Minneapolis.He is a gifted spiritual leader, who also services our churchas a preacher and teacher. Our Brother, Dr. Gemachis D.Buba, Oromian “Martin Luther,” has had a big impact onthe growth of our church, most especially when Dr. Olammade the decision to go to Ethiopia for Missionary duty.Dr. Buba played a major role in getting us the services ofour current pastor, Dr. Gemechu Olana. Since he arrivedthere have been many changes. Besides the material andfinancial outreach to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, wehave been able to reach around the world by utilizing ourwebsite, all due to the many God-given talents of Dr. Olana.

Since August 2009 we are a member congregation of the Pa-cific South West District - Lutheran Church Missouri Syn-od. We are extremely encouraged and empowered to be apart of this big God's Holy family and be in partner withthem in mission. Since 2007, the Pacific South West Districtregional Mission Council has generously supported ourministry, for which we are very grateful. Our hostingChurch, the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, has gener-ously offered their facilities for the worship and many othersocial ministries of our people. Word's may not fully ex-press our deepest gratitude for the Mount Calvary Luther-an Church members, and it leaders, especially Rev. JonPerling, for the ministry of love and welcoming they areproving us proceeding from love of Christ and it mission.

Beside supporting the Oromo Studentcam, campus ministry, we have beeensupporting one congregation in re-mote Western Shoa, Oromia regioncalled the Haro Birbabo Church.In 2008 God has opened our heart &mind to support this Church that usedto meet in small grass roofed hut atthe time, but now has grown to a con-gregation of more than six hundredmembers in a short period of time.

Garoma Lata, a future Pastor of theChurch had a short time training asan Evangelist. I got to known himduring my visit there in 2007. I foundhim an honest, ,faithful and obedientto both his God & the people he isserving. They have five Children. HisSpouse is just a house wife. Despitethe economic difficulties they werecommitted them selves to serve God& his people.

Actually, with our help, they receiveda monthly income to support theirfamily, and Gamma went to Bible col-lege, graduate with diploma and wasordained as a pastor of the Church.

During my second visit there in 2010,to my surprise, I found out thatthings were completely changed forgood. They built two big Churches,Haro Birbabo and Goro Dabe. There isnothing exaggerated in this, but just

fact. All of them, elders, Pastors, andCongregations combined their effortsto do these incredible jobs in this shortperiod of time. There motto statementis from (Nehemiah 2: 18 - 20) . At thethe present time there are fourChurches under the umbrella of themain church. They are spirituallyhealthy congregations, and dynamic.Within the three years period morethan 600 new lives come to Christ.

Reconciliation between God & man isthe purpose of the Gospel.; It publiclydemonstrates Gods love (2Cort 5: 18-20) The Gospel of Jesus Christ isblazing like a wiled fire in that part ofthe Country. They are spiritually driv-en, consumed by the call of theirLord, Jesus Christ, and focused onwining souls to Him. These people areplain real, with a selfless devotion toreach and introduce them to the re-deemer and most of all to demon-strate His reconciling love toeverybody in their community andbeyond.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Stillthere are a lot to be done. Resourcesare needed to train Pastors for thesenew Churches. " God is not unjust; Hewill not forgot your work & love youhave shown Him as you have helpedhis people and continue to help them (Hib 6: 10 ) " Evangelism is everything

we say and do weather it is direct-ly or indirectly that reveals thelove of God. Serving God is not aburden, but it is a privilege. Godbegan to convict us that with theprivilege of birthing process comesthe implied responsibility to sup-port for the nurturing.

As we celebrate our tenth anniver-sary, as a congregation, please letus consider to renew our pledgesfor out reach and mission amongour people, who are thirsty of theGospel of Jesus Christ, but unpriv-ileged in many ways.
