SpeedlimitsBuses and Parking major problem for child care centres
By Aaron Meredith
Speeding buses and a lack of parking are two of the problems facing teachers, parents and children in early childhood centres in Wainuiomata.
There is little to no road signs outside of many centres in the valley warning drivers to slow down.
Jack and Jill Kindergarten has been fi ghting with New Zealand Buses for many years, fi nally asking Hutt South MP Trevor
Mallard for help.It is only since he got involved
the bus company has responded. The kindergarten has two signs
warning drivers of the centre, but these were only put up after a child was hit by a car a few years back.
“It is only a matter of time before someone gets hit again.” says head teacher Chris Moses.
“I understand the drivers are on a schedule, but they are going so fast.”

The Smith family outside their house where they set up a Halloween display.
Continued from page 2Parking is also an issue,
especially around Wood Hat-ton, where Wood Street is narrow, especially when cars are parked on both sides of the road.
Teacher Hannah Mitchell says it can be quite congested, so they have had to use the large footpath in front of the centre for parking occasion-ally.
“Police have given us per-mission to use the area for parking.
“It is much safer for parents if they can park there and bring their children in,” says Hannah.
Both early childhood centres
are in 50km zones but both say traffi c travels through the areas a lot faster than the limit.
Hutt City Kindergartens Acting General Manager Tony DeLorenzo says the organisa-tion agrees that road safety around child care centres should be the same as schools.
He says education and im-provements in road safety are important, although he had not been told of any problems with buses around the organi-sations kindergartens.
“No one had made me aware of any problems.”
Trevor Mallard says that the situation around Early Childhood Centres needs to be looked at.
“I will be working with Hutt City Council in trying to get a policy around these areas.”
One suggestion was having a similar set up to what schools
have, where there is a 40km limit at certain times, as well as parking restrictions during certain times.
Buses and parking a major problem

Goblins, zombies and ghosts were floating around town on Saturday night when Halloween took place.
Once again 40 Totara Street was transformed into Wainuio-
mata’s haunted mansion, attract-ing visitors throughout the night.
House owners Goober and Michelle Smith say the plan was to be bigger and better than in previous years, and the family did not disappoint.
“I have been getting ideas and
making stuff since the start of the year, it was a lot of work,” says Goober.
This year the family trans-formed their garage into a haunt-ed maze, complete with hiding areas so people could jump out, as well as many scary props.
The family has been holding a haunted house for a few years, and draw inspiration from many different areas.
This year Goober designed grave sites in the back yard, and made more creatures that are designed to scare.

Wainuiomata High School’s top athletes were recognised for their achievements throughout the year at last week’s sports awards.
Awards were handed out to ath-letes in all sports, many of whom have represented Wellington and New Zealand.
Sportsman of the year was given to Raymond Seumanu for his achievements in boxing, winning multiple national titles as well as the Australian Golden Gloves.
He became one of the youngest winners of the award.
The sportswomen of the year award was awarded to Sieni Samau for her achievements in a wide range of sports.
Sieni was also the top player in volleyball, girls rugby, was the top scorer in football, was the best back in league, played for Wainuiomata in club rugby and league, going on to represent Wellington in both sports.
On top of that Sieni was also selected for the New Zealand rugby league Kiwi Ferns side to play Australia next year
The MC, Phillip Kauika who
says that the school has achieved to a high standard this year in all sports.
“Many teams have made fi nals, won championships or have represented the school at regional tournaments.”
Teams who won their grades included the girls cricket team, the football fi rst XI, teams two and three in netball, the boys fi rst xv in rugby and the junior boys league team.
This year was also the fi rst year that Ignite Sports presented two special awards, both recognising character in an athlete and coach.
Trust co-ordinator Kevin Goldsbury says that the awards are given to those that embodied Ignite Sport’s values.
“Despite the attention that poor behaviour and bad sportsman-ship attracts, there are great examples of athletes who demon-strate positive character in sport and coaches who effectively model it,” Kevin says.
This year’s winners were Paa Mailangi who won the character athlete award and Ngaire Blake who won the character coach award.
Both showed great passion for
Sporting achievements recognised
their sports and teams, helping their teams achieve their best.
Kalena Hura was also recog-nised by the school, receiving the principals award after 20 years’ service to school netball.
Other award winners were Stephen Graham, Joel Carman, Atiria Semmens, Jade Hum-
phrey and Brooke Tauaneai.School Principal Martin Isberg
says he was not surprised by the achievements of the students this year.
“We have spent the last three or four years changing the culture of the school, and the results this year are recognition of this.”
One sure sign of summer arriving is the call of the shin-ing cuckoo, a series of upward notes followed by one or more long downward slurring notes. The birds have come back to New Zealand to breed after wintering over in the Solomon Islands. They can be heard calling from forest, scrub and farmland, which are also the habitats of their host birds, the grey warbler. Like cuckoos around the world the shining cuckoo lays its eggs in another bird’s nest.
Also called the bronze shining cuckoo, scientifi c name Chryso-coccyx lucidas, or in Maori the PipiWharauroa, this sparrow-sized bird is usually not seen due to its cryptic markings and its size. It’s New Zealand’s only iridescent green bird and has green and white bands across its chest. The shining cuckoo lives on grubs and insects, including hairy caterpillars and ladybirds that other birds avoid.
It lays a single egg in the nest of a laying grey warbler, and the chick when it hatches ejects
the warbler eggs and chicks. The host then seems not to notice it’s parenting another species and continues to raise the chick. Fortunately for the grey warbler species, it has usually already raised a brood in August/September before the cuckoo arrives back in New Zealand.
A few years ago we heard a sound from the bush that could have been a bird or an insect, but even with the neighbours’ help we couldn’t fi nd what it was coming from. One day
however, I heard it in the beech tree outside the window, and looked out to see the cuckoo chick flitting from branch to twig noisily demanding food from a smaller and very busy grey warbler.
The two major threats to the shining cuckoo are fl ying into windows and being taken by cats. You can hear its call and learn more about it here. www.radionz.co.nz/nation-al/programmes/thiswayup/collections/birdwatching/shiningcuckoo

A WORD FROM
The work on a good, shared plan for Wainuiomata’s development over the next twenty years continues. This great work is largely due to the committed volunteers on the steering group and the community for joining in and sharing ideas.
There are great comments from the workshop on what should be happening in the town centre, a few I’ve noted were a lively centre with regular activities like markets and music, a good café, a revamped mall, and child friendly spaces with native plantings and public art and sculpture. It’s a great vision for Wainuiomata.
Now I am looking forward to seeing the suggestions for a design to mark the gateway to our beautiful Wainuiomata.
I attended Arakura School’s fi ftieth jubilee on 24 October. From 1965 to today, this school has had such an important role in our community. A good education in their early years sets a person up to be a capable learner for the rest of their life. I was pleased to see how much support
the school had at the celebration of fi fty years- because for any school to succeed in a community, especially a smaller place like Wainuiomata, it needs a lot of support, just like our young learners.
And fi nally, I was pleased to join members of the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade for their Monster Garage Sale fundraiser on 31 October. It was great to see it well supported; money raised goes to the Fire Brigade which is an absolutely essential organisation that’s made up of outstanding volunteers.
With warm regards,

Wainuiomata Primary School’s Enviro-Warriors are all set for this Satur-days Homedale Village Markets, where they will be selling plants they have grown to the public.
The Enviro Warriors are a group of students that take part in activities intended to help the environment, including gardening, craft activities, cooking and baking.
The group will be selling off native tree seedlings, among other plants and items, in order to raise funds for the programmes upcoming projects.
Parent Helper Miriam Exley says the students have really got behind the scheme.
“They all enjoy and love taking part in it, they have even got their parents into what is happening here.”
The Homedale Markets have been taking place in the village for many years, and always takes place on the first Saturday of October, November and December.
The markets take place between 8am and 2pm and host many stalls from various groups and people in the community, most of whom are fundraising for various reasons.
Miriam says they encour-age as many fundraising groups as possible to set up stalls at the market.
“We do not charge for fundraising groups, other-wise it is only $5 per table.
“The more fundraising groups the better.” For those who are want to set up a stall at the December Market please contact Miriam on 9727176 or head on to the Homedale Village Markets page on facebook.

The Wainuiomata Warehouse continues to give back to the community, supporting three more local groups.
The Wainuiomata Scout Group, Wainuiomata Primary School and Pukeatua Primary School all received donations made from every 10 cent bag sold.
Tony Upton from the Wai-nuiomata Scout Group says the
money will be going towards re-plenishing the group’s recourses.
“It keeps the fees down, so makes it easier to afford for parents.”
Marlene Bell from Wainuio-mata Primary School says the donation will go towards a new stereo for Jump Jam.
“It is really good to get the donations, it means we are able to get what we need to help the children.”
Tposy Remuera and Carmel
Kneepkens from Pukeatua Pri-mary School say the money will go towards the schools new multipurpose room.
“It is awesome to get this money, it means we do not have to rely on fundraisers.”
The money raised comes out of every 10c bag that is sold at the store.
The money is split between three community groups, help-ing give back to the community and support community projects.

Wainuiomata came out to support the group of people that help them, when the community got behind the Wainuiomata Fire Brigades Operational Support’s monster garage sale.
Items on sale included everything from baking to furniture, all donated by the community to raise money for the group.
Operational Support member Wayne Nicholson says the brigade is very thank-ful for community coming to support the garage sale.
“A special thanks needs to go out to “Major Ray Wallace, Mr Whippy, Hannah’s Bumble Balm, the women
that baked and sold the cakes and The Liquorice Lady.
“With the help of the community and small businesses we raised a little under $4500. Thank you very much,” Wayne says.
Also available were multiple raffl es for frozen chickens, a signed New Zealand Breakers top, a food hamper, a family photo session and the chance to have four fi remen come and help with some yardwork.
The next fundraiser for Operational Support is at the Community Hub Day on Saturday November 14, and the brigade is hoping to see as many people there as possible.

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace has recommended council trials free-parking in the city’s central business district.
This recommendation comes from months of discussion and workshops with the relevant community groups, led by Mayor Ray Wallace, Deputy Mayor David Bassett and Council offi cers.
Mayor Ray Wallace says, “We’ve had extensive discussions and workshops over the last nine months with retailers, local councillors and our hard working Central Community Committee around increasing the retail activity in our CBD, and it has been suggested regularly that a possible solution is to not charge for parking.”
“Waiving parking fees in the CBD may seem like an obvious solution to boost retail activity, but interestingly our offi cers have looked at a lot of studies from other cities, both here and abroad, and there is no evidence that it does so. But, those other cities are not Lower Hutt so that’s why we are going to trial some options and monitor what happens.
“It’s important that council listens to our residents and business community, and keeps an open mind on solutions.”
Mayor Wallace also adds that there’s no such thing as a ‘free-park’, which needs to be understood going into this. For example, despite the loss of revenue, there’s still the cost of parking wardens who need to continue to enforce time limits and ongoing maintenance costs.
The question of whether this cost is spread across all ratepayers or through targeted rates is another important issue to be dis-cussed and resolved. This is likely to be done as part of the annual plan consultation process in 2016.
The Mayor has asked council offi cers to research and present on three options, not charging for parking for a set period before Christmas, no charge for car-park users during major events in the CBD and a pos-sible “buy one, get one free” scheme where customers get two hours of parking for the price of one.
The fi nal decision will be made by coun-cil’s Traffi c Subcommittee in late November.
These options would be undertaken for a trial period. During that period the level of retail spending would be assessed, to see if no-charge for parking has a positive impact on retail spend.
Mayor recommends free-parking trial for Lower Hutt’s CBD

Local MP Trevor Mallard is getting behind the scheme to protect our national birds from threatening dogs.
Trevor is backing the Kiwi Aversion training which is taking place this week at the Catchpool valley.
The Rimutaka Forest Park Trust is holding the training on Saturday and Sunday down at the park, and Trevor is sponsoring $10 each for the first 10 dogs who go through the training.
“The training is known to work extremely well, my dogs have both been put through the training.”
The training takes about 15 to 20 minutes to make a dog ‘kiwi safe’ although it is recommended dogs repeat the training for a refresher.
“Kiwis are roaming much further from the park than they used to, they could be anywhere,” Trevor says.
“You never know when your dog could encounter a Kiwi.”
Trevor and the Rimutaka
Forest Park Trust is encour-aging as many local dog owners as possible to put their dogs through Aversion Training.
Cost is $10 per dog, and will cost no more than $30 for a family of dogs.
Dogs are awarded with a certificate for completing and the dogs ear will be tattooed as physical identi-fi cation.
The certificate is recog-nised all around the country, allowing your dog to enter Kiwi areas.

Clive’s Chemist, 20-21 Queen Street, Wainuiomata. (04) 564 8618 • [email protected] • www.clives.co.nz
Spring’s warmer and windier weather, often heralds the arrival of the hay fever season as well. This makes people feel miserable, with itchy eyes, runny nose, sniffl es, sneezes and headaches.
Hay fever develops because of an overactive immune system. This causes allergic reactions to certain substances in the environment, generally called allergens. Pollen is the most common allergen.
“People who get hay fever at this time of year have what is known as seasonal allergic rhinitis”, advises Clive, “but not everyone with hay fever reacts to pollen only at springtime. Many people suffer from hay fever symptoms all year round. They can be sensitive to animal dander, mould, and the house dust mite”.
The good news is that hay fever symptoms sometimes can be prevented and, usually, can be well-controlled. “Effective treatments are available”, says Clive, “but avoiding the things that ‘trigger’ your hay fever symptoms is a good fi rst step.”
If avoiding ‘triggers’ is not possible, antihistamine medicines can be effective to help with symptoms. There are many different antihistamines to choose from, either as pills, nasal sprays, or eye drops. Because some antihistamines can make you sleepy and may affect your ability to drive, it is important to get advice from the pharmacists at Clive’s Chemist regarding the best antihistamine for you.
There are also steroid nasal sprays which can be used for prevention if started before you are in contact with the allergen. Limited use of decongestants for blocked noses is also sometimes helpful.
Successful hay fever treatments are available from your Clive’s Chemist, so talk with our pharmacists about your personalised treatment.

“I have never let my vision defeat me. I like to think of it as playing the game of life on hard mode.”
So says Chilton St James’ 16-year-old Britnee Tapara in her biography submitted to Chris Bishop as part of the process to decide who would represent him in the Youth Parlia-ment to be held in July 2016.
Tapara, who is legally blind, has a passion for programming and technology. She says that when she got her fi rst laptop she made sure she could do anything she ever dreamed of in the com-fort of her visual boundaries.“I admit sometimes a lifelong disability is a hard pill to swallow at my age, but the lessons I have learned in my mere 16 years are many. The truth is, if given the
option, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
"I wouldn’t be the young woman I am today without my experiences. I wouldn’t have seen the problems that need to be addressed. I wish to share the views of the youths in my community to help our government learn what needs to be done".
A keen equestrian rider, gaming enthusiast, singer and vision-impaired artist, Mr Bishop says he is impressed by her passionate advocacy for youth issues.
“Britnee is an exceptional young person. All of the applicants were very talented and would have made great Youth MPs, however Britnee’s determined advocacy for disabilities and mental health awareness made her a standout,”
says Mr Bishop.“I was touched by Britnee’s
compelling advocacy for youth mental health. This is an area I feel very strongly about myself. I know Britnee will do a good job bringing her passion, insight and commitment to this area to Youth Parliament next year”.
Asked what message she had for other young people, Tapara said that young people needed to have confi dence in themselves and to follow their dreams.
“Just because you have a dis-ability doesn’t mean you shouldn’t follow your passions. Don’t listen to those who doubt your abili-ties, because the best art comes from those who dare to express themselves.”

A fi tting victory
By Aaron Meredith
It was a successful start to the season for cricketers in Wainuiomata, with wins in all grades.
In the First Grade, Wainuio-mata defeated Hutt District by 7 wickets, chasing down 144 in 25 overs.
This is the second win for the season for the side, with the club defeating Eastern Suburbs over Labour Week-end.
In the Intercity One Day grading games, Wainuiomata started off the season well, defeating Victoria University by six wickets.
There was a battle between two Wainuiomata sides in the T/20 grade.
Brownie ended up winning by seven runs, holding off Rosco who were charging hard for the total.
Next week the fi rst grade side is at home against Northern Park, the fi rst ball is scheduled
for 12pm at Bryan Heath Park.On the fi eld next to the fi rst
team, the One Day squad plays Petone Riverside at 1pm.
In the T/20 grade, Brownie faces the Hutt District Young Guns and Rosco plays the Taita Titans.
Both games are at Richard Prouse Park at 2pm.

Over Labour Weekend Wainuio-mata High School played host to the Ulalei Touch Tournament.
The tournament was held by Ulalei Sport in partnership with Sport Wai-nuiomata, bringing together family teams from around the region.
The tournament was opened by Ulalei senior member Steve Mer-edith emphasising that the goal of the day was ‘ãiga (family), fun and
participation. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by all
with 10 family teams playing in the touch competition while there were activities for the children taking place in the school gym.
Food was provided by the local Kanana Fou Church putting on a sausage sizzle, rice and chop suey.
Hutt MP Trevor Mallard and NRL Penrith Panther Tupou Sopoaga
popped in to watch some upcom-ing local talent that included the Umaga-Jensen brothers and Sieni Mose.
The outright winning team was The Kingdom of Tonga.
Special thanks to the following who donated spot prizes for the event: Clive’s Chemist, Butcher and Brewer Gastro Café, Hutt MP Trevor Mallard and Ken Laban.
The winning team, The Kingdom of Tonga.
Ulalei touch tournament a success
It is a sad thought thinking we will never see Ma’a, Conrad, Tony, Keven, Dan or Richie play in a black jersey again. For those that woke up in the early hours of Sunday morning to watch the 34-17 victory that gave the All Blacks their third world cup, we all witnessed something special. What we witnessed was six legends leave the international game on top, Tony Woodcock was unfortunately injured, but he was still given the perfect send o .There was one amazing performance on the day, and it was not Dan Carter’s man of the match performance, or Ma’a Nonu’s 50 metre try, it was our captain’s performance. All the talk of David Pocock and Michael Hooper dominating the breakdown never came true, yes they were good, but Richie was better. He took control of the breakdown early and other than a few glimpses of form by ‘Pooper” (Pocock and Hooper) he never let it go.In the press conference Steve Hansen said Richie is the best ever to grace an All Blacks jersey, I don’t know as I never saw some of the greats but of the players I have seen, I can’t think of an argument otherwise.148 test matches, two world cup victories, he has won the Tri Nations/Rugby Champion-ship more than anyone else, he was held the Bledisloe aloft for his entire career as captain. Then there is Dan Carter, he has never lost the Bledisloe Cup, he is widely known as the best rst ve eighth ever, he always found a way to shut the doubters up.I know it’s unusual that I am giving credit to Cantabrian rugby players, but I will likely never see these two in a red and black shirt again, they are All Blacks forever, they are the best I have seen play the game, as a fan, I do feel a bit indi erent about that.Tony Woodcock and Keven Mealamu were great servants to the game in this country, they were up there with the best in their positions. Then there are the two Wellington players, the amazing mid eld pairing of Ma’a and Conrad, in my mind the greatest mid eld pairing ever.I don’t think I will ever see a centre combina-tion like that, but then again a lot of people thought that when Walter Little and Frank Bunce retired. These six men leave a massive hole in the All Blacks team, but we should always remember, that hole will be lled again by someone else.

The Wainuiomata Junior Darts Club celebrated a suc-cessful season last week.
The club held its annual prize giving, presenting its players with awards for what they had achieved throughout the year.
Jeanne Silcock says it was a great night and everyone had a blast.
“Our junior and youth play-
ers have had a fantastic sea-son and each player deserved the awards they collected.
“I would like to mention that Jasmyn Strang and Con-nor Grindlay have reached the age limit of junior darts and we wish them all the best as they move into the senior ranks. Both have represented Wainuiomata Junior & Youth Darts giving a hundred per-cent at all times and we will miss having you around.”
Top awards this year were given to Wendy Herman for her all round work as a Convenor.
Georgia Pattison was the most improved Junior and Stephen Brinfiled was the most improved youth.
Katie Smith won the excel-lence Outside Junior Darts award.
“This year Katie competed in the Capital Area Char-ter League second division
where her team finished fourth and also Katie is the fi rst junior (9-13 year olds) to be selected in the Wai-nuiomata senior ladies Rep Squad.”
Ben Herman was awarded the Shining Star award after winning the New Zealand Junior Darts Singles.
“Ben is also playing in the senior league on a Thursday night where he has a few wins already.”
