Smokefree cars
By Aaron Meredith
A local smokefree campaign is about to go national because of the hard work of a group in the valley.
The Wainuiomata Smokefree Car Campaign has seen the formation of the National Smokefree Car Group, which aims to make it illegal to smoke in a car with a passenger.
The campaign is the work of the Hashtags, a group of youth spending their time spreading their message as far as they can.

Leah Davis from the Hutt City District Health Board is proud of the group that she helped create and says it is great to see how far their message has spread.
“The community has responded to it, the Hashtags laid the foundation for all these campaigns around the country, now they are getting recognised for it.”
A study at Otago University com-pleted two years ago found children in Wainuiomata were eleven times more likely to be exposed to cigarette smok-ing in cars than in Karori.
It was then the group was formed, working hard to spread their message.
They have since adopted the saying, ‘smokefree cars – that’s how we roll’.
Around Wainuiomata there are many cars with bumper stickers showing their support to the campaign. Clubs and com-munity groups are also backing the drive.
Since forming two years ago, the group has even managed to take their message to Parliament.
Originally Maori Party MP Tari-ana Turia was a major supporter of the Hashtags, but since she left her party that role has been taken over by Marama Fox.
It is with this support in Parlia-ment that gives Leah the most hope about seeing change.

Wainuiomata residents are tired of the current spate of robberies plagu-ing the valley at the mo-ment.
Last week, the Coast Road Dairy was robbed, after a man entered the store armed with a gun.
He threatened the dairy staff before leaving a short time later with only cigarettes.
No one was injured during the incident, but
police say it is always frightening for people involved.
The offender is de-scribed as olive skinned and of slim build and average height.
He was wearing a blue coloured hoodie, carry-ing a backpack and had a bandana over his face.
Pol ice say they are conducting enquiries to locate the offender.
They are asking anyone in the area with any infor-mation to contact them.

Two teenage girls who rescued a man out of the water near East-bourne have been recognised for their bravery.
Cousins Payge Olds and Kelly McKay both received Safety in the City awards at a ceremony last week, recognising them for the bravery they showed that night.
The awards are presented by the Wellington City Council.
In March, the two girls were with a group of friends at Burdan’s Gate in Eastbourne, when they were approached by a stranger with the news that someone was drowning.
Without hesitation, sixteen-year-old Payge jumped into the sea and swam over 70 metres to reach the drowning man.
Two others, from the shore, helped Payge find the man, who was completely submerged when she reached him.
Payge then dragged him to shore and her cousin Kelly per-formed CPR until emergency services arrived and took the man to hospital.
Sadly the man later died.Payge said the awards cer-
emony was something they had
not experienced before.“It was so intimidating, every-
one was so professional, we kind of felt like fi sh out of water.”
Payge said she didn’t feel like they deserved the award as it was something “anyone would do”.
“I defi nitely think we should feel proud for what we did, it is an incredible honour to get the award really.”

Pukeatua Bridge has taken its place on the summit of the Wainuiomata Hill, marking a milestone in what is a signifi -cant upgrade for the area.
Councillor Campbell Barry is happy with how the process worked, saying it went exactly as planned.
“It will look great once all the work has been done to the summit, it will be a real asset to Wainuiomata.”
The placing of the bridge happened early Thursday morning.
The Hill road was closed for an hour as the bridge was lowered into place by a crane.
Cr. Barry says the plan is
for the bridge to be opened sometime this week and in the meantime, workers are making the area safe for people.
“This is only the beginning of the work that will be done on the hill, next is the shared cycle and walkway, which will benefi t the community in a much larger capacity.
“We also have plenty planned for the summit, including a new viewing platform, and upgrading the top look out.”
A video, posted on YouTube, shows the entire process tak-ing place. To view the video, head to YouTube and type ‘Pukeatua Bridge’ into the search bar.

A chance to learn what it would be like to walk with dinosaurs was too much to resist for many Wainuiomata residents last week.
As part of the Walking with Dinosaurs programme, which was held at the Wainuiomata Library, GNS scientists Dr
Hamish Campbell and Dr Karyne Rogers had a large crowd on their hands.
It was not only the children who showed interest in what the scientists had to offer, many adults also asked questions about their favourite prehis-toric creatures.
The show is a joint effort be-tween both GNS and Hutt City
Council to bring science into the community, and encourage children to get interested.
Dr Rogers says the pro-gramme is presented at librar-ies because “they are the ideal place”. “It is an area where people can easily come to, and there are many resources here where they can learn more about the subject.”
Dinosaurs invade the libraryOn display were many fossils
that scientists have gathered from around the country and children were invited to look and touch.
A slide show was also shown displaying all the different types of dinosaurs around the world and some that have been found in New Zealand.
Dr Campbell, a paleontologist, told the children about the his-tory of people fi nding dinosaur fossils in New Zealand.
“The first fossil found in New Zealand was found in the Hawkes Bay by a lady called Joan Wiffen.
“She was not even a profes-sional paleontologist, she just had a keen interest in fi nding dinosaur fossils, anyone can fi nd fossils if they have an interest.”
A model foot bone fossil was shown around the room, dis-playing the size of the bones in the foot of a dinosaur.
“Our bones in our foot are only about one centimetre long, while this one is about fi ve or six centimeters long.
“It means that the dinosaur was about fi ve of six times the size of us,” says Dr Campbell.

Have you ever thought that writing a novel could be up your alley? Keen Wainuio-mata residents now have a chance to give it a go.
The National Novel Writ-ing Month (Nanowrimo)
begins in November and the Wainuiomata Library wants everyone to give it a go.
Librarian Alexia Herrera says that the library is set-ting up a space so people can come in and start writing.
“Anyone can come in and write something.”
The challenge of nanow-rimo is to write a 50,000 word novel.
The only catch – they have to begin on November 1 and fi nish by 11.59pm on November 30.
The library is also hosting four workshops, to help
children who want to take part in the challenge.
These are taking place on November 4, 7, 11 and 14.

There are many reasons people give for moving into Woburn Retirement Apartments in Lower Hutt.
Some want to get away from the worry and cost of maintaining a large family home by moving to a brand new, purpose built facility, others want the freedom to travel and enjoy life knowing their home is safe, secure and looked after.
Some retirees are looking for an independent lifestyle but with the companionship of neighbours at a similar stage of life, and for many, it’s about having the security of knowing additional support is close at hand from Woburn Home when it’s needed.
But as village sales agent Allan Davidson explains, the icing on the cake is discovering the apart-ments are owned and operated by Enliven, part of the not-for-profi t organisation Presbyterian Support Central.
“For many people it’s what sets Woburn Apartments apart from the rest because it means they’re giving back to their community when they choose Enliven,” says Allan.
Hutt Valley retiree Betty Smith moved to Enliven’s Woburn Apart-ments in November last year and says there is something special about the not-for-profi t organisa-tion.
“I like that the profi ts don’t go into shareholders pockets, instead it goes into improving the place
and keeping it going,” says Betty, who was also attracted to the beautiful surrounds, fl at land and independent lifestyle.
“It’s also easy to get around and go for walks because it’s fl at, I can go outside and sit in the sunshine and I can make my way around easily. It has the best view, the best sun and it was affordable.”
Betty has now lived in her Woburn Apartment for almost a year and knows she’s made the right choice.
“For somebody that wants
independence and to have easy access to fresh air and sun, this is the place for them.”
Enliven’s Woburn Retirement Apartments are located at 29E Wai-iti Crescent in Woburn, Lower Hutt. Open days are being held every Wednesday in October from 10am to 11am. All are welcome to attend. For more information, call the village sales agent, Allan Davidson, on 04 439 4949, or visit www.enlivencentral.org.nz.

There’s a whole lot of art hap-pening at Hutt Valley’s Mix and Karen Collier wants people to know it’s ‘changing lives’.
The Wainuiomata artist thinks Mental Health Awareness week, which runs between October 5 to 11, is the perfect opportunity to involve others.
Mix is a not for profi t organisa-tion that supports those who live
with the experience of mental illness, through a variety of crea-tive and life skill opportunities.
Before discovering Mix, Karen felt very isolated by depression.
However, it all started to change when Karen saw a Mix group exhibition at Odlin Gallery and was inspired to try out Mix for herself.
Two years later Karen has found the support she needed to turn her depression around.
Karen’s preparing for her fi rst solo exhibition, My Zen Place, which is testament to the growth and resilience she’s developed.
As part of Karen’s on-going recovery she engages each week with Mix’s extensive art pro-gramme.
Mix has a wide range of art activities including carving, woodwork and pottery, but right now Karen’s focused on painting and zentangle drawing.
Mix also offers a comprehensive Community & Wellbeing Pro-gramme which builds important life skills such as healthy living and vocational opportunities.
Mix Art Tutor Michael Rai-mona, is also a Wainuiomata local. As a practising artist with a Bachelor of Visual Arts he brings a wide range of skills to Mix.
This lets Michael engage with the interests and needs of each participant. He’s passionate about
the effect Mix has not only on individuals but also our wider Hutt community.
‘Mix’s impact is huge in terms of connections with the commu-nity and with personal wellbeing’ says Michael.
Karen Collier’s exhibition, My Zen Place, opens 5.30pm Friday October 23, all welcome. Mix Gallery 212 Knights Rd, Tuesdays 3.30pm-5pm until Tuesday November 24.

A WORD FROM
WAINUIOMATA...
We had a stunning, clear and still day and night for the installation of the newly named Pukeatua Bridge (a Maori name meaning Summit of the Gods) on 30 October /1 September.
My thanks to all the people who worked through the night – from GHD, Fulton Hogan, and Council’s Road and Traffi c team- to install the 43m long structure.
Thanks also to the road users for enduring the unavoidable disruption to traffi c while this work takes place.
While the bridge is installed, it won’t actually open until the end of October because there is still a lot of work to do with connecting pathways and associated other work, we’ll keep you posted on progress.
This bridge is part of a programme of work on the Wainuiomata cycleway project, which received $1.5m from the Government's $100 million urban cycleway fund.
The project will provide a shared cycling and pedestrian path
connecting Wainuiomata with the wider Hutt Valley-as well as the recreation tracks in the surrounding hills.
We also received funding for other walk and cycle pathways in Lower Hutt, and in time there will be terrifi c network out to the eastern bays, around the Valley fl oor, and through to the Wellington CBD.
And fi nally, a reminder to join in the fun: The Dowse Square Ice Rink has proven to be a hit, it’s had some great themed parties, and good general open days so don’t miss out on this fun experience- it closes on 26 October.
Until next time,

Arthritis affects our joints. It causes damage to the joint structure and surrounding tissue, causing considerable pain and physical disability. Half a million New Zealanders will have the disease at some stage in their lives.
A normal healthy joint has a rubbery substance called cartilage that covers the end of each bone and provides a smooth slippery surface against which the joints move. It also acts as a shock absorber to reduce the impact of everyday physical activity. However with arthritis, the joints are swollen and stiff. There is often joint deformity, pain, redness and heat. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
In osteoarthritis (OA) changes in the joints cause the cartilage to break down. Large weight-bearing joints, like hips, knees and spines, are affected the most. “Being overweight can lead to osteoarthritis because of the added pressure on the joints”, says Clive. OA comes on gradually, over many years.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an auto-immune disease, which means the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues. The joint lining becomes infl amed and swollen and fl uid builds up in the joint cavity. In severe RA, the joints become deformed - affecting people’s ability to move. RA symptoms tend to develop more quickly than with OA and the disease occurs more in younger people, most commonly between the ages of 30 and 55 years.
“Although there is no cure for arthritis, a wide range of effective medicines are available to treat the swelling and pain, and for modifying the course of the disease (in the case of RA)”, advises Clive. “Some medicines are available only on prescription; some need our recommendation before they can be sold. Remember always to talk with your doctor or pharmacist about any medicines you take for arthritis, so you are taking the best one for your condition and not doubling-up.”
Lifestyle modifi cations – such as weight loss, exercise and physical therapy - are core components of OA management. Medicines are the cornerstone of RA management, however a good balance between rest and exercise is also important.
Help. I’ve got sore joints.

A late step in by the govern-ment has prevented the demolition of historic tramping huts in the Orongorongo Valley.
National MP Chris Bishop along with Conservation Minister Maggie Barry stepped in at the last minute, saving what is considered a major part of the history of Wainuiomata.
The valley, which can be accessed from the Rimutaka Forest Park just south of Wainuiomata, is full of huts which are all privately owned.
If an owner of one of these huts dies, there is no current law which allows their owners license to be transferred to their family.
Member of the Orongorongo Club, Ian Hutchings says instead the license is passed on to Depart-ment of Conservation (DOC)
and then the huts are usually demolished.
“This affects the ability for the general public to use huts in the area.
“We need to take a common sense look at things and make a better policy.”
The huts are an integral part of the history of not only the Orongorongo valley, but of the entire Wainuiomata community as well.
Many of Wainuiomata’s residents have stayed in these huts, or at least tramped in the area.
Ian says the club has approached the government in an attempt to try and preserve the historic huts.
“We want the government to help us to keep the huts, and have eve-ryone to take a more collaborative approach to this,” says Ian.
“The situation on the West Coast is a great example, it is what we want to achieve here.”
Ian says on the West Coast DOC works with families and locals al-lowing the huts to be handed over to family members, however, they continue to maintain them at the cost of the government.
Mr Bishop says it is vital that the huts are kept as they are.
“It harks back to the number eight wire mentality that made New Zea-land. It is defi nitely an important part of the history of the country.”
For those that are interested in the history of the area, the Orongorongo Club has just released a book. The book can be bought from the club by emailing [email protected] and can also be borrowed from the library.
Putting a stop to hut demolition
LOCAL HISTORY: Ian Hutch-ings and Chris Bishop are hoping to preserve the local history of Wainuioma-ta and the Orongoron-go Valley.

Sports with Aaron Meredith
Well, a team I support nally won a nal, but I had to wait until after full time to see it happen.Down 16-12 with mere seconds remaining, I thought that was going to be for the NRL Cowboys, another team I support losing at the nal hurdle. But that was until a bit of magic happened, and it wasn’t even from Jonathan Thurston.A miracle pass from Michael Morgan after the hooter meant that the scores were sud-denly locked up.Then to add to the drama, JT’s conversion hit the post, the grand nal was going into extra time. That was really only the beginning of the drama, Broncos half Ben Hunt knocked the ball on from the kicko , Cowboys ball. Then what ensued was the Cowboys trying to kick a eld goal and the Broncos making it hard, that was until Thurston found some time and sent the ball through the uprights, game over, Cowboys win.As a sports fan, I could not have asked more, I get more of a thrill seeing a team win in the last second than I do if they win by 40.A one point win leaves you with so much more satisfaction than a blowout, fans feel the emotion that the players do, that is what makes sport so special. And what a nal it was, full of thrills and spills, it was close, the crowd was amazing and the players were feeding o that.As a spectacle, that was the best game of league I have seen in a very very long time, it is just a disappointment that international league is not like that at all.But this isn’t about international league, it is about how as a fan, I felt every moment of that game.As I saw the players lift the trophy, I felt joy, but it won’t be anywhere near as much joy as I will hopefully feel when the All Blacks win the world cup.
What a Final!

An injured knee is not about to stop Jake Whitaker in his quest for another national trials championship.
Jake injured his knee a couple of weeks ago, and now is in a race against time to get ready for the labour weekend event.
“I can fi nally put weight on my leg now, I will be getting on the push bike in the next couple of days, and hopefully be able to get on the bike in the next week.
“I should be able to get a couple of days on the bike, I am confi dent I will be ready,” he says.
Jake is aiming for his eighth na-tional trials championship, his run of consecutive victories was ended last year when British rider Jack Sheppard defeated him.
This year’s championships are in Taranaki, which usually provides some different challenges for the riders.
“They usually have some of the course in the rivers below Mt Tarana-ki, so the rocks are extremely slippery.
“It’s a bit different to what we usually have to contend with, and is quite fun.”
Outside of training for this years nationals, Jake has his sights set on heading over to Romania to compete in the 2016 Romaniacs event.
Romaniacs is an endure event which is considered one of the toughest competitions of its type in the world.
Jake is aiming to be able to compete in the gold class of the fi ve day event, which takes riders all over Romania.
Jake is trying to raise enough money to get over to the event, and is trying to get an AMP scholarship.

Some of the top BMX riders in the region hit the valley over the weekend, as the local BMX club hosted its National Qualifying Meet.
The day also doubled as the Wainuiomata BMX champs, so riders had even more rea-son to ride as hard as they could.
In what would be a bonus to all the riders, no one was injured, meaning that the Wel-lington Free Ambulance in attendance was not needed at all.
The BMX Club wants to thank all that turned up and competed in the day’s competi-tion, they also want to thank the Community Patrol that was in attendance, making sure no one was doing anything suspicious.

Jake getting ready for Nationals
By Aaron Meredith
Even though Cameron Forsyth is only a year out of primary school, he is already making his mark in the national running scene.
He has just returned from helping Wellington retain the Phil Costly Shield, for the sixth time in the last 10 years.
The Phil Costly Shield is the prize given to the top region in the country, with the latest championships being held in Blenheim just last week.
The championships are open to children between years 5 and 8 at school, meaning that Cameron still has another year left in this grade to make his mark.
His seventeenth place fi nish meant he was the sixth Wellington runner at the fi nish line scoring some vital
points for the region. The Harriers season in Wainuio-
mata is drawing to a close but this didn’t stop the local club taking on one of the toughest challenges of the season in the form of the Round the Hills handicap race.
The race takes competitors up the fi re breaks from the top of Upper Fitzherbert Road, then follows the breaks right round to the top of the Wainuiomata Hill then through the streets back to Wise Street, all adding up to a gruelling 12.8km.
This was not made any easier thanks to the cold and wet conditions that were battering the region at the time.
All the runners fi nished the course in just 90 minutes, and the entire fi eld fi nished within 3 minutes of each other.
Young runner shows skill
To get this scholarship, he must get enough votes, so he wants as many people as possible to vote for him and get him over to Romania.
To vote head to the web address www.vote.doyourthing.co.nz/appli-cant/1386 and follow the online instruc-tions.
TOUGH RIDER: Jake Whitaker is getting ready for the upcoming nationals, despite an injured knee.
