Retiring after 33 years

LAST LETTER: Sue Manihera delivers her last letter, the longtime Wainuiomata postie is retiring after 33 years of service.

By Aaron Meredith

A much loved and longtime postie is hanging her bike up after 33 years of doing the rounds in Wainuiomata.

Sue Manihera retired last week, and says she will miss the interaction with many of the people in Wainuiomata.

“I always enjoyed meeting people and getting to know families in the community, we have a wonderful community here,” she says.

In her 33 years Sue has seen many of Wainuiomata’s residents grow up, move out of the valley, move back into the valley, and families grow.

“I got told by someone that I used to deliver mail to them when they were children, now I am delivering to their children.”

Midnight Special

Continued from page 1In 1982 Sue decided that

she wanted to be a postie and went into the old Post Offi ce, located next to where Trevor Mallards offi ce currently is.

“In my interview they asked me if I could ride a bike, and when I wanted to start,” she says.

“I said I could start when-ever they wanted, so I started the next day.”

The first day on the job made Sue think twice about the job, as she was still deliv-ering mail at 7pm that night, her husband was driving around the community look-ing for her.

“The next mor n ing I thought I was going to be in trouble for not fi nishing only to fi nd that when it got dark everyone stopped and did the rest the next day,” she says.

After originally thinking she would only be in the job for three months, Sue quickly found that she did not want to stop.

“The more I did the job, the more I found that I could not

give the job up.”Sue says that she enjoyed

the job thoroughly and there is so much good in the com-munity.

“I have made many friends inside NZ Post and in the community,” Sue says.

“People would always have something to show me, a gar-den, a photo, some knitting or they just wanted a chat.”

Many stories were shared with Sue from the history of Wainuiomata, including when there weren’t many houses and the mail was delivered by horseback.

“I got told a story of when the cows from the top of Hine Road would walk down to Burden Ave and eat eve-ryone’s front lawns, I love stories like that,” she says.

“Also people were so gener-ous, a family gave me scones on Lees Grove, and the man in Reed’s Mowers gave me lollies.”

When asked when she was going to retire, Sue’s answer was that the day they don’t see her she had either passed on or won lotto.

“I haven’t done either of those, I have just retired, let the young one’s have a go,” she says.

“I wouldn’t have wanted any other job, I will miss eve-ryone.”

NZ Post put on a big party for Sue on her last day, which she says she en-joyed very much, and would like to thank all her coworkers for setting it up.

Postie Retires after 33 years

By Aaron Meredith

The bridge on top of the Wainuiomata hill is not too far away says Councillor Campbell Barry.

The new date for comple-tion is set for September 23, three weeks after the intended time originally.

“The delay has come for a number of reasons, weather being a major factor,” says Councillor Barry.

“There have been a few other reasons though.”

The bridge on top of the hill is being placed there to make sure that there is a safe way to cross over the hill.

It is part of an upgrade of the hill, which includes a new cycleway over and a new viewing platform.

Councillor Barry says that he is excited about the view from the top of the hill.

“The view from the bridge is going to be amazing, I was up there the other day and it is an incredible view.”

Wainuiomata’s chosen plan for the next 20 years has been released, and those in the group are excited to share it.

Two members of the Wainuio-mata development group, Ben McLennan and Leah Clark, both say that this plan is setting the path for Wainuiomata in the next 20 years.

"We’re building a story to de-velop our great little town to con-nect our ideas and aspirations for the way our suburb develops over the next 20+ years,” says Ben.

“This week we’ll be sharing where we are at with all the feedback from the community

at the workshop, expo displays and online."

The plan is set to use what Wainuiomata is famous for, its pioneering spirit and its neigh-bourly resilience, showcasing what Wainuiomata has to offer so more people invest in the valley.

The input of the Wainuiomata Community is also a key aspect to the plan, with people encouraged to let the group know what they want to see happen.

"Wainuiomata’s already a hap-pening place, now we’re asking people what do you love about Wainuiomata and how can you make it even better?” says Ben.

Leah Clark says the group’s goal is all about making Wainuiomata

residents feel at home in Wai-nuiomata.

"Our goal? You might say it's a feeling of breathing easy, It’s that feeling you get driving back home over the hill,” she says.

"Council’s investing over $20 million of new projects for Wai-nuiomata budgeted over the next 15 years, so we’re keen to see all that and more."

Later in the month the group will be asking those around the town centre how they can start making a difference both today and in the future, although some ideas are already taking place now.

“One of the things we’ve heard from a lot of people is the idea

of making the hill road fun and creating an iconic gateway to Wainuiomata, the new summit bridge is the beginning of that,” says Leah.

“We’ve also spearheaded a group to look at adding more to the hill to create a distinc-tive Wainuiomata journey that connects people to the rest of Wainuiomata , Council’s putting in a shared walking and cycle path and we can use that to begin that journey.” The group is organising pub-lic meetings soon, and all the times and dates will be put up on the facebook page facebook.com/wainuiomata2035 or on the website Wainuiomata.org.

inbriefnewsAvalon Park getting upgraded

By Aaron Meredith

The Wainuiomata Com-munity Board is seeking your input into naming the new bridge on top of the Wainuio-mata Hill.

The bridge which is set to be completed by mid-September has sparked much debate within the board as to what to name the bridge so they have

decided to put the idea out to the community.

Community Board Chair-man Karl Dickson says that any name is possible, just as long as it relates to the com-munity.

“It could be a person, some-thing that signifi es something about Wainuiomata, anything really, we just want to hear what the community has to

say,” he says.Suggestions for naming the

bridge can be sent to the email [email protected] or dropped into one of the many drop boxes that will be placed around the valley.

Entrants must have their name suggestion, 150 words describing why that should be the name of the bridge, and also your contact details,

so the board can contact you about the suggestion.

“The chosen name could be suggested by a fi ve year old, it could come from anyone,” says Karl.

The suggestions must be made before October 31 so the board can start putting the name through the necessary processes they have to go through.

Naming the bridge up to you

A park that many people around the Hutt Valley region use is getting a two million dollar upgrade.

Avalon Park is getting the upgrade in an attempt to make it a regional attrac-tion where families can come and enjoy themselves all day long.

The northern end of the park will feature a playground suited to children under the age of ve, and some of the current features will stay.

Most of the new play equipment will come from Germany.

The consequences of a Hangover

When was the last time that you turned up to work after a big night out?

A recent poll by The Southern Cross Health Society shows that 61 percent of Wellingtonians have admitted turning up to work hung-over.

The ramifications of this could be terrible for you if you have done this before though as most workplaces see this is serious misconduct.

A badly hung-over person could also be in breach of many occupational health and safety guidelines.

Many professionals recommend that you do not drink the night before you go into work.

Another Famous Wainuiomartian

Our Article last week on the famous people that have come from Wainuio-mata has unearthed another name that many would not know about.

Malcolm Dunford captained the All Whites in the 1980’s, and played in the 1982 Fifa World Cup.

He played 62 times for New Zealand and scored 5 goals.

The Wainuiomata News would like to thank Richard Eddy for making us aware of this, and also would like to encourage anyone else to let us know about some famous people in Wainuio-mata we have not mentioned yet.

Please email [email protected] with the name and what they are famous for.

inbriefnewsSpirit Week at School

By Aaron Meredith

Wainuiomata High School is playing host to 27 students that have come from countries all around the world, and everyone involved loves it.

The students come from both Europe and Asia, including countries such as Denmark, Spain, Taiwan and China.

The students have all been fully integrated into the school, having their own time tables,

going to classes and mingling with the members of the school every day, including going to the school formal.

Homestay Co-ordinator Nata-sha Baker says everyone at the school loves having the students there, including both the staff and the school students.

“The students are always ask-ing them how different it is for them back in their own country, it is great for them as they are learning about other cultures,”

she says. The students are all staying at

homestays around the valley, and Natasha says that without them, this wouldn’t be possible for the school.

“The homestay families are key, the school really appreci-ates those that are currently hosting students and that have done it in the past as well,” she says.

The students themselves love the experience, some had never

heard of New Zealand before deciding to come to the country on an exchange.

They all say that everyone at the school has been very welcoming to them, and will all miss everyone when they do have to leave.

The students are all at the school for different lengths of time, some are here for only a few weeks longer, while some are here until next year at some point.

Wainuiomata High School gets all international

HAPPY TO BE HERE: The international students at Wainuiomata High School are all enjoying their experience at both the school and in Wainuiomata as well.

By Aaron Meredith

Wainuiomata Residents will have even more of an excuse to stop and admire the view from on top of the hill with a new viewing platform being approved.

In June this year council approved funding for the plat-form that will be situated next to the car park at the Lower of the two lookouts.

Councillor Campbell Barry

who has been working be-hind the scenes to make the viewing platform a reality is extremely excited about the progress that has been made.

“Our hill offers one of the best views in the region, and this platform will take that view to the next level,” he says.

Councillor Barry sees this as a real turning point for the hill, which is in the midst of some major upgrades.

“We have the bridge which will be completed next month, a four metre wide walk and cycle path being built over the next two years, and now a viewing platform that will help attract more people from all over the place,” he says.

“For years the hill has been perceived as a barrier and hassle by many, but now I think we are going to start seeing how much of an asset it truly is.”

The next challenge that Councillor Barry wants to meet is how to attract visitors to the hill into the valley itself.

“The hill is a gateway to everything else Wainuiomata has to offer, and we need to make sure people learn that when they come and visit.”

There is no set completion date yet for the viewing plat-form, but Councillor Barry says they are aiming for early 2016 at this stage.

Viewing Platform approved

Wellington experienced a cold snap last week with a polar southerly bringing snow to some places. Dustings of snow were reported on Wrights Hill above Karori coupled with large snowdrifts in Johnsonville. There were a lot of road closures across the country - Rimutaka Hill Road between Wellington and Wairarapa was closed last Wednesday, The New Zealand Transport Agency opting to close the road completely from 7.20pm Wednesday and reopening it again 9.20am on Thursday.

LETTERS to the editor

Dear Ed, It was good to see the disabled parking space outside Clive’s Chemist in Queen St be put in place.

It has a lengthy space which enables people to get their wheel-chairs, walking frames etc. out of their car boot and then proceed up the new gutter ramp to do their

shopping, probably medicinal supplies from Clive’s.

Unfortunately there are drivers in Wainuiomata who are not entitled to use this parking space and think to hell with the disabled, the park is empty I’ll use it.

On Thursday morning about 11am I saw a woman park in the

Dear Ed, I have just read your article in the Wainuiomata News, Wednesday 5th August 2015 news-paper.

I couldn't agree more with your comments & I thank you for having the guts to write about it & stand up for what you believe in.

I have felt awful for the recent

bout of racism & racist comments made by spectators directed at certain sports players, notably the rugby players highlighted on National News in recent weeks. In my opinion racism is unacceptable & refl ects badly on our community & society as a whole. It shouldn't matter what sports player's look like

& we shouldn't be judging them by their appearance anyway but by their ability to play well & have a positive attitude.

Thanks for your article about rac-ism. Much appreciated.

The gym in Fraser Street in Wai-nuiomata which I regularly attend and there are always a large amount of young men attending too.

In the Gym it has a boxing bag except when it comes to me it’s an Empathy bag, I give it a hug.

I done a course on living without violence and they said ‘‘punching breeds violence '' which is true and the course recommends not to use

punching bags. People have choices though and

they accept me as I am at the Gym and by doing that they have Empa-thy for me.

One the lads called out to me in jest giving the bag a man hug.

But in writing this letter I am creat-ing an awareness of Empathy we live in a country with a pioneering spirit and it is the kiwi culture and

in many case people are isolated and marginalised which leads to discrimination.

I have spoken about meltdowns in the community and making Safety plans empathy is key word in my safety plan and it going on the gym in Fraser Street is accepting difference

space, get out of her car and run, yes run as it was raining, to an-other shop down Queen St. then in the afternoon around 4pm a utility vehicle parked in the space, but he was very considerate, he shifted his vehicle as far back in the space as possible, presumably to leave enough space for a disabled driver in front, but of course he blocked the gutter ramp.

It was only a few minutes after he left his vehicle that another car arrived and took the rest of the disabled space.

Come on Wainuiomata drivers, think about others and what these disabled parks are for, don’t be so tired, and get a little exercise by walking the extra distance.

Empathy not confrontation

Diligent readers might have noticed that my col-umn on Baring Head has been absent for the last few months. My apologies for that, but, in mitigation, my wife and I were overseas for a couple of months and I returned to about 3,000 new emails. Mass delete” is a great function! For-tunately, we missed most of the bad weather but had to cope with temperatures in the thirties and forties for much of our trip. We experienced a bit of thermal shock when we arrived back home.

In the meantime, things are proceeding apace at Baring Head. The fence along the river escarpment and the river itself has now been completed, as has this year’s planting programme. The Greater Wellington Regional Council has in-stalled a line of traps fund-ed by the Friends along the neighbouring Orongorongo Station boundary to pro-vide extra protection for a banded dotterel colony, installed some Timms traps to protect plantings alongside the river from possums, cut out a bridle track for horse riding, and erected a fence to protect a small wetland close to the Fitzroy Bay beach. Many thanks to the Infi nity Foun-dation which contributed most of the funding for the Orongorongo Station trap

line and to the Station own-ers who gave us permission to install it.

We are now gearing up for the next year’s work. The biodiversity effort will include more weed control and double this year’s plantings as well as installing bait stations to control rodents and pos-sums. We also intend to make substantial progress on restoring the lighthouse complex and are eagerly awaiting a concept plan which enable us to prepare an action plan and budget. Then, all that remains be-fore we start work is to fi nd the money and people needed to get the job done.

The Friends and the Coun-cil are now developing the volunteer work programme to support all this work. Current thinking is that it will focus over the next 6 to 9 months on weed control and trapping and maybe work on the lighthouse site. Most of this work is light and would suit schools and youth groups as well as business and community groups.

If you would like to help, please contact me on 478 4391 or at [email protected].

The Wainuiomata High School 1st XV has made it to the Premier Three fi nal in two weeks, but only just.

Played in terrible condi-tions, both teams struggled with handling errors, and the low scoring game was a result of this.

Onslow College pushed

Wainuiomata hard through-out the entire match, show-ing amazing character throughout the game, which in turn forced Wainuiomata to be able to as well.

It took a last minute try and penalty to get Wainuiomata the lead, with Jade Gillespie scoring all the teams points.

The side will now play Newlands College in the

fi nal in two weeks, the game will be played at St Patricks Silverstream.

In other results from the school the 2nd XV won their game by default, and the Under 15’s went down heavily to HIBS by 50-12.

In senior rugby the Premier Reserves ran in five late tries to book a fi nals place against Oriental Rongotai

next Saturday.Trailing late, Wainuiomata

upped their game to win 29-16 to secure the victory, the fi nal will be played at Polo Grounds at 2.30pm next week.

The colts unfortunately could not replicate this re-sult, going down 49-5 to Oriental Rongotai in their semifi nal.

It was just one step too far for the Wainuiomata Lions in the Wellington Rugby League Grand Final on Saturday.

The fi nal score of 36-6 showcased how on top Te Aroha was throughout the game.

At halftime the score was 18-0, and soon after it was 24-0 until Wainuiomata gave themselves a sniff of a chance when Frederich Keil scored to make the score 24-6, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Te Aroha deserved to win on the day, they turned up to play in the fi nal and showed why they had only lost one game throughout the entire season.

Although they will be disappointed with the re-sult, the club can be proud of themselves this year, making the fi nal and being one of the dominant forces in the second round.

In the senior fi rst division the Indigenous Lions stormed through to their Grand Final with a 48-8 demolition job of the Porirua City Phoenix.

They will now play the Randwick Kingfi shers in the Grand Final, which is set to be played at Hutt Rec next week at 1.00pm.

Heartbreak in Grand Final

This past weekend saw the return of the Bar-clays Premier League, the top fl ight in English Football, the league that gets us New Zealanders the most interested in football.

To some people in this country, if it is not rugby or league, they don’t care, but let me tell you, there are more football fans than you think.

Most people have a team in England, whether it is from time spent in England, a family member who has, or just because they saw the team on TV once.

My team, and I am not ashamed to say this is Manchester United, and before you say typi-cal, follow the top team, I would support Man United even if they were in division 6, they are my team now and they always will be.

I know of people that support many other teams, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and all are as passionate as I am about their teams.

This is the one time that you see so much interest in a league that doesn’t involve a New Zealand team.

The drama that is involved, the passionate crowds, the close games, everything makes it an exciting game to watch, an exciting game to follow.

It is my dream one day to stand at the Stretford End of Old Trafford and watch a Manchester United game, enjoy the atmosphere, feel the energy of the crowd, watch the best players in the world.

And just because I can, a small message to a former co-worker that I have had many football conversations with over time, a friendship that has developed through the love of the game, he knows who he is.

United 1 Spurs 0, that’s all for now.

The Wainuiomata senior hockey side showed why they are on top of the table, after dominating the second place team Kapiti 4-1 on Sunday.

In what was their strongest performance of the season the team was up 3-1 by half-time, keen to stamp their mark early in the game.

Kapiti were then deter-mined to come back in the second half before Wainuio-mata upped their game again, adding another goal late to bring the score out to 4-1.

Goal scorers for Wainuio-mata were Jo Martin, Navada Blake and Paris Coleman who scored two.

The team which is de-lighted with the win is now

well ahead in fi rst place as they head into the last round of regular season play next week.

The High School side un-fortunately had another loss, going down 3-1 although they created many goal scor-ing opportunities, Navada Blake converted one.

The Junior sides all had great wins over the weekend.

The year 3/4 team defeated Eastern Hutt 2 by a huge 10-1 margin with Lania Vaireka and Billie Va’a getting play-ers of the day.

The Year 5/6 side also defeated Eastern Hutt 2 won 5-3.

The Year 7/8 team comfort-ably defeated Marsden 9-2 with Pacey Johnson securing player of the day.
