team has already started selling make up, provided by G er ma n compa ny SANTE.

The main concentration of the group is on creating accessories for a Go Pro camera, by using a 3D Printer.

One student Damien Mc-Donald designs the con-nections and says they can make parts much cheaper than they are sold at.

“There is one product that can be sold at $80, but we can sell it for about $20,” he says.

The teams Marketing Director, Ruby Gardner says that team has so much further they can go with the business.

“The possibilities are end-less, our business has so much potential that we can go with,” she says.

Trevor Mallard was im-pressed by the students

work, and even offered to help with getting the message across.

“I have a facebook and twitter page that I can share the links

on,” he says.He was also impressed by

the designs that the team were coming up with, especially for

the Go Pro’s.“The Go Pro market is huge,

and people will defi nitely jump at this sort of stuff,” he says.

Wainuiomata will not be losing its Kiwi Bank services, with United Video taking over all face to face banking services.

It has been announced that the New Zealand Post Shop in the mall is closing its doors, but services will remain in the valley at the United Video Store in The Strand.

Owner of United Video Da-

vid Williamson says that the only Kiwi Bank Services that customers will need to leave Wainuiomata for are complex transactions like applying for a home loan or opening a new account.

“Kiwibank customers can still make withdrawals, depos-its, get account balances, cash cheques and pay their bills in Wainuiomata,” he says.

All the Post Shop services will take place at United Video

as they were at the old Post-Shop, including postal, courier and photo ID services.

David was confused with what MP Trevor Mallard said about placing some business at risk due to the post shop moving out of the mall.

“If Trevor wants to come around and discuss the prob-lems with businesses in Wai-nuiomata he can anytime,” says David.

“People in Wainuiomata want

to spend money in this town.”David will be coming up to

Wainuiomata from his offi ces in Blenheim for six weeks to make sure that the changeover runs as smoothly as possible.

He and his staff are com-mitted to provide the best possible service to the people of Wainuiomata.

“This is an opportunity that makes us a viable business, everyone is going to keep their jobs,” he says.

The Wainuiomata Community Patrol is looking for some help from the community.

The patrol is run by volunteers who drive around the valley acting as another pair of eyes and ears for the police force.

The donations are needed for upkeep of the car, as without a car the com-munity patrol would not be able to continue.

If anyone wants to donate please look on the give a little page https://givealittle.co.nz/org/wcp.

A local Wainuiomata man has been on a mission lately, organising a comedy night to raise money for the baby Mila and her family.

Neville Isherwood has or-ganised the event, in hope to raise money for the Gar-diner family who need to raise $100,000 to get Mila to the United States for life changing surgery.

Neville has known the fam-ily through work, and felt that it was time to help out someone in the community.

“People helped me out when I needed it, so I felt it was my time to give back and help out someone that needs it,” he says.

The acts confirmed for the show include Michelle A’Court, as well as local talent Jerome Chandrahasen, Alice Brine, Rob Harris and Bas Jeffrey.

“The acts are top class, I asked Jerome to perform and then he organised everyone

else to perform,” Neville says. The show is taking place at

the Lower Hutt Little theatre on Friday June 19, and there are only 300 spots available.

“The Council donated the room, and there is also a sound system being donated as well,” says Neville.

All the funds raised on the night are being given to the Gardiner family who need to raise $100,000 to get Mila over to the United States for surgery.

Mila suffers from a rare form of Cerebral Palsy called spas-tic quadriplegia, which means that when she gets excited or emotional her body stiffens up so she cannot move.

This even causes her to spit out food that she likes, be-cause her tongue stiffens up when she enjoys some food.

Neville says that all the effort is worth it knowing that Mila will have a better life after the surgery.

“Knowing that a little girl can live more comfortably makes it all worth while.”

Thursday’s storm may have caused some fl ooding in the valley, and people got very, very wet, but Wainuiomata carried on as best it could during the storm.

Many properties were fl ood-ed, including some down Main Road and Hine Road, and there was heavy f looding down Parkway area as well.

The Creek that runs in be-tween the schools down in

Parkway overfl owed and the road turned into more of a part of the creek than anything else.

Konini Street also fl ooded, causing problems for parents coming to pick up their chil-dren throughout the day.

Konini School Principal Andrea Scanlan says that the school was still open through-out the day, but they were encouraging parents to pick up their children if possible.

“Our School is open, but if parents want to come pick up

their children they can,” she says.

There were no reports of damage at the school other than a few leaks but nothing major.

All schools around the valley had the same idea about not closing but giving the parents the option of picking the stu-dents up if possible.

Hayley Lawrence from Wai-nuiomata High School says that the school left it up to the parents what they wanted

to do.“The students are safe here

so they can stay, but if parents want to pick up them that is up to them,”

Other shops from around the valley were suffering from the storm, with Dawn Bake Bakery having to get the Fire Brigade in to pump the water out of the back of the store.

Clives Chemist also had problems with leaks, towels were put out trying to soak up the water.

Flood waters didn’t stop Wainuiomata

When it comes to caring for our elders, medicine simply isn’t enough. We must look after their entire wellbeing, including social, emotional and cultural needs.

This is from Enliven’s Trish Shallard, who is the clinical coordinator at the popular Woburn Home in Lower Hutt.

Trish has worked at Woburn Home’s dementia care community, known as Wo-burn Court, for more than two years and says while her title is ‘clinical coordinator’ Enliven’s approach isn’t just focused on the clinical side of things.

“Clinical care certainly has its place, but at Woburn we focus much more on the personal side,” Trish explains.

Enliven’s homes, including Woburn Home, embrace a philosophy that is truly elder-directed. It recognises that people need to maintain control over their lives wherever they live and whatever their age.

“Our philosophy, known as the Eden Al-ternative, is so important because it fi ghts the feeling of loneliness, helplessness and boredom, which can be a major problem in most rest homes.”

But Eden uses 10 principles that encour-age things such as variety and spontaneity, companionship, contact with children and animals, continuing hobbies and meaning-ful activity.

“Meaningful activities include things like helping staff to set the tables for dinner, cooking and baking together then cleaning up, or making things that can be gifted to others. It’s about doing the little things that you’ve always done that makes life worthwhile for people.”

She says Eden truly makes a difference to the quality of life of elders.

“Eden makes a huge difference. Resi-dents interact more, they eat better, and you can tell that they’re truly happy,” Trish explains.

Trish says at Woburn Home staff also take part in the activities and spend one-on-one time with the residents.

“The staff love their jobs here because they can really connect with the residents and see what a difference they’re making in their lives,” says Trish.

“Eden proves that activities and social interaction is just as important as the medical side of things.” Woburn Home is operated by Enliven, part of the not-for-profi t organisation Presbyterian Support Central, and spe-cialises in rest home and dementia care. Woburn Home also off ers a popular a day programme for people living in the com-munity. For more information call 04 569 6400 or visit www.enlivencentral.org.nz.

More than medical

By Aaron Meredith

A group of University Students from The USA are spending the next few weeks in Wainuiomata as part of the Loveworks program.

The group is spending the next few weeks in the valley thanks to the Valley Church, which jumped at the opportunity to take the students.

The group has travelled from San Diego in California, and is here to do projects that help out the community.

On Monday they were at Fernlea School, and say that they were surprised how different the break times were in New Zealand than back home.

“It is so much fun here, the children are so much more open,” say the group of 12 students.

One major difference is the amount of teachers they saw on the playground.

“We only saw one teacher out here, back home there would be teachers all

over the place.”The group arrived in Wainuiomata late

on Friday evening, just missing out on the storms that hit the region, and are here until the 25th of the month.

Loveworks provides opportunities for University Students to travel over to other countries to experience different cultures and enviroments.

New Zealand has just happened to be the country that the students were sent to this time.

Originally the students were supposed to be sent to Auckland but Valley Church Pastor Matthew Lesniak is happy the plans changed.

“Plans for the team fell through in Auckland and our district asked if we could use the team down here in Wainui,” he says.

“We jumped on the opportunity and have been working hard to plan meaning-ful activities for them and our community since.”

LETTERS to the editor

A group of American Students have just arrived in New Zealand, so the Wainuiomata News decided to ask them...

Q: What is your fi rst impression of this country?

The clean up in Lower Hutt after last weeks storm and fl ooding is well underway.

All local roads were cleared and opened that night with the Riverbank Carpark opened for business as usual in the morning.

Most of the debris from the storm was been cleared from public access areas of the city with contractors continuing to work on clearing remaining mud, silt and other debris, particularly along the Hutt River Trail.

A huge number of storm-related calls were made to Council’s customer contact centre during the storm. Staff answered about 1,300 calls compared to the 400—500 calls they normally respond to.

Mayor Ray Wallace says yesterday’s fl ooding was a result of intense rainfall

combined with high tide during the peak of the deluge.

“With more than 96 millimetres of rain over a 24-hour period, and 48 millimetres falling between 11am and midday, it is understandable some of the city’s infrastructure couldn’t cope and we had fl ooding across the city.

“I have been impressed at how quickly our city has recovered and I want to thank Council staff and contractors for their hard work overnight to get us back on our feet.

“I also want to acknowledge the resil-ience of the people of Lower Hutt. There will be residents and business owners across the city busy cleaning up today and I urge them to contact Council if they have concerns about the effect of fl ood water."

Clean up over Hutt busy as well

Dear Ed, I was riding the bus home the other day, just after what would have been school time from Lower Hutt to Wainuiomata.

I was shocked to see how rude some of the people on the bus are not getting off their seat in a packed bus when it is full.

People never get off their seat when an elderly gets on the bus, it seems like once they get on the bus they are not giving up their seat for no one.

Why do some people act like this? What has happened to re-specting peoples elders? When

did that end?I think that we should all learn

to give up our seat if there is someone else that needs it more, especially if someone is old or in pain.

Sports with Aaron Meredith By Aaron Meredith

The Ulalei Netball teams both had losses in the weekend, but there was still plenty of positives in both games.

Ulalei One went down to Naenae Collegians United White by 76-30.

Even with the loss the team still sits inside the top four, with two games remaining in

this round of play.Ulalei Two also went down,

43-18 to Maidstone, but coach Toli Sagaga is tsill proud of her young squad.

"Despite the loss, we saw some exciting plays from the youngsters, Confi dence is defi -nitely growing in this young happy team," she says.

A standout performance by Preslee Hoare earnt her

player of the day with a strong game at goal defence with numerous tips, intercepts, two-handed rebounds and bringing the ball through on attack.

Next week both teams will be looking for victories as Ulalei Premier One play Maidstone at 11am Walter Nash Stadium.

Ulalei Premier Two play Manaroa at 12.30pm Walter Nash Stadium.

In Secondary School action Wainuiomata High School Junior A put in another strong performance to beat St Orans 24-9.

Wainuiomata High School was able to adjust to the blus-tery conditions executing a smart game plan.

Player of the day Cerie Mi-lovale played an excellent game at goal defence and wing defence picking up inter-cepts, tips, rebounds and was also strong on attack.

Coach Lahraine Sagaga is happy of the team’s start of the season.

"The team will continue to build on its' good start to the season."

Next week they play Sacred Heart at Taita College at 9am.

Ulalei still sit in top four despite loss

By Aaron Meredith

A solid all round performance has given the Wainuiomata Premiers a much needed vic-tory over the weekend.

Many of the clubs teams games were cancelled over the weekend, thanks to Thursday’s big storm, only three teams played on Saturday.

The Premiers were away at Haitaitai Park against Welling-ton, who have been performing well this year.

Wainuiomata did however put in a solid performance on the day scoring three tries on route to a 28-11 victory.

Three yellow cards by the Axemen did help the visitors cause however, but Wainuio-mata were strong and clinical enough to take advantage of this.

The half time score was 14-6 after early penalties were ex-changed before Teru Time crashed over the line for the fi rst try of the game.

These were followed up by a try to Fa’atau Mamea, as well as a penalty try, giving Wainuio-mata a 28-6 lead which would never be threatened.

The result keeps Wainuiomata just inside the top eight but they know they will need to keep winning if they hope to play Jubilee Cup rugby in the second round.

In the Harper Lock Shield, the Premier Reserves continued their up and down season by thrashing Wellington 62-29 and

Kilbirnie Park. The game was transferred to

Kilbirnie Park after originally being scheduled to also be at Haitaitai Park.

This result puts Wainuiomata in seventh on the table, with two games remaining.

The Wainuiomata women were the ones the most effected by Thursdays storm, with their home game against Old Boys University being transferred out of Wainuiomata.

The game was played at

Petone Rec and the team could not hold off OBU who pulled away in the second half to win 17-5.

This leaves them in sixth on the tightly contesteted table, although Wainuiomata have played less games than some of the other teams.

Next week the Premiers and Premier Reserves are playing in town again, against Poneke at Kilbirnie Park, the Premiers at 2.30, the Reserves at 12.45pm.

Bad weather didn’t stop Premiers from a much needed win

By Aaron Meredith

Wainuiomata’s Rugby League Club had a tough weekend, with three out of four mens senior teams going down.

The Premiers went down in a tight struggle to Te Aroha 14-10, Wainuiomata had the chance to steal it at the end but could not convert on the opportunities.

The result leaves them in fourth on the table.

The Reserves went down heavily 54-16 to Te Aroha, the

relut puts them in seventh on the table with 5 points.

In the Senior First Grade, the Indigenous Lions had the clubs only success of the weekend, winning their game by default over Kapiti Coast who could not make it down to Wainuiomata.

The Fitzroy Lions went down 34-20 to the Porirua City Phoe-nix, in what was a top of the table clash.

Fitzroy is now second on the table with eight points, Indigenous sits in fifth with four points.

Next week the Premiers travel to Cannons Creek Park to play St George at 2.30pm, the Reserves play the curtain raiser at 1pm against the same opposition.

The Fitzroy Lions are playing Randwick at Naenae Park,a nd the Indigenous Lions play the Porirua City Phoenix at Wise Park, both games are at 1pm.

The Women have the bye this week.

Disspointing Weekend of Rugby League

On May 30, we kick o another major Inter-national sporting even in our little country, the Fifa Under 20 world cup.And before you think it is just an age grade competition, this is huge, Fifa says it is the second biggest sporting event that they hold, behind the Men’s World Cup.That means that that this tournament is as big or bigger than the recent Cricket World Cup, it is much bigger than the Rugby World Cup back in 2011, whether we like to think so or not.24 teams from all over the world are travelling to our little country to battle it out to see which country is producing the best youth footballers, countries like Germany, Brazil and Argentina. We will see the unveiling of the next Football Superstar, another Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo or Wayne Rooney. For nearly three weeks, our country plays host to these players, another chance to show o our culture, another chance to show o our people.Fifa has a history of awarding us these types of events, the Under 17 Womens World Cup a few years ago is a great example. It Shows that a brand as large as Fifa knows we do a good job, they know we will get behind it, they know we will love it.Maybe we are too small for a full World Cup, maybe we can’t a ord it, but why should we complain when we are getting tournaments like this on a regular basis.Maybe one day we can host the big boys of football, maybe this is Fifa saying that one day, just maybe we will get to host our own full Fifa World Cup, now that would be a party and a half.
