Etching for Anzac Day

Wainuiomata Residents may have noticed something new on the War Memorial Community Hall entrance.

That is because there has been some etching placed in the windows, depicting one of each members of the military plac-ing a cross in the ground.

The etching was actually part of the windows that were originally on the hall, but they were broken over 20 years ago.

says that it looks great and really adds to the upgrade of the entire hall.

“It actually came from a coffee that I had with Bart Bartlett had at Bizzy Lizzy’s café, I then bought it up with council,” he says.

It is all part of the upgrades at the hall, which were moved forward because of the 100th

anniversary of the battle of Gal-lipoli.

“I asked council to move it forward due the anniversary, It looks great and I believe it is appropriate to have done this,” Mayor Wallace says.

Wainuiomata Valley RSA President Bart Bartlett agrees with Ray on the way it looks.

“It looks great, I am very pleased with it,” he says.

Anzac Day is on the Saturday, and there is plenty happening on the day.

This begins with the Dawn service at the Wainuiomata War Memorial Community Hall beginning at 6am.

This is followed by a fl ag cer-emony at the Memorial Gardens at the end of Hine Road, as soon as members of the RSA arrive at the gardens.

At 11am the Anzac parade takes place, starting from BP, going down Fitzherbert Road on to Queen Street and fi nishing at the War Memorial Community Hall, where another service takes place.

Everyone is encouraged to come down and pay respects to those who passed during the confl icts not just the fi rst world war.

Etching ready for Anzac Day

The drive to get Mila over to America for her surgery con-tinues, with the Wainuiomata Lions arranging a quiz night.

This is taking place at the Fitzroy Tavern on May 2, starting at 7pm.

Mila needs to go over to the United States for surgery that could change her life, as she suffers from cerebral palsy.

The Cerebral Palsy that Mila suffers from is called spastic quadriplegia, which means that when she gets excited or emotional, her body stiffens

up so she cannot move.This even affects her ability

to eat, her mother Melanie Gardiner says that when she likes the taste of something her tongue stiffens up so she spits out the food.

Having the life changing surgery will change Mila’s life, and be able to explore without disabilities getting in the way. First prize is to be dined by Wainuiomata’s own My Kitchen Rules contest-ants Dai Phonevilay and Dal Philavong.

Sarah Nuku from the Lions bought the idea to the group as

one of her friends was running a auction page to raise money for Mila.

“Come on down and have a great time, There is a fantastic fi rst prize, as well as their be-ing silent auctions happening through the night,” Sarah says.

The Wainuiomata Marae held a special type of Hui on Monday night, all about safety and how to help prevent crimes

The meeting was organised by Kaye-Maree Dunn, who after a recent break in joined the Neighbourhood Support.

She then saw how many crimes had taken place and decided to have the Hui to talk about the issues and hear from police, Hutt City Council and other stakeholders.

The aim was to also develop

a co-ordinated community led approach to help make Wai-nuiomata a safer and more resilient community.

“I cope with things in a weird way, and after the burglary I introduced myself to every neighbour on my street,” Kaye-Maree says.

The Police were represented by Sergeant Bradley Allen who says that the crime rate in Wainuiomata is actually quite low.

“You are more likely to get burgled in Petone than you are here in Wainuiomata,” he says.

He also says that people must report crimes if they see them happening.

He explained the work that the police were doing in the valley to stop not only crime, but also to prevent speeding and tagging.

“We found out that there was speeding on Wellington Road, and when we checked why we found that there was no speed limit signs,” he says.

“Speeding has dropped down there since we have put the signs up, dishing out speeding tickets wouldn’t work, this is

spoke at the meeting and says that he is proud of Wainuio-mata and the spirit that Wai-nuiomata has.

“I feel safe walking down the road in Wainuiomata, but we can always find ways to improve,” he says.

One of Mayor Wallace’s main gripes is against the tagging in the valley and often reports the tagging.

“The group that we report to got sick of me reporting tagging every week,” he says.

All around the country, including in Wai-nuiomata, people have been knitting poppies to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the ANZAC’s.

A group in Wainuiomata has been knitting poppies which have been displayed in the Wainuiomata Public Library lately.

“It’s great to see these poppies here, it is a real good way to show our support for the ANZAC’s,” says one library visitor Kim Hellens.

“They all look great as well, it is a great intiative.”

The initiative was started by the National Army Museum in Waiouru, who asked for a nationwide tribute for every New Zealander who died during WWI.

A large amount of these poppies have also come from Arohata Prison where prisoners knitted 280 poppies towards the project.

All the wool for every project was donated by communities around the country, so eve-ryone has contributed in some way towards the project.

The Wainuiomata Community Centre is looking for volunteers to help out with their Whanau in Arms service.

Whanau in Arms helps out those that are struggling to get food, whether they are on a budget or just can’t aff ord food that week.

This happens every Tuesday and is open to all those who need it.

Kokiri Marae is holding a program that is helping Whanau cope with cancer called Kia Ora – E te iwi.

The free program is out there to help people learn how to talk about common concerns in a safe setting.

It is for people going through cancer or the family and friends that are helping those going through it.

This happens fortnightly on a Tues-day and is run by trained people.

Hutt City Libraries are running workshops so people can discover about anyone they know that’s served in the First World War.

This is happening at the Wai-nuiomata Public Library on Tuesday April 28 at 10.30am, and booking is essential.

The hands on workshops are also running at other libraries in the region if you fail to get into the Wainuiomata workshops.

The School holidays fi nished off with a bang on Friday as Ronald McDonald came to

town with his show McD TV.McD TV was a fictional

show that broadcasted live to McDonaldland, and involved the children in a variety of

ways.One parent Megan Dawson

says that it was great to see this is the mall in the holidays.

“It is a great way to fi nish off

the last two weeks, it’s been a bit quite round here and the weather hasn’t helped,” she says.

“My children are enjoying it as well, and Ronald Mc-Donald is such a well-known brand as well.”

The turnout was great, with a lot of people finding out about the event thanks to facebook.

“I found out because a friend made me aware of it online, I thought it would be fun for the children to come and see,” she says.

The show included many other McDonalds characters including the Hamburgler who was controlling the mu-sic.

There was also Grimace who was the weatherman, and Birdie the Early Bird who showed Ronald how to pack a bag for camping.

These school holidays, local children will be able to learn all there is to know about their favourite Easter animals at the FREE School Holiday Sessions at Animates.

The ‘All About Easter Ani-mals’ learning session were held over the school holidays on both weeks and everyone had a blast.

“To kick off our fi rst free school holiday session this

year, we had an Easter themed workshop so that children could learn all about their favourite Easter ani-mals from rabbits to guinea pigs and chickens from our experts in-store,” says Matt James, Store Manager at Animates Kaiwharawhara.

The sessions were a great way for kids to pick up important life skills, such as promoting kindness and

compassion towards all ani-mals.

“Animates has everything for pets and our school holi-day sessions are a great way of introducing children to all the skills they need to become nurturing and loving owners for life,” says Matt James.

“For each school holiday period throughout the year, we focus on learning about

different types of animals. Each child that attends will receive a certifi cate of com-pletion which they will be able to take home and pop on their wall with pride.”

Guided Water WalksOn the Day after Anzac Day, there is a

chance to see some of the hidden secrets in Wainuiomata.

There will be a Guided Water Walk at the Wainuiomata Recreation Area, which takes you to places you would not usually be allowed to go.

Stops along the way include seeing the Orongorongo Pipeline Tunnell and the Historic Morton Dam, all within luch native forest.

Once again the Wainuiomata Library came to the rescue to break some holiday boredom this week.

This week children got to learn about Greek Myths and Legends, form one of the Wainuiomata Staff members.

Children learned about all about

ancient Greek monsters and legends, as well as making their own masks.

This followed up last week’s learning’s about Maori myths and legends, which is all part of Hutt City libraries events over the holidays.

Events were taking place at every library on different days, providing children with the

chance to have fun and learn at the same time.

Once again stories were read to the children, giving them the chance to hear about the ancient Greek gods and their adventures.

Everyone had a great time there and all enjoyed learning about some of the great legends that have been around since the dawn of humanity.

For those in Wainuiomata that have recently recovered from Breast Cancer there is a group in Wellington organised to help you out.

Next Steps is a new fully funded programme for women who are recovering from breast cancer.

The principle funder is the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation.

The programme recognises that cancer treatments can commonly cause some negative impacts on a womans quality of life and that this struggle can continue once treatments have fi nished.

Research shows being physi-cally active is a strong com-ponent in your recovery from breast cancer and the effects of its treatment including fatigue. it can provide an opportunity to motivate and achieve goals previously not considered.

The programme runs for one hour per week for ten weeks. It is delivered by a PINC Cancer Rehabilitation Physiotherapist

and each class combines the very best pilates, yoga and cardio exercises for improving your health and fi tness.

This programme is rolling out as a Pilot study throughout the country with Habit Physi-otherapy being the only Wel-lington provider.

A maximum of ten women who have been affected by breast cancer will be in the class.

It is suitable for any level of fi tness as the periods of exercise and rest are adapted as fi tness, strength and stamina improve.

Each session fi nishes with a yoga relaxation sequence to restore a sense of calm and con-fi dence and includes an oppor-tunity to refl ect on your journey and be inspired by your progress.

Wainuiomata will be treated to its own art show this week-end, when local artist Sarah Kennedy displays her works.

She is putting her sculptures on show that she has made over the last few years of her degree

at Massey University.This is taking place on Satur-

day between 11am and 3.30pm, at the Te Kaupapa Training Centre just down from Parkway Park, and will be sign posted well.

The exhibition is also a free.“The More the Merrier,” Sarah

says.“I want as many people down

to have a look.”The name of the exhibition is

the Barkyard Series, as all her sculptures are made from bark from Pine Trees.

The trees are situated on a Moores Valley farm, the same

place she gets a lot of her in-spiration of the work she does from.

“I get all my inspiration from that farm, it is all about the feeling I get when I am down there,” she says.

“It is a big series of my old works from over a couple of

years, and some new ones as well.”

Sarah is in the fourth year of her art degree at University and this show is an essential part of her passing the course.

So if you have a few minutes free, pop down to parkway and have a look at some of this work.

Dear Ed, Thank You to all the people who rallied to my aid when attacked in Wainuio-mata Shopping Centre on Thursday April 16.

It all happened so quickly but the attacker was moved away from me and people were gathered around me, checking on my wellbeing.

I was escorted to safety, and thankfully didn’t suffer a head injury.

Police and Ambulance were called and I was treated with courtesy and professionalism.

It’s when something like this happens that the best comes out in everyone.

Last Friday Taita came alive in a Mini WOMAD of sorts.

Refugees from Burma, Thailand, Africa, and Columbia are mixing with local Samoan, Maori and Pakeha kids - sharing the common language of music.

While they love playing Maori, African, and American music, Mozart and Beethoven are now in their com-fort zone too, thanks to Sistema Hutt Valley. Think of it as a mini WOMAD in Taita.

The kids are celebrating a week of dedicated work. The joy that builds across the week in the Arohanui Strings-Sistema Hutt Valley holiday programme shows why public pro-grammes can make a big difference

Eldredge, is ably assisted by musicians from Orchestra Wellington. Eldredge set up the music lessons in Taita fi ve years ago.

"Beethoven, Mozart, Maori, African and American music rung out in the classic Kiwi Pomare School Hall," Eldredge says.

"It's going to be our best concert yet and it would be an honour to see you in the audience on Friday!"

Dear Ed, I can’t believe that we had a mayor, little old Wainuiomata had a mayor, well I guess we are not that little.

Reading the article last week made me think, why did we not have a mayor for longer, surely a population as big as ours would have been enough.

What was achieved by Mr Martin during his time in the valley is a credit to him, it sounds like he was involved

in nearly everything that we now take for granted here.

The Pools, the Hill Road, without Mr Martin we would not have these here.

So I am saying Well done to Harry and Irene Martin on 68 years of marriage, people as good as you two deserve a long and happy marriage.

Not so little after all

Dear Ed, Reading your public Opinion I was really impressed about what peo-ple in our community felt about Anzac Day and the ANZAC’s.

The answers I think summed up what most if not all of us are thinking, without them I don’t believe our country would be the way it is, we should pay our respects.

I do think that we should all remem-ber that War is not the answer to any problems in the world, both WW1 and WW2 show this.

There are only losers in war, even those who were written as winners in the history books were losers, family’s lost fathers, brothers, sons, and people never came home.

Those that did come home were never the same ever again, they all sacrifi ced a lot for us all, for our country.

Anzac Day is the one day we remember those who lost their lives for our country, they deserve it, we will remember them.

The Hutt City Council is looking for the communities input on what should be ap-proved for the long term plan.

The council wants to know what projects that people in the community support, and Councillor Campbell Barry is encouraging people to have their say.

"I really encourage everyone to make a submission on our Long Term Plan, It's this plan which will set the direction

for Council over the next 10 years," he says.

Projects in Wainuiomata include the construction of the viewing platform at the top of the Wainuiomata Hill, and progressing Wainuiomata Sportsville.

The cost of the platform will be $200,000 and the cost of Sportsville will be $100,000.

Other projects in the LTP include a regional bowls cen-tre in Naenae, progressing Petone Sportsville, and the construction of the Eastern

Bays shared path."The proposed viewing

platform at the top of the Wainuiomata Hill and support for Sportsville to develop plans around a sports hub are two new projects in particu-larly that we would like to hear your feedback on," says Councillor Barry.

"It's also a good opportunity to let us know if you think we've missed anything out."

Submissions close on Sat-urday May 30 at 5pm, and forms can be picked up from

the Library or found online at huttcity.govt.nz/ltp.

The booklet with the sub-missions in it, provides a lot of information about the long term plan, and updates on projects that are currently taking place.

Out of the population of 200 that were living in Wainuiomata at the time World War One started, 10 percent of those lost their lives.

The stories of the 20 men that lost their lives are being shown in the Wainuiomata Mall at the moment.

All the information has been provided by the Wainuiomata Historical Soci-ety, who have kindly let the Shopping Centre borrow the War Stories to display for the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC’s.

The small number has allowed the museum to display the individual stories of the men, who they were and what happened to them during the Great War.

The display is located in the windows next to A1 Sushi in the mall, and makes a very interesting read.

The display will be in the mall for the next week or so, afterwards it will be relocated to the Wainuiomata Museum, located at Wainuiomata Primary School.

This is all part of the 100 year anni-versary of the battle of Gallipoli, where many New Zealand and Australian lives were lost in the battle for freedom.

The display gives a locals a chance to learn about some of our own that served during this time.

National List MP based in the Hutt Valley, Chris Bishop, has welcomed the announcement by the Prime Minister that Budget 2015 will include another $80 million over four years to encourage more private sector research and devel-opment through Callaghan Innovation, based in the Hutt.

“This funding is equivalent to a 14 per cent increase in Callaghan Innovation’s R&D co-funding budget, and is in addi-tion to the $566m committed over four years for R&D grants in Budget 2013,” he says

“This new funding presents a big oppor-tunity for companies in the Hutt Valley.”

Over 3,900 people across more than 825 Lower Hutt businesses are employed full-time in the high-tech sector, and the

sector generates $473 million in GDP already. Lower Hutt has the fourth largest number of people in NZ employed in medium high-tech manufacturing.

Mr Bishop says the new funding is a big boost for the concept of “Technol-ogy Valley’ where science, technology and high value manufacturing drive economic growth, new jobs and higher wages for Hutt residents

Through the Business Growth Agenda, the National-led government is backing the Hutt’s science and technology focus, through programmes such as Record investments in science and innovation.

Other examples also include New Tax rules to encourage research, supporting the new engineering school at WelTec and funding a new ICT Graduate School.

King of the Hill is returning to Wainuiomata at the end of next month, and organisers are expect-ing another great turnout.

The date has been set for May 31, with the starting gun firing at 9am, the race begins at Queen Street reserve right in the middle of Wainuiomata.

Last year over 300 competitors took part, including competitive runners and walkers, families with pushchairs and also people dressed up as Kings and Queens and even Spongebob Squarepants.

The course has changed slightly from what it was last year, but still will go through the centre of Wainuiomata before heading up

the top of the Wainuiomata Hill and back.

Last year runners went straight up Wainuiomata Road, this year they will be going up Fitzherbert Road, on to the Parkway Extension and round to the hill before heading up the 2km rise.

Because the road is sealed and wide it is completely safe to do and is a great event for a family day out.

There are plenty of spot prizes to be won, as well as special prizes for the best costumes, there are also cash prizes for fi rst male and female to arrive at the fi nish line.

People have a few options to register if they want, online at kingofthehill.co.nz, at the Wai-nuiomata Community Library or at the I-Site in Lower Hutt.

King of the Hill Returns THUMBS UP: A competitor from last year sits on the throne at the top of the Wainuiomata hill.

Wainuiomata Harriers opened its racing season with the Wayne Tucker Memorial Races last Saturday.

These races, which are held each year in the memory of one of the clubs past members, are held at the Rimutaka Forest Park.

Even though it has been a little cool and wet, racing conditions were pretty good.

The event got underway, taking in the picturesque Catchpool Loop track and the challenging Nature Trail.

The men ran 8km while the women ran 6km, juniors and walkers completed 4km and the younger children ran 2km.

There was a close fi nish in the women’s 6km race with Georgina Cox just taking out Nikki Braniff-Jones by 3 seconds at the line.

There was also a great sprint fi nish between two of our junior boys fi nishing in a near dead-heat for 3rd and 4th place.

Results included Jeff Culver winning the mens in a time of 33 minutes and 33 seconds, he beat Paul Richardson in second and Waricke Petigrew in third.

Georgina Cox was victorious in the womens race with a time of 32 minutes and two seconds,

in second was Nikki Branniff-Jones and Maree Carman.

The Walking race was won by Brendon Mc-Cauley who had a time of 33 minutes and 45 seconds, he beat out Karen Forsyth and Karen McNatty.

The Junior women was a close race with only fi ve seconds separating winner Natsha Goldsworthy from second place Grace Forsyth.

In the Junior Girls race Rebekah Forsyth came fi rst with a time of 12 minutes and four seconds, the other top fi nishers were MacKenzie Winter in second and Heidi Carman in third.

In the Junior Boys Race Cameron Forsyth was fi rst by over a minute ahead of Jesse Carman and Daniel McNatty.

This Saturday is the fi rst interclub relay.Saturday May 2 will be the next club run from

Harriers open racing season

Keeping the 24 paddlers, coach and manager afl oat is a serious business for the women of Wellington's CanSurvive dragon boat team.

They need to raise over $30,000 each year to enable the team to train on Wellington harbour and compete around New Zealand.

Their most successful annual fundraiser is about to open at the corner of Jackson and Britannia Streets, Petone on April 29.

This annual pop-up shop opens for a week, recycling a huge variety of quality, pre-loved clothing gathering much needed funds for the team.

These help to pay for the use of dragon boats, safety boat hire, equipment and travel costs.

These breast cancer survivors harness their positive attitude and team spirit to organise many fundraising to meet their costs.

Working shifts in the temporary store gives the women a chance to connect with the local community, and spread the word about the benefi ts of the sport to those affected by breast cancer.

The pop-up shop has a special launch night planned for those wanting the best pre-opening bargains. Tickets can be obtained by emailing [email protected].

CanSurvive’s success has earned them

another haul of bronze and silver medals at local, regional national and international level this past year. Their results refl ect the positive things which can be achieved when tough challenges are met in the spirit of team work which focuses on physical well-being.

The team will soon be back on the water twice a week, having purchased their own safety boat and built their own ten-person boat, so they can continue to train through the winter.

The origins of Anzac Day go back to when the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, alongside their Australian and Commonwealth comrades, stormed the beaches of the Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915.

100 years later and this year, like every other, we remember those who sacrifi ced their lives for this country during that long and deadly campaign.

Anzac Day is New Zealand and Aus-tralia’s national day of remembrance for all of those from the two nations who served and died in all wars, confl icts and peacekeeping operations.

More than 100,000 New Zealand troops and nurses served their country in World War One. The population of

the country at the time was a little more than one million.

41,317 New Zealanders were wounded during the war and 16,697 were killed.

About 1,000 additional men died within fi ve years of the war ending and more than 500 died while training for war, within New Zealand between 1914 and 1918.

The New Zealand Defence Force says there are currently 468 of their personnel deployed on 11 operations and United Nations missions across twelve countries.

In May this year 143 New Zealand military trainers will head to Iraq to assist in training the Iraqi army for their on-going fi ght against Isis.

One Issue that has come up in the World of sport lately is the issue of Concussion.This is a bigger issue than eve-ryone is making it out to be, it is not about winning a game of sport, it is about a person’s health.Chiefs Prop Ben Afeaki recently retired due to him not recover-ing from concussion, I believe this was a smart move.We all have had head knocks in our life, that is part of growing up, yes, but what we never take into consideration is what dam-age it is doing inside your head.That feeling of being confused, that headache that won’t go away, dizziness, constantly being tired, what do you guys think is causing that?What we all need to address is there is a notion from fans and coaches alike that Rugby players, League Players, or any other sports person should just work through this.That is wrong, no one should ever put the health of someone behind a result on the � eld.

I think it is our responsibil-ity as fans to make sure we understand that if someone has been knocked out on the � eld, we don’t expect them to harden up.Hardening up is the last thing we should expect anyone to do, a life time of mental health issues is not a price to pay for winning a game of Rugby.Coaches must understand this as well, and this is right from the top to the bottom, remember the result is not worth some-one’s life.An example of what Brain Dam-age can do is former profes-sional wrestler Chris Benoit, his brain was so mushed after taking so many head knocks over his career he went psycho.He killed his family and then committed suicide, we do not want another case like this.Rugby is a great game, it is fun to play, it is fun to watch, we need to � nd a way to make sure we are putting peoples health � rst, especially when it comes to the mental side of things.

Concussion, not a joking matter

Wainui faced MSP at Martin Luckie Park, after a loss the week before Wainui had learnt a lot. Wainui went into the game against MSP with a bit of hope.

Unfortunately Wainui didnt bank on a whistle happy ref.

MSP opened the scoring with a well worked try, only for wainui to get back into a game with a good try themselves, with the ball being worked down the left hand sideline for Anaru Waihape to open the scor-ing for Wainui.

MSP scored another try late in the half, with both teams competing well against each other.

Wainui had other scoring plays which wouldve been converted into points had it not been for the ref

blowing them off the fi eld.MSP went in the half time break

5 - 12 a head.The scores where locked like that

for much of the second half until MSP broke free to score their 3rd try of the game and continued to get 4 tries for the game.

Wainui scored a late try to hooker Jordan Leuluai who had a strong game after coming off the bench.

Wainui eventually went down 12 - 27.

With Old timers day coming up this ANZAC day Wainui will be hoping for a huge turn out in support to get their season kick started in to life.

With injuries slowly starting to recover Wainui are looking forward to a home game this weekend against Petone at 1pm.

The game is at Mary Crowther Park.

Junior Golfers from around the region competed at a tournament at the Wai-nuiomata Golf Club on Thursday, and the weather helped make it a complete success.

They competed in the Bill Purcell tournament which is an annual tourna-ment the club has been running since about 1995.

The competitors were aged between eight and eighteen, and all had handi-caps of between three and 39.

Winners on the day included Ryan Fahey, who won the Prew Trophy for best Stableford score by a Wainuiomata player.

Ryan has been playing golf for about fi ve or six years, and has a handicap of 3.1.

“My Dad and family got me into playing golf,” he says.

Riley King won the best overall, win-ning the Bill Purcell Trophy.

Committee member Shirley Hay says the tournament was a great success, and it is great to see so many take part.

Shirley is one of the many club mem-bers that live in Lower Hutt but choses to play in Wainuiomata.

“It is such a lovely course, it is peace-ful and it is great to come over and play here,” she says.

Shirley says that she enjoys watching the junior tournament as the junior golfers are really talented.

Junior Golfers shine

The Wainuiomata Football Club had reason to celebrate this weekend, with the top team destroying Upper Hutt City over the Weekend.

The game was played at Richard Prouse Park, and the home fans had plenty to cheer about with the team winning 14-0.

The result puts them in second on the table on seven points after three games.

In Capital Four the result was not so posi-tive, with the team going down to Brooklyn Northern United 4-0 at Wakefi eld Park.

The team are sitting in eighth place on the ladder with three points after three games.

The Womens side held on to defeat Naenae 2-1 at Richard Prouse Park, leaving them in second place with four points after two games.

In other games Wainuiomata Halfbaked lost to Wellington Olympic 5-0, and the Round-balls lost to Porirua City 2-0.

Next week the Capital two team is playing Island Bay United at 2.30pm, the game is at Richard Prouse Park

The Capital four team is at home against Kapiti Coast United at 1pm at Richard Prouse Park,

The Women are also playing Kapiti Coast United at Richard Prouse Park on Sunday at 1.00pm

Footballers have successful weekend

The Ulalei Netball Club had a win and a loss over the weekend, The Premiers defeating the Up-per Hutt Rams by 65-52, and the Premier 2 team going down 27-37 to St Orans.

Coach Ressa Lealofi says that she was pleased with how the team continued their form from the week prior.

“The defence was amaz-ing, Nicol Du Toit in particular, The opposition struggled to get the ball to their shooter because Nicol

would contest almost everything that came her way,” she says.

“Our mid-courters executed what we learnt in training and gave the shooters plenty of options.”

She also gave a shout out to Irma Anae, who stepped up well from the week prior.

“Our shooters, Emma Wyma and Sina Tamaalii as always are a beast in that shooting circle. As a team, we improved immensely on bringing the ball down the court and on our fi tness."

Unfortunately the win came at a cost, with a season ending injury

to goal shoot Tamaalii, putting a damper on the result.

The Premier two team played well in patches but Coach Toli Sagaga says that inexperience was what let them down.

“This young team will learn from this experience as the players develop their skills and settle into their combinations,” she says.

"This is a young developing team that is showing a lot of potential."

There are no games next week due to Anzac Day taking place on Saturday, both teams return to ac-tion the following week however.

A win and a loss for Ulalei

The Wainuiomata Rugby League Premiers ran away comfortable winners over the weekend in their second game of the year.

After suffering a heartbreak-ing 22-20 loss to Randwick in week one, the Premiers turned it around defeating the University Hunters 36-24 at Kelburn Park.

The result lifts the Premiers up to fourth on the table after the second game of the season.

The Premier Reserves had an exciting 32-32 draw against the same opposition in the curtain raiser to the Premiers game.

This result means the team is sitting in third on the table after the second game, with three points.

In the senior fi rst comple-tion, there were mixed results for the two Wainuiomata teams in the grade.

The Fitzroy Lions defeated the Randwick Kingfi shers by 30-20 at Wise Park.

The Indigenous Lions how-ever had a loss, going down 22-34 to a tough Porirua City Pheonix side at Wise Park.

The results mean the Fitzroy Lions are in third and the Indigenous Lions are in sixth, although it was only the fi rst game of the year.

The Wainuiomata Womens Lions had a bye in the fi rst round of their season.

Next Week the Premiers are at home for the fi rst time this year against the Petone Panthers at 2.30pm.

The Premier Reserves are playing the Trentham Titans at pm also at Wise Park.

Both senior 1st teams are playing at Wise Park this weekend, The Fitzroy Lions are fi rst up at 1pm against the Kapiti Coast Bears.

This is followed by the In-digenous Lions playing the University Hunters at 2.30pm.

All games are on Saturday except the Women who are playing on Sunday against the Titahi Bay Marlins, at Wise Park beginning at 1pm.

League Club Open DayAlong with the action on the fi eld, the Wainuio-mata Rugby League Club will be having plenty of action off it as well.This week sees the club having its Open Day, and there is plenty of activities for you to enjoy.There will be a lolly Scramble for the Kids, and the BBQ will be cranking all day as well.There will be a Social Night at the Club afterwards as well, with entertainment provided by DJ Swift.

Hockey ResultsThe Wainuiomata Hockey Club had another big win over the weekend.They defeated Karori 10-1 over the weekend to progress into the fi nal of their grade.The game will be against Upper Hutt at Maidstone Park.Wainuiomata has already defeated Upper Hutt this year so will be hopeful to win again and be promoted to the top grade.

The Wainuiomata Rugby Club had a disappointing weekend in the latest round of club rugby, with only one team claiming victory.

That team was the 80/80s’s who defeated Paremata Plimmerton 20-18 at Wil-liam Jones Park, the only team to play at home this last week.

The Premiers went down 22-16 to Marist st Pats at Evans Bay Park, while the Premier Reserves went down to the same club 29-24 at Martin Luckie Park.

The women also had a dis-appointing 60-0 loss to last year’s champions Oriental Rongotai at Polo Grounds.

Poor discipline cost the premiers who trailed for most of the game, being behind 12-10 at half time before the home team took off early in the second half to lead 22-10.

Two penalties were enough to get Wainuiomata a bonus point on the table, which could be vital at the end of the Swindale Shield.

This leaves them in sixth place on the table, with 14 points after fi ve games
