Continued from page 1This holiday programme was

organised and run by the volunteers from the community centre, who all decided that they needed to do something for the children after the last holidays they had very little.

Also volunteers from the Wai-nuiomata Maori Wardens provided help with looking after the children, and aided with added security.

The Children who took part in the programme all enjoyed the week thoroughly, saying that they would come back again in the next holidays.

There was a wide range of ages between the children, but that didn’t stop the children from get-ting along with each other.

Volunteers say that it was a lot of hard work involved, but they were very satisfi ed with how the week went.

“We were a bit unorganized in some areas, but it all went pretty well,” says one volunteer.

The programme was supported

by businesses and groups from around the community, includ-ing Kokiri Marae, who ran the cooking and gardening day, and NZ Kids food who provided all the lunches for the children.

“NZ kids food pro-vided the lunch at a cheaper rate for the programme, we ap-preciate that a lot.”

Holiday Programme a load of fun

By Aaron Meredith

The Pencarrow Lions are calling on all former mem-bers to come and celebrate their 30th anniversary.

The club has been trying to contact as many former members as possible to come to the celebrations but are not sure they have found them all.

“It is a very special event

for us,” says member Sue Smith.

The event is taking place at the Wainuiomata Bowling Club this Saturday, and the club is hoping that as many current and former members as possible are there.

Over the past 30 years the club has helped many groups from all around the community keep running including the Wainuiomata

Community Patrol.“We help the members of

the community that need our help,” Sue says.

“And it is also a good place to meet people.”

The club is actively looking for members, as like many clubs around the country it has experienced a decline in members.

From having around 50 just three years ago, the numbers

have slipped down to around 20.

The problem that many clubs are facing is the fact that people are working when club meetings are on and do not have the time to go to any other activities.

If anyone is interested in joining the club or are a former member that is want-ing to attend this weekend, please contact the club.

Yekta Reddy a year 9 student from Wainuiomata will be performing with the Mudra Dance Company for the fi rst time in the upcoming exciting new production of Samarpana – An offering through dance.

This celebration of 25 years of performance by Mudra Dance Company - Samar-pana will be a kaleidoscope of motion, colour, music, mime and rhythm.

Characterized by exotic beauty and charm, Mudra Dance Company is a visual feast of brilliant sari colours, traditional headdresses of braids and fl owers, and the sparkle of jewellery.

Yekta who is 13 years old travels into Wellington three to four times a week to practise and learn Bharata-Natyam

She has been learning for 9 years and is looking forward to performing in a major production for the fi rst time.

“I feel the sweat and travel is worth it especially when people come up to you and say you were so good,” she says.

“Every dance has a mean-ing and the dances are about

Indian mythology and culture and I know I have learnt a lot about my culture whilst performing and learning”

This year sees the Mudra Dance Company dance out from under the shadows of their creator and visionary Vivek Kinra, who after a long and inspirational dance career will not be performing along-side his beautiful dancers.

“As I take on new chal-lenges and directions in life I retire from performing with reverence and gratitude for the magic of the ancient Indian art form of Bharata-Natyam,” Vivek says.

“It’s not the end it’s just the beginning and I am sure the audience will be delighted by the performances of the Mudra Dance Company in this performance and into the future.”

Mudra Dance Company will perform at the Whitireia Theatre in Wellington com-mencing 31 July.

Their performances are aimed to excite the audience with fast moving thematic dance pieces that will show-case the incredible talent of this dance company.

The Wainuiomata Community Patrol had another successful fundraising drive, raising some much needed money for the service.

The Patrol teamed up with Expressions Hairstylists on Wainuiomata Road, who gave haircuts for gold coin donations, as well as the patrol running a sausage sizzle.

Patrol member Paul Knox was extremely pleased with the amount of support the fundraiser got.

“The ladies were busy nonstop from 10 until the doors shut at 3pm, there were at least 150 cus-tomers who got cuts and beauty treatments, the counting stopped as the queue grew,” he says.

“The Community Patrol re-ceived over $800 from the day and we are extremely grateful to

Kirsty Craig, Cushla Dowman, Allison Humphrey, Nichola Andre, Alanah Earnshaw and Kirsty Patmore for donating their time and talents to us on the day.”

The team is already planning next year’s give back day as they all enjoyed it so much.

The fundraising is continuing this month, with the patrol gain-ing funds from the Karma Keg at Queen of Jackson in Petone on

Thursday July 30.“We have also gained more

sponsors over the past week or so. We have added Expres-sions Hair Design and Wainui Landscape and Lumber to our list,” says Paul.

“Clive's the Happy Chemist, The Fitzroy Tavern, Wainui Joinery, Wellington Pipelines. Firestone Wainuiomata and Dominos are also great support-ers of the patrol.”

Patrol fundraiser a total success

Wainuiomata has many schools around the valley, six primary schools and one Intermediate and High School.

Looking back there were many schools though, at the peak of the population boom, there were two intermediates, two colleges and nine primary schools.

In 2000 many schools merged in the valley however, this was due to a number of factors including role numbers and funding.

The oldest school in Wainuiomata is Wainuiomata Primary School, the

school opened way back in 1857, and has remained on the same site since.

When the Wainuiomata schools merged, this school was combined with Wood Hatton Primary School, which was struggling for numbers at the time.

Other primary schools that merged were Parkway and Sun Valley to form Konini Primary School at the old Parkway site.

On the old Glendale site, Pencarrow merged with Glendale to form Pukea-tua, and St Patricks merged with St Matthews to form St Claudines Thevenet on the old St Patricks site.

The two schools that did remain

untouched were Arakura and Fernlea, the latter was originally planned to be merged into Konini but the school fought this saying they were the only school on their side of Wainuiomata Road, and then won the right to stay open.

It was where the new secondary school was to be situated was where the real drama took place however.

The original plan was to put the school where the old Wainuiomata College was situated, as this was seen as a more central site.

The staff and pupils at Parkway College fought this, with a few pro-tests taking place including a march

down Parkway extension to bring the school to Parkway, a battle they would eventually win.

The Intermediate site was then chosen to be at the old Parkway Intermediate site as it was decided the two schools needed to be next to each other.

Since this time many students have gone through these schools, and the quality of education has grown tomuch higher levels than before.

The school mergers at the time caused a lot of anger and disagree-ment in the valley, but no one can deny that it hasn’t worked out for the better for Wainuiomata.

Darts players from all around the country converged on the Fitzroy Tavern last week to compete in the New Zealand Darts Council Junior and Youth Championships.

The three day event included 23 Wainuiomata Junior players, who all competed extremely well, and made their club proud.

The tournament was opened by Councillor Campbell Barry, and then it was nonstop darts from then on in, as the future Michael Van Gerwin’s, Phil Taylor’s and Gary Anderson’s squared off to see who the top darts players were.

Many members of the public were down viewing the tournament, saying that they can understand why it is such a popular sport now.

“It is simple to follow, you don’t have too many rules to think of, plus it is a sport in a bar which is great,” says Peter Johnson.

“It’s making me want to give it a go one day.”

Darts has grown in popularity over recent years after Sky Sports has started showing Darts tournaments.

Names like ‘Mighty’ Michael Van Gerwin, Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and Raymond “Barney’ Van Barneveld have become household names around the world now.

Wainuiomata Youth and Junior Darts Club convenor Jeanne Silcock says that the tournament was a great success.

“A lot of people doubted us when we were given the hosting rights but they all agree now that it was a great venue and well run and everyone had a fantastic time,” she says.

“We will certainly put in another bid to host in the future.”

Wainuiomata did extremely well with Katie Smith & Katie Easthope winning silver in the Junior Girls Pairs Consolation, Ben Herman & Aidan Rameka won bronze in the

LETTERS to the editor

Reading your edition of the Wainuio-mata News last week, I was pleased to read about Youth Inspire and what they are doing for our young people.

There are too many youth around Wainuiomata and New Zealand that are unemployed, looking for work and struggling.

I agree with what they say in the

article, how can you get experience without anyone being willing to give experience.

I cannot think how hard it is to break into the workforce these days, there are hundreds of applicants for single jobs.

The world is not what it was like back when I was fi rst out of school, I walked

into my fi rst job, these children un-fortunately do not have that privilege.

What a great initiative Youth Inspire is, and I wish all the children that have signed up for the programme all the best of luck.

To improve safety across the city, Hutt City Council is set to roll out wearable video cameras for frontline regulatory offi cers from this week.

The new cameras will be worn by all Council parking wardens and animal control offi cers, to deter aggression and allow staff to safely do their jobs. The cameras will be worn on the outside of offi cers’ uniforms and will be ac-companied by a visual ID tag carrying a warning that a camera is being worn. Offi cers will have the ability to turn on the device in potential situations of conflict. The cameras will only record footage when manually turned on by officers, and people will be verbally advised that the camera is on. General Manager, Governance and Reg-ulatory, Joycelyn Raffi lls, says that the cameras are about improving safety for both Council staff and the community. “The experience of other councils

and regulatory agencies shows that wearable cameras have a di-rect effect on negative behaviour. “Research shows that when cam-eras are worn, fewer confl icts esca-late and conflict situations are less likely to turn aggressive, which gives confi dence to staff and the public.” Council has done extensive research into the use of similar devices in New Zealand and overseas, and has taken all necessary steps to adhere to Privacy Commissioner guidelines. These guidelines include making the public aware that cameras are being used, collecting only nec-essary images, and having a clear policy on how the images will be handled, stored and disposed of. Any footage captured is only accessible by authorised personnel and decisions around the retention of footage will be made within 48 hours of collection.

The cost of upgrading Lower Hutt’s Town Hall and Events Centre has increased by as much as $2.9 million.

The price hike was announced at a meet-ing last Wednesday night.

The increase has been attributed to nd-ing that the ground under the Town Hall

is unsuitable and will require extensive work.

Other cost increases include a new roof and design changes to the hall.

Councillors were told that the gure was a worst case scenario, and that savings could be made down the line.

Clive’s Chemist, 20-21 Queen Street, Wainuiomata. (04) 564 8618 • [email protected] • www.clives.co.nz

After 12 years with the Unichem brand, Clive has decided it is time to go back to being an independent pharmacy.

Wainuiomata is a great placeHow often in business do you have the

privilege to be so involved in a town? To have been part of Wainuiomata for almost 30 years, and a business owner for 18 years has changed me. What a privilege to be loved and cared for by so many peo-ple. What a blast the last 18 years have been for my family, my team and me.

I wake up each morning looking forward to the new day, whatever it may bring, as no two days in Pharmacy are the same.

When I look back over 18 years of busi-ness I am grateful and proud of what we have achieved. Twice we have been the

NZ Pharmacy of the Year; we have been a fi nalist in the Wellington Top Shop compe-tition four times, and a winner once. And twice we have won the Hutt Valley Retailer of the Year.

But all those accolades don’t signify suc-cess. At the end of the day the true meas-ure of success, in whatever fi eld you are in, is whether you have touched the lives of the people around you – your family, your friends, and your community. And that is what I hope Clive’s Chemist has been able to do.

Looking ForwardThe future of our community is bright. I

want to be a part of that future, and linked to Wainuiomata for a long time.

By leaving the Unichem group, we will

have lots of opportunities to improve the business, which will mean lots of opportu-nities to help and touch our community in a positive way.

Our mission has always been to ensure that those people who trust us to care for them, leave our store feeling better than when they come in - whether it’s a pre-scription for a serious illness, a new lip-stick or even just a friendly chat or a shoul-der to cry on. And I believe we can do this better, be more responsive to local needs and develop support programmes for our community groups, as an independent pharmacy rather than as part of a national chain.

Exciting changesSo now we are rolling out exciting chang-

es. New signs, new logo, new uniforms, new website, and a new loyalty pro-gramme.

Then over the next six months we will be getting even more involved with our cus-tomers and our community.

I will keep everyone updated with regular emails and posts on Facebook.

Our pharmacy, Clive’s Chemist ‘The Hap-py Chemist’, is unique. We will continue to try and touch the lives of this community every single day. My sincere hope is that whenever you visit us you leave the shop a little better off than when you came in.

That is what is important.

Let’s Celebrate Wainuiomata!

The Wainuiomata Rugby League Premiers rebounded nicely after their slight hiccup last week to beat the St George Dragons this week.

Playing in terrible conditions didn’t stop the Lions from dominating the visitors all over the park, fi nishing with a 54-8 victory.

The result means that Wainuiomata has fi nished third in the regular sea-son, and now plays the University Hunters in an elimination match on Saturday.

If they win that, they will move on to face the loser of the major semifi nal between the Te Aroha Eels and the Randwick Kingfi shers.

The team has shown some impressive form in the second half of the season,

only dropping one game, to top of the table Te Aroha, although that was by only two points.

The Reserves played an entertaining 28 all draw with St George in the curtain raiser to the Premiers game.

The team is sitting in seventh on the table with thirteen points.

They travel to the Bernie Wood Turf in Porirua next week to play the Porirua Vikings.

Once again it was mixed results for the two teams in the senior fi rst competition.

The Indigenous Lions defeated the Randwick Kingfi shers 20-16, while the Fitzroy Lions went down 26-8 to the University Hunters.

The Indigenous Lions are in third with 18 points while the Fitzroy Lions are in fi fth with 10 points.

Another dominating victory for League side

Sports with Aaron Meredith

First and foremost, I am not just a rugby fan, I am a sports fan, I love sports, all sports not just the basic Rugby or League or Cricket.I do enjoy football or soccer or whatever some peo-ple call it, soccerfootball on the Crowd Goes Wild. This is why every transfer window whether it’s the summer or the winter window, fascinates me.As a Manchester United fan, yes I know, another United supporter, I was glad to see the signings that the club made, but I am not exclusively fol-lowing them. The two big Spanish clubs also provide some inter-est, purely as they pay stupid amounts of money for players that may never play a game.Real Madrid have spent 31.5 million euro on bring-ing a defender called Danilo from Porto, Barcelona spent 35 million on Arda Turan from Atletico Ma-drid, and then 20 million on another player.Back in the Premier League Manchester City just spent 69.4 million Pound on bringing Raheem Stirling from Liverpool, a player who is good, but I would hardly call worth anywhere near that much. And even my club is not immune to the over pay-ing for a player, they have paid 35 and 34 million each for Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay, when they only spent 20.25 million on the German captain, and world cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger. What I nd so fascinating is that these clubs would pay so much for these players, I sometimes even nd this time even more interesting that the actual sport. It’s like Free Agency in the NFL or NBA, what are these players going to do, where will they go, how much are people willing to pay for them.It is something that we do not have in New Zealand with rugby, we don’t have transfers, we don’t have free agency.Imagine if we did, some of the top players going to random provinces, teams paying astronomical amounts for them. But it’s probably better we leave it to the Europe-ans, they have the money, let them waste it.

Transfer Window Madness

Hockey Club back on winning waysThe Wainuiomata Hockey Club returned to their winning ways, with an outstanding 9-1 win over YWCA 2 on Sunday.Next week they play YWCA 1 at Fraser Park at 3.45pm on Sunday. This year out of the 10 games they have played, Wainuiomata have only lost one game all year. They have scored 53 goals and only conceded 7, all while returning to senior hockey after many seasons being defunct.

Super League proving tough for UlaleiThe Ulalei Netball club is still searching for their rst Regional Super League victory after going down to St Mary’s Old Girls 77-39.Next Wednesday they play Naenae Blue at Walter Nash Stadium, with the game starting at 6.30pm.In Hutt Valley league action, Ulalei showed much improvement against Upper Hutt Maidstone 2, although they went down 53-36.Ulalei 2 went down to Manaroa 32-18, but once again showed improvement.Next week at Walter Nash Stadium Ulalei 1 plays Upper Hutt Rams 1 at 11am and Ulalei 2 plays College Old Girls 3 at 1.30pm.

High School Rugby back onSchool is back on, so that means school sports are too, and Wainuiomata High Schools rugby teams are no di erent. The 1st XV is playing against Newlands at home at 1pm, the 2nd XV is away against Otaki at 11.30am.The Under 15’s are also away at Otaki, this time at 10am, The Under 65’s are playing at home against St Pats Wellington at 10am.On Thursday the Girls 1st XV is playing against Taita at 4pm, this game is at home.

Wainuiomata has always been a great producer of sports people, and a group of teenagers are showcasing this on the basketball court.

The group of seven children has been selected as Hutt Valley reps to play in the upcoming nationals.

This includes three that have been selected for the New Zealand Basketball Academy that will travel to Las Vegas.

The three children are Whatukura Ratana, Ezra Chase and Ezekiel Stall-worth, and all are looking forward to the opportunity.

“I was pretty shocked and excited at the

same time,” says Whatukura who has been selected for the fi rst time.

Whatukura has only been playing basketball for 5 months, and is really enjoying the sport.

Ezra has been playing for a couple of years, but was equally excited to be selected for the academy, also for the fi rst time.

Ezekiel has travelled before, but says it is good that more people from Wainuiomata have been selected.

All the players selected for both the Las Vegas trip and for the Hutt Valley reps have honed their skills at the Infi nity Foundation Wainuiomata Youth Sports Programme, which was run by Ezekiel’s

father Terry Stallworth.Terry says that all the teens have the

potential to go far in the sport, and all the children that have not been selected for the trip to the USA could be in the future.

All the basketballers say they love the sport, and want to progress as far as they can.

Terry says the boys that are travelling to Las Vegas will improve tenfold thanks to playing some high quality opposition, but believes the boys will handle themselves well.

“They all have the skills to make it, all they have to do is match the intensity of the American players,” he says.

“It is a different sport over there.”

Basketball booming in Wainuiomata

By Aaron Meredith and Sven Johnson

The Wainuiomata Rugby Colts cel-ebrated their fi rst game of the year at William Jones Park with an impressive 54-0 thumping of Paremata-Plimmerton.

In heavy conditions and pouring rain Wainuiomata started the game well, even if they were down on numbers due to injuries.

The home side opened the scoring within fi ve minutes with Stuart Upton jumping on a loose ball and scoring his fi rst try for

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC: Trei Mu with ball in hand in a recent match.

the season. The boys had locked away the four try

bonus point by halftime, up 26-0 at the break.

After an injury break Wainuiomata continued to score against a struggling Para/Plim team.

Many of the boys scored their fi rst try of the season, in all the Colts scored eight tries in the 54-0 rout.

Everyone stood up and played in tough conditions. Player of the day went to Stuart Upton.

Wainuiomata are now looking strong to hopefully fi nish with a home semi-fi nal for the James Gilbert Cup.

It wasn’t as good luck for the Wainuio-mata Premiers, who went down to Petone 29-28, although they did fi nish as the top Hutt Valley side for the year.

The season is now fi nished for the clubs top side, although most other teams are continuing throughout the next few weeks.

The Women are one of these teams after yet another thumping victory, this time 48-0 over Poneke, in their return to William Jones Park.

The Premier Reserves also had an easy victory, 51-19 against Avalon at Fraser Park.

The Under 85kg side did not have the same luck however, going down 38-10 to Marist St Pats Green.
