National Title caps off boxing career

Continued from page 1He then took a break for a few

years before returning, spending the last six years trying to win the national title.

“I told myself I would retire if I won the national title,” Cory says.

The Hutt Valley team is man-aged by Rob Cameron, one of the trainers from the Wainuiomata Boxing Club, which was also Cory’s junior club.

Rob says the results achieved down south were the best the region has achieved in the last decade.

Cory had two bouts. The fi rst he described as ‘a busy tough bout’ where he and his opposition traded blow after blow.

In the second, which was the national final, Cory stopped his opponent in the fi rst round, leading him to take out the national title.

Raymond also took away a national title, winning his third consecutive title in the cadet grade.

Wainuiomata Boxing Club head trainer Craig Bennett says although he is pleased with

Raymond’s performance, the boxer has still not reached his potential.

“I believe that we have only seen around 50 per cent of what Raymond can do,” says Craig.

Raymond says he could have performed a lot better in the bout.

“I was still dropping my left hand, it wasn’t as bad as last time I boxed.”

He has also managed to im-press Cory. The veteran says Raymond has an amazing array of skills and a lot of promise.

Wainuiomata Shakes Out

By Aaron Meredith

Wainuiomata locals took part in the nationwide earth-quake drill ShakeOut last Thursday.

This included those at the Parkway Kindergarten, where the students displayed how to drop, cover and hold.

Teacher Shellyn McAuley says that the kindergarten was keen to take part.

“It was a great opportu-nity for us to build children and families awareness of how to keep safe during an earthquake.

“Our children follow the ‘turtle safe rule’ whereby they drop to their knees, lean forward and clasp their hands together over the back

of their necks for safety. “Being ‘turtle safe’ is what

we practice with the children at kindergarten as we carry out our earthquake drills and we are confi dent that our children are prepared and know what to do in the event of an earthquake.”

ShakeOut was a nation-wide earthquake drill, over 1.3 million Kiwis signed up for the drill.

This included all council staff and many businesses around Wainuiomata.

When it comes to your heart, you may never know what is going on until it is too late.

That is why local doctors at Whai Oranga Health Centre, are encour-aging patients within certain age groups to take a simple cardiovas-cular risk assessment, to fi nd out what is really happening with the most vital part of the human body.

Nurse Robyn Munn says Whai Oranga Health Centre has been sending out letters to their patients, so they can book in for this essential

test.“Getting an assessment could

provide some useful information about the risk a patient could be in when it comes to heart failure and diabetes.

“It provides an early indication, so that we can support the patient to make changes, this may be with diet or exercise.”

The assessment is very simple and takes 30 minutes. The patient will need to have a blood test two days before their appointment.

The test results, blood pressure and family history are then entered into

the cardiovascular risk assessment programmewhich then shows how healthy your heart is.

Local resident Dan Umaga says he took the assessment so he could live a healthier life.

“I want to see my grandchildren grow up, I want to keep my diabetes under control as well.”

The assessment is free for all males over the age of 35 and all females over the age of 45. “It is vital that people get their heart checked, you don’t want the ambulance at the bottom of the hill waiting for you,” says Dan.

Health check is vital

Kokiri combine with the Hub

A massive choir of over 750 school students helped to celebrate the opening of the new Walter Nash Centre in Taita.

The students from local schools were joined by many well-known locals as well as Waiamarama Taumanu.

The new centre features ve multi-purpose courts, a new library a tness centre, meeting spaces and a café.

The council is extremely happy with the new centre, saying it will be an asset to the community.

In late September Hutt City Council signed a memorandum of understanding with Kokiri Marae with the intention of im-proving the quality of life for young people and their families in Wainuiomata.

Kokiri Marae is a longstanding service provider at the com-munity centre offering a broad range of health, family sup-port and social services. They have recently won funding to provide youth programmes and are in a strong position to offer an even more holistic range of

family/whanau services; with an increased emphasis on/youth and their families. Due to their increased presence in the centre, Kokiri will provide reception services for Wainuiomata com-munity members who choose to access the community hub through the centre rather than the library.

Hutt City Council manages the Wainuiomata community centre and library as the Wainuiomata Community Hub. The changes above do not change the way a broad range of organisations and

groups will continue to deliver programmes and services with the support of community volun-teers. Programmes and services such as Community Law advice, the foodbank, budget advice and others are well used and highly valued by the community. The Hub also offers spaces for groups looking for a central and easily accessed meeting venue. Despite only being launched last week, the Create Your Taste service at Petone McDonald’s is already being called a success.

Petone is one of six restaurants in the Wellington region to bring the unique experience to the public, something that moves away from the traditional McDonald’s menu.

Owner Chris Boon, who also owns Wainuiomata McDonald’s says the feedback they have got from the public has been great.

“One of the comments said that we have won a customer back after not going to McDonald’s for such a long time, that is what we want to hear.”

The Create Your Taste experience includes a digital kiosk, where you can create your own burgers, then it becomes more like a restaurant than a fast food service.

Customers are served up their creations by friendly staff.

“It really is an innovative – and almost futuristic – dining experi-ence and quite different from what our customers will be used to at McDonald’s.

“Not only can customers order at digital kiosks and have their meal delivered to their table, but they can design their perfect burger, exactly how they want it.”

To fi nd out what customers think about the new service, McDonald’s uses the My Macca’s review ap-

Even though the service has not come to Wainuiomata, Chris has brought in a new digital ordering service at the restaurant.

“Instead of having to line up like usual, people can order on these, creating a much smoother service,” he says.

By shaving her head, Eddy’s Bar Manager Tania Smith showed her support for those that were suffering from breast cancer.

On Friday Night, the local bar held a ladies night to raise money and awareness for the many women that are dealing with the disease.

October is breast cancer aware-ness month and Breast Cancer New Zealand is challenging Ki-wis to take action against Breast Cancer, the most common cancer in New Zealand women.

The night started off with Tania shaving off her hair, something that everyone was extremely proud of her for doing.

The shaving was done by pro-fessional hairdresser Ria Bond who told Tania that she was doing a great thing.

“A lot of females feel empow-ered when they fi rst see them-selves with a shaved head.”

Ria came all the way up from Invercargill to shave Tania’s head.

The night continued with a pink theme, pink balloons were placed everywhere and a pink punch was made up.

Tania said she is ok with it as her hair will grow back quickly.

“Knowing my hair, it will grow back within six months.”

Eddy’s raises awareness

In all Eddy’s made $500 towards the cause, making them very happy with how the night went.

Eddy’s staff would also like to thank all the businesses that donated prizes which were raf-fl ed off, including Clives Chem-

ist, Umi Sushi, Dominos Pizza, McDonalds, Amcal Pharmacy, Beauty Solutions, Hammer Hard-ware, CPC and Hurry Up Shoes.

“Thank you all so much for your support.”

An early morning wakeup call is the last straw for a family who are battling against boy racers.

At 3am on Sunday morning the Wilkinson’s were woken up after a car lost control and crashed through their fence on Dover Road.

The crash wiped out the fence, as well as part of the family’s playground just inside the fence.

Home owner Rana Wilkinson says she is sick of the constant speeding around the area, and wants something done about it.

“They should get a speed cam-era around here, and a barrier so they cannot hit the fence again.

“We have boy racers here all the time, pulling burnouts, our neighbours fence has been hit twice since we moved in 10 years ago.”

What worries Rana the most is

a car crashing into her family’s house.

“Our children’s bedrooms are on the roadside, I am worried about if a car is going so fast it crashes into the house.”

Police were contacted straight after the incident.

If anyone has any informa-tion relating to Sunday‘s inci-dent, they are asked to contact crimestoppers.

Tertiary institute Weltec has shown its support for the upcoming Hutt Valley Youth Awards.

The institute is one of a huge number of businesses that have been confi rmed as spon-sors for the inaugural awards, a new initiative designed to shine a light on talented young people.

Sponsors include GNS Science, Ignite Sport, The Dowse Art Museum and Hutt City Council.

Chair of the organising committee, Chris Bishop MP, says that he and the organising committee have been overwhelmed by the response from local organisations.

“It’s great to see the community getting be-hind this new initiative. Thanks to all who have

come on board as sponsors and supporters.” “The platinum sponsor is WelTec, which

is highly appropriate as a tertiary institution with a signifi cant Hutt presence, educating and training our young people.

The achievements of Wainuio-mata High School students will be recognised at the school’s upcoming awards season.

The awards season will kick off with the Sports Awards. The ceremony will be held on

Thursday October 29 and will recognise what has been one of the best sporting years the school has seen.

The following Thursday the Year 11 and Senior Prize Giv-ing will take place.

Major awards include School Dux, Sportswoman and Sports-

man of the year as well as the announcement of next year’s Head Students.

The school wants to invite everyone in the community to come along to the award ceremonies.

Staff members Hayley Law-rence and Peter Cowan say it is

not only about the school but the entire community.

“Our students have been involved all around the com-munity, not just here at school” Hayley says.

Other award ceremonies the school is holding includes the Rangatahi Learning Centre

Prize Giving on Friday De-cember 4 and the Junior Prize Giving on Friday December 11.

“The Rangatah i Lea rn-ing Centre awards show the achievements of students that have turned their education around after once having prob-lems at school,” says Hayley.

Awards week coming up

Dear Ed, I was saddened to receive a letter last week from my dentists announcing their retirement. My dentist, Mr James Fong and his assistant and wife Anne have been my dentists

and friends for 40 years, They are such lovely people I am sure many in Wainuiomata have ap-preciated the care and attention they have received from these two very special people, and

whilst any trip to the dentist can be fraught with anxiety, we had many laughs together and they had a great way of making you feel at ease and also didn’t charge the earth, so the visit

wasn’t too hard on your wallet either.

They have been a wonderful part of the Wainuiomata com-munity and I wish them happi-ness in their retirement and only

hope I get to see them again soon as they are such loving people and I wanted to tell them so in person.

Steve OwensWainuiomata

Happy retirement

Dear Ed, How beautiful it is to see all the Rhododendrons in full fl owers up the hill, spring has certainly struck.

What a sight they are as you drive up, you can see them

everywhere on the side of the road.

I love this time of year, sum-mer is coming, all the birds are chirping, there are lambs and calves on the farm paddocks,

what could be better?Lets hope this is the begin-

ning to a long hot summer, we need one after a very cold and wet winter.

Scott Johnston heads up THREE65, ‘Our new name speaks of our committment to our qual-ity products which perform 365 days a year’

Continuous Spouting Wellington has a new name, a new look and an extended product range.

Director Scot t Johnston says THREE65 is the new name for a com-pany that has been servicing Wellington since 1996.

Since Scott took over in 2007, Continu-ous Spouting Wellington has grown to a team of 17 professionals.

“Spouting is what we do and we do it well. We’ve been delighting people with our top-quality service and our continuous spouting products for years, and now we have the opportunity to build on that, to expand and to diver-sify,” says Scott.

As well as manufacturing market-leading steel and copper continuous spouting products, the company now offers PVC spouting installation, com-pleting its total solution approach.

“We have also invested in new machin-ery that gives us total control over our

quality products, which is good news for our clients.

“To cement the changes I wanted a new name that speaks of our commit-ment to our quality products, which perform 365 days a year, every year, year after year.

“The name change is about our matur-ing as a business and offering a total solution. We are no longer defi ned by offering solely the continuous style of spouting.

“Behind the new name we are still operating with the same team of highly qualified and experienced install-ers. They will install your rainwater products to the highest standard in the market and provide you with the best solution that meets your needs,” says Scott.

Our native orchids are very unlike the showy blooms found in other parts of the world and cultivated by New Zealand gardeners.

They are usually tiny, but when you know where and how to fi nd them, you’ll fi nd a wide and fascinating variety, particularly from this time of year right through autumn.

In bloom at the moment are corybas, com-monly known as spider orchids.

The most common, corybas tribolus is found as masses of tiny kidney-shaped leaves growing close to the ground, often at the base of trees.

If you look closely when they’re in fl ower you’ll notice what look like antennae, which are in fact petals. Remaining petals form the dark hood petal and the lip petal.

Orchid seeds are very tiny and dust-like and can only grow when invaded by the fi laments of a soil fungus, which in turn provide nourish-ment so the seed can grow into a young plant.

Once the orchid forms chlorophyll (the substance that makes leaves green), it makes sugars which feeds the fungus.

The 130 species of New Zealand native orchids grow not only on the forest fl oor, but as epiphytes in trees, in pine forests, wetlands and we have at least two varieties growing on our lawns in the warmer months.

More about these later. For more informa-tion on orchids, see www.nativeorchids.co.nz.

Cultural vibrancy and pride were on display in the Hutt Valley last month as locals celebrated Hindi Day.

Hindi Day is an international day of celebration which marks the adop-tion of Devanagari script.

Wellington’s Hindi day was organ-ised by Wellington Hindi School and was attended by guests from the Indian High Commission, Fijian High Commission and Hutt City Council.

Guests were entertained with poems, songs, plays and a bharatan-atyam, at last months performance.

The bharatanatyam, a classical

indian dance, was performed by former Hindi School student Krishna Narayan.

There were also many speakers who refl ected on how learning Hindi was helping them in their daily lives.

Arnav Singh, 8, said he thought it was “cool to be bilingual”.

In his speech, he emphasised that knowing Hindi helped him to have meaningful conversations with his non-English speaking grandparents.

“I also have learned more about the culture and important histori-cal stories like Mahabharata and Ramayana.”

Over 500 million people worldwide speak Hindi and the language is the fourth most spoken in New Zealand.

Local BMX riders are preparing to take on the best the North Island can throw at them this weekend.

Many members of the Wainuiomata BMX Club are heading up to Taupo over Labour Weekend to compete in the North Island Championships.

All the riders are extremely excited and believe they can do well in the racing.

This weekend many of the riders were practicing down at the local BMX track, looking to get themselves into top shape for the upcoming races.

Riders off to New Zealand Champs

The Wainuiomata Rare Breeds produced the only victory for the senior softball teams this weekend.

The 13-5 victory over Stokes Val-ley Red sees them remain as the only unbeaten side in their grade.

After having Labour Weekend off, The Rare Breeds will take on Hutt Valley Marist on Saturday October 31, their game begins at 1.15pm at JMM.

The Wainuiomata Presidents had to contend with a change of location, as their game against the Giants was transferred to Masterton.

They eventually went down 3-2, in what was a closely fought battle throughout the match.

Club offi cials are annoyed at why the Hutt Valley Softball double booked the diamond at Wise Park, forcing the presidents game to be moved.

The team now has a 1 and 1 record, and are sitting mid table on two points.

In two weeks the team plays Totara Park at Maidstone Park, beginning at 1.15pm.

In Premier Three capital softball, Wainuiomata were destroyed by Newlands 19-0, and are yet to get off the mark this season.

Women produce clubs solitary win

By Whitney Morgan

After a stellar season and fi nishing off the year winning their club final, Whitney Morgan and Navada Blake have no time to relax.

They both were selected to represent Takitimu at the National Maori Hockey Tour-nament, hosted this year by Te Tai Tokerau in Whangarei.

Both ladies were very happy with their selection after attending a trial held in Car-terton back in June.

“It was a rush to get to the trial as we had a club game on the same day in Wellington” says Whitney. “But we made

it and it was well worth it”.Navada Blake has previ-

ously represented Takitimu, Wairarapa and also received ‘Offi cial of the Year’ at the 2014 College Sport Welling-ton Awards for her contribu-tion as a hockey Umpire.

She has umpired at pre-mier level and was chosen to umpire at National level for Under 13’s, 15’s and 18’s.

“The standard of hockey played at Maori’s Tournament is very high and I’m stoked to be a part of it again” says Navada.

Whitney Morgan has been a hockey representative at both National and International

level. Having played Mas-ters for Wellington, Canter-bury and New Zealand, she has never played at a Maori National Tournament before.

“It’s another challenge and it’s going to be tough but I’m really looking forward to my fi rst Maori Tournament” she says.

Based on the Maori Land Court Boundaries, Takitimu draws players from Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa and Wel-lington.

The National Maori Hockey Tournament is held annually every Labour Weekend and has done so since 1992.

Successful season continues

TOP RIDERS: Natasha Hargraves and Kasey Thompson-Delany are both ready for the North Island Championships over the coming weekend.

Ta k i n g u p R u g by League only two years ago has not stopped Sieni Samau from making the New Zealand Kiwi Ferns Squad.

The Year 13 from Wai-nuiomata High School has been selected after a strong performance at the national tournament which took place during the fi nal week of the last school term.

“I was shocked when I made the team, it was my fi rst nationals,” Sieni says.

The squad assembles in November for train-ing camps, preparing for games next year.

The chance to play with and against some high quality players excites

Sieni who says she is also looking forward to meet-ing her new teammates.

“I know a couple of team mates from playing with them in the Wel-lington squad.”

Sieni plays at either full-back or on the wings, and originally took up league as it was ‘something to do’.

She also plays rugby union, and was selected for the Wellington Under 18’s squad, earlier this year.

Sieni gives credit to her coaches for her achieve-ments this year, say-ing she would not have achieved as much if it wasn’t for them.

Now her focus has turned to the upcoming NCEA exams.

From High School to the Kiwi Ferns

FUTURE STAR: Sieni Samau has been selected for the Kiwi Ferns Rugby League team, despite only playing the sport for two years.
