Continued from page 2The large contingent of

people was a shock for the Wainuiomata Valley RSA president Bart Bartlett who says it was a great turnout.

“Thankyou to everyone that showed up,” he says to the crowd that were in attendance.

Also at the 11am service there was a display of Military equipment from various eras, including an old cannon that got fi red after the service.

Councillor Campbell Barry spoke at the service, telling stories from his Grandfathers diary from when he was at war.

Mayor Ray Wallace also spoke at the service and says that there were no winners

when it came to war.One attendee Grant says that

this is the best turnout that he has ever seen since he has been coming to the services.

“It is great to see, I have never seen so many people turn up to this event before and I have been coming for many years,” he says.

“I guess that being the centu-ry has helped with the turnout, I hope that this continues into the future as well.”

The large turnouts were com-mon all over the country, with both Wellington and Auckland breaking records for attend-ance at the ceremonies.

The Lower Hutt Service also broke the record.

Wainuiomata Grey Power had its monthly meeting last Wednesday, and the special guest speaker was Andy Ellis from Simplicity Funerals.

Andy was there explaining how his funeral home was cheaper than others, and the various ways that someone

could pay or even pre pay their funeral.

“We encourage people to not arrange their funerals in the weekend as it can save money during the week,” he says.

“I always thought a funeral could be done cheaper.”

The company also provides ecofriendly services.

Andy has been working in

funeral homes for nearly 20 years, so his experience when it came to funerals was valuable when it came to any questions that were asked.

One member of Grey Power asked if there were any rules in where ashes could be spread, and the response was surprising.

“You are not allowed to put ashes in the rose gardens at the

botanical gardens as nothing will actually grow,”

“Although there has been some studies shown that the Nutrients in soil break the ashes down so that there is no traces of DNA in it.”

There will be another meeting next month, with plans that the guest speaker will be as interest-ing as this one.

As the public hearings on the Local Government Com-mission’s amalgamation pro-posal come to a close, Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace advises the region’s residents to be vigilant over the fi nal proposal issued by the Local Government Commission.

“The worst th ing now would be to see a half-baked alternative from the Local Government Commission just because they need some kind of outcome to justify all this work.”

“They will have squandered the opportunity for real, posi-tive change,” he says.

Mayor Wallace says a fi nal proposal for a single unitary authority combining the nine councils of the Wellington region is now unlikely to be the final proposal tabled, given the overwhelming op-position from the public and majority of councils in the affected region.

He says the Commission should now only conclude whether its current draft pro-

posal has been accepted or rejected by the majority of residents.

“Once that decision is made it needs to go back to the drawing board to properly research and evaluate a viable alternative. Besides advice that this is a legal require-ment, nobody charged with promoting local democracy should want to issue a fi nal proposal that the community hasn’t had a chance to consult on.”

Mayor Wallace says resi-

dents need to be wary of a “super city by stealth” if the Commission puts forward a proposal that is a “super city” model in all but name.

“A bundle of powers and services handed over to a regional council, without this full process, would not be acceptable” he says.

“No one can get such a complex proposal on local democracy right without do-ing the groundwork and then properly consulting those affected.”

Students at Wainuiomata High School paid their re-spects to the ANZAC’s last week when they opened up their own fi eld of remem-brance.

The school was one of many round the valley that had a ceremony like this, where the students got the chance to pay respect for those who sacrificed so much for our country.

The field was organised by teacher Adam Weir, who was pleased with the work that the students involved did.

“I would like to thank all my students, that took part in this,” he says.

The students studied the ANZAC’s, and gathered all the names of fallen soldiers, the names were placed on crosses.

“We got the names of all the soldiers that died in the war from the Cenotaph down the mall,” Adam says.

The students then placed poppies within the crosses.

Students have been work-ing on this throughout term one, and Adam says every-one has enjoyed the work.

“It has been fun working on, everyone has learnt a

lot,” he says. This has included studying

the war, learning and putting together resources towards the project.

Wainuiomata Valley RSA president Bart Bartlett was also in attendance, and he thanked the students that took part in the service.

Fernlea School students had their own chance to remember the fallen Anzac’s last week.

The school was one of many around the valley that held services to mark the 100th anniversary of the battle of Gallipoli.

Included in the service, stu-dents got to place poppies down next to crosses that were placed next to the fl ag.

The last post was also played along with the Anzac ode being read.

In World War One, 10 percent of Wainuiomata’s residents went to war and never returned.

This includes many of the names that were on crosses at schools around the valley, there was also a display in the Wainuiomata Shopping Centre telling the Boys of Wainuio-mata’s story.

The display won’t be at the mall for much longer, but will be displayed at the Wainuio-mata Museum afterwards.

The display is located in the window next to A1 Sushi.

Business owners in Wai-nuiomata were given the secret to success on Friday, by one of their own.

Clive Cannons spoke at the Wainuiomata business break-fast, letting the other business owners of Wainuiomata in on his secret.

He explained his seven steps to success and how that a

positive attitude and planning can improve the way a busi-ness succeeds.

“I have a boredom meter, and I rate every store I go into on this meter on the general vibe of the store, the service, everything,” he says.

He also explained ways that a business can climb the ladder, and it all came down to the owner of the store.

The fi rst step was Attitude

and waking up with a good attitude every day.

“I wake up and choose to have a good attitude every day,” he says.

“If I have a bad attitude while serving customers, it gives my staff permission to have a bad mood also.”

He also encouraged people to surround themselves with positive people, that will help them succeed.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my friends giving me a poke in the right derection,” Clive says.

Also speaking at the break-fast was Dave Head, who was representing Wainuiomata Sportsville.

He gave an update on what was happening in Sportsville and why it was crucial that it succeeded.

Shared with Anzac Day, this Sat-urday 25 April is also World Tai Chi Day, an annual event held on the last Saturday of April each year to recog-nise and celebrate all things Tai Chi.

Enliven positive ageing services, part of Presbyterian Support Central, is taking the opportunity to encourage older Wellingtonians and others with mobility issues to give their modifi ed Tai Chi classes a go.

Enliven Tai Chi instructor Chris Mori says there are plenty of reasons why Tai Chi is worth recognising and getting involved in.

“Keeping active is important as people age, and Tai Chi is a fun, social and gentle form of exercise full of benefi ts,” Chris explains.

“Doing Tai Chi regularly can im-prove balance and fl exibility to help reduce the risk of falls, and the slow and gentle movements are tailored for older people to maintain and improve

their overall health.” Chris says Tai Chi can help to im-

prove health conditions such as high or low blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, respiratory conditions and weight issues.

“Tai Chi helps improve circulation, heart health and muscle strength. It’s meditation in motion so it’s very relax-ing and it strengthens muscles without putting strain on them.”

Enliven’s Tai Chi classes have been especially modified for older people and those with mobility issues. Classes are just $5 and are held at Wai-nuiomata’s Union Church every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am. There’s no need to book, just show up on the day.

For more information about En-liven’s Tai Chi, call 04 439 4967 or email [email protected]. Visit www.enlivencentral.org.nz for more in-formation about Enliven’s services.

Dear Ed, With regards to the Mayor's comment that the speed-ing in Wellington Rd has im-proved, I beg to disagree.

I live near Dover Rd and at all hours of the day and night we hear cars accelerating after the electronic speed device and then roaring off up the road - making it sound like a race track. How no-one has been killed is a miracle!

Is it not possible to make speed bumps, like in Moohan St, to slow the traffi c?

Also, there are only 2 pedestrian crossings in the whole of Wel-lington Rd. More of these would possibly make it safer for children and older people who walk slowly and need to cross this very busy road.

New Zea land Post has reached an agreement with United Video in Wainuiomata that will see it run postal and over-the-counter banking ser-vices from Monday 31 August 2015.

In May last year, New Zea-land Post told its team and the community about its intention to seek a local business in Wai-nuiomata to operate postal and banking services on its behalf.

New Zealand Post General Manager for Retail Distribu-tion, Tracey Berry says the agreement with United Video, just 50 metres up the road from the existing PostShop, will be convenient for customers.

“From August this year cus-tomers can run all of their postal, courier, photo ID and bill payment errands, as well as their over-the-counter bank-ing, from United Video at 10

The Stand, Wainuiomata. United Video Owner David

Williamson said partnering with Post in Wainuiomata makes sense for his business.

“I am looking forward to working with New Zealand Post in Naenae as well as Wai-nuiomata. I have a background in banking and have a team I can rely on to deliver fantastic service from day one.

“Both my managers in Nae-nae and Wainuiomata have been with me since I took over the United Video shops in 2008. We are committed to our communities and look forward to Postal and bank-ing services bringing a new dynamic to the business,” David Williamson said.

“The proximity of United Video to the existing PostShop means there will be little disruption for Wainuiomata

customers,” Tracey Berry says.

“Anyone looking for more complex banking services, like home loan applications or guidance on opening new ac-counts, can visit New Zealand

Post’s Queensgate Central PostShop in Queensgate’s Westfi eld Mall or at the Petone PostShop at 1/2017 Jackson St, Petone.”

Customers can also access banking services via phone

or internet banking. New Zealand Post will work with its customers in the lead up to the change to help them understand and sign up for these services.

“Wainuiomata’s Kiwibank ATM will continue to be available for cash withdrawals and balance enquiries and New Zealand Post’s existing PO Boxes will relocate to United Video’s premises. We will be writing to our PO Box customers about the changes and are working closely with our staff,” Tracey Berry said.

New Zealand Post’s services will be offered from United Video from Monday 31 Au-gust. The existing Wainuio-mata PostShop will close at 5pm on Friday 28 August.

“Until then it’s business as usual at the Wainuiomata PostShop,” Tracey Berry said.

A Wainuiomata High School Student, her Teacher and a group of Wainuiomata women have teamed up to create a Anzac masterpiece.

The group created a poppy laden painting that was to be displayed at the Anzac Day Parade last Saturday.

Ariana Randall says she was approached by her teacher

Fiona Waitere about helping out with the project.

“I loved doing it, it was fun, I am very pleased with how it turned out,” she says.

Her teacher reiterated Ari-ana’s thoughts, saying that she is really pleased with the fi nished project.

“I am amazed how great it looks, we didn’t really have any idea what the other group was doing, so we had to imagine,

it has really turned out great,” Fiona says.

Councillor Margaret Willard says that she was really pleased with how it turned out.

“It looks fantastic, everyone should be proud with how it looks,” she says.

At the parade, the piece of art was displayed behind the official party, and plenty of people commented on how it looked.

The Hutt Valley celebrat-ed the opening of its own Anzac Lawn last week, just in time for Anzac Day.

The area in front of the War Memorial Library was redeveloped to create the lawn, that came complete with a brand new cenotaph as well.

The Hutt City Council worked with the Lower Hutt RSA to ensure that everything was perfect be-fore the lawn was opened.

Deputy Mayor David Bassett spoke at the open-ing and says that the area serves as a great reminder of what the ANZAC’s did.

“We delivered a tribute that will remind the gen-erations to come of the sacrifi ces made by those who served our country in

a number of wars, battles and campaigns,” he says.

“It also reinforces the importance of the War Memorial Library which provides a fitting back-drop.”

More than 200 people came to the opening.

Deputy Mayor Bassett explained to the people how the colours of red white and blue represent both Australia and New Zealand.

“The last three panels – dark blue, red and blue – are the colours that respec-tively represent our Navy, Army and Air Force,” he says.

“The colours in the mid-dle section are a repre-sentative sample of colours used to symbolise the rib-bons of war medals where New Zealand have served.”

The Wainuiomata Premiers gave their old timers a reason to celebrate, beating Petone 20-11 on the Weekend.

The team were led by Tyler Tane’s accurate boot, after he kicked fi ve penalties, to effectively kick the visitors out of the game.

The half time score as 9-3, although both sides had chances to score the opening try, but could not convert their opportunities.

The tries fi nally came in the second half, Wainuio-mata sealing the game with a try to replacement wing Hokianga Morunga giving the home side a 20-6 lead.

Petone continued to fi ght, and were rewarded when hooker Eugene Sm it h charged over for a late con-solation try.

The result puts Wainuio-mata in sixth on the table on 18 points, equal with next week’s opposition Upper Hutt.

The Premier Reserves suf-fered their second loss of the season, going down 27-36 to a well drilled Petone side.

This puts them also in sixth with 18 points.

The Under 85kg restricted team also had a loss, going down in a tight struggle 8-14 to Wellington B.

They also sit in sixth on the table, leaving them with six points after the three games played.

The women had a week off this week due to Anzac Day.

Next week both the Premier and Premier Reserve teams travel to Maidstone Park to play the Upper Hutt Rams.

The Premier Reserves play at 12.45pm, while the pre-miers follow at 2.30pm.

The Premiers will be look-ing to keep their momentum to make the Jubilee Cup in the second round.

The Women are playing on Friday night against Avalon at Fraser Park, the game kicks off at 7.45pm.

The Wainuiomata Rugby League Club celebrated its open weekend with some good results.

The Premiers dominated Petone 60-10 at Wise Park.

The home side ran out to a solid 26-4 half time lead, and continued this dominance in the second half, running in another 34 points.

Good performances came for half Murphy Allbright, George Ngaronga and Ulai Oti, who all score two tries each.

Oti was named man of the match after having a great all round performance all game.

The result leaves them in fourth on the table on four points after the three games played.

In other results the Reserves went down heavily to the Trentham Titans on Monday.

This result puts them in sixth on the table, with three points after three rounds.

In the senior fi rst competition both sides had victories.

The Fitzroy Lions destroyed the Kapiti Coast Bears 54-20, while the Indigenous Lions just scrapped past the University Hunters 20-16.

The Fitzroy Lions are sitting in second on the table on four points, while the Indigenous Lions are sitting in fourth with two points

The womens side unfortu-nately had a loss to Titahi Bay by 50-28.

They are still sitting third on the table however.

Next week the Premiers are playing on Friday Night at the Hutt Rec against the Upper Hutt Tigers at 6pm.

The Reserves are also playing the Tigers, although they will be playing on Saturday at 2.30pm at Wise Park.

The two senior fi rst teams are playing against each other at Wise Park, in the curtain raiser to the Reserves game.

The Women are playing on Sunday at 2.30pm against the Petone Panthers, the game is being played at Te Whiti Park.

League club has successful weekend

We all know that this weekend the Kan-garoos and Kiwis are playing their annual Anzac Test in Brisbane, but why can’t this be carried over in every sport?Imagine one big weekend of New Zealand versus Australia Sporting events, and it doesn’t matter what sport. And at the end of the weekend, the country with the most victories wins the ANZAC Cup.Yes there are great sporting events on Anzac Day, the AFL, and the NRL, there was plenty of rugby and Netball, but wouldn’t action at the highest level make pay an even better tribute.Imagine a weekend where you could sit on your couch on Friday Night, watch the Kiwis take on the Kangaroos, then Satur-day wake up and watch the BlackJacks play the Jackaroos in Lawn Bowls. On Saturday Night have the fi rst Bledisloe Cup game of the year, when the All Blacks run out against Wallabies. The Cricket could take place on Sunday, the Netball on Monday, why not make it one of the biggest sporting weekends in the year.It doesn’t matter what sport it is, just play it, New Zealand v Australia, over here or over there, it doesn’t matter. The soldiers used sports to de stress at times of war, why not use sports to remember those who sacrifi ced so much for us.Out two countries share a passion for sports like very few others, I highly doubt that people wouldn’t get behind this.Between the two countries, we have the arena’s to do it, we have the resources and the capabilities, it’s just a matter of someone organising it.

What about some Anzac spirit on the fi eld

Three Wainuiomata Box-ers recently travelled up to Rotorua to compete in a tournament, with some suc-cess coming from the bouts

R ay mond Seu m a nu , Chance Crawford Mick-leson and Jared Paku, all competed in bouts against opposition from around the country.

Bo t h R ay mond a nd Chance had split decision victories, Jared unfortu-nately had a split decision loss.

All three boxers felt that there bouts could have gone better, both Jared and Ray-mond say that their fi tness was the problem, Chance felt that he just wasn’t men-tally in the bout.

“I just couldn’t get into the bout, I don’t really know why but I couldn’t get into it,” he says.

Head Trainer Craig Ben-nett says that he felt that Jared was the better boxer in the bout, so that the deci-sion could have gone either way.

“Jared was up against a boy from the Manawatu that he beat last time, so he was out for revenge,” he says.

Raymond came up against a boy from Ruatoria whom he had never fought before.

Chance also came up against someone he had never faced before, a boxer from Rotorua who was much larger than him.

The three are hoping that they get selected to rep-resent Wellington at the Nationals, hence the reason they are travelling to boxing tournaments.

All three believe they can make the team, and are focused on getting the right results to make it.
