Continued from page 1Jared stepped up however,

winning his bout, and im-proved throughout the match as well.

“I felt like I could have boxed better though,” he says.

Both Jared and his coach felt that he lost the fi rst round, but then improved in the second and third to take the bout, although the judges felt he had won all three.

“In the second round he looked like the better boxer,” says head coach Craig Ben-nett.

“He still didn’t show his best however, he can do a lot better.”

Jared says he felt quite capable at the extra weight division, and thinks he can keep going at the higher grade.

Raymond also had to step up to a higher grade, stepping

up from the cadet grade to the junior division,

He also had two bouts on the day, the fi rst time that he has done this, as well as having to deal with an extra 30 seconds per round than he was used to, it was quite a step up.

This didn’t stop Raymond winning both bouts, show-ing his superior fi tness even though it was longer than he was used to.

“The fi rst boy was trying to finish Raymond in the first round, but Raymond withstood this and then wore him down in the second and third rounds,” says Craig.

“In the second match, Ray-mond’s skills went up an-other level, he out boxed and outclassed his opponent.”

Raymond says that he was able to do this by a com-bination of listening to his coaches while in the bout,

but still thinking about what he had to do as well.

“I was listening out for them, but still looking for openings as well,” he says.

Craig Bennett as well as his other coaches Rob Cameron

and Rico Seumanu say that Raymond is the best cadet in the country, but all the boxers in the gym have as much potential as Raymond, all they have to do is work as hard.

FUTURE STARS: Coaches of both Jared and Raymond say that both have the potential to go far in the sport of boxing.

Chris Bishop, National List MP based in the Hutt Val-ley, says more children than ever before in the Hutt Val-ley are benefi ting from free before school health checks.Introduced in 2008, the B4 School Check is the fi nal core Well Child/Tamariki Ora check. Checks are provided free through a range of com-munity health services and include hearing, eyesight, height, weight, and oral health assessments, as well

as comprehensive health and development questionnaires.

“B4 School Checks help to give children the best start at school by identifying and addressing any poten-tial health or developmental problems at an early stage.“90 per cent of eligible chil-dren – over 1900 kids - have received a free B4 School Check through the Hutt Val-ley District Health Board this year. 90% of eligible

children in high depriva-tion areas received a check.“The government’s target is 90 percent, which means we’re helping build a sol-id foundation for the vast majority of four-year-olds before they start school. The Government invests around $10 million each year to provide the free checks which have benefited more than 300,000 children and their families since the pro-gramme began in 2008.

“National is focused on giv-ing our kids the best start to life through initiatives like this and free GP visits which were extended to all children under-13 on July 1,” says Mr Bishop.

Members of Wainuiomata Grey Power were given the chance to see how victims of crime and abuse cope thanks to Victim Support.

Members from Victim Sup-port talked to Grey Power this week telling stories of how they have helped people all around the country.

Liz McLean and Lee Muir spoke to the members and had some interesting facts about how much crime is reported in New Zealand.

“Everyday 1000 crimes are reported to the police, these happen to all sorts of people,” says Liz.

“Our justice system is disen-gaged and not helpful for the victim, the person committing the crime can be in court with five or six support people, while the victim could have none, we are here to change that.”

Victim Support is run by vol-unteers all around the country, these volunteers are there to help victims with anything, including telling them their

rights or just being an ear to listen to.

“Going through a crime can be a real shock to someone,” says Liz.

“That’s why we have our service, which is run 24 hours a day.”

Lee Muir runs what is hap-pening in the Hutt Valley and says that the Hutt Valley volunteers have been great.

“The Hutt Valley is a lovely community, we have also had a number of volunteers from Wainuiomata although they have retired from volunteer-

ing,” she says.“We would be very happy to

have volunteers from Wainuio-mata again, it would be very precious to us.”

When asked by people what is in it for the volunteers, Liz and Lee say it is a great feeling of personal satisfaction.

“You get that warm fuzzy feeling inside and gain a lot of self-value,” says Liz.

Victim Support is 80 percent funded by the government, which means that the group has to fi nd the last 20 percent themselves.

Dog Owners are reminded that their dog registration is due.

If dogs are not registered the owner could face a ne, so it is much cheaper to register your dog.

This also means that if your dog is lost and the pound picks it up, it is more likely to be returned to you, or you will be noti ed where it is.

For more information on how to register your dog, please visit the Hutt City Council Website.

This week is Maori Language Week, and the language has always been a part of Labour MP for Ikaroa Rawhiti Meka Whaitiri’s life.

“The Mãori language is part of who I am as a person, as a New Zealander and as Mãori living in this country,” she says.

“If I did not have it, I would not be who I am, It is part of my identity, it gives me purpose and validates me as a person.”

The theme for this week is Whãngaihia te reo Mori ki nga Mãtua, supporting the language development of parents who can then whãngai the language to their tamariki.

The Mãori language has been a part of Meka’s life from when she grew up in a small town just outside of Gisborne.

“There were four marae in our com-munity of Manutuke, we lived right opposite one and we were pretty much raised on them,” she says.

“When we moved to Hastings, it was to my mother’s whanau who lived on the Kohupatiki marae and, in those days, the marae was the bastion of the language - it was spoken all the time.”

Meka even remembers how members

of her family could not speak English, and her entire family is totally bilingual.

“My father, who is 84, grew up with Mãori as his fi rst language from birth, His grandmother, who raised him, could not speak English - he used to translate for her,” she says.

“Like a lot of older people who are native speakers, he lived through the era when you were caned at school for speaking Mãori .”

Meka wants to see as many people in the country have the chance to learn the language, but says that learning Mãori is not just about the language.

“It is about engaging with our culture, it is about understanding our roots, where we come from, the importance of being welcoming and looking after your fellow man,” Meka says.

“So, alongside Mãori language im-mersion, I made a conscious decision to take my two boys to Hawke’s Bay often so they would have a relationship with and respect for with their wider whanau.”

Meka says she would like to see the teaching of Mãori normalised in New Zealand if only to understand the pro-nunciation, and understand the beauty of the culture that means so much to her.

Maori Language important part of MP’s life

The Wainuiomata Summer Pools are by far the most popular attraction in Wainuiomata through summer.

Every weekend the sound of children can be heard all around the central part of the valley, as families take the time to cool off, from what has been some amazingly hot summers lately.

One of the major attractions is and always has been the hydro slide, which slides its way through the bush around the area.

This was opened just under 30 years ago, and has been a major hit ever since, with speeds being reached as high as 50km at some point in its history.

One of the fi rst trips down the slide was made by Wainuiomata’s only Mayor Harry Martin, who says that the trip was one hell of a ride.

Wainuiomata has the only full size outdoor Olympic Pool in the region,

and is regarded as one of the suburbs crown jewels.

It was opened during the big popula-tion boom in Wainuiomata, around the same time as the mall was as well.

It was paid for by money raised by the community, the fi rst fundraiser included pool committee members pushing a wheelbarrow over the hill as part of a 20 mile pub crawl back in 1958.

In the early 1960’s a member dressed as Santa slept at the mall for a week to raise money, and there is also stories of members hijacking buses and charging passengers 10 pound to continue on.

This was all done to raise 24000 pound for the pool, which in typical Wainuiomata spirit was raised, a similar fundraiser was had when $100,000 was needed to build the hydroslide.

How are you is E pahea ana koe?Now for some slightly more dif-

Dear Ed, In the 1970 they bought the Equal Pay Act in and it was supposed to lead to equal pay.

Helen Kelly, the President of the Council of the Combined Trade Unions, is leading a Campaign for Equality of women.

Helen has been diagnosed with cancer and fought for workers’ rights and all her life.

New Zealand is a country that since the Employment Contracts in 1991 has seen some workers lose equity because the award system was abolished which suited employers.

The most important issue was not voluntary unionism but the abolishment of the arbitration court by the Bolger government.

The state didn’t want to protect work-ers’ wages I think we should get behind Helen Kelly and make the Equal pay act work and create an egalitarian society and acknowledge the human rights of women.

Given we live in an area of market forces, should the Market take a humanitarian approach to wages?

As always the aim of Neighbourhood Support is to make our homes, streets and neighbourhoods safer places to live.

I have recently read reports about callers not being who they say they are. By taking simple measures we can help to protect ourselves. Here are some guidelines on steps to take when a stranger knocks on your door.

DO NOT open the door to strangers. If you don’t know who they are, and you are not expecting anyone, keep the door closed.

Never tell anyone that you are alone in the house.

If possible install a peephole in your door.

These are available for approximately $20 from your local hardware store, installation is additional.

Have a door chain fi tted, this allows you to open the door and speak to the caller.

These are reasonably priced at around $20.

Always request ID, so you can check that they are who they say they are.

If they are genuine, they will not mind complying.

Don’t be tricked into allowing someone you don’t know into your home.

If they ask to make a phone call, get the phone number and offer to make the call yourself, this way you can still help.

Never do business with strangers who ‘Cold Call’.

Cold calling is a technique whereby a salesperson contacts individuals who have not previously expressed an interest

in the products or services that are being offered.

Cold calling typically refers to phone calls but can also entail drop-in visits, such as with door-to-door sales people.

If you do have a caller, be very careful with the information you share.

By having a ‘friendly chat’, they are able to gain personal information such as who lives in the house with you, if you have a dog or whether you are home during the day? By asking the right questions they can identify vulnerable targets.

Never talk to strangers about your fi nancial affairs or give out your contact details.

Use tried and trusted trades people who have been recommended by family or friends.

Get several quotes to reduce the risk of being ‘ripped off’. If you are cheated, tell Police. You could help Police catch the criminal and stop other people from becoming victims.

If you suspect an older person is being taken advantage of; contact the Citizens Advice Bureau, Age Concern, your Community Constable or local Police for advice.

By forming a neighbourhood support group you will have contact numbers for neighbours in your street, these neigh-bours can be with you within minutes.

If you would like more information please get in touch with Dawn Mc-kinley, Wainuiomata Neighbourhood Support; 04 439 0515.

Who’s at the door?

My last meal on Earth would be...

One of my best holidays was...

When my husband, children and I went to Disneyland and Las Vegas a few years ago.

My guilty TV pleasure is...

I don’t really watch a lot of television. (Although I am a closet Coronation Street fan!).

What is one thing our readers would be surprised to know about you?

I lived in a house in the bush for two years with no electricity or telephone. It’s a long story!

A pot luck dinner with family and friends. Or anything I haven’t had to cook myself!

What would you spend your last $100 on?

A party.

What’s next on your wish list?

To travel around Europe, then visit Nottingham, England, the town I was born in.

Graham Norton, Billy Connolly, Richard Gere and de nitely Johnny Depp.

Who would you love to have a meal with?

I’m inspired by...

Positive, happy, hard working people.

The Wainuiomata High School 1st XV continued their domina-tion of Premier 3 college rugby over the weekend, beating New-lands College 29-12.

The game played in brilliant sunshine at the local High School, was a great showcase of the young talent that is in Wainuio-mata, as they easily accounted for the side that’s near the top of the table going into the game.

The result sees them enter the quarter fi nal stage of the com-petition on top, earning them the week off in the process, a great chance to fi x some small injuries to a couple of players.

As the score line suggests, Wainuiomata were the dominant side throughout the game, mov-ing the larger Newlands College side around the fi eld, going up by 22-0 with about 15 minutes to go before the visitors fi nally got on the score sheet.

In the regular season Wainuio-

mata has scored 241 points and only conceded 47, by far the best stats in both areas in the grade.

The Wainuiomata 2nd XV defaulted to Otaki, due to a lack of players turning up to training.

The Under 15’s drew with Otaki 5 leaving them in seventh on the 10 team table.

The team is at home against Paraparaumu next week at 11.30am.

The Under 65kg side went down heavily to St Pats Town, the 44-0 result keeps them winless this year.

They are also at home this week, hosting Scots College at 10am.

The Wainuiomata Girls 1st XV had a high scoring victory against Taita College winning 40-38.

The team is sitting fi fth on the table just behind next week’s opposition Wellington East Girls College, who they play on Thurs-day at 4pm at home in what is effectively a elimination game.

SLICING THROUGH: Wainuiomata High School fullback Michael Martin weaves his way through the Newlands College defence on route to scoring a try.

Wainuiomata’s Ulalei Netball club had a busy weekend, with two Regional Super League games and their normal Hutt Valley games to play.

The week started with a 59-37 loss to Naenae Blue, a tough loss as Ulalei played extremely well.

The Regional Super League Game on Sunday was not the same though as Ulalei were soundly defeated by Kapiti by 82-30.

The results were slightly better in the Hutt Valley league on Saturday, as Ulalei 1 put up a good fi ght, going down to the Upper Hutt Rams 68-51.

Ulalei 2 went down in a low scor-

ing game 12-31 to college old girls.Next week Ulalei plays Naenae

Collegians United Blue at 11am, Ulalei 2 plays Upper Hutt Maid-stone 4 at 1.30pm.

In High School Netball, Wai-nuiomata 1 went down to St Oran’s 2 30-28, next week they play Hutt Valley High School 3 at Taita College at 10am.

Wainuiomata 2 continued their amazing season with a 32-19 win over Heretaunga 2, this week they play Naenae 2 at 11am, also at Taita College.

Wainuiomata 3 beat Taita 4 27-20, next week they play Sacred Heart 15 at 3pm also at Taita.

Wainuiomata 4 destroyed Hutt Valley High School 13 by 40-19,

they now move their focus to play-ing Raphael House 1, with a 10am start at Sacred Heart College.

Wainuiomata 5 also had a huge win over a HVHS side, defeating HVHS 16 by 39-4, while Wainuio-mata 6 won by default.

Next week the two teams play each other at Sacred Heart begin-ning at 11am.

Busy weekend for Ulalei

The Wainuiomata Womens Rugby Team was a points scoring machine on Saturday, as they destroyed Johnsonville 188-0.

In what possibly is a club rugby record, the team was at some point scoring more than one try a minute against their op-position.

In all the team scored 30 tries which is defi nitely a club record for tries scored.

They are playing Poneke in the grades fi nal at 11.30am at home, which also dou-bles as a centurion games for four players Gail Ah-Hi, Acacia Claridge, Suzanne Yee and Alice Soper.

The side has been the form side in the club in the last couple of months, and the coaches and players alike should be ex-tremely proud of what they have achieved.

Player Alice Soper says that the result is down to Wellington Rugby changing the way they organise the division.

“We were put into division two, but we really were good enough to be in division one,” she says.

“We are always a better second round team, and these results are just showing that.”

Alice says that even though the result was a hefty one, the Johnsonville girls deserve credit for getting there and continuing on through the season.

“It is their fi rst year back after a few years not having a team, so full credit for them getting enough players together to play,” she says.

“We didn’t want to ease up however as we saw it as the best way for them to learn how to play the game.”

In other games the Premier Reserves also thumped Johnsonville 67-10, in a result that should secure them a semifi nal place.

They also have been playing brilliantly in the second half of the year, and show that the depth in the club is in a good place.

The Wainuiomata Colts game was won by default, meaning that they are also in line for a semifi nal place.

The under 85kg side went down in a close game to Paremata-Plimmerton 19-15.

188 point demolition

NO HARD FEELINGS: The Wainuiomata and Johnsonville Womens teams after the game, Wainuiomata have now set a new record score in club rugby after their 188-0 victory over the weekend.

Victory in BasketballWainuiomata defeated rivals St Bernards in what was an extremely entertaining Basketball match last week. The 57-55 victory keeps the team unbeaten for the year. The result pleases the coaches and means that the team has quali ed for the playo s as the top side. For match times please contact the school or check the college sport website.

All Blacks continue SuccessThe All Blacks scored a great win in Johannesburg, the 27-20 result meaning they are rst equal in this year’s Rugby Championship.More importantly however it builds more momentum towards the Rugby World Cup coming up in around 50 days.In regional rugby, the Wellington ITM Cup squad is set to be announced in the next week or so.The Wainuiomata News wishes the Wainuiomata players all the best for selection, hopefully there will be a couple in the team.

The Wainuiomata Lions Premier side has moved on to the next round of games thanks to a victory over University over the weekend.

The 36-22 victory sees them move forward to the preliminary fi nals to play Randwick, with a place in the Grand Final at Westpac Stadium up for grabs.

University started the game fast, scoring two well worked tries before Wainuiomata took control and started to dominate late in the second half.

Three tries saw them take the lead into the break, before the side once again came back from behind to record the victory.

Wainuiomata’s halves played very well, with Murphy Allbright taking control of the game at

various points to steer Wainuiomata round the park. The side should feel confi dent coming up against

Randwick, as they defeated them last time they played.

The game is scheduled to be played at 2.30pm next week.

In other games the Reserves were pounded by the Porirua Vikings 64-0, and are still in the bottom half of the ladder.

The team has the bye next week. The Indigenous Lions destroyed the Kapiti Coast

Bears 60-12 while the Fitzroy Lions pushed the Porirua City Phoenix all the way in a tough 36-34 loss.

Next week the two sides play each other at Wise Park in the fi nal round of regular season play.

DEFT TOUCH: Murphy Allbright accurately places a kick in between University defenders.

Wainuiomata Progresses

By Aaron Meredith

Wainuiomata AFC will be wondering where all their success has disappeared to, after not a single senior team managed to secure a win this weekend.

Wainuiomata’s top team went down 2-1 to the Stokes Valley Bobcats, while the capital four side went down 3-1 to Island Bay United Powershop.

The Wainuiomata Undertakers went down to Victoria University 2-0, making a disappointing weekend even worse for the club.

In Capital 11 at least the Roundballs got a point after their nil all draw with Wellington Olympic, Halfbaked were not as fortunate, going down to the Island Bay Marmossets 2-1.

That left it up to the girls on Sunday, but not even they could restore some pride for the club, going down 3-1 to Powerex Petone.

Next week all teams will be hoping for some better results, hopefully being able to get their seasons back on track.

The Capital two side plays Stop Out at Hutt Park at 12.30pm, The Capital Four side plays Victoria University at Anderson Park also at 12.30pm.

The Undertakers travel to Wakefi eld Park to play the Island Bay United Dreamers at 7.40pm on Monday.

In Capital 11 The Roundballs host Halfbaked at 2.30pm, the game is at Richard Prouse Park.

Disappointing weekend for Football Club

SPORTS in brief

By Aaron Meredith

The Wainuiomata Hockey Club is now sitting on top of the table after another convincing win on Sunday.

Playing in terrible conditions the side dominated their opponents YWCA 1 to record an impressive 4-1 result.

The rain and high winds at Fraser Park didn’t stop the girls playing well, and they are now look-ing forward to moving on in the season.

Returning after the School Holidays, the Wainuiomata High School team went down 4-2 to St Mary’s despite showing some good form throughout the game.

In Junior Hockey there were mixed results but still some good play by all involved.

The year 3 and 4 side went down 5-3 to Upper Hutt although Jaylyn Rawiri played extremely well and was awarded player of the day.

The year 5 and 6 side went down 7-1 to Upper Hutt, the team did play well together.

The year 7 and 8 side defeated Chilton St James, with Olivia Martin getting player of the day. Kazmia Morgan-Rako in hot pursuit of YWCA 2 defender.
