Continued from page 1On Friday the helicopter was

orgainised to take James to school, and every Wellesley College student and staff mem-ber were there to greet him.

Mark Frickleton piloted the helicopter and says he was happy to be involved.

“It is such a good cause,” he says.

James and his friends were picked up from Belmont and fl own to the school in Days Bay.

“The kids were so excited, they were beaming,” Mark says.

“We were lucky the weather was so nice as well, it was nice and calm, a lovely morning.”

The helicopter is based in Paraparaumu with Kapiti Heli-worx.

James father says that along with being a great cause, it is also a lot of fun planning out every way of getting to school.

“What other time would you be able to take a helicopter to

school,” he says.Mila and her mother Melanie

were present there and Melanie says that it is amazing that James has got behind the cause.

“For a young guy to take notice of her and spend so much time planning and doing this, it’s absolutely amazing,” she says.

“The determination he has had, and all the early morning starts, we are so grateful.”

Currently on the give a little page, Mila has raised nearly

$60,000 of the $100,000 needed for her surgery to help Mila with her Cerebral Palsy.

Donations have been coming from all around the country and Melanie says it is amazing how many people have been caring about the situation.

“It’s incredible how many peo-ple in New Zealand genuinely care about a child that they have never met,” she says.

“It show there is more good than bad in the country.”

Raising funds in style

By Aaron Meredith

The Easter Break is coming up this weekend, as well as School holidays at the same time, and if you are not going away over this time, you might want something to do.

Weather permitting, Wainuio-mata has plenty to do, bush walks are a dime a dozen over here, not many places in the country has as many as Wainuiomata does.

There are two main areas that most of the walks begin and end from, The Rimutaka Forest Park and the Wainuiomata Recreation Area.

Tracks down the forest park include the Five Mile Loop, The Big Bend Track and The Butcher Track.

At the recreation area, there is the Tana Umaga track as well as the Gums Loop Track, which is one of the most walked in the entire region.

The Rimutaka Forest Park is on the Coast Road about a 15 minute drive south of central Wainuiomata.

The Wainuiomata Recreation Area is on Crowther Road just off Moores Valley Road, about fi ve minutes from central Wai-nuiomata.

Also down the recreation area, there are multiple swimming holes that are safe to swim in, if the weather is hot enough.

Another unique thing is that Wainuiomata has its own seal colony on the coast.

These are about a 45 minute

Whats free in Wainuiomata these holidays

walk from the car park at the end of the Coast Road, and believe me, you will smell the seals before you see them.

If it is raining over the holidays, The Hutt is only a short bus ride

away, it is only $3.50 for an adult and $2 for a child.

Whatever the weather, and whatever you decide to do, enjoy the long weekend, and enjoy the school holidays, stay safe.

Wainuiomata elderly were having a blast on Thursday when they were learning to play the Ukulele.

The project has come to Wainuiomata after being suc-cessful over in Naenae and Lower Hutt as well.

The class once again proved popular as around 40 people from Wainuiomata turned up to take part in the fun and learn how to play.

Ruth O’Grady from Hutt Val-ley Community Arts helped organise the classes and says they are all so much fun.

“In Naenae we had eight register and over 40 turned up, and we have had the same here,” she says.

“The classes are all free and they are all fun.”

The plan is to have ongoing classes in both Wainuiomata and Naenae, but the team does need more funding to continue this.

Ruth says that the classes are all based on helping people both physically and mentally.

“It helps with hand move-ments, as well as music being very therapeutic,” she says.

“Also a Ukulele is very acces-

sible, and they are a lot of fun.”The plan is to have classes

run for eight weeks, although with the size of the classes they may split into two lots of four

weeks.“The group of people is large,

so it may be easier to split it, but we will see,” Ruth says.

The class is taught by Justin

Reed from the Hutt Ukulele Orchestra.

He is also from the Music Warehouse who provided all the ukulele’s.

Wainuiomata residents knew who to call on Sat-urday, as the movie Ghost-busters was fi nally shown in the valley.

The weather once again threatened to de rail the showing of the classic movie, but a backup plan of mov-ing the screening inside the Wainuiomata War Memorial Hall was well received.

The last attempt of screen-ing the movie was cancelled due to high winds, and popu-lar demand forced the Hutt City Council to reschedule.

“It is great to fi nally have it shown here, after it got cancelled last time,” says one member of the public Kelly Emmens

“It is a great way to spend a wet Saturday night with the children.”

The movie was also shown

at an earlier time, 7.30pm compared to last time when it was scheduled to be shown at 9pm.

“The start time is really good as well, 9pm was a little bit late for my children, but 7.30pm is a much better time,” Kelly says.

The free showing of the movie was part of the Hutt City Council’s Films by Star-light series which showed movies all over the Hutt over

the summer.Organisers were expecting

a large crowd thanks to the earlier viewing time, and they were not disappointed, with the hall full of people enjoying the show.

“It’s great to see something like this put on, I reckon that we should have this more often as it gives the com-munity something else to look forward to,” Kelly says.

After nearly 40 years of service, Wainuiomata Veterinary Clinic Owner, Dr Richard Pester is about to hang up his rubber gloves.

The long time vet has sold his clinic to Care Vets, a well-known veterinary service company that has clinics nationally.

Richard’s time in Wainuiomata has been unrivalled, being at the same clinic for 39 years.

“I graduated from Massey Univer-sity with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 1976.,” he says.

“Soon after, I got my fi rst job in the newly established Wainuiomata Vet Clinic, which was a branch of Lower Hutt Veterinary Services.”

Ten years later he bought the clinic, and it has been the only clinic he has worked in since.

The Wainuiomata Veterinary Clinic is the only vet clinic in the valley, but also has clients from over the other side of the hill.

“The practice has had some amaz-ing clients over the years. That’s the thing about being in the same place for so long,” he said.

“We have seen three generations of some families, We’ve watched the children of clients grow into adults and bring their pets through the practice, then had the grandchil-dren as clients, there’s something very special about these longstand-

ing relationships.” Throughout the years Richard

worked with many animals of dif-ferent shapes and sizes at the clinic.

“We turned our hand to anything really; pregnancy diagnosis in cattle, standard horse work – some sheep, alpacas and pigs,” Richard says.

“But the large animal work wasn’t so economical. In more recent years we have concentrated simply on companion animals.”

All of Richards current team have kept their roles with Care Vets, something that Richard says is very important.

“The current team is exceptional. The team will certainly provide

great continuity as Carevets takes ownership,” he said.

Richard now retired is looking forward to doing things he couldn’t do while running the clinic.

This includes travel, and having time to relax with family and friends.

“I have now got to retirement age. I’ve been in the same place for decades and there comes a time for change. Now is the right time for that change,” he says.

“I’ll miss the practice, but I can now do things I’ve planned to do for more than 20 years.”

Care Vets took over possession of the clinic at the beginning of March.

For those that are keen to have a go at running up one of the most well known peaks in the region, here is your chance. The Mount Lowry Challenge is coming up on Sunday May 17, and attracts up to 400 runners and walkers every year. This starts at Days Bay in Eastbourne and the course undu-lates between beech and manuka forests. Easter Bunny will be making a surprise visit on Saturday 4 April when Dowse Square is trans-formed into an Easter-themed playground.

From 10.30am-1.30pm, kids of all ages will be able to take part in the i-SITE Easter Egg Scavenger hunt where they’ll use a map to fi nd clues, win a chocolate Easter egg and go into the draw to win a share of $1000 worth of prizes.

There’ll be plenty of other free Easter excitement during the day including a bouncy castle, petting zoo, Zappo the Magician, sports games, face painting and the chance to help decorate the ginormous “Le Egg”.

Event organiser and i-SITE travel consultant Pai Isaako says the i-SITE Easter Egg Hunt is

the perfect way for families to start the school holidays.

“It’s going to be a great event. We have fun activities for k ids of a l l ages, plus gi-ant chess for t he pa rents , and it’s all free! As well as chocolate Easter eggs, we have four prize packs to give away that include family passes to at-tractions like bubble soc-cer at Hutt Indoor Petone, Staglands Wildlife Re-serve and Interislander ferry passes,” she says.

In case of wet weather, the Easter egg hunt and some activities will be held inside the i-SITE.

I’ve been in interested to hear some of the community’s main concerns and ideas for improvements for Wainuiomata that have been coming out of the community plan process.

These ideas and suggestions are going to be checked again with the community, and I would like to comment on a couple in this column:

You’ve supported the need for retirement accommodation. Last year Council decided to sell land in Hugh Sinclair Park to the Masonic Villages Charitable Trust, in order to build a retirement home, we now await their decision on whether to proceed.

There’s also a call to redesign public spaces of the strand and mall; the mall owner is looking at some major redevelopment of the shopping centre. Council continues to work positively with the owners to see improvements for Wainuiomata, and will do all it can to support their development becoming a reality.

Providing job opportunities, particularly for our youth is also at the forefront for this community. The Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs is based in Wainuiomata and having good success, of course more needs to be done and it takes a whole community to commit long-term to see this kind of change. I look forward to looking at ways we can improve opportunities for our young people.

You can keep up to date with the Wainuiomata development plan by viewing facebook.com/wainuiomata2035, online at huttcity.govt.nz/vibrant-wainuiomata or by contacting local Community

Board members and Council representatives.

The other document we are looking for comment on is the Long Term Plan 2015-2025.

This includes a proposal for a viewing platform at the top of Wainuiomata Hill, which would tie in nicely with the walk and cycle way the New Zealand Transport Authority is currently working on over the hill road.

Copies of the Long Term Plan consultation document were inserted in all copies of the Hutt News on Tuesday 31 March.

In addition copies can be picked up from the Wainuiomata and seven other Hutt City libraries, the Hutt City Council admin building at 531 High Street, or online at huttcity.govt.nz/LTP.

The community have until Thursday 30 April at 5pm to have their say- make sure your views are known.

Until next time,

Kind regards,

A word from Mayor Ray Wallace

The fl u doesn’t care how fi t, active or healthy you are. As well as those in poor physical health it can also infect and strike down even the healthiest of people. Infl uenza is easily transmitted and everyone is at risk of catching it.

The fl u carries the risk of severe illness. No matter how fi t, healthy or tough you are it may leave you unable to do just about anything, make you seriously ill and confi ne you to bed for a week.

It has a sudden onset and is accompanied by some (or all) of the following symptoms: fever and chills, cough, body aches and pains, fatigue and headache. Infl uenza can cause pneumonia and can act as a trigger that makes existing medical conditions worse. Every year thousands of New Zealanders need the attention of their doctor or are hospitalised with infl uenza; some die.

Prevention from the fl u starts with a strong immune system through good diet and rest. Pay attention to hygiene. When coughing, cover your mouth, use disposable tissues, and wash your hands. If you are unwell stay at home to prevent spreading the virus.

A fl u vaccination offers proven, effective immunity against the virus.

Immunisation is particularly important and is free for those at high risk from complications, and for those aged 65 or over. Talk to your doctor to see if you qualify.

‘We now offer the fl u vaccination at the pharmacy as well’ says Clive. ‘It’s quick, convenient, and no appointment is necessary.’

Make sure you give yourself – and your family – the best protection against infl uenza by doing all you can before winter strikes.

Wainuiomata Grey Power held its monthly meeting this week, and it was well attended as per normal.

Grey Power meets every month to help inform elderly people about what is going on in their community, get their point of view and to have a good chat with everyone.

The group always has a guest speaker every meeting, this time is was some-one talking about his trip to the USA and the contrasts he saw in the one country.

He showed slides of his trip including four different areas of the country that he visited including Oregon, New York, Nevada and California.

Councillor Margaret Willard was also present, letting everyone know what was happening in the council and what was happening with the Development Wai-nuiomata plan.

Grey Power is a vol-untary organisation that was founded 25 years ago by group of people that were protesting against sur-charge on superannua-tion at the time.

Grey Power aims to protect the wel-fare of older people, as well as many other things.

They have achieved a lot in their time including improving the quality of rest homes and securing better superannua-tion benefi ts.

The Wainuiomata Grey Power meets at the Life City Church in Parkway every month.

These meetings are on the fourth Wednesday of every month and are held at 1.30pm.

They are open to anyone over 50, if you are interested in attending or joining Grey Power please contact either Ken on 049346473 or Jane on 049719189.

KEEP CALM AND CALL PAUL

WHY WILL YOU WANT TO BUY AFTER 1 APRIL?

I had a coffee with my mate Andrew at the Co-operative Bank last week, and he told me

about some very exciting news.

Firstly he said,

• KiwiSaver and Housing New Zealand can assist people

wanting to buy their first home.

• After being a member of KiwiSaver for three years or more

you can apply for a First Home Withdrawal from your KiwiSaver

account and you may be eligible for a First Home Subsidy from

Housing New Zealand.

I said that’s not new, he told me to keep listening...

On 1 April 2015, the current KiwiSaver First Home Deposit

Subsidy will be replaced with the KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant.

• Like the KiwiSaver First Home Deposit Subsidy, the KiwiSaver

HomeStart Grant will provide eligible first home buyers with a

grant of up to $5,000 for individuals and up to $10,000 for

couples to put towards a deposit for an existing home. In

addition, the new KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant will also provide

eligible first home buyers with a grant of up to $10,000 for

individuals and up to $20,000 for couples to help with the

costs of building or purchasing a brand new home.

Co-operative Bank•s Lower Hutt Branch Manager, Andrew

Brown, believes these changes coupled with higher Welcome

Home Loan and KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant house price limits

will make buying a first home more achievable for many of his

customers.

And I totally agree with him!

Now this means when April rolls around, there will be a good

number of new cashed up first home buyers and buliders.

So if you are thinking of selling your home, or have a piece of

land that is ready for a new build, you really need to pick up the

phone and let me help you get ready to meet the market head

on.

Or if you•re a buyer that needs some help, my advice is always

the same,

“‘‘

Sports with Aaron Meredith

The Cricket World Cup fi nal ended up being a one sided affair, The Black Caps just could not compete against the fi red up Australians.

I am not saying that we should be disap-pointed that we lost, we got further than we ever have before, and we should feel proud.

Australia deserved to win, they outplayed us from ball one to when the final runs were hit.

One thing has been bothering me ever since then though, it is the fact that the Aussies seem to think that they have to bully their way through teams.

Listening to the radio this morning, I heard what can only be described as disgusting.

Australian wicket keeper Brad Haddin says the way the Australians acted after every wicket was all about pay back for what we did while the Aussies were in Auckland.

“You know what? They deserved it, they were that nice to us in New Zealand and we were that uncomfortable,” he says.

So your response to us being gracious hosts is to be utterly rude, disrespect our players, and rub it in every time you guys got a wicket.

His main target was Grant Elliot, although seeing him clap in the face of Martin Guptill once he got out is hardly a good sight either.

The ICC says that they wanted to get sledging out of the game, if they were true to their word there has to be some sort of punishment for this.

I am not saying strip Australia of the title, we don’t want that, what I am suggesting is stripping Haddin of his world cup winner’s medal.

Someone that acts like a 10 year old on a world stage, effectively throwing a tantrum after he felt he was uncomfortable when we were nice to them in New Zealand doesn’t deserve to be called a winner.

If Australians are proud of their team for winning, that’s fi ne, I would be too, but I hope that they are not proud of the way the act.

If they are, the entire country needs to look in the mirror because they would be the fi rst ones to cry if the All Blacks act like that when we destroy them in the Rugby World Cup.

Let’s be the bigger people, let’s not be a Haddin, let’s not be one of them, let’s be gracious, let’s be proud, let us be New Zealanders.

Australia may have won, but show no grace

A great showing of togetherness and inclusiveness was shown at the TriAbil-ity Triathlon last week.

“We started together, we end together,” was the call as team members of the Wainuiomata Kaumatua Group awaited their final member, Awhi Milner, to complete the fi nal section of the Tri-Ability Triathlon.

The team then crossed the fi nish line at the same time and received their medals as a team.

The HVDRT TriAbility Triathlon took place on Saturday March 21 is an event that supports people with various degrees of physical, intellectual, developmental, neurological and sensory abilities.

The an event run by the Lower Hutt organisation, the Hutt Valley Disabled Resources Trust (HVDRT).

However, this is not an event just for disabled people, but rather an event for all abilities and a chance to compete side-by-side as part of a larger social change campaign.

Event manager, Charlie Holland, was especially pleased with the spectrum of local participants that entered this year.

“We had competitors from Wainuio-mata High School, Hutt City Council, Mayor Ray Wallace, and two wonderful teams from Wainuiomata Kaumatua Support Group,” she says

“Wainuiomata really showed how pro-active they are towards inclusive communities.”

Positive family involvement was also

evident on the day with parents, aunts and uncles volunteering with their young ones as they cheered on the competitors.

Moana Kuma from Wainuiomata com-pleted the cycling section with her baby in a baby-buggy attached to her bike.

However one of the highlights had to be the return of Mayor Ray Wallace, supporting and competing as the cyclist for ‘Team Tri-Again’ with HVDRT CEO Susan Gray and HVDRT client, Donna Wotton.

Mayor Wallace triumphantly crossed the fi nish line together with his team to receive his fi nishers-medal.

Shortly after the Mayor was then able to award each member of the Wainuiomata Kaumatuatua teams with their medals as they crossed the fi nish line, making it a very emotional moment.
