INSIDE THE DAUGHTERHOOD.

Natasha Fennell and Róisín Ingle chat to Orla Shanaghy about how their book came together and the impact it has had on those it has touched.

Friday 8th May | 7:00 pm - 8:00 pmCentral Library - Ground Floor | Free

When Natasha Fennell’s mother was diagnosed with a progressive illness, her life came to a standstill. She wondered how she would cope when her mother was gone and whether she had been a good enough daughter. After a call out to daughters in Róisín Ingle’s weekly Irish Times column, The Daughterhood co-writer, Natasha and Róisín quickly learned that other daughters had similar fears and had never spoken about them before.

An impromptu, informal self-help club, The Daughterhood, was formed – albeit one that involved good food and wine – as once a month a group of women would come together to help each other navigate one of the most complex, frustrating and joyous relationships of their lives. The Daughterhood is the funny, poignant, and occasionally heart-breaking story that will strike a chord with daughters (and their mothers) everywhere. Natasha and Róisín discuss with Orla Shanaghy their path to publication and how this book has impacted on both them and those around them.

The unforgettable story of how one woman fought to live – and die – on her own terms. But behind the Multiple Sclerosis sufferer’s brave fight lay a remarkable life story known to few. From her young years growing up in Donegal, as she struggled to keep her family together after her mother left, to her battle to keep her own baby – born when Marie was still a teenager – to her later quest for education and self-betterment against the odds, An Act of Love is an unforgettable story of ambition, of sorrow, and of life lived to the full. In it, she also describes coming to terms with MS and the ordeal of her later court case. Completed just before Marie’s death in late 2013, most of all, this is a story of the power of abiding love.Dave Kenny talks to ghost writer Sue Leonard and Marie’s daughter Corrinna about how the book came about, Marie’s remarkable story and her lasting impact.

OLD FLOUR MILLS BY DAVID MURPHY.

Fri 1st May - Sun 31st MayGarter Lane Arts Centre - FOH Space, kindly sponsored by AIB, Waterford | Free

David explains; “I have recently taken on a personal project to photograph the ‘Old Flour Mills’ on the docks in Waterford. The reason I took on this project was to capture the iconic memory of these old towers which are to be knocked soon. I myself have grown up in Waterford all my life. These towers for me represent Waterford as it was, (a hardworking city), and although the towers no longer represent that, I feel for me that they are a significant part of the history of the city. Waterford has been hit hard lately as you well know, and maybe it will take something significant like the destruction of one of our most iconic landmarks to get the fire

lighting again. When I arrive back from trips to Dublin and Kilkenny the first thing I see are these towers and it will be strange to imagine them not being there in the not so distant future.”
