Examiner's Report

Q1.

Q2 was a multiple choice task and targeted Grade F. The majority of students chose the correct answers in parts Q2(iii) and Q2(iv) although it was clear that hace viento in Q2(i) and hay niebla in Q2(ii) were not widely known by many thus producing incorrect responses.

Q2.

Question 2 was a matching task. The majority of candidates were able to correctly identify all items although autocar (ii), coche (iii) and andando (iv) were difficult for some.

Q3.

This question was a multiple choice task and targeted Grade F. The majority of candidates correctly chose the correct answers in parts (ii) and (iii) although it was clear that una habitación individual para una noche in (i) and una habitación con ducha in (iv) were not commonly known by many thus producing incorrect answers.

Q4.

This question was a matching task with icons. Candidates were required to match Catalina's comments about her holiday with the places to which she referred. Whilst candidates were generally able to respond appropriately to the task set, the following references were problematic to some (ii) parque central, (iii) museo, (iv) ir de compras.

Q5.

This question targeted Grade C and the task type required candidates to listen to Pastora talking about her holiday. The question was a good discriminator as the performance of Higher Level candidates far surpassed that of the weaker candidates. Almost all Higher Level candidates scored 3 to 4 marks whereas at Foundation Level candidates tended to score 2 marks. Miscomprehension of creo que los edificos antiguos son una maravilla, no necesitamos llevar sudadera, mi cuarto daba a la carretera and siempre había demasiada gente meant that many Foundation candidates were not able to score the marks.

Q6.

This question targeted Grade C and the task type required candidates to listen to some friends discussing the local museum. The question discriminated well as the performance of Higher Level candidates far surpassed that of the weaker candidates. Overall almost all Higher Level candidates correctly answered (i)  and (iii)  and 75% scored correctly in (ii)  and (iv). At Foundation Level however, just over half the candidates achieved the marks in (ii)  and (iv). Failure to understand se aprende mucho en las visitas guiadas, me inquieta que mucha gente no venga al museo porque las entradas son muy caras prevented many Foundation candidates from accessing the marks.

Q7.

(crossover question)

This multiple choice question targeting Grade C required candidates to listen to a short dialogue taking place at a train station. There was a marked difference in performance between Foundation Level and Higher Level candidates. At Higher Level practically all candidates scored the maximum 4 marks for this question with a small number obtaining 3 marks whereas Foundation candidates had problems understanding prefiero viajar por la tarde, ida y vuelta, al lado de la ventana and setenta y cinco euros thus failing to score marks.

Q8.

This question targeting Grade C required candidates to fill in a form in English. This question was done well by most candidates although some had problems identifying the correct day. Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday commonly appeared in (a). It would seem that a high proportion of candidates were not able to target the correct time in (b) as answers given included: 7.30, 10.30, 12, 8, half past, morning and noon amongst others. The main difficulty lay in (c) as very few candidates correctly understood ayuntamiento. Incorrect answers included: in front of the library, outside the hotel, opposite the shop, in the town centre, down the road, next to the tourist office and in front of the train. There were not many difficulties with (d) apart from some interpretations such as shopping centre, landmarks, the church, monuments and swimming pool.

Q9.

This question tested candidates' ability to recognise opinions and details from a longer extract of dialogue which contained familiar language in a less familiar context. This was based on a dialogue which took place in a hotel relating to booking details for a holiday in Spain. This question proved to be quite demanding for some candidates. Answers (b) and (c) were more successfully achieved than items (f) and (g). In item (f) candidates perhaps failed to equate sólo come verduras with being a vegetarian and in (g) many candidates simply failed to recognise the verb alquilar.

Q10.

Candidates had to listen to some friends discussing adventure holidays and giving their opinions about them. By and large the question was answered quite well although conocer a gente nueva me interesa mucho in (ii) and pues para mí son demasiado caras in (iii) proved to be problematic for some candidates.

Q11.

Question 3 required candidates to listen to two short dialogues in which some friends were discussing their holidays and to select items referred to in the conversations from a number of listed possibilities. Most candidates scored 2 of the 4 marks available for this question. Difficulties mainly encountered were the matching of the heard albergue juvenil and baratísimo with the given prompts accommodation and cost. With Javier’s questions some candidates had a problem matching piscina climatizada with facilities.

Q12.

Question 9 required the candidates to identify the correct activity and the reason for choice in two short dialogues. They were required to indicate their understanding by noting single word answers in English in a text box. Most candidates correctly wrote their answers in English although some answers were written in Spanish and therefore failed to score the allocated marks. In part (a) many candidates were able to identify TV as the activity in section (i) but were unable to give a correct reason in section (ii) favourite programme. In part (b) whilst most candidates were able to identify disco as the activity in section (i) many failed to recognise the reason in section (ii) as celebrating a birthday.
