Although this book has been around for some time, it is something that could be extremely helpful for those who are involved in preparing and conducting Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the Sunday liturgy. It would also be useful for catechists or teachers who work with a liturgical catechesis approach (focusing on the Sunday readings to prepare for the Sunday liturgy each week). The blurb on the back of the book indicates that it is for the purpose of “preparing for the Sunday liturgy”.

Those involved in Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLW) know how difficult it can be to help the children celebrate and break-open the Word of God. This book offers the opportunity for children to engage with the Gospel texts creatively, with the intention of greater understanding, during Children’s Liturgy of the Word.

1. There is a brief introductory section that helps the reader understand how the book might be used. One of the tasks suggested is the making of banners. One suggestion of a cumulative banner that adds a symbol of the reading each week, is a great way to continue to familiarisechildren with their insights into the text. The CLW leaders might consider their own set of symbols that the children can collect or build into a banner that is presented each week to the priest celebrant as an indication of their experience with the gospel. If a leader has difficulty thinking of the symbols, there is one provided for each weekly reading.

2. The book is clearly marked for each year: Cycles A, B and C.

3. Each week has the Sunday clearly marked, indicating the liturgical season. There is a focus identified that will help the leader quickly contextualise the reading.

4. Each Sunday outline is broken into four sections: Reflecting, Talking, Doing and Praying. They offer a guide to understanding the Sunday reading.

This resource would be a valuable help for Children’s Liturgy of the Word leaders planning the sessions each week. The useful questions can be adapted for your own parish context to trigger relevant discussion and sharing.

However you look at this book, it would be a useful resource for teachers, catechists and Children’s liturgy of the Word leaders. It offers considerable support and suggestions that will prove to be very useful.
