Measure -‐ Why footprin0ng?
Imagine running a company without a financial budget
Managing corporate sustainability without an environmental footprint presents the same problems.
• Where do we start? • What do we do? • How do things connect?
13
Measure -‐ how to measure the footprints?
• Guideline on ISO standard developed by Quan0s (available end 2015)
• Keep-‐updated on methodological developments: hbp://www.wulca-‐waterlca.org/
ISO 14046 –defines the requirements, guidelines and principles, but does not define a methodology to assess a water footprint. Further documents:
• ISO TR 14073 -‐ Working draf 4

Beyond Water footprin0ng: Full Life Cycle Assessment
The benefits include: • Calculated Product carbon footprint of cement
• Screening of impacts related to land use change (biodiversity & ecosystem services)
• Quan%fica%on of poten%al human health impacts (toxic and carcinogenic substances, respiratory effects, etc.).
• Increased credibility, since a complete set of indicators is assessed and not only impacts related to water.
Small addi0onal workload is required in
the inventory part (collec%on of slightly
more data) and impact assessment
(impacts on Human Health, Ecosystem
Quality and Climate Change).

Cer0fica0on & Verifica0on
No cer0fica0on stamp from ISO, but several private organiza%ons offer cer%fica%on / verifica%on services.
Cer%fying of ISO 14046 compliance does not mean you are performing well or that you reduced your impact.

Water footprin0ng is not the answer for every ques0ons related to sustainability!
