PowerEdge VRTX shared storage FAQHow do you manage and provision your shared storage in PowerEdge VRTX ?
All of the management for the shared storage is done in the Chassis Management
Controller (CMC). OMSS will see the storage adaptor but can not manage it.
How are events in Shared Storage reported?
They are NOT visible to the OS on a server but come from the CMC.
How do I update my Shared Storage?
You must use CMC to update it.
How can I configure my Shared Storage?
You can use the CMC GUI, racadm, or WSMAN interfaces.
Can Virtual Disks be assigned to multiple blades?
YES, but they need to be part of Windows Failover Cluster or formatted as VMware’s
VMFS.
If I don’t add the server to the cluster – What can happen? (shared storage)
You can cause data-corruption by over-writing your data because it is not aware that two
or more system are writing to the same Virtual Disk.
Can CMC manage my storage local to the server node?
No, You will need iDRAC7 / LC or OMSA / OMSS to do it.

Hint & Tips
1) PCIe slots 1-8 are a shared nothing resource, these slots have a one to one mapping from slot to server and can not be shared
2) You can only installed cards in a assigned slot if the server owning that slot is powered down
3) PCIe slot 1-8 DO NOT support hot plug, only warm plug
4) The Perc 8 socket does support hot plug
5) The Perc 8 socket and card does support sharing.
PCIe Card options
The following PCIe cards will be supported on VRTX at launch:
• AMD FirePro W7000
• 6Gb/s SAS HBA (low profile and full height)
• Broadcom Dual Port 1Gb (low profile and full height)

PowerEdge VRTX I/O FAQ
How do you make a PCIe slot available to a server node in PowerEdge VRTX ?
The assignments are made via the Chassis Management Controller (CMC)
How do I manage adapters in the PCIe slots?
Once mapped to a server via the CMC management of the adapter is done from that
server’s iDRAC7 or OpenManage Server Administrator
Are there best practices to maximize the performance of PCIe adapters?
A whitepaper will be available at launch
PowerEdge VRTXNetworking

VRTX CMC – FAQ
• Is the CMC code for VRTX the same as M1000e?– Built off of the same code base but unique firmware images for VRTX, M1000e
– The VRTX code was built off of the 4.1 version so M1000e features delivered after that won’t
be picked up until a future Plasma release
• What are the features new for VRTX?– Shared storage and PCIe mapping features
– More informative error messages with more options for selecting resulting alerts
– Express CMC license option for single site SMB customers that lowers price at the expense of
enterprise features. Details on next slide
– Express CMC independent of iDRAC7 Express/Enterprise option for servers
• Notable features of M1000e not present in VRTX @ RTS– Chassis configuration profile propagation (new 4.3)
– Boot order capture in BIOS profile (new 4.3)
– Save & Restore of BIOS profiles to local hard drive (new 4.3)
– All settings blade configuration capture and replication (new 4.4)
– Slot based assignment of blade configuration profile, i.e. settings are applied when the blade is
inserted (new 4.4)
– Check for default credentials with warning to user
• Are a mixture of VRTX and M1000e supported in multi-chassis?– No, all members of a cluster must match the lead chassis
• What management is possible across the 9 chassis in multi-chassis?– Monitoring and inventory are available for multi-chassis
– 1:Many BIOS/FW update and BIOS configuration replication are within a chassis only
Features not licensed by reduced-cost Express CMC
Feature Description
Redundant CMC Second chassis management controller (CMC) for improved availability
Blade update Enables updates to components on a blade/disables the ability
Remote syslog Ability for the CMC to log messages to a remote syslog service.
Active Directory and LDAP Active Directory and LDAP for login authentication
PK Authentication PK Authentication for SSH
Single Sign-on Single Sign-On for LDAP. Requires Active Directory/LDAP feature to be enabled.
This is the Integrated Windows Authentication feature using OS logon credentials
and not the simple token based local single sign on.
Two-Factor Authentication Two-Factor Authentication with smartcards. Requires Active Directory/LDAP
Remote File share Remote File Share (RFS) option maps a file from a NFS/CIFS share on the network
to one or more blades through the iDRAC to deploy or update an operating system.
When connected, the remote file is accessible as if it is on the local system. When
using the CMC interface, the CMC passes the NFS/CIFS credentials to iDRAC to
initiate RFS.
Advanced Configuration Enables server node BIOS configuration capture & 1-to-many config. replication
Advanced Power Management Enclosure level power capping.
Chassis grouping Enables/disables the ability to manage multiple chassis from a single CMC. This
needs to be licensed on both the master and the member devices.
Enclosure level backup Enables/disables the ability to perform backup of CMC settings. Restore is
available by default
Flex Address Flex Addresses can be used. Requires the installation of an SD card which
contains the flex addresses
Dynamic Power Supply
Engagement
Ability to put power supply into a "hot spare" mode for greater power efficiency
Slot and Shared Storage
assignment (VRTX specific)
Enables/disables the ability to assign PCI slots and virtual functions(shared
storage) to a specific blade. When disabled, the CMC will have a fixed assignment
of PCI slots to blades.
