Wednesday Window Edition 2023rd July 2014 Naumai haere mai te tenei o te kura! Naumai haere mai te wiki o te Reo Maori 2014 Rāhina 21 – Rātapu 27 Hōngongoi Wāhanga 3, wiki 1 Hei whakanui i Te Rā o te Reo Māori tēnei Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori 2013, tenei Te taura Whiri i te Reo Maori te whakapuaki nei ki te ao te tāhuhu mō Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2014 To mark Maori Language week Te taura whiri i te Reo Maori has announced the theme of TE KUPU o te WIKI, or word of the week. We’d like to ask you all to join us over the next year in working on our Reo together, using this format. Later in this newsletter you also will find the first of the kupu, as well as a community workshop offer, designed by the community for the community and warmly supported by the Waldorf School’s Trust and aimed in this same direction. ********************************************************************************************* Welcome Back to term 3, a term in which the pace of life picks up dramatically, a term which starts out in some of the coldest weather of the year gets better and better and ends with a splash with the beautiful Spring Festival. Between now and then, as I look at the staffroom calendar I note that there is much to interest and engage us all. By the time you read this, the parent reporting day, following up on the school reports given out at the end of term 2, will be done and dusted. In most cases these individual interviews replace the usual termly Parent Evening schedule. Kindergarten parent evenings will go ahead as usual but will be additionally supported by the Raphael Series which runs throughout term 3 and which offers us all the chance to learn more about the education you are choosing for your children. Importantly, this series of workshops and lectures offers you opportunities to begin to make, to grow or to maintain the special character relationship that is the legal basis and requirement for your children’s enrolment in the school. Do watch the newsletter, the blackboards and the website for the details of this series. A dedicated Special Character meeting is also scheduled for Wednesday August 6 at 1.30 pm. For those of you who have children turning six in the next months, attendance at one of these meetings is necessary for your child’s enrolment into the school to proceed, so please do consider ahead of time whether this is a time that suits. More dates will occur through the year but if there is some difficulty for you, please do call the office. In addition a class meeting for the parents of all children who turn 6 in 2014 is scheduled for Thursday August 14 at 7pm. This is the first of two parent meetings we hold each year as an introduction to life over the kindergarten fence. In the school, term 3 is the term for class plays so do note these times too and get them in your calendar now. With everyone so busy it seems we all need to work harder at our planning and scheduling so please try and do your bit. On that note I would remind you that there are two parent liaison meetings in weeks 2 and 3. The first is a kindergarten one, on Wednesday July 30 at 9.15am followed by a school one the following week, Aug 6 at 9.15 also. Some of you may remember from past newsletters that we are focusing strongly on improving our communication this year. It’s one of the school’s annual plan goals and as we move on through the year we’d like to check in with you as to how we are doing. You can expect a parent survey this term, which will allow us to check in with you as to how we are doing in a variety of domains. Please take the opportunity to feed in your experiences and thoughts. As our community numbers grow, the more informal style of communication and catching up we’ve enjoyed in the past has become not just less effective but also impossible, so we’ve been concentrating on ways get all the necessary messages to everyone, focusing on very clear expectations and channels. This is part of the work that David Garb started in his community development day earlier in the year. The creation of a parent mandate, and the opportunity to decide how parents can communicate effectively with staff, will be the subject of his next workshop with you on September 13 th . We will publish this date again, but it’s probably not a bad idea to diary it now Finally, this term we welcome Class 4 teacher Jo back from her travels in Great Britain and are very happy to have Maria Mellino with us once again. Maria is relieving initially in Class 2 for Sheryl who is away on a learning support conference and we welcome them both back. Kia Ora whanau Thanks to all of you that have expressed interest in learning some Te Reo Maori (Maori language), congratulations! The school has agreed to support this initiative and so from the 12th August we will be offering the following Te Reo night classes: What: Adult Maori language course Where: The ‘whare’ at school When: The 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month i.e. 12 and 26th August Time: 6-7:30pm Cost: Gold coin ‘koha’ (this will go in a ‘kitty’ to support related activities e.g. guest speakers, resources etc.) Rukuwai will be the main Te Reo teacher and I’ll assist. Primarily the focus will be on teaching you what your children are learning so you can tautoko (support) them in the learning of Te Ao Maori within the school (of which the teachers are doing a great job), and then we’ll build from there. If you have older children at the school feel free to bring them along. You’ve all asked for this, so I’m really confident you’ll get in and support this initiative. It will be fun and engaging and another opportunity to draw our school community even closer than what it already is. Big thanks to Rika for putting together the initial proposal, Rukuwai for agreeing to be the mail kaiako (tutor) and of course Mary and the school for supporting this initiative. If interested please leave your name with Cathy at the office (so we have an idea of numbers) Any queries give me a call on 0212457600 Ellis Mauri Ora!

From the pledges corner Today we have sent out overviews for your school donations for this year. Thank you all who are making regular contributions or have already paid the full recommended amount. We will no longer send you statements if you have paid the full amount. Please do check and let us know if you think we have missed any payments you have made. It’s also a great chance to check your address. The overview is as of 30th June - if your contributions should cover half of the yearly donation. Send any queries to [email protected] Kind regards Marlis

For those of you who wonder whether Waldorf students are disadvantaged in later years by the lack of information and communication technology in their early school lives, here’s a wee story…. Tauranga Waldorf School graduate Oliver Langdon has proved the point that Steiner children can

adapt and be proficient in the world of technology. Ollie’s YouTube entertainment account recently reached 20,000

followers. It just goes to show!

FOR SALE Fans, several column oil heaters & two printers that have the necessary electrical testing completed but we no longer use. Items available to view in the Cowshed see Cathy in the office to make an offer.

SPORTS RESOURCE FUNDING The 'old team' of Jackie and Jen are retiring from this cause. We need to quickly find 2 or 3 keen folk to keep sports funding applications rolling. This helps ensure we can continue to replace our uniforms, balls, hoops, nets etc. It is vital this support continues. Please give me a call if you are interested. Jen 5444883
