From the Desk of Mr. Hegedus
It’s been another fantastic start to our Extended School Year (ESY) program which began here at the Newgrange School on July 1st. The children and the staff have been hard at work from day one and everyone is well on their way to a summer that will produce high level learning and outstanding teaching and instruction. Over the course of the days and weeks ahead and right up until the time that our classes conclude on August 12th, the students will continue to focus on the reading, writing and math skills which are the core elements of our curriculum. In addition, the teachers will also be providing instruction in Science, Social Studies and the Humanities as part of the daily classroom schedule. Learning about Social Skills, an area that has become an increasingly important part of our program, is also being taught through the use of social thinking activities, social stories and perspective taking lessons. It has been absolutely amazing to see the incredible amount of work that each of our classes has accomplished in such a short period of time. We’re looking forward to helping the children build and maintain a solid and lasting foundation to their skill levels throughout the remainder of the summer. Mad Science Assembly!! On Tuesday, July 19th, we’ve scheduled a special assembly for the students and the teachers, which will feature the “Mad Scientist.” The children will have the opportunity to witness a foggy dry ice storm, float on a Mad Scientist hovercraft, watch a foam factory at work, make magic mud, and so much more. The Mad Scientist assembly is a truly hands on experience and we’re certainly looking forward to a morning of educational fun and entertainment. All School Bowling Trip!! We’ve scheduled an all school bowling trip to Colonial Bowling Lanes located in Lawrenceville on Friday, July 29th. We will be leaving Newgrange for the trip at approximately 9:45am and returning to the school at approximately 12:00 noon. Please note that the concession stand will be open to purchase a variety of snacks, drinks and other food items. If you prefer, you may send your child with a lunch or a snack that they normally eat and they can have it when they return to school. Please be reminded that students must have a signed permission slip in order to participate in this event. We thank you if you’ve already returned a signed form for your child. In the event that you did not receive a permission slip, we have attached another form for you to sign and return to school. Thank you for your help. If you have any questions, please call the office. Attached, please see the flyer that contains information about the Mercer County 4-‐H Fair. The Fair has been scheduled this year for Saturday, July 30th and Sunday July 31st. There will be livestock shows, hayrides, pony rides and plenty of shows and activities for the families to enjoy. For more information please call the numbers on the flyer or visit the website at Howell Living History Farm. In closing, have a wonderful weekend and try to enjoy some special time with family, friends and loved ones.

Ms. Genna, Mrs. Allen and Miss Laura Happy Summer! OT and Speech are happy to be back over ESY. Ms. Genna, MS OTR/L; Mrs. Allen, MA CCC-‐SLP; and Miss Laura, Speech Intern, will be at ESY Monday-‐Thursday each week. We wrapped up the end of the school year with our Speech and OT interns working on a community project with the elementary and middle school students. The students participated in learning about the Hamilton Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, and making “Adopt Me” bandanas for the animals to wear. The animal shelter sent everyone a lovely thank you letter, highlighting how thoughtful the students were with their donation! During first two weeks of ESY, OT and Speech are focusing on introducing our theme for the summer: The 2016 Summer Olympics. Enjoy the warm weather!
Ms. Brana And Mrs. Camins
Happy Summer! We are off to a great start this summer. Our summer theme this year is the Olympics. Language Arts: Our students are happy to be reading Magic Tree House: The Hour of the Olympics by Mary Pope Osborne. We will be tying our Language Arts lesson into our Social Studies lessons where the students will be exploring the 2016 Summer Olympics that are taking place in Brazil as well as studying when and where the Olympics began. Science: This summer we will be reviewing the 5 senses and the human body. On Fridays during Science we will be cooking. These Friday classes will incorporate math, science and social studies. We will be choosing foods from Greece and Brazil that are kid friendly and utilizing our math skills to prepare our special treats.
Ms. Brana O.G. – Our class this summer will consist of reviewing concepts taught during our regular school year with a concentration on increasing our sight words repertoire. Math -‐ Our class will continue with Otter Creek this summer 3 days a week. Currently we are reviewing place value, hundreds, tens and ones. Mrs. Camins O.G. – This summer we will review vowel sounds, consonant sounds, blends and sight words. We will use worksheets, interactive computer programs and games to present the material. Math – In math, the first unit we are covering is calendar skills. Students will review calendar facts and how to spell the days of the week and the months of the year. We are also doing calendar math, practical skills necessary to read and use a calendar.
Mrs. Haines and Mrs. Grande “How do you rid the Earth of humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.” ― Rick Yancey, The 5th Wave This summer has visiting a world that’s been conquered by mysterious aliens called “The Others.” We are reading 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, where our present-‐day heroine will learn more about survival and humanity than she ever imagined. In Social Studies and Science, we are learning about all the science and history of our favorite foods. We’ve examined chocolate and will be working with yeast over the next two weeks. Our class loves to cook (and eat!). We’ve made chocolate chip cookies and experimented with two different recipes. We are making bread this week, and pizza dough next week! Math and Reading have kept us on our toes, continuing the work of the school year. We are having a great time learning this summer!

Mrs. Bruder
Our homeroom is "Blasting Off" this summer! In language arts, we are reading the very engaging novel, Space Case, which combines a mystery with a glimpse of how life might be like if we were to live on a Moon base. To tie in with this theme, we have been focusing on some Moon related science and social studies lessons including exploring gravity, rocks and minerals -‐ would the same kind of rocks and minerals be present on the Earth and on the Moon? We have discussed some ancient Greek astronomers and Copernicus. As we move through the summer, we will also be doing some engineering activities and learning about things that were developed as a result of the NASA Moon Missions. No, Tang orange drink is NOT one of them! In math, we have been working on practicing some calculations and geometry concepts. The plan is to move into fractions and then on to integers as ESY progresses. In OG/Reading, we have been focusing on some sounds and affixes. Everyone has been reading and spelling the word lists very well. Our homeroom has been participating in some great social skills lessons and activities as well. Our first area of focus is on listening skills. We have accomplished many things already and are looking forward to the various learning experiences to come as ESY continues.
Dr. Geri Silver Welcome to ESY! I hope everyone is having a great summer and enjoying the warm weather. This year, my homeroom is a middle school class, grades 7-‐8, and they will be with me for Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies classes. I am happy to say that Mrs. Lippman will be working with us in all of those classes. In Language Arts, we will be reading the book, Holes, by Louis Sachar. During the course of the summer, the students will explore such topics as character development, cause and effect, conflict, story themes, and of course, vocabulary. We will be keeping a journal of all the work that we do, which will be coming home at the end of ESY. Our Social Studies curriculum will be derived directly from the topics in the book; we will be addressing discrimination and the Jim Crow laws in the South, and learning about the important figures that helped bring about the end of segregation, such as Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges. In Science, we will be learning about chemical reactions in general, and about rusting metal in particular. Students will practice their engineering skills as they research, plan, and develop protocols to help determine the best way to remove tarnish from copper pennies. Extension activities are planned to determine the effectiveness of the students’ solutions on other types of metals. Finally, in Math, I am reviewing skills from last year and previewing skills for next year with many of the high school students. I am working with students taking Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-‐Calculus on a one-‐to-‐one basis so that they can continue to make progress during the course of ESY. I am looking forward to a fun and productive summer. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Visualizing & Verbalizing -‐ Our class has been working on their listening comprehension, critical thinking and writing skills. So far everyone has done very well. We listen to a short story, visualize what the story is about, talk about it and then write a summary. We also do some other activities to enhance these skills. Stay tuned! And Stay cool!
Ms. Flynn and Ms. Favocci
We are really digging summer in room 109! Our class novel is Holes by Louis Sachar. This is the coming of age adolescent novel is of the story of Stanley Yelnats. A misunderstood teen that is paying for the generations of bad luck that his family has endured over the years. This novel is opening up the doors to conversation and great class discussions. The topics of our discussions include, personal responsibility and using our social skills when working with others. Our class is also celebrating the Summer Olympics! We have been reading up on Olympics fun facts, history, and the setting of this year's games. With less than a month to go, we are excited to see the USA bring home gold!

Ms. Joachim
Summer Greetings From Ms. Joachim! ESY is off to a wonderful start. In my Homeroom we have continued our study of figurative language and Idioms. My students learn a new idiom daily and we practice using the idioms we know throughout the day. In Language Arts we are reading the chapter book, “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” by Roald Dahl. The students have been making wise predictions in their reading logs. In Visualizing & Verbalizing my students have started off their summer learning with a bang! They are doing a great job of visualizing and verbalizing new vocabulary weekly. They also have been drawing vivid picture responses and writing detailed summaries about the stories we read each day. In math, my class continues to learn about fractions. We have learned how to add & subtract fractions with like denominators and just learned this week, how to simplify our answers. In Science we started with a unit on the “Five Senses”, and in Social Studies we’ve embarked on learning about the history of the Olympics, which will lead into learning about and researching various countries and athletes participating in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Thank you to my parents who have already returned their child’s “Field Trip Permission Slip”. If you still have yet to do so, please sign and return the permission slip early next week. As you know, our bowling trip is scheduled for Friday, July 29th. Until next time…stay cool!
Ms. McCowan
I can’t believe we are already two weeks into summer school. My homeroom class has adjusted well and has gotten into routine. The boys are fun work with and are very motivated to learn. They are looking forward to the visit from the Mad Scientist and our field trip bowling. In language arts class, we have begun reading, How to Eat Fried Worms while retelling the story including the characters, setting, and plot. However, we are expanding our reading comprehension by asking who, when, where, what, and why. We are also learning how to expand a sentence using Framing Your Thoughts. During Orton Gillingham class, the students are learning phonemes, prefixes, and suffixes. We are reviewing skills learned last year. They are also practicing oral reading to improve their fluency and comprehension. The students are encouraged to read on a nightly basis. At the beginning of math we class, we begin with minute math. This is a review of skills learned through out the school year. Afterwards, we work on adding, subtracting, and multiplying skills. They will also review money, time, and measurement. All students are hard workers and complete all class work. During science class, hands on activities, visuals, videos, and projects will be used to help with the learning of concepts. Social Studies is our last class of the day. During this class, we are learning the states and capitals. We will also create a state book with information about each state. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you have. You may contact me through email [email protected] or contact the school. I will be available until 1:00 pm during the summer.
