Welcome! Вітаємо! Bienvenue!

We are delighted that you could join us for Ottawa’s second annual Ukrainian summer festival.

This year, the Festival’s theme recognizes the many contribu-tions those of Ukrainian heritage have made as one of Cana-da’s nation builders. For well over a century, Ukrainians have helped to weave Canada’s cultural fabric.

Our community is proud to host and celebrate our unique Ukrainian heritage, culture and traditions. We hope that you will experience our genuine warmth and hospitality while you are enjoying the Capital Ukrainian Fes-tival.

Our volunteers have worked tirelessly to bring to you a completely different festival experience each day. On Thursday night, you can explore Ukrainian-Canadian culture and history with a stellar series of award-winning films. On Friday, we have a double treat for you: a fashion show where art and creativity will be showcased on the catwalk; and for those of you who like to dance, a DJ dance party will round out the evening. On Saturday we want you to fully experience the cultural richness that is Ukrainian: dance, music, arts & crafts, educational tours, children’s activities, and, of course, a great selection of food. Sunday’s program, “One World Show”, is the Festival’s way of underlining how important diversity has been to allowing Ukrainians, and other groups, contribute to the building of a strong Canada. As a fitting end to a fun-filled 4-day festival, we have invited various cultural and musical groups to join us in celebrating the power and richness of diversity.

As a final thought, this is a Festival that was born only a year ago. Immensely popular, we owe a warm and heartfelt THANK YOU to all the volunteers who contribute to the success of the festival. Without our dedicated army of volunteers, we could not have brought you this wonderful event. Success belongs to them and I am so proud to call them “my festival family”.

Thank you, дякую, merci to all who made the Capital Ukrainian Festival a resounding success.

Jane KolbePresident, Capital Ukrainian Festival

125th Anniversary of Ukrainian Immigration to Canada

This year marks a historical milestone for Ukrainian-Canadians – the 125th Anniversary of Ukrain-ian immigration to Canada. There are over 1.3 million Canadians of Ukrainian descent, of those, 25,000 live in Ottawa. The Capital Ukrainian Festival will give you four days of mememorable activities to celebrate the occasion.

A special logo was created for the 125 anniversary by Oleh Lesiuk. This logo captures the special event in three parts. The bottom part symbolizes the four waves of immigration to Canada. These are the waves of the oceans to be overcome, the waves of people that brought new hopes and dreams to a new land.

The central part of the logo represents people transforming themselves into three flying cranes. These powerful, intelligent and enduring birds appear often in Ukrainian music and folklore and

are known in Canada as Zhuravli, a symbol of people migrating from one’s own nest to travel to far lands, possibly never to return again.

The group of cranes symbolizes a family as a founda-tion of society. Once settled in a new land they strive to desired heights. The national crest of Ukraine – the Golden Trident (Tryzub), superimposed on a blue crane, symbolizes the country of origin.

The wings of the cranes ultimately transform into a Maple Leaf – the national symbol of Canada.

The number “125” indicates 125 years of immigration to Canada.

These many waves of Ukrainians have contributed to building a strong, culturally rich and vibrant Can-ada.

Dear Friends:

Greetings to the Capital Ukrainian Festival

On behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, which represents the interests and brings together under one umbrella Canada’s 1.3 million strong Ukrainian Canadian community, I would like to congratulate and thank the organizers of the 2nd Annual Capital Ukrainian Festival.

It is only fitting that the Ukrainian community in Ottawa, our Nation’s Capital, host this impor-tant showcase of Ukrainian culture, music, arts, food and traditions as we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada, the 75th anniversary of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the 25th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence.

As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently stated, “Canada’s greatest strength is in its diversity, and I’m proud to see multiculturalism flourish in communities right across this great country, as shown time and time again by the extraordinary strength of Ukrainian Canadians who see no contradiction in being proud Ukrainians and proud Canadians at the same time.”

Multiculturalism has become one of the most fundamental values that defines Canada as a na-tion, and the Ukrainian Canadian community feels very proud to have been instrumental in its development and adoption some 45 years ago.

Please enjoy the singers, dancers, artists, cuisine and be sure to enjoy the world famous Ukrain-ian Canadian hospitality.

Yours very truly,UKRAINIAN CANADIAN CONGRESS

As Minister of Canadian Heritage and the Min-ister responsible for Multiculturalism, it is my privilege to welcome you to this year’s Capital Ukrainian Festival.

This year’s edition is particularly significant as 2016 marks 125 years of Ukrainian immigration to Canada. Canadians of Ukrainian descent now number over 1.3 million across Canada, with over 20,000 in Ottawa alone.

Ukrainian immigrants to Canada brought with them their vibrant and colourful cultural tra-ditions and have enriched Canada’s society, economy, and diversity. Over four days, the festival will bring those rich traditions to life through dance, food, music, fashion, and art, demonstrating Canada’s diversity and intro-ducing Ottawans to Ukrainian culture.

I congratulate the organizers, participants, performers, and attendees for making the Capital Ukrainian Festival a success.

Enjoy the celebrations!

Dear friends,

I am so proud to have this opportunity to send greetings to all of you at-tending the Capital Ukrainian Festival. This is truly a special year to be a part of the celebrations as the festival marks the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada.

Ukrainian culture is so rich and diverse and we are a stronger city and com-munity for having learned from our Ukrainian neighbours and friends.

This festival truly offers something for everyone in attendance. From dance and music to deli-cious food!

You don’t have to be Ukrainian to truly enjoy everything this festival has to offer – especially the Perogies!

I am also proud of the Ontario government for supporting integral cultural festivals in Ottawa such as the Capital Ukrainian Festival. Congratulations to the organizers for being awarded an Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund Grant from the Ontario government.

I am a true believer that our differences only make us a stronger community and today, we can celebrate that diversity!

Congratulations to all the organizers, staff and volunteers who are working tirelessly to makeCapital Ukrainian Festival an absolute hit! Looking forward to many more years of celebrations.

I am delighted to offer my moral support to the Capital Ukrainian Festival organizers for providing a valuable forum for festival-go-ers of Ukrainian ancestry, and the wider community, to celebrate Ukrainian culture and heritage through the presentation of award-winning film, performing arts, fashion, and culinary arts showcases, including the ex-hibition of art and the staging of a traditional Yarmarok (marketplace).

As Head of Council, I want also to take this opportunity to salute the some 25,000 Otta-wans, and 1.3 million Canadians, of Ukrainian descent, in recognition of the 125th Anniver-sary of Ukrainian settlement Canada.

Dear friends!

I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending Capital Ukrainian Festi-val in Ottawa!

2016 makes this event very special: the Ukrain-ian community of Canada celebrates 125th an-niversary of first Ukrainian settlements, 75th anniversary of the Ukrainian Canadian Con-gress and young Ukrainian State celebrates its 25th anniversary. Those jubilees evidence the friendly ties, rooted deeply in history of our two great nations and peoples.

Ottawa’s Ukrainian Festival contributes to further rapprochement between our peoples and brings together individuals and commu-nities of different origins. It also allows us to proudly celebrate the rich Ukrainian heritage and history in the Canadian capital.

Taking this pleasant opportunity, I would like to thank the Ukrainian community of Ottawa for the interest, love and respect to Ukrainian ancestry and for preserving and promoting cultural traditions of our people.

Please accept my best wishes for a memora-ble and joyful Capital Ukrainian Festival.

Music is the lifeblood of any Canadian Ukrainian community. Musicians, as active scribes and inter-preters of social rituals, help to both keep alive ethnic identity while transforming “old music and instruments” into new genres of music. To know the “new” sometimes means knowing the “old”: whether it’s an accordion ensemble, bandura, or the very popular tsymbaly. These instruments are intermingling to create a unique brand of Ukrainian music that all Canadians can relate to.

100 Years of Ukrainian Churches in CanadaPhotographer, Sterling Demchinsky, will present “100 Years of Ukrainian Churches in Canada”, at 7:00 pm on Saturday, July 23. Photographs and discussion will centre on the evolution of archi-tectural style of Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox churches built in Canada from the late 19th and 20th centuries.
