The great pyramid of Giza, is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids of Giza. It was constructed between 2560-2540 BC. It was the tallest man made structure on Earth for 3,800 years. It is believed to have been built for the pharaoh Khufu.

The Parthenon is a temple on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece. It is dedicated to the goddess Athena. Construction was finished in 438 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece.

The Great Wall of China was finished roughly in 206 BC by the first Emperor of China. Qin Shi Huang. Much of the wall has been destroyed and rebuilt. Most of what remains was built in the Ming dynasty. In total it measures about 13,000 miles or 22,000 km. (The UK is around 1,000 miles long).

Jesus Christ is believed to have been born around 4 BC. He is often referred to as Jesus of Nazareth. Most people believe that Jesus was a Jewish Rabbi from Galilee who preached his message orally. Christians believe that he was the son of God.

The coliseum was built in 80 AD. Construction was started by Vespasian in 70AD and finished by Titus. The coliseum could hold between 50-80,000 people. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist destinations.

The last of the Roman Soldiers leave Britain in 410 AD. With it goes the technological advances that they had brought with them. Britain was left to defend itself. Although we were left with the roads and towns that they had built over 300 years of rule. As well as Christianity.

The Hagia Sophia is a former Greek Orthodox church, later an imperial mosque and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. It was built in 537 AD. Built by the Byzantine Empire. It was the largest domed structure for over a 1,000 years.

1066 – The Battle of Hastings is the last time that the British Isles was successfully invaded and conquered. William the conqueror fought the Anglo-Saxon King Harold II at Hastings on the 14th October 1066. With victory, William became the first Norman King of England.

The Domesday book was completed in 1086 on orders of William the Conqueror. It is a survey of the British Isles. It details the land distribution of the Isles as well as its content. Who owns what and who owes who. As well as the amount of Tax that is owed

On December 29th 1170 in Canterbury. Thomas Becket, the archbishop of Canterbury, is murdered by soldiers on the orders of Henry II of England over the rights and privileges of the Church. Canterbury becomes an important place of pilgrimage for the Catholic Church.

The Spanish Armada sailed from Spain in 1588. Their aim was to overthrow Queen Elizabeth the First of England. The Spanish had 130 ships carrying 30,000 troops.

The two fleets met in the English Channel, the English were severely outnumbered but were smaller and more manoeuvrable.

The Taj Mahal is a white mausoleum located in Agra, India. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife. It was completed in 1653 AD. It is often recognized as the “Jewel of Muslim art in India”.

In 1649 Charles the First of England was executed. This led to the an 11 year gap in the rule of the Stuarts and led to the rise of Oliver Cromwell. It was the end of the English Civil War. Where English men fought English men.

Acts of Union 1707, joined the Kingdom of England and Scotland into a single united kingdom known as Great Britain. The two countries had shared a monarch since 1603 under King James I (VI of Scotland). On the Union, the historian Simon Schama said "What began as a hostile merger, would end in a full partnership in the most powerful going concern in the world ... it was one of the most astonishing transformations in European history.

The American Civil War ended in 1783. Fought between Great Britain and Thirteen American colonies. The War has its origins in the resistance of many Americans to taxes imposed unlawfully by British Parliament. In 1776 France and later Spain became involved on the side of the Americans.

The Battle of Trafalgar 1805 was a naval engagement between the Royal Navy and the fleets of France and Spain (Napoleonic Wars). The battle was decisive, confirming the superiority of the Royal Navy led by Admiral Nelson. Nelson was mortally wounded in battle and became one of Britain's greatest war hero's.

The Stockton and Darlington railway opened in 1825 became the first public railway built by Stephenson. It was made up of over 15 miles of track. The journey of 9 miles took two hours and reached speeds of almost 15 mph.

The Industrial Revolution began in 1760 and lasted to about 1840. This period included numerous new mechanical processes and inventions. Such as the invention of the spinning mule in 1769.

The abolition of slavery in the UK occurred in 1833 via an act of Parliament. This gave all slaves in the British Empire their freedom. The British government paid compensation to the slave owners. The law was passed due to the work of Wilberforce, Clarkson, Knight, Speale and others.

Chartism was a working class movement for political reform in Britain which existed from 1838-1850. It was a national movement that involved petitions signed by millions presented to the UK government. It gave all working class MEN the right to vote in 1867…

It is because of Chartism that we have a say in the way that the country is run today.

On the 22nd January 1901 Queen Victoria dies. She is the longing reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Her reign is known as the Victorian Period and oversaw numerous changes to the UK. The population doubled from 16 to 32 million. The British Empire became the largest Empire the world had ever seen. 1/5 of the worlds population.

World War One, also known as the First World War ended on the 11th November 1911. More than 9 million combatants, and over 7 million civilian deaths. No-one could have predicted the horrifying consequences of modern weaponry being used together with out-of-date tactics.

The Empire States Building is a 103 Storey building located in Manhattan, New York City. It stands at 443m High. It stood as the tallest building in the world for nearly 40 years from its completion in 1931 until late 1970. It is now the 23rd Tallest building in the world. The project involved around 3,400 people. 5 people died during its construction.

In January 1933 Hitler became chancellor of Germany and by August 1934, he had declared himself Führer - the leader of Germany.

The Normandy landings on the 6th June 1944 (D-Day) is the start of the Allied invasion of Normandy and led to the Allied victory in the Second World War. It was the largest invasion to take place in History. Involving around 150,000. There were around 5,000 deaths.

Adolf Hitler committed suicide by gunshot on the 30th April 1945 in his Fuhrerbunker in Berlin. The war officially ends with Germany on Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) the 4th May 1945. However Japan fight on…The total deaths are over 60 million.

The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Japan) take place in August 1945. They are the only two uses of nuclear weapons in warfare. It led to the deaths of over 200,000 Japanese civilians.

The liberation of Auschwitz by the Russians occurred in January 1945. At Auschwitz 1.1 million Jews were murdered by the Nazis as part of the final solution (The Holocaust). In total 11 million Jews were killed, 1 million of who were children.

After the civil war in China, Mao Zedong becomes the leader of China. His party founds the people republic of China in October 1949. in the years that follow, China becomes one of the most powerful countries in the world. Today its population stands at 1.3 BILLION. Mao encouraged population growth. However his great leap forward (the industrialisation of China, from farming to Industrial) resulted in an estimated 45 million deaths. Mostly from starvation.

In 1969 America lands men on the moon. Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong are the first men to ever set foot on another planet. They spend around 2 hours on the moon before returning to Earth. Just 12 men have repeated this feat.
