QUESTIONS FOR PARSHAS BECHUKOSAI
BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: Is it really true that if a person does Hashem’s mitzvos he’ll receive all the blessings listed in the parsha – what about when bad things happen to good people? Second Aliyah: (26:6‐7) If there will be no swords in your land, how could the very next pasuk state that your enemies will fall by the sword? Third Aliyah: (26:11) Is the statement, “My soul will not despise you” really a good blessing? Fourth Aliyah: If a person can donate whatever he wishes to the Temple, why have Erchin laws which define a fixed amount per person? Fifth Aliyah: (27:21) Why does an unredeemed sanctified field go to the Kohen at Yovel – why can’t the Temple just keep it? Sixth Aliyah: (27:28) What does the word “cherem” mean? Seventh Aliyah: (27:34) Why does Sefer Vayikra end by reminding us that these mitzvos were given on Har Sinai, especially since that was mentioned already at the beginning of Parshas Behar?
Weekly Halachah—Parshas Bechukosai R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]
On Motzaei Shabbos leading into Yom Tov, what sort of candle do I use for havdalah?
When Shabbos leads into Yom Tov, we recite havdalah as part of kiddush.
Most people don't use a standard havdalah candle for this havdalah, for two reasons: (1) On Yom Tov we may light candles from an existing flame for our benefit, but this lighting would be solely for a mitzvah, and (2) We may not extinguish it afterward, and leaving it burning would be inconvenient. Instead, people use their Yom Tov candles. [Note that one must either daven maariv or recite "Baruch HaMavdil bein kodesh l'kodesh" before lighting these candles from an existing flame.]
Some join two candles to create a multi‐wicked flame, but there may be halachic problems in joining and separating the flames. There are at least three popular practices: • Use just one candle; • Hold two candles side by side;
• Join the flames of two candles, so that they merge into
one.
One should follow the family custom.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
Financial Statements for the year ending December 2015 are presently available for pick up at the Shul Office
OBLIGATIONS PROCESS Important Information for the 2016‐2017 Membership Year!
At BAYT, members only need to complete an Obligations application once every three years so long as the member’s financial circumstances don’t change, which can be confirmed annually by signing a confirmation form. In other words, when an Obligations application is submitted, membership dues would be set for that year and the next two years. Of course, any member who had suffered a downturn in their financial situation is free to submit a new Obligations application and ask for a lower assessment. If your last application was for 2013‐2014, please make sure you pick up an Obligations application from the office or download one from the Shul’s website. If you submitted an application for either last year or the year before, and your financial circumstances have not changed, then you can keep your dues at the same level by filling out a confirmation form. All forms available on our website.
For any questions, please feel free to contact: Yoel Eis – 905.889.0277
BAYT PARTICIPATES IN THE REFORESTATION AND SALVAGE EFFORTS
In what has been described as the biggest fire since the 2010 Carmel fire, a huge blaze broke out around Jerusalem on May 25, 2016. JNF is raising emergency funds to aid Israel's Fire & Rescue Service, repair the vast ecological damage caused by the fires, replace depleted firefighting supplies, and provide firefighters with much‐needed equipment to bat‐tle future fires.
A day later and the Jerusalem forest that was ablaze in flames is still smoldering in places. Thankfully no one was injured. Nearly 100 fire‐fighters from Jerusalem and central Israel fought the fire and were able to stop it before it reached the line of homes. Almost 200 acres of forest was destroyed – that’s a lot of trees. All 13 of Israel’s firefighting planes were deployed to extinguish the flames from the air, flying more than 58 sorties.
BAYT encourages you to donation to support Israel’s Fire & Rescue Ser‐vices. With your donation they will be better equipped to handle the next emergency. We are collecting funds to be forwarded to JNF in support of the reforestation efforts and the bolstering of the Fire & Res‐cue Services.
Make your cheques out to “BAYT”, and note on the memo line: “Israel Fire & Rescue”. Donations can be made in person, over the phone or online http://www.bayt.ca/payment.php and select Community Liaison Sponsor.
