Learning Beyond the Classroom – Sec 1 Financial Literacy Workshop

In the Sec 1 Financial Literacy Workshop, students engage in board games to learn about:

• basic financial literacy,

Lower Secondary Environmental and Life Science Programme

The Lower Secondary Environmental and Life Science Programme is specially designed to give students a taste of one aspect of the Life Sciences. The students not only gain hands-on learning experience, but also deepen their knowledge and application of Life Science in the real world.

Historical / Geographical Investigation (HI/GI)

• Historical / Geographical Investigation allows:

– student-directed hands-on fieldwork on an issue

– application and transference of what was learnt from lessons into real world issues

– going beyond the classroom to actively look for, gather and analyse data to address the inquiry question posed and to presenting their findings.

• 1 HI and 1 GI a year.

Geographical Inquiry through Geographical Investigation (GI)

• Sec 1 GI topic: Water Management in Singapore. Students will set out to investigate the water quality in Singapore’s water bodies.

Historical Inquiry through Historical Investigation (HI)

Interactive Learning Journey to Singapore National Museumorganised for the entire Sec 1 level as part of their Historical Inquiry.

Sec 1 - Living conditions and contributions of the early immigrants inSingapore. This project is also to facilitate opportunities for studentsto make better meaning of Singapore Today based on theirdiscovery of Singapore’s past.

Sec 1 Design Workshop• The Sec 1 Design Workshop aims

– to raise students awareness in multi-disciplinary design elements.

– to allow students to apply basic D&T knowledge and Design Thinking skills

What to Expect for Progress Reports & HDP

• Term 1 & 3 progress reports will be given out on first day of

Term 2 and Term 4 respectively.

• A summary report will be given by PTM in Term 2 (31 May) to

show the learning progress in Semester 1. Similarly for Sem

2 in Term 4 (25 Oct)

• Student wellbeing is key - Not more than 4 weighted

assessments in a week as a guide (generally fewer than 4)

• Assessment schedule for Sem 1 will be handed out to

parents by Term 1 Week 3

• Academic grades and scores are not the only indicators of your success. Instead, you should learn to acquire deep knowledge and skills.

What is Subject-Based Banding (SBB)?

Every student is unique and possesses different strengths. Taking subjects at a higher academic level can help students nurture their strengthsand give them more opportunities throughout their educational journey, so that they are more engaged in learning.

Previously, students in N(A) and N(T) courses can take higher-level subjects starting from Secondary 3. With SBB, your child can start doing so from the start of Secondary 1, to build a stronger foundation in subjects that they are good at.

• Some students (and parents) have shared that SBB allows the students to challenge themselves, and to have more options for Sec 3 subject combinations and post-secondary courses.

• A strong foundation in literacy, numeracy and reasoning, would ensure students are better prepared for various post-secondary progression pathways (e.g. to ITE and Polytechnic).

What are the benefits?

mid-year or year-end examinations, based on these criteria:– 75% or higher in the subject; (English, Math, Science,

Mother Tongue)– 60% or higher in the overall average; and – Positive learning attitude to cope with the higher academic

demand• Our school will provide support through bridging programmes

for these new SBB students.

Will it be a Struggle?• Students are encouraged to continue with

the higher-level subjects until the end of Sec 2, as students do need time to adjust to the higher academic demands.

• Our school will monitor students’ progress in the higher-level subjects as well as overall progress in all subjects.

• Our school is mindful of students’ socio-emotional and academic needs and will endeavour to provide the necessary support to students to help them cope.

Do you continue until Sec 4?

Your child may continue with the corresponding higher-level subject at upper secondary if he/she meets our school’s criteria at the end of Sec 2.

HIGHER MOTHER TONGUE

• Top 10% of PSLE cohort or 11-30% of PSLE cohort, scored A* in MT or merit in HMT – can opt to take Higher Mother Tongue (HMT) from Term 1

• All other students – MT teachers will assess standard in Term 1. If deemed suitable, will be offered HMT from Term 2.
