Malesela, Jacobeth Mmabyala Louisa (DCur) Jackie Malesela completed the Diploma in General Nursing at Bophelong Nursing College in 1980, and obtained the Baccalaureas Curationis (Education and Administration) in 1990 from the University of South Africa and a Masters’ in Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science from the University of Pretoria in 2004. She is currently employed by Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University as a senior lecturer and has published in an accredited journal. She has presented her work at both national and international conferences. A qualitative contextual research design served as the basis for the development of the model to facilitate best practice during intrapartum care. A post-modern constructivist philosophical approach gave guidance to the research. The themes that emerged from the perceptions of midwives were values and ethical practice; creating enabling environment in terms of human, material and financial resources; team building; stimulation of critical; reflective; creative and innovative thinking skills; good communication and interpersonal skills; competency, evidenced-based clinical practice; collaborative partnerships; consultation with experts and stakeholders nationally and internationally and implementation of national and international woman-centred best practice generated standards within professional and regulatory frameworks. Strong leadership, astute clinical governance, supervision, auditing, monitoring, evaluation, feedback and risk management also emerged. These findings were conceptualised within the existing literature. The development of a conceptual framework and the model with guidelines to facilitate best practice during intrapartum care constituted original contribution towards midwifery practice. Supervisor: Prof MM Chabeli Co-supervisor: Prof AGW Nolte

Louw, Amanda (DTech) Amanda is an educator in the domain of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences and has vast experience in the fields of diagnostic radiography, breast imaging and education. Both her masters’ and doctoral studies were in the field of breast imaging and her present research focus is on high fidelity simulation based education in the health care sciences. Amanda is affiliated to the University of Johannesburg and has collaborated with colleagues at various national and international universities. She is keen to get involved in novel projects and her current special interest is bioethics and medical law. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the leading cause of global cancer-related female mortality. The population that is dependent on the public health sector in SA has unequal access to breast imaging services in comparison to the private sector population. This problem is in part the result of a severe shortage of radiologists in this sector, combined with a limited mammographer scope of practice which prevents mammographers from performing additional procedures to assist radiologists with their workload. A development research design was employed in three phases to develop an advanced training programme suitable to teach mammographers the skills to a standard comparable with that of radiologists The intervention and research output lead to a refined and comprehensive training programme, developed with and verified by a panel of national and international breast imaging experts to extend the current skills of mammographers. The advanced mammographer training programme is the first programme of its kind that was developed in South Africa in order to avail the benefits of radiological expertise in breast imaging to a wider public health sector population. Supervisor: Prof AGW Nolte

Abdool Karim, Quarraisha (PhD (h.c.)) Prof Quarraisha Abdool Karim, PhD, Associate Scientific Director of the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in SA (CAPRISA), is an infectious diseases epidemiologist whose main research interests are in understanding the evolving HIV epidemic in South Africa; factors influencing acquisition of HIV infection in adolescent girls; and sustainable strategies to introduce antiretroviral therapy in resource-constrained settings. She holds professorships in Clinical Epidemiology from the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, USA, and also in Public Health at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is also a visiting scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and visiting lecturer at Harvard University. Since 1998 Prof Abdool Karim has continually played a central role in building the science base in Southern Africa through the Columbia University-Southern African Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Programme that has trained over 600 scientists in Southern Africa. She was the principal investigator of the landmark CAPRISA 004 Tenofovir Gel trial, which provided proof of concept for Microbicides, highlighted by Science as one of the Top 10 scientific breakthroughs in 2010. Professor Abdool Karim has published extensively and has authored several books and book chapters, and is rated n the A category by the NRF. The toll of the HIV epidemic on young women makes the need for interventions to protect them from HIV infection imperative. Such interventions need to address risk factors for HIV infection, while simultaneously addressing the social, political, and economic factors that generate vulnerability and perpetuate risk. CAPRISA's epidemiological studies have enhanced the understanding of the evolving HIV epidemic in South Africa by generating valuable information on HIV acquisition in young women to guide the development of interventions focused on young women. The CAPRISA 007 RHIVA (Reducing HIV in Adolescents) trial, a proof of concept cluster, randomised controlled trials to evaluate the impact of a high school-based cash incentivised intervention package to reduce HIV infection in young women in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Prof Abdool Karim is a member of the UNAIDS Scientific Expert Panel and fulfils the role of scientific advisor to the Executive Director of UNAIDS. Furthermore, she is an Advisory Board member of the Higher Education and Training HIV/AIDS Programme (HEAIDS), Scientific Advisory Board member of the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), Chair of the PEPFAR Adolescent Girls and Young Women Expert Working Group, a member of the HIV Centre Strategic Advisory Committee and the National Institute of Health OAR Microbicides Planning Group. She is also a former Vice-President (Southern African Region) of the African Academy of Sciences. Her membership includes, but are not exclusive to the following: Member, UNAIDS Science Expert Panel Committee; Foreign Associate Member, US National Academy of Medicine; Fellow, African Academy of Science; Fellow, the Royal Society of South Africa; and Fellow, the World Academy of Science.
