Yakushima Island and Kuchinoerabujima Island In October 2007 Kamiyaku Town and Yaku Town merged to form Yakushima Town.Yakushima Town consists of two islands, Yakushima Island and Kuchinoerabujima Island. Yakushima is located 135 kilometers south of Kagoshima City and Kuchinoerabujima Island is located 12 kilometers west-northwest of Yakushima.Kuchinoerabujima Island is an active volcanic island with a length of 12 kilometers and width of 5 kilome-ters. It is also known as a green volcanic island because of its vegetation coverage. The volcanic activities of Mt. Shin, a 626 meter high volcano, give Kuchinoerabujima Island some wonderful hot springs. Over 30 percent of the island is covered with bamboo. Some areas are sloped gently and are natural pastures.Yakushima Island is a round shaped island with a circumference of 132 kilometers and an area of about 504 square kilometers. There are many mountains over 1,000 meters high, including Mt. Miyanoura which is the highest in Kyushu at 1,936 meters. Most of the island’s mountains are covered with forest. For this reason Yakushima is called “The Alps on the Ocean”. Yakushima because of its environment and resources became the first World Natural Heritage Site in Japan in 1993. The old growth forest and the vertical distribution of vegetation, ranging from a subtropical zone to a subarctic zone, are some of the reasons why Yakushima has been recognized as a world treasure. One characteristic of Yakushima is the abundant rain, around 4,500 millimeters annually, 8,000 to 10,000 millimeters in the mountains. Annual rainfall in Yakushima is more than double of mainland Japan. Half of Yakushima’s yearly rainfall is from May to August. The average temperatures of Yakushima’s coastal areas are a mild 20 degree as it is located in a subtropical zone. In winter flowers can be seen but the mountains on the other hand will be covered with snow.
Season InformationSpring(March ‒ May) The mountains are still very cold with occasional sleet. Although it is the beginning of the mountain climbing season, the weather is unpredictable and a cause of some mountain accidents. You must be very careful climbing the mountains during this time. It is still cold, so you should prepare for it with proper climbing equipment. In May loggerhead turtles start laying their eggs on some of the beaches around Yakushima. The nesting areas are protected during this season. Sea turtle observing tours are conducted on Nagata Beach.Late May is the best time to view ‘Shakunage’ rhododendron (alpine rose). It is also the start of the marine sports season, such as kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, surfing and so on. Summer(June ‒ August)June is the beginning of the rainy season. During this time many beautiful rainbows can be seen. Yakushi-ma is also known as ‘the rainbow island’.In mid-July, the rainy season is over and it is the beginning of the summer season. Typhoon season start in around August and ends in mid-October. It is always advisable to check the weather report and trail conditions in advance when planning a trip during this season.During the summer season, there are many popular activities that you can enjoy, such as mountain climbing, river and ocean sports, many summer festivals and observation of loggerhead turtle eggs hatching.
Autumn(September ‒ November)The amount of precipitation is very light. Yakushima will have clear blue skies and beautiful autumn days but for occasional typhoons. Autumn is the best season to go mountain climbing and hiking. During this season the beautiful colors of autumn leaves can be seen.
Winter(December ‒ February)Coldest temperature along the coast is around 8 degree Celsius. December has the least rainfall of 120mm during the year. The mountain tops may have over one meter of snow which may last until March. At an altitude of about 1,600 meters you may see hoarfrost on branches of Yaku-sugi cedars. In December the climbing route to Mt. Miyanoura is possible for advanced level climbers. The roads to the mountains may be closed due to icy conditions. Winter mountain climbing will require planning with current information on mountain conditions and weather. During December to January Ponkan is harvested.

Yakushima & Kuchinoerabujima Guide
World Natural Heritage SiteYakushima is a small round-shaped island located in the southern part of Japan with an area of about 504 square kilometers. The center of the island has a range of mountains over 1,800 meters high and is fully covered with snow in winter. Yakushima is also known as “The Alps on the Ocean”. It is said to rain 35 days a month and this heavy rainfall is one of the characteristics of Yakushima. The annual rainfall is 4,000 mm in the lowlands and around 10,000 mm in the mountains. These abundant rainfalls are the results of the Kuroshio currents and topographical features of Yakushima. This is the source of the rich nature of Yakushima with its unique forest and vegetation. One feature of Yakushima’s nature is its diversity. There are many varieties of fauna and flora. The western coast of Yakushima is well-known for its vertical distribution of vegetation from the coastline to the mountain tops. Yaku-sugi cedars, the icon of Yakushima, are known for their unusual forms, growth process and longevity. In 1954 the Japanese Government designated this area as Yakushima prime-val cedar forest, a special natural monument. In 1993, 20 % of Yakushima was recognized and was registered as a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The Vertical Distribution of Vegetation Yakushima is also called ‘the Alps on the Ocean’. The vertical distribution of vegetation of Yakushima is unique. A wide climatic range can be seen. The temperatures range from a subarctic climate of the high mountains (much like that of Hokkaido ‒ the coldest area of Japan) to a subtropical climate of the coastal areas. The areas on top of the mountains have many plants indigenous to Yakushima which makes Yakushima unique.Yakushima is blessed with many natural conditions, geographic, topographic, and climatic. For this reason, it has a rich biodiversity. It has over 1,900 varieties of plants and over 80 of them are indigenous to Yakushima. Yakushima is sometimes called the ‘Galapagos of the Orient’.

Yaku-sugi Cedars Yakushima Island has the most southern distribution of Japanese cedar called “Yaku-sugi”. Yaku-sugi cedars are known for its close annual rings (growth rings). Cedars in Yakushima over 1,000 years old are called “Yaku-sugi” and the younger cedars are called “Ko-sugi” which means child cedar. Massive and ancient Yaku-sugi cedars such as “Jomon-sugi cedar”, estimated to be thousands of years old with a 43 meter circumference root spread, can still be seen. In addition, there are many Yaku-sugi stumps. “Wilson’s Stump” the most famous stump has a trunk circumference of 13.8 meters at 5 meters above ground level.
Distribution Mapof Yaku-sugi
Wild Animals of YakushimaYaku-MonkeyYaku monkeys are a subspecies of the Japanese monkey and they are characterized by their small size and long hair. They can be seen all over Yakushima especially on Seibu-rindo Forest Path because of the rich laurel-leaved forest. When observing Yaku monkeys, do not disturb them and keep your distance.
Yaku-DeerThe Yaku deer with its lovely eyes and small size are a subspecies of the Japanese deer. Their distribu-tion extends over a wide range on Yakushima and can be seen easily in the cedar forest at altitudes over 1,000 meters, along the coast, Seibu-rindo Forest Path and even near villages.
Sea Turtle InformationYakushima is where the greatest number of sea turtles come to lay their eggs in Japan. Nagata Beach is the largest area in the North pacific for loggerhead turtles to lay their eggs. Unfortunately, the sea turtle ecosystem in Yakushima has been affected by the increasing number of visitors. Many sea turtles avoid beaches with people and bright lights. Another problem is people stepping on the nest packing the sand and making it difficult for the hatchlings to dig out. Nagata Beach is now protected during the nesting and hatching season. There are nighttime restriction periods for access … From May 1st to August 31 (19:30 p.m-5:00 a.m.)* During the nesting season (From May 1st to July 31st), Nagata Sea Turtles Association conducts sea turtle observing tours to avoid crowds and confusion on Nagata Beach. To see the sea turtles laying their eggs on Nagata beach, visitors need to make a reservation. ☝There are rules for observing sea turtles on Nagata Beach, which visitors must follow. Catching sea turtles or collecting their eggs are strictly prohibited. Offenders will be punished.

Jomon-sugi Cedar Height : 25.3 meters Chest Height Trunk Circumference :16.4 meters Presumed age : 2,000 years old - 7,200years old Altitude :1,300 meters Location: Along the Ohkabu Mountain Trail Jomon-sugi cedar is considered to be the largest Yaku-sugi cedar with a trunk circumference of 16.4 meters, the largest in Japan. Jomon-sugi Cedar’s stocky and short form is characteristic of Yaku-sugi cedars growing in the harsh environment of Yakushima’s high mountains. Because of its shape, Jomon-sugi cedar was not valued during the Edo period and survived the massive logging done at that time. The age of Jomon-sugi cedar has been estimated to be from 2,000 to 7,000 years old. Being hollow, a more precise dating of Jomon-sugi cedar is difficult. In 1996 a wooden observation deck was built to protect Jomon-sugi cedar from the increasing visitors.
Kigen-sugi Cedar Height: 19.5 meters Chest Height Trunk Circumference: 8.1 meters Presumed age: 3,000 years old Altitude: 1,230 meters Location: Along the Anbo Forest Road The top of Kigen-sugi cedar is dead, however it looks to be full of energy when seen from below. Kigen-sugi cedar coexists with many epiphytes. These epiphytes, such as the Yakushima rhododendron and Japanese rowan, bloom each season.
Wilson’s Stump Circumference: 13.8 meters Presumed age: 2,000 years old Altitude: 1,030 meters Location: Along the Ohkabu Mountain Trail Wilson’s Stump is a remnant of a large Yaku-sugi cedar cut down around 300 years ago. It is hollow and has a spring within it. There are also three young cedars, descendants of Wilson’s Stump, growing at its side. This is a good example of regeneration. Dr. E. H. Wilson, a notable English plant collector, researched Yaku cedar and introduced this large stump 52 years earlier than the discovery of Jomon-sugi cedar. Wilson’s Stump was named after him.

Starting from Nagata town on the western side of Yakushima, you may see Kushinoerabujima, the closest island to Yakushima. Its shape resem-bles a character in Moomin, a world popular children’s book, lying on its back. Going clockwise from Kuchinoerabujima, you may see three small islands, Kuroshima, Iwojima with a beautiful conical shaped volcano, and Takeshima shaped like a fish, on the horizon. Both Kuchinoerabujima and Iwojima are active volcanic islands. During an eruption, plumes of ash are a common sight. From the northeastern side of Yakushima, you may see Tanegashima, a flat long island running from north to south. The Tanegashima Space Center is located on the southern end of the island. Rocket launches seen from Yakushima are spectacular sights. And if you are lucky, you may see Magejima, a small flat island, off the northern coast of Tanegashima. On the southern side of Yakushima you may see Tokara Retto, a chain of volcanic islands, on the horizon. The largest islands of Takara Retto, Nakanoshima, Kuchinoshima, Gajajima, Suwanosejima, and Tairajima, may be seen from Yakushima. On certain days when the atmospheric conditions are just right, you may see the southernmost part of the mainland of Kagoshima and Mt. Kaimon. Mt. Kaimon, a beautiful coned shaped mountain, was chosen as one of the 100 most beautiful mountains in Japan.

Another popular mackerel product is “Saba-bushi”. Saba-bushi is traditionally dried mackerel. Smoked Mackerel in a vacuum pack is also another popular product as a convenient snack or souvenir.

Ohko-no-taki (Ohko Waterfall)Ohko Waterfall can be seen on the right before the entrance of Seibu-rindo Forest Path. It is 55 minutes by car from Anbo Town and after Kurio village. This waterfall was chosen as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan.Ohko Waterfall is the largest waterfall in Yakushima. It is a spectacular sight with its water cascading over the rocks from high above with a drop of 88 meters. Especially in the summer, Ohko Waterfall is crowded with many visitors enjoying the cool spray.

Mocchomu with its green mountains and a red bridge across the Tainokawa River. The entrance to Torohki Waterfall observatory deck is just across the road from ‘Pontan-kan’, a local products shop.
Ryujin-no-taki (Ryujin Waterfall)Ryujin Waterfall is located between two waterfalls, Senpiro Waterfall and Torohki Waterfall, along a small country road, on the way to Senpiro Waterfall. Mountain Trails on Yakushima On the map of Yakushima, the word ‘Hodo’ means trail. In general, Yakushima’s mountain climbing routes are well marked with signs. If you miss the signs and/or lose your way, please do not descent to a river because geographically there are many waterfalls and slippery ravines. You should stay and wait for help or descend along the ridge.
Mountain-climbing NotificationWe ask all climbers to submit a mountain-climbing notification. There are mountain-climbing notifications forms at each entrance, police stations, tourist information centers, Yakushima air port, Miyanoura and Anbo port, and Yakushima Town Office. You do not need to report to any administrative agencies in Yakushima after a climb.
About Mountain hutsThere are six unmanned mountain huts. Camping on the mountain is prohibited, so please use the mountain huts if you are planning to stay in the mountain overnight. If the capacity of of the mountain huts is exceeded only then you will be allowed to camp at an appointed site near the mountain huts. Mountain huts are first come first serve and no reservation can be made. Mountains of Yakushima Mt. MiyanouraMt. Miyanoura, at a height of 1,936 meters, is Kyushu’s highest mountain. High densities of Yakushima Rhododendron are on Mt. Miyanoura. Also the panoramic view from the mountain is very beautiful and makes you feel like you are on the top of the world. The best time to see the bloom of Yakushima Rhododendron on Mt. Miyanoura is from late May to early June. The best autumn leaves season, including mountain ashes and Yakushima maples (Acer morifolium koidz.), is from mid October to early November. The peaks of the mountains in Yakushima are covered with snow in winter, which can be three to six meters deep. So please be well prepared for climbing. Climbing from Yodogawa trail entrance to Mt. Miyanoura takes about 5 hours of serious climbing.
Mt. KuromiMt. Kuromi is located 1,831 meters above sea level. The summit of Mt. Kuromi has many surprisingly huge granites formations which is a spectacular sight for climbers. From Mt. Kuromi’s summit, several well-known mountain peaks including Kyusyu’s top 8 highest mountains can be seen. This is why Yakushima is often called ‘Alps on the Ocean’. Climbing Mt. Kuromi takes about three hours from Yodogawa trail entrance. It is an advanced level mountain climbing route.
Hananoego Highland MarshHananoego Highland Marsh is the southernmost highland marsh in Japan. It is situated in the mountains in the center of Yakushima, at an altitude of 1,640 meters. Many alpine plants can be seen there. You can also see skeleton Yaku-sugi cedars which are actually living yaku-sugi cedars that have been stripped of bark by the wind. The combination of clear water, alpine plants and moss creates fantastic sceneries. It is about 2 hours from Yodogawa trail entrance, on the way to Mt. Miyanoura and Mt. Kuromi.
Mt. NagataMt. Nagata at a height of 1,886 meters is the second highest mountain in Kyushu after Mt. Miyanoura. A spectacular full view of Mt. Nagata can be seen from Nagata Town. Especially, the winter view of Mt. Nagata fully covered with snow is amazing. Mt. Nagata is the only mountain in Yakushima that can be fully seen without climbing.Overlapping of huge granites on the top of Mt. Nagata makes for a unique landscape. On a clear day, from the top of Mt. Nagata, you can see a wide range of nature, the Yaku-sugi cedar forest, sea turtles nesting beach, and coral reefs. Climbing Mt. Nagata is an advanced level course and is difficult to return in a day.
Jomon-sugi CedarJomon-sugi Cedar is the largest cedar found in Yakushima. It is 25.3 meter tall with a trunk circumference of 16.4 meters. It is estimated to be thousands of years old. It can be seen on the southeastern slope near the ridge of Mt. Takatsuka along the Ohkabu Mountain Trail. The story of the existence of a gigantic Yaku-sugi cedar was passed down from olden times. In 1966, Sadatsugu Iwagawa, who lived in Miyanoura, found a gigantic Yaku-sugi cedar which finally proved the story true. This gigantic cedar was named “Jomon-sugi” and is the oldest known tree in Japan.Jomon-sugi cedar has a dignified atmosphere that comes from living a long time. The appearance of Jomon-sugi Cedar with its rough texture and many large burrs can only be seen on very old trees. Also the harsh environ-ment helped shape Jomon-sugi Cedar. To be Yaku-sugi cedar, the cedar trees must be over 1,000 years old. Anything less is called “Kosugi” meaning young cedar.
Wilson’s StumpWilson’s stump is 13.8 meters in trunk circumference and 4 meters in height. It is estimated to be 2,000 years old. By order of Taiko Hideyoshi Toyotomi, the tree was cut down to build the Temple of the Great Buddha. Wilson’s Stump with a hollow area of 16 square meters has a spring and a small shrine in it. This stump was introduced to the world by Dr. E. H. Wilson, a notable English plant collector, in 1914.It can be seen on the way to to Jomon-sugi cedar on Ohokabu Trail.A real size replica (model) of Wilson’s stump can be seen on a hill near Miyanoura Port.
Mt. MocchomuMt. Mocchomu is located in the southern part of Yakushima. You can get a spectacular view of it from Hara and Onoaida village. It is a very uniquely shaped mountain in that its appearance looks like a rocket. Because of its appearance, Mt. Mocchomu, at a height of 940 meters, is called the Matterhorn of the East. Climbing Mt. Mocchomu will take around 5 hours round trip from the trail entrance at the Senpiro Waterfall’s parking lot.
Mt. AikoMt. Aiko, at a height of 1,235 meters, is located in the northeastern part of Yakushima. It can be seen clearly from Koseda and Nagamine town. This is the only mountain in Japan which has the same name as Princess Aiko, who was born in 2001. The summit of Mt. Aiko is rocky and has a great view like many other high mountains of Yakushima. The trail entrance is in Koseda Town and takes 3 hours and 40 minutes to the summit.

①Shiratani Hut Shiratani Mountain Hut is a reinforced concrete building and is located on Kusugawa Mountain Trail at an altitude of 825 meters. The upper part of Shiratani River is near the hut. The capacity of this hut is 40 people and there are two toilets inside and water near the hut.
②Takatsuka Hut Takatsuka Mountain Hut was rebuilt in 2013. It is located at 1,330 meters above sea level, 8 minute walk from Jomon-sugi, at the junction of the Ohkabu Mountain Trail and Miyanoura Mountain Trail. The water supply for the users of this mountain hut is below Jomon-sugi. There is a toilet near this hut. The capacity of the hut is 20 people which is frequently exceeded because of it being near Jomon-sugi. We recommend you bringing a lightweight tent. Please be aware that there may be strong winds around this mountain hut.
③Shin-takatsuka Hut Shin-takatsuka Mountain Hut, 1,460 meters above sea level, is a wooden hut. It is located 1.7 kilometers away from Takatsuka Mountain Hut, an 80 minute walk. It was built in 1992. The area around Shin-takatsuka Mountain Hut is thick primeval forest. You may see wild Yaku-deers. Please do not feed wild animals to protect the ecosystem. The interior is constructed into double-decks and has a capacity of 40 people. There are two water places. The nearest water is located behind the hut. The other is on the trail to Jomon-sugi. Also there is a toilet near the hut.
④Shikano-sawa Hut Shikanosawa Mountain Hut is located 1.2 kilometers, around 45 minute walk, from Mt. Nagata. It is located between Hanayama Mountain Trail and Nagata Mountain Trail. The Shikanosawa Mountain Hut was built at Shikanowasa wetland in 1965. It is situated in a beautiful Yaku-sugi cedar forest. The high density of Yakushima Rhododendrons around Shikanosawa Mountain Hut bloom in spring. This scenery leaves a deep impression on many climbers. The stone-build mountain hut’s capacity is 20 people. This aged mountain hut is frequently repaired. The toilet is 50 meters away from this hut. There is water behind the hut. The approved camping site around this hut is limited due to Shikanosawa hut being located in wetland.

Disaster Information Under dangerous conditions, such as typhoon, heavy rain, flooding, high-wave, earthquake and so on, transportation services may be canceled and some routes going into the moun-tains may be closed. Please refrain from taking any unnecessary risks.
Things to keep in mind
TyphoonDuring a typhoon, stay inside and wait for the typhoon to subside. Check the weather news to make sure that typhoon has passed. Stay away from the ocean, rivers or cliffs.
!
Always keep safety in mind.
LightningDuring a lightning storm, do not take refuge under a tree, squat down and keep your head as low as possible. If swimming, get out of the water immediately. Stay indoors.
Climbing MountainsInform your family or friends in advance of your climbing schedule. Extra caution should be taken in the event of rain. Many mountain trails cross creeks which may swell and become very dangerous. Do not cross swollen creeks. Wait until the water subsides and is safe to cross or take a safer route. Please do not overestimate your ability, always consider all elements of risk.
Rivers in YakushimaEven on clear days the rain in the mountains can cause the streams to rise suddenly and turn into a fast stream or flash flood. Be careful of rivers which may look calm. There may be strong down currents beneath the surface of the river that can suck you in.
Swimming at the beachMany swimming areas have steep sudden drop-offs. Also there are slippery reefs and tidal pools. Please be aware of it for your safety. Do not do marine activities alone.
About rip currents Please swim in approved swimming areas. If you are caught in a rip current, do not panic. Swim with it and diagonally across until you are safe. Do not swim against the current.☝ Please swim at designated swimming areas.
Heavy Rain WarningStay away from the rivers or cliffs because of land slides and flash floods that may happen. Also the roads going to the mountains and Seibu-rindo Forest Trail may be blocked. Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine and Yakusugi Land may be closed and its routes may be regulated. Mountain streams, rivers, steep slopes, and cliffs should be avoided due to the possibility of flash floods and mudslides.
Earthquake & TsunamiIf you are in a building, find a safe place to wait out the earthquake, do not panic. If you are outside, keep away from buildings and walls. If you are driving a vehicle, slow down and park on the side of a road to allow emergency vehicle to pass. Tsunami may follow an earthquake. If a tsunami warning is issued, follow the instructions, evacuate to higher grounds immediately.
