DUTY CYCLE EXPLAINED

Select the Process that matches the metals you want to weld or cut

The duty cycle really details just how long the machine can operate within a TEN minute welding time without overheating or becoming damaged!

If your welding machine says ‘duty cycle =60% @ xyz amps’ this means that out of a welding ‘on-time’ of only ten minutes, your welder can only safely weld continuously for 6 minutes in every ten minutes, & if you exceed this 6 minutes, you will risk overheating or damaging your welder!

The ‘on-time’ is the actual welding time where a welding arc is being produced. The duty cycle is not relative to where your welder is only plugged in & switched on, but not being used.

Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, is an arc welding process that uses a consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld. The weld area is protected from atmospheric contamination by a shielding inert gas such as argon, and a filler rod is used. TIG is most commonly used to weld sections of stainless steel and non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, magnesium, and copper alloys. The process grants the operator greater control over the weld than competing processes such as (MMA) manual metal arc welding and (MIG) metal inert gas welding, allowing for stronger, higher quality welds. However, TIG is comparatively more complex and difficult to master, and furthermore, it is significantly slower than most other welding techniques.

Plasma cutting is a process that is used to cut most types steels and alloys using a plasma machine & compressed air. The principle of plasma cutting is based on the ionisation of air which is forced through a small orifice (the cutting tip) and air electrode. An electric charge combined with the ionised air creates the cutting arc (plasma).

Plasma is an effective means of cutting thin and thick materials alike. Hand-held torches can usually cut up to 50 mm thick steel plate, depending on the size of the machine.

Manual metal arc (MMA) welding, also known as stick welding, is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode coated in flux to lay the weld. An electric current, in the form of either alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) from a welding power supply, is used to form an electric arc between the electrode and the metals to be joined. As the weld is laid, the flux coating of the electrode disintegrates, giving off vapours that serve as a shielding gas and providing a layer of slag, both of which protect the weld area from atmospheric contamination.

Because of the versatility of the process and the simplicity of its equipment and operation, manual metal arc welding is one of the world’s most popular welding processes.

Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding, also referred to as metal active gas (MAG) is an automatic or semi-automatic process in which a wire connected to a source of direct current acts as an electrode to join two pieces of metal as it is continuously passed through a welding gun. A flow of an inert (argon) gas or active gas (CO2) (depending on the type of steel), is also passed through the welding gun at the same time as the wire.

This gas acts as a shield, keeping airborne contaminants away from the weld zone. The primary advantage of MIG welding is that it allows metal to be welded much more quickly than traditional “stick welding” techniques. This makes it ideal for fabrication work.

Tradeweld 309L-16 is a rutile basic high CrNi alloyed buffer electrode for welding stainless steel to mild steel as well as root passes in clad steel. Excellent weldability and slag release. Weldable on AC & DC and with high resistance to embrittlement & buffer layer for hardfacing applications.

A low carbon rutile steel electrode. Easy to weld in all positions (except vertical down). The smooth arc transfer characteristics leaves low spatter levels, excellent bead shape & good slag removal. Applications for Tradeweld E316L-16 include the single & multi-pass welding of matching molybdenum content bearing stainless steel such

as 301, 302, 303, 304, and 304L types. The 2.5% molybdenum content gives an increased resistance to pitting, corrosion & raises the creep strength for higher temperatures applications.

A rutile coated stainless electrode. Easy to weld in all positions (except vertical down). The highly alloyed electrode is extremely resistant to hot cracking even when diluted with carbon, austenitic & high alloys of steel. Weld deposits give excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation & good scaling resistance up to 1000˚C (1850˚F). Recommended for

the repair & maintenance of all steels, particularly those of unknown compositions, joining dissimilar steels such as stainless steel to carbon steels and repairing Die’s & Tool steels. Use a buffer layer prior to hard surfacing.

A basic, graphite coated electrode for the repair & maintenance of a wide range of cast iron components. It produces a soft stable arc with minimal penetration & splatter. It is very tolerant to parent metal contaminants such as oil and dirt. The ductile Nickel based weld deposit is readily machinable with good colour match to most cast irons. Applications of the Tradecast 99 include the

repair and reclamation of engine blocks cylinder heads differential housings, gear boxes, pump & machine housings & pulleys etc. in some applications Tradecast 99 has a good “wetting” action due to the high nickel weld deposit.

A basic, graphite coated nickel/iron electrode for high strength repair & maintenance welding of spherical graphite (S.G) iron, austenitic cast iron, meehanite & a wide range cast iron. It produces a soft stable arc with minimal penetration & spatter & is very tolerant to parent metal condiments such as oil and dirt. The ductile nickel/iron weld deposit is readily machinable

and has the higher strength required for welding S.G irons. Where higher joint strength is important, Tradecast 60ENiFe-CI may be used for root and fill passes followed by capping passes with Tradecast 100 for smoother surface finish.
