Dingle Historical Society presents

The Dingle Girls: Emigration & the Earl Grey Scheme

An illustrated lecture by Kay Caball Lecture venue: Dingle Benners Hotel, Main Street, Dingle.

Date: Thursday, 27th August, 8.00pm

All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome

The true story of 117 Kerry girls sent to Australia in 1849/1850 from Workhouses in Dingle (20), Kenmare (25), Killarney (35) and Listowel (37), under the auspices of the Earl Grey Orphan's scheme. The major-ity of these Kerry teenage girls were not in fact orphans as many had one parent alive. Their emigration has become known as the Earl Grey Scheme after its principal architect, Earl Grey, Secretary of State for the Colonies at the time of the Great Irish Famine. The Imperial government saw it as an opportunity on the one hand to clear out some of the overcrowded Irish workhouses and on the other, to provide much needed female labour and potential marriage part-ners for colonial settlers. In the two years that the scheme was in place, over 4000 Irish girls were sent to the other side of the world. This lecture explains the circumstances that led initially to the Kerry girls’ confinement in the workhouses, their selection and shipping to New South Wales and Adelaide, their subsequent apprenticeship, mar-riage and life in the colony. It sets out the terrible circumstances that they left behind in Kerry and Kay will tell you who the Dingle girls were, describe their journey on the ship to Australia and how they got on with their lives in the Colony. Kay Caball, is a native of North Kerry and a local historian. She has studied Genealogy & Family History at University of Limerick and written a number of local and family histories including The Kerry Girls: Emigration & the Earl Grey Scheme. She also set up and runs the specialist MyKerryAncestors.com website and works with the Expert Panel of Ancestor Network. She is author of Finding Your Ancestors in Kerry (Fly Leaf Press) -published August 2015.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights The featured film at the Dingle film club in the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 25th August will be “The Choir”. From ac-claimed director François Girard (The Red Violin) comes the inspirational story of a rebellious kid with a remarkable gift who is challenged by a demanding teacher to make the most unlikely of dreams come true. A stellar ensemble - including two-time Oscar-winner Dustin Hoffman, Oscar-winner Kathy Bates, two-time Emmy winner Eddie Izzard, three-time Oscar-nominee Debra Winger, Josh Lucas (A Beautiful Mind) and Kevin McHale (Glee) - headline a cast that also introduces an exciting group of newcomers as the young singers who battle each other as they take their boychoir to the competitive heights. This is a delightful musical drama with a sublime musical score.

The following week on Tuesday 1st September the feature will be the fantastically titled “A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence”. This Swedish comedy-drama which won the Golden Lion Award for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival takes us on a kaleidoscopic tour of the hu-man condition in reality and fantasy, unfolding in absurdist episodes.

The journey unveils the beauty of sin-gle moments, the pettiness of others, life’s grandeur, and the humour and tragedy hidden within us all.

Glut Of Mackerel In DingleFrom “The Cornishman” Newspaper, 12th June 1884The recent glut of fish was not confined to West Cornwall. Indeed it seems that the bountiful yield of the sea, at several places and at the same time, tended altogether to clog the central markets and so to reduce the price of mackerel so much that they were sold for manure.

The correspondent of the Fish Trades Gazette at Dingle, Ireland, heads his last week’s contribution “The Mackerel fishery on the West coast of Kerry - 15,000 mackerel given away gratis to the general public - 50,000 mackeral split and salted by the Dingle Fishing Company - 10,000 mackerel sold by public auction on the Dingle Pier - 5,000 mackerel sold for three shillings and sixpence per 100 of 126 - the mackerel fleet, owing to the low price of fish, preparing to leave the coast of Kerry”

He then continues: - “ On Friday, May 30th, the Busy Bee, of Peel, put into Ventry Harbour with 15,000 mackerel; but as the steamers were gone away loaded, and as the fish were “over day” they had to be given away, gratis, to all comers. A small fishing steamer, the Lady Loch, of Peel, put into Dingle with 9,000 mackerel the same day which were sold by public auction - a very unusual mode of selling fish - for 5s., 5s & 3d, and 5s & 6d, per hundred, all having been bought up by five persons on speculation. The “Lady Ventry” of Dingle, had 8,000 mackerel on board the same evening. Her fish had to be put into the white cellar. The fish of all other engaged boats had also to be turned into that place to be split and salted. Twelve women, with knives, were soon hard at work splitting the fish, and many youngsters were employed attending on them. Mrs. Catherine Long who has been acquainted with curing fish since her childhood, superinteded the work. One of the Scotch boats sold 5,000 mackerel to a fisherman, Timothy Brosnan, who also salted, for 3s & 6d per hundred. Owing to the low price of fish and warm weather the large mackerel fleet on the Western coast of Kerry will soon be leaving our shores.

Both students and teachers of Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh were delighted with the recent Leaving Certificate results. 25% of students achieved 500 points or more with 50% achieving over 400 points. Orlaith Rohan got 575 points and Zoe James got 540 points but all students were pleased that they got the required points for their respective courses. Teachers and management would like to thank all students for their fantastic attitude since 1st year and the respect they have shown our school during their time with us. We wish them continued success in the future.

Swimming from Uruguay to Argentina

Nuala MooreTime flies and as I walk back up Green Street I have to remind myself that 2 weeks ago I was in Argentina- part of a team to swim not only in the Perito Moreno Glacier but also a member of the first team to swim across the Rio de la Plata, one of the biggest river deltas in the world. 20 countries and 48 swimmers partook, including many first timers to big wa-ter so it was a wonderful achievement - 48km as the crow flies and over 60km swam over 20 hours all culminating into swimming the final 500m into the port of Buenos Aires carrying our flags.

The organiser of the event Matias Ola is a long time friend who has also completed the Bering Strait Relay and under his mission of Uniting the World it was wonderful to have an Uruguayan swimmer Adriano Motto start the swim with Matias from Argentina, with 3 swimmers from USA, Chile and Russia tak-ing the initial miles out from the coast. We travelled at 2am to meet the group and I was selected to start the changeover with a swim-mer from Latvia and the Czech Republic so it was a supreme honour to take that hando-ver. Our rescue cover was the Argentinean Perfectura (Coastguard) and the ship and 3 Zodiacs covered our every move. You can

always give 100% when you have good eyes on you.

The water was brown and thick-initially i was concerned. Being so brown I was a bit nerv-ous being aware of city pollution-close to the city we had to swim without opening our mouths!! The river was very turbulent with waves crashing into themselves and immedi-ately I knew this would not be a cut and dry swim. These swims across deltas are messy and we had to swim up North West to swim across - 48km at an average of 3km per hour would be a 12 hour swim. I prepared for the day although nothing ever goes to plan and we were here to complete it so as long as the Coast Guard felt we were not in difficulty, our

only challenge was to keep going.

I discovered that the Rio de la Plata is one of the biggest river deltas in the world-over

200,000 tons of sand is taken from the river each year. This sand is dried and this sand is used to build Buenos Aires so it is a huge valuable asset. The river is primarily 12 foot deep all this information changes how you approach the challenge. There is nothing to fear from sand or shallow so committing to the swim was easy.

The relay rotated swimmers and as the night fell it was wonderful watching Buenos Aires reeling itself towards us. It's so funny thinking “I'm swimming to Buenos Aires!”. I really loved the night swim and I was delighted when the ferryboat turned off it's main light and I swam in silence just following the main Coast Guard ship and neared the port of Buenos Aires. A massive current running North of the port of the River forced the team to use swims from some speed merchants. We must have looked hilarious -if on a Friday night on the port you were out for a few drinks and a group of 20 swimmers were swimming towards you carry-ing country flags.. I am sure you would rethink your tipple.. !! It was an amazing achievement of team-work and to think that a Navy Boat reversed the whole way from Colonia del Sac-ramento Uruguay to Buenos Aires Argentina for 24 hrs keeping it's watch on us.

From there we headed south to the Glacier of Perito Moreno and there we had a phenom-enal experience of swimming over a day at the Glacier again under the watchful eye of the Perfectura. So grateful for such wonderful experiences. Time now for a break.

Aerial Flow Yoga

Ilonka Miklosi

How about 'chilling' in a beautiful soft Hammock suspended only a few feet off the ground? Being cradled, cocooned in a soft satin cloth. Or would you like to do some gentle moves and stretches with the help of gravity to relieve back strain ? Maybe you'd even like to hang upside down to get the immediate benefits of spinal and joint decompression, resulting into natural rea-lignment of the body . Or simply just increasing your range of motion and flexibility with less effort and strain and practising advanced or challenging yoga postures with more ease and correct alignment. Aerial Flow Yoga can make all this and more possible - It's an amazing new style of Yoga! A total Body and Mind Workout! It combines classical Yoga with ele-ments of Dance,Pilates and Acrobatics.

The traditional movements are practised in a special aerial silk fabric hammock which can hold up to 450kg.

The benefits of inversions in Yoga have been known for years. Inver-sions help stimulate and refresh the various systems in the body . Hence the rejuvenating effect. The circulatory, digestive and endo-crine systems are all effected.

Further Benefits of Aerial Flow Yoga include:

* Decompressing the ppine while re-aligning the vertebrae -joints , relieving pressure and creating space

Farming News Louis MurchanExtension To Knowledge Transfer Advisor Registration DeadlineThe deadline for applications under advisor registration of Knowledge Transfer Groups would be extended until 11 September. Department approved facilitators should register their proposed Knowledge Trans-fer Groups on the Department’s on-line facility for the dairy, beef and equine sectors.Knowledge Transfer is one of a suite of measures included under the Ru-ral Development Programme 2014-2020 and will involve the formation and administration of knowledge transfer groups across a range of sec-tors. Funding of €100m under the Rural Development Programme has been allocated for 27,000 farmers participating for 3 years in Knowledge Transfer Groups across the dairy, beef, equine, sheep, tillage and poultry sectors. The measure is co-funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Ru-ral Development (EAFRD). The on-line registration process provides the opportunity for DAFM approved facilitators to apply to run dairy, beef and equine Knowledge Transfer Groups. Since the registration process opened, interest levels in the Knowledge Programme has been consider-able. This reflects the intent of advisors and farmers alike to improve on-farm profitability and sustainability through farmer meetings run by ad-visors and involving the exchange of information and best practices.Facilitators and vets will also assist participating farmers in the comple-tion of a tailored Farm Improvement Plan that will address issues such as profitability, sustainability, animal health and welfare and farm safety. The Knowledge Transfer Group application process will result in the ap-proval of advisors to run Knowledge Transfer Groups under the sectors for which they have successfully applied. Following the approval of advi-sors detailed Scheme Terms and Conditions will be made available and farmers will, at that stage, be able to contact approved advisors from a list published on the Department’s website with the intention of joining a group to participate in Knowledge Transfer. The full Terms and Condi-tions and list of approved advisors will be made available as soon as pos-sible after the 11th September closing date for the receipt of Knowledge Transfer Group applications. Farmer information meetings will also be held at this time.New €17M Pig & Poultry Scheme Under TAMS IiThough there are not many connected with pigs and poultry produc-tion in Mid and West Kerry, there are those involved in this sector and this should be of interest to them. A new TAMS II Scheme for Pig and Poultry investments. This investment of €17m reflects the Department’s ongoing commitment to the growth potential of this important sector and to the modernisa-tion of farming in Ireland. It is hoped that pig and poultry farmers will look very seriously at the opportunities offered by this new scheme.A total of €395m has been made available for TAMS II schemes over the course of the RDP period, with some €17m earmarked for the pig and poultry sector. The new scheme is being co-funded by the European Un-ion.The areas of investment available include: medicine dispenser units, wa-ter meters, solar panels, heat recovery units/heat pumps, energy efficient boilers, feed system upgrades (for medication reduction and energy ef-ficiency), energy efficient upgrade for farrowing house, weaner housing, fattener housing, poultry house and disease reduction facilities for exist-ing poultry houses. The scheme is open to all farmers who meet the eligibility criteria, offer-ing a standard rate of 40% on investment up to a ceiling of €80,000. The first tranche of applications will run for three months, closing towards the end of October. All applications must be made online, either by the farmer or an adviser authorised to act on his or her behalf. Applications can be made under agfood.ie by registered users of the Department’s website. Scheme de-tails for TAMS II and specifications for buildings are available on the De-partment’s website:€5M In New Scheme For Organic Processing SectorYet another scheme has been announced with the opening of the new Grant Aid Scheme for the Development of the Organic off-farm Process-ing Sector with immediate effect. This new scheme, which is wholly ex-chequer-funded, runs for the lifetime of the Rural Development Pro-gramme and will support investments for off-farm projects. Processors can apply for grants of up to €500,000 for investment in facilities for the processing, preparation, grading, packing and storage of organic prod-

ucts with minimum level of investment in excess of €3,000. €5m has been earmarked for the new scheme over its lifetime. The purpose of the scheme is to promote and develop the organic sector, and as an opportunity for the Irish agri-food sector in general. It is a fur-ther initiative to help existing organic processors meet the growing de-mand for organic food, both in Ireland and abroad.Substantial support for organic farmers already exists through the new TAMS Organic Capital Investment Scheme which was launched recent-ly and this new off-farm scheme now offers similar support for the organ-ic processing sector.Copies of the terms and conditions of the new Grant Scheme, together with application forms, are available from the Organic Farming Unit, De-partment of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Johnstown Castle, Wex-ford. Email: [email protected] Phone: 053-9163400Fertilizer ApplicationThe last allowed application of chemical fertiliser for 2013 is the 15th of September unless there is an extension by the Minister of Agriculture. This deadline will be very quick coming so every farmer should target ar-eas on the farm that they will fertilize before this deadline and get it ap-plied in a bid to build up reserves on the farm that can be grazed if the weather allows. This will all help to reduce the fodder shortage for the up and coming winter.Late SilageMany are trying to ensure enough silage/fodder for the coming winter season. The brilliant summer weather had the disadvantage of mean-ing that fertilizer uptake in soil wasn’t as expected. Those still hoping to make silage in September should consider a 1 bag per ac dressing of CAN, or as 25 to 27 % nitrogen compound fertilizer, to ensure good grass growth. However, this is weather dependant, and you need a suitable soil moisture content to allow the allow the fertilizer to “dissolve” into the soil, for easy uptake.Sheep Notes: Lamb Preformance:- Lambs on grass alone should be growing at over 150g per day post weaning, with a target of about 200g per day or 1.4kg per week. You will only know if you are on target by weighing some un-finished lambs. You need to put a permanent mark or tag on these lambs, as you will need to re-weigh the same lambs a few weeks later. Then cal-culate the growth rate per day. This is a simple task on most farms as lambs are being gathered regularly for drafting. When lambs are not per-forming well, you need to ask why. If the problem is:• shortageofgrassforlambs-applyadditionalfertiliser,especiallyni-trogen, but also phosphate and potash if soil levels are low. Sell lambs immediately as they become fit for slaughter. Sell cull ewes. Consider selling store lambs to reduce your stocking rate.• Poorqualitygrass,containingstemand/ordeadmaterial-Thekeytomaintaining sward quality is to graze out pastures well with adult sheep in good condition or cattle. Alternatively, some topping may be needed. In a rotational grazing system, allow adequate time for the build-up of quality leafy pasture of 8-9cm before moving in lambs to graze. This will lead toimproved lamb performance.• Roundworm-Havesomefaecalsamplessenttothelaboratorytoidentify if there is a worm burden and dose accordingly.Maurice O’ Connell Agricultural Advisor, (1954 – 2015).The recent passing of Maurice O’Connell must be acknowledged in these lines, as anyone involved in farming in Kerry for the past thirty years will have crossed paths with him, and be better off, as a result, from the expe-rience. Though ill for over a year, his clients were not far from his thoughts dur-ing his own troubles. He was a man dedicated to farmers in the county, and particularly those of West Kerry and spent his life travelling through-out the peninsula working with a large section of the farming communi-ty. He once described himself as a “GP”, not a consultant, solving people’s problems and getting them out of trouble. This is a mantra followed by many of his protégé. He never took on a job that he couldn’t finish, and always sought second opinions if there was ever a doubt about the solu-tion. Having spent a few years working beside the man, it was a learning ex-perience, a pleasure and very often, a lot of fun. He was still a young man and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts go out to his wife and family. For further information contact:- Louis Murchan 087-2857938

Life Beyond The Leaving Cert

Melanie Mullan

There’s a certain freedom to finishing school. No more uniforms. No more getting your parents to write you notes as to why you didn’t do your homework. No more forging your parents signature as to why you were absent that day last week! At the same time it can be quite overwhelming. Come mid August you’ve completed some of the so-called biggest exams of your life, you’ve got the results and it’s on to planning what’s next. For some of you, you’ve known from day one what you were going to do. You’ve already packed your bags and are half way out the door to your new house and exciting college journey. For others, the ‘what you want to be when you grow up’ job doesn’t have quite the same appeal now that you are the grown up. My dream job of being a banker just wasn’t quite that appealing by the time I turned 15 or 16 - especially when I realised I couldn’t wear the tutu that I had worn when practicing all those years earlier. This can make times like this a little more daunting and somewhat stressful. All of a sudden your 13 or 14 years of education is coming to an end and you are supposed to decide what you want to do with the rest of your life? You can’t even decide what to have for breakfast! The Leaving Cert can leave you feeling lost, frustrated, confused and overwhelmed. I did mine 8 years ago. The only thing I 100% knew about when I fin-ished school, was that I was going to take a year out to travel the world. I had that decided from age 10. After that I had no clue where I wanted to go or what I wanted to study. I was always changing my mind over the years. At times I wanted to study physiotherapy. I’m sure teaching crossed my mind at some stage - who doesn’t want 3 months holidays? But none of them really stuck - as much as I did want them to. I remem-ber coming home from school one day really angry after listening to our Principal talk to us about how we had a reputation to hold up with our exams. He listed off previous students who got these points, got into those colleges, and how we should be aiming for the same thing. I couldn’t even figure out what I wanted for myself, and I then had the added pressure of keeping up appearances for a man that more than likely didn’t even know my name.

Trips to guidance councillors didn’t help me either. According to the aptitude tests we all take at some point or another, I was good at sciences. In my mocks I got 6% in my Physics exam and 36% in my Biol-ogy. I had no interest in physics, but took it on because I was supposed to be good at it. I wasn’t bad at school, my grades were generally pretty good and I worked hard, but it’s difficult to study when you don’t know what you’re studying for.

I applied for the CAO with the plan to defer my course for a year. The day the offers came out I knew I didn’t want to be studying the course I got offered. I applied again before I went travelling. It was an agree-ment I made with my Dad. I still didn’t know what I wanted to do, but figured I would try something else. Go to college, get my degree and THEN I could do whatever I wanted because I’d have my degree. I lasted one year in college. I failed two of my repeats that I had studied so hard to try pass. My heart just wasn’t in it. I spent more time editing photos from travelling then I did on assignments. I remember tell-ing my parents that if I didn’t pass I wasn’t going to repeat because it wasn’t what I wanted to do anyway.

I was back to square one again. I applied for the CAO one last time the following year. This time to do photography. One college rejected my portfolio and the other passed it. Combined with my leaving cert I had just about enough to get in - until the required amount went up 25 points that year. The saying “Third time lucky” clearly didn’t apply to me!

At 20 years old, I figured out that I wanted to be doing something to do with photography. I wasn’t sure what area and I wasn’t sure how. I’m still on that journey. It has taken me from Dublin to London to Cork and now to Dingle. In that time I have covered fashion photography to food photography to portraits to music. I’ve also taken on other areas. I’ve done courses in web design, and right now I am studying journal-ism in an online course, and hope to be able to combine this with my photography someday. I work in jobs I don’t always love, while I keep

pushing to get into the area I do love. I do sometimes wonder if going back to college would make the journey that bit quicker, but I’m still not sure if I’m ready for it.

I have friends who have gone to college and are finally getting to do what they have always wanted. I have friends that have gone to college and started out in doing what they always wanted only to realise that it actually wasn’t for them. Others have gotten their degrees and gone on to do something completely different. Some have 2 degrees in dif-ferent areas and still don’t know what they want to do. It is not easy.

If you are one of the lucky ones that knows what it is you want, then I couldn’t be happier for you. College life is fun and an adventure - enjoy it! If you, like me, have no clue what you want to do - that’s ok. College does not suit everyone. It may not suit you right now, but in 7 years time, or even next year, it may be the perfect thing for you. It may never suit you and that’s ok too. Some people don’t suit studying, lectures and assignments - going straight out to work and learning that way may suit them 10 times better. Don’t get caught up in doing something to make others happy or because it’s what you think you should be doing. In the last 10 years, my mother has gone back to college twice. She has gotten a degree and a diploma. She is 61 years old. If you decide in 40 years time that you are ready for college, that is ok too. I might even see you there then!

Scéala ón Díseart

Pádraig Ó Fiannachta

Is trua liom gur chaitheas éirí as An Sagart, ráitheachán beag Chu-mann na Sagart a eagrú agus a fhoilsiú. Bhí sin ar siul agam ar feadh ceithre bliana agus daichead. Níor éirigh linn comharba a fháil orm. Is dócha go raibh sé ceart agam éirí as i bhfad roimhe sin. Bhíodh cóipeanna breise ar fáil i séipéil pharóiste an Daingin agus Bhaile an Fhirtéaraigh in aisce i gcúl na séipéal. Is dócha go mbíonn nithe ag baint leis na paróistí agam níos tráthúla sa coicíseán breá seo. An scéal mór sa dá pharóiste ar ndóigh is ea go bhfuil an Canónach Tomás Ó Luanaigh ag imeacht ón nDaingean go paróiste Fosa i gcóngar Chill Airne, mar a mbeidh sé ina shagart paróiste. Braith-imid uainn é agus guímid gach beannacht air i mbun a dhualgais ansiúd. Ba bhreá bríomhar a bhí sé anseo ár spreagadh agus ár misniú. Ad multos et felicisimos annos—go raibh blianta fada fé ghrásta Dé agus fé lúcháir aige. Go bhfeice sé Ciarraí go buacach i bPáirc an Chrócaigh i mbliana. Cuirimid na trucailí fáilte roimh ár sagart paróiste nua, an tAthair Seosamh Ó Beaglaoi ón nGarrán a tháínig in áit an Athar Tomás i gCill Choimín nuair a tháinig seisean chugainne. Bhí aithne mhaith agam air i Maigh Nuad marar chaith sé cúig bliana ag staidéar na n-ealaíon agus na diagachta nuair a d’fhreagair sé an ghairm chun na sagartóireachta agus é faoin am sin ag múíneadh scoile i gcathair Luimní.

Fág go bhfuil deireadh le An Sagart, táim ag leanúint orm leis an bhfoilsitheoireacht. Tá Léachtaí Cholm Cille XLV foilsithe agam go luath i mbliana; lean sárleabhar é sin Saol agus Saothar Phiarais Mhic Gearailt leis an Dr. Breandán Ó Cróinin atá ina léachtóir le Gaeilge i gColáiste Mhuire gan Smál, Luimneach. Bhí aithne mhaith againne i mBaile Móir ar a athair críonna, Diarmaid Ó Cróinín a thagadh go Tigh Cháití Shé ag foghlaim Gaeilge nuair a bhíos i bhfad níos óige. Tugaim na leabhair go léir a fhoilsím do leabhar-lann Chiarraí sa Daingean le cur le mo bhailiúchán ansiúd. Ní féidir leabhar a thógaint ar iasacht as an mbailiúchán sin gan cead uaim féin fad is beo dom ach tá seomra dá gcuid féin acu le bord agus cathaoireacha do léitheoirí. Tá leabhar eile ó pheann Phádraig Uí Éalaithe sa phreas fé láthair An Blascaod trí Fhuinneog na Scoile, bláthfhleasc aoibhinn de sríbhinní a mháthar a chaith tamall ag múíneadh i scoil an Bhlascaoid. Tá sé chomh agam an Magnum Opus le Máirín Uí Chonchúir atá le foilsiú againn roimh dheireadh na bliana, Tuir agus Crainn, a lua le go mbeadh bialanna an Daingin ag réiteach áit fé leith dó mar beidh sé mór toirtiúil lena lán grianghra-fanna.

News from the DíseartThe big news for many of our read-ers is that Canon Tomás Ó Luanaigh is leaving us, not for retirement but to become parish priest of Fossa. We will miss his kind and gentle pastoral care and leadership. We wish him many happy years in his new parish where he will be work-ing on his own as he has been in Dingle for some years. He is being replaced by Fr. Seosamh Ó Beaglaoi {Joe Begley) from our neighbouring parish. He was a national degreed teacher before he answered the call to the priesthood. As a priest he taught in St. Brendans for some time before being appointed parish priest of Kilcummin. Cuirimid céad míle fáilte roimis agus guímid saol fada fé shláine agus fé ghrá Dé dó.

School Lunches - Beyond The Ham Sandwich!

Irene Ní Fhlannúra

Back to school and so much to do - uniforms, books, travel arrange-ments and a new routine - the humble lunch box is often at the end of a long list of things to do. For most, the lunch box fills a gap between breakfast and dinner, and once it staves off hunger at school - job done!

Nothing could be further from the truth. Lunch and the mid-morning snack need to fuel the child - both physically and mentally - the type of fuel used has a huge influence on performance in and out of the classroom. Good food choices provide our young ones with sustained energy, improve concentration levels and satisfy hunger - the food they eat can also improve immunity and stave off many of the colds, flus and bugs that plague many school children during the term. The opposite effects of nutritionally poor food include fluctuations in energy levels ranging from lethargy and fatigue to hyperactivity and restlessness, flagging concentration and poor recall as well as constant colds and flu symptoms right throughout the school year. If there was a magic pill that would ensure our children were healthy and alert at school there is no doubt, as parents, we would be stocking up now. The choices we make for them when packing their lunch boxes IS that magic pill - so here are a few ideas to get all they need in a handy, ready-to-eat meal.

All growing children need carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats as well as minerals and vitamins to sustain good health and energy levels. Carbohydrates provide the fuel for the body- much like petrol in a car. They are found most abundantly in sugar, grains, fruit and vegetables. Carbohydrates convert to blood glucose (sugar) once eaten which in turn, is used to supply energy to the body. The type of carbohydrate eaten influences the efficiency of energy supplied. Sugar, a simple carbohydrate - provides a quick burst of energy, most likely followed by an energy slump and a craving for more sugar. Sugar provides no vitamins and minerals, needed for immunity and depletes our stores of vitamin C. Immunity may be suppressed by 50% for up to four hours following a sugary snack - ample time for bacteria and viruses to move in and set up home! Refined grains such as white flour, white pasta and white rice products convert to sugar quickly in the body, much like sugar itself and are devoid of naturally occurring minerals and vitamins, necessary for the immune system. Wholegrain foods provide a steadier release of energy, fibre, minerals and vitamins and are a better choice than white sliced bread or baguettes when it comes to sandwiches. Whole fruit (not fruit juices) and vegetables are also healthy sources of carbohydrates. The more colour and variety of carbohydrates the better - so mix and match for an interesting and healthy lunch box.

Fresh and dried fruit are readily eaten by most children, but vegetables are often left lacking in the lunch box. Grilled peppers, grated carrots, shredded lettuce or baby spinach leaves, roast vegetables, olives, puréed vegetable spread are all interesting ways to get the veggies in sandwiches, salads, pitta pockets or tossed with wholegrain pasta or noodles for a change from sandwiches.

Protein provides the building blocks of all cells in the body and necessary to fuel growth and important for the immune system. Best sources come from meat, seafood, nuts, seeds, cheese and eggs. Al-ways choose these products as close to their natural state as possible. Scientific studies have made definite links between processed meats such as luncheon meats, cured meats and packaged deli meat prod-ucts and cancer of the colon and stomach. Reduce your child’s expo-sure to carcinogenic meats by using roast meat slices, unsalted nut and seed butters, good quality tuna or salmon, egg and real cheese as their protein source. Bean spreads such as hummus are also a good source of protein. Adding nuts and seeds to lunches provide healthy fats and helps satisfy appetite. Oily fish, not only provide protein but also supply essential fatty acids, such as omega 3 - important for all cells, but particularly beneficial to brain health and development. Dress raw or roast vegetables with flax oil or use when making dips such as hum-mus, guacamole and nut spreads. These are inexpensive when made at home and can be tailored to suit your child’s taste.

Don’t forget to include a bottle of water. Fatigue is one of the first symptoms of dehydration, particularly in stuffy classrooms and with increased physical activity. There is no need for sugary drinks, sports drinks or fruit juices/smoothies at school - water or cooled fruit teas (for taste) provides adequate hydration for kids - anything else is just a costly marketing myth!

Pulling it all together may be a daunting task but one that will not only provide your child with great food and super health but also a solid foundation of healthy eating habits that will be with them for life!

Tyrone’s Hopes Undermined By Negative Publicity

Tadhg Evans

‘I have to say on behalf of Tiernan McCann... if he had the chance again he would have re-sponded differently to what happened to him and we all accept that’. At that point, Mickey Harte should have stopped talking. He didn’t.

‘I just want to say that he wasn’t entirely to blame for all of this. If the player who raised his hand had chosen to do something differently, then the outcome would have been different as well.’

Oh dear. Tyrone can play football, but they ain’t great at public relations. Nobody likes them, and they don’t care. But maybe they should.

It’s unlikely that Eamon Fitzmaurice’s men will find their levels undermined on Sunday on account of matches played during the nough-ties. Kerry supporters still break into tears at the mention of Tyrone, but the players they back have no reason to. Kerry have not been slapped by the Red Hand in any game since the 2008 All-Ireland final, and Tyrone cling to very few remnants of their greatest team. They need every advantage they can obtain to conquer the Kingdom on Sunday. Their recent misdeeds might compromise that mission.

Tyrone have been here before. Time and time again, they provide the same defence. ‘Everybody else is at it.’ True, admittedly. Tiernan McCann isn’t the first man to drop like the barrel of bricks from The Dubliner’s ‘Why Paddy’s Not at Work Today’ without valid rea-son for doing so. Ask Donncha O’Connor what the main factor was in his sending off during Cork’s 2008 semi-final with Kerry, and he’ll cite the theatrics of Aidan O’Mahony. In terms of time wasting and destruction of momentum, Tyrone are far from the sole transgressors. Mayo were overtly cynical in closing out their 2012 semi-final with Dublin. Twelve months later, Dublin administered more rugby tackles in the final ten minutes of the All-Ireland final than what we’ll see at next month’s World Cup. Many more examples are stored away in the annals of history, freely accessible to those who seek them.

Clearly then, there’s truth in what Tyrone say. How relevant is it in their quest for absolution? Not relevant at all, actually. In fact, Mickey Harte’s ridiculous defence of McCann is only likely to compound their image problem, a problem that matters more than they seem to realise.

Tyrone might well be suffering at the hands of media bias. They were continuously branded as a dull footballing outfit throughout the noughties, largely based on their aesthetically awkward 2003 win. Their style of football on the way to victories in 2005 and 2008 was of a far more exhilarating variety, but reputations are stubborn things. Kerry produced the most turgid winning performance of recent years in grounding out last year’s All-Ireland final, but maintained a status as purveyors of sublime football, and only sublime football. Hypocrisy

can be staggering.

But media prejudice or not, Tyrone have been spotted near more crime scenes over the last twelve years than most counties have in their entire history. The 2003 semi-final, the battle of Omagh, the Derrytresk saga and the Ca-vanagh pull-down all rank highly in a list of the most divisive episodes of the last fifteen years. More recently, the Red Hand County has been equally influential in the production of nega-tive headlines. Tyrone’s Under-21 manager was refused entry to the Tipperary dressing room following the teams’ All-Ireland final earlier this year. Their Ulster senior championship game with Donegal was noted for its cynicism, while two members of their minor team were accused, whether rightly or wrongly, of the most heinous vulgarity. Throw the McCann incident into the basket, and 2015 has been another unmitigated disaster for Tyrone’s PR wing. Tyrone may not have been entirely to blame in many of the aforementioned incidents, if at all, but their status as the com-mon denominator might not sit well with

many, including those possessing meaning-ful power.

They don’t help their situation. Philip Jordan labelled calls for Tiernan McCann to apolo-gise as ‘ridiculous’. Perhaps he’s right, but if McCann handled the media in a mature way in response to his actions, whether sincere in his words or otherwise, it could have been of benefit to both himself and his county as they step up their search for Sam. It didn’t happen, and he was lashed with a somewhat severe eight week ban. Mickey Harte could have easily, and should have, left his response to the McCann situation at the sentence quoted at this article’s outset. What an infinitely more pleasant aftertaste that would have left. To attribute equal blame to Darren Hughes, guilty on that occasion of nothing more than naivety, was a move that only incited the mob. His point claiming that the transgression of Paul Finlay was more serious was neither untrue, uninteresting nor irrelevant. But it’s unlikely to change public perception of his charges, and attempts to undermine the significance of McCann action did little to alter widely held views, certainly not in a positive sense.

Does it matter what people think of them? By Sunday, they could well find out that it might. Much attention was drawn to Mayo’s cynicism in the 2012 semi-final, and they could hardly catch a break from Maurice Deegan three weeks later. Tyrone themselves challenged Mayo for long stretches in their 2013 All-Ireland semi-final, but had to play

against sixteen men in the aftermath of their controversial quarter-final against Monaghan. They are not without chance against Kerry in three day’s time, but they might need every advantage they can get. To lose the benefit of Deegan’s doubt could prove crucial.

Tyrone are a fine footballing county. Their performance against Monaghan was consist-ently strong, and at times excellent. While Kildare were bizarrely touted as possessing the ability to beat the Kingdom, such lavish praise is more easily associated with the proud Red Hand. But, whether rightly or wrongly, Tyrone’s reputation precedes their every move. What’s more, it is of far more importance than they may seem to realise.

But media prejudice or not, Tyrone have been spotted near more crime scenes over the last twelve years than most counties have in their entire history.

   Dingle Open Mic

The last two Open Mics of the season will take place this week (Thurs-day) and next week (Thursday 27th August) at the Wren's Nest. We have enjoyed some memorable performances of course, but then every Open Mic night is memorable in its own way. Just giving people an opportunity to perform anything at all to a small but attentive audi-ence is very satisfying and the result is a very genuine level of perfor-mance. Age is no barrier, one amazing performance was by a nine year old girl who played Ludovico Einaudi's "Primavera" note perfect without sheet music. We have enjoyed storytellers from Wales and listened to songs in Arabic, Hungarian, Spanish, Scots and Welsh Gaelic as well as our own Irish Gaelic. You can also visit Dingle Open Stage on Facebook to view over a hundred video performances by locals and visitors alike. Hope to see you soon.

Bawnie O’Driscoll Memorial Soccer Tournament A big thanks to everybody who showed up and supported this great cause even though the weather was not ideal. €1335 was raised on the day and was donated to Acquired Brain Injury Ireland. There was some great football played under treacherous conditions. Liselton were the overall winners, beating Castlegregory Celtic Fc in the final in a tight game. Liseltons David Hennessy claimed the tournaments best player with some unbelievable saves between the sticks while Camp Uniteds James Crean was top goalscorer. A major thanks to Del O Shea and John Bubbles Hegarty for volunteering to officiate, it couldn’t have gone so smoothly without them. Another thanks has to go to Camp Community Council for donating the delicious food on the day. It was a day where everybody came to remember a great sportsman, friend, uncle, brother, grandson and son. Bawnie will always be in our hearts and occasions like last Saturday show how many peoples hearts he has touched. From all the O’Driscolls thank you everyone it was greatly appreciated.

Heritage Week is organised by the Heritage Council, and there is a special website, www.heritageweek.ie, which you can consult to find out details of what is happening in your area. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, in conjunc-tion with Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, has hosted many events over the years, and 2015 will be no different. This year, as always, there will be FREE ENTRY to Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne on both Sundays, 23 and 30 August. A bilingual Guided Heritage Walk will take place on Wednesday 26 August, leaving the museum at 2.00pm returning c. 5.00pm. That same evening, in the Lárionad For-bartha Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh (i.e. the new building on the Dún Chaoin side of the village, behind the new playground), there will be a talk, as Gaeilge, ‘Logainmneacha Chnoc Bréa-nainn’, and the following day, Thursday, a walk with the same theme will take place leaving Seana-Scoil an Chuasa, Baile na bhFionnúrach at 1.00 pm. On Friday, 28 August, again in the Lárionad Forbar-tha in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh at 8.00 pm, Archaeologist Claire Cotter will give a talk, in English, ‘Living on the Wild Atlantic

Way 1000 years ago’. Claire worked on the Archaeological Survey of the Dingle Peninsula, and more recently has been working with the Discovery Programme. She has recently published several books on her excavations at Dún Aonghasa on Inis Mór, and other sites on the Aran Islands. It will be great to have her views on how life was for our ancestors! All these events are FREE, and we are grateful for grant-aid from the Heritage Council, and the Heritage Office and the Community Support Fund of Kerry County Council. Also taking place on Sunday August 23 is a Whale Watch at Clogher Head and at Brandon Point, from 2.00-5.00, organised by the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, and the Dingle Historical Society will host a talk about the

‘Dingle Girls’ in Benner’s Hotel at 8.00 on Thursday 27, so there is plenty to see and do!

Further information about Heritage Week can be obtained from Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh (13km/8 miles west of Dingle, www.westkerrymuseum.com). The museum is openeverydayfrom10.00am–5.30pm.Tel:066-9156333 or [email protected]. There is also a café with fresh baking daily and a bookshop, and free Wi-Fi for customers. Solar Systems

Tom Kennedy

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more ef-ficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynam-ic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then trans-ferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of en-ergy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Betsie Konink

Today it is quiet in the community. Everybody has gone to the beach to enjoy the beautiful weather, the water, play games and try out the kayaks and I am sitting in our nice new office to write this article, for once I am on time, we keep on forgetting to write these days. The summer has been a busy time with people going on holiday, visitors, a changeover of volunteers, and lots to do in the garden. We had a great gooseberry and blackcurrant harvest and are now learning many dif-ferent ways of preparing courgettes…

I am getting ready for my sabbatical. In a few weeks’ time I will be going away for half a year. I will be walking the Camino to Santiago and have a bit more time to spend with family and friends. The past 12 years have been very busy. I had hoped that the houses in town and the new house on the land would have been finished and moved into, but all good things take time. We only just got the keys for the town houses. And some repair work will have to be done before people can move in. The house on the land is a hive of activity. The plastering up-stairs is almost finished and the tiling of the bathrooms has just started this week, downstairs there is still all the plastering to do and lots of other work. It is a big house and to build it up to HIQA standards adds a lot of complications and extra work.

We have just heard that our friends from England who have spent a few weeks almost every year with us to help us building the potting shed, farm, extension of Tigheen, tea kitchen and many more projects over the years, are coming again in October to build for us one of the kitchens for the new house and make shelves and cupboards…This will be a great help.

Thank you all who gave so generously at the church collection in Bal-lyferriter. We collected €203.79.

Wishing you all a beautiful autumn

Study locally in Dingle with the Institute of Public Administration, accredited by UCD

Second Chance Education Opportunity In DingleIn the past week, so much has been said and written about the pressures of the Leaving Cert and the points system. Now comes an announcement about a ‘second chance’ education opportunity in Dingle – the Institute of Public Administration and local volun-tary group Conasc have joined forces to offer a top quality hon-ours degree program, which can be studied through tutorials here in Dingle, blended with some week-end seminars in Dublin. The degree is open to everyone, even those who have not attained a Leaving Cert. “Quite a number of the Graduates of this degree left school very early,” declared IPA Senior Lecturer Rochie Holo-han, “they did not enjoy their early school experiences, yet they coped effortlessly with the study when they returned for a ‘second chance’, usually in their thirties. In fact, all Students quickly learn to enjoy their new learning skills and make many new friends along the way.” Many of the Graduates go on to become ac-countants or HR or marketing professionals.

Year One of the degree is a Certificate in Business Studies, this is being offered as a part-time course from this September to April 2016, with weekly tutorials in each of the four subjects. The IPA prides itself on its flexibility, helping Students with busy jobs and family lives to gain an advanced professional top quality qualifica-tion. Effectively, Students get to study at their own pace in their own time. “There is no doubt that an accredited qualification is the best addition to any cv,” notes Conasc Director Máire Uí Lé-ime, “it opens opportunities for career advancement like nothing else.” The Year One Certificate Course costs €2,950. Máire was delighted to learn recently that the Department of Social Protec-tion can now finance this opportunity for up to ten Students in the Dingle area, under the Springboard + programme. An Informa-tion Evening is being held in An Mhainistir on John’s Street on next Monday 24th August at 7.30 pm sharp, to give details of the programme, all are welcome.

Computer MattersWhat is in an IP Address?

Joan Maguire

Everytime we connect a device to the Internet it has a unique number associated with it, this number is called an IP address and it gives the device an identity on the Internet so that you can send and receive information such as you do when you are taxing the car online or regis-tering a calf, or the many other activities that people do on a daily basis on the Internet.

Without a unique IP address on your machine, you will not be able to communicate with other devices, users, and computers on the Internet. You can look at your IP address as if it were a telephone number, each one being unique and used to identify a way to reach you and only you.

There are two types of IP address that are used on the Internet IPv4 and Ipv6, The first, and the version that the Internet and most routers are currently configured for, is IPv4 or Internet Protocol version 4. This ver-sion uses, for the technically minded, 32-bit addresses, which limits the amount of addresses to 4,294,967,296 possible unique addresses. And with the increase in the amount of devices connected to the Internet Ipv4 has outlived its usefulness. There simply are not enough addresses to go around.

Ipv6 the second type , utilizes 128-bit Internet addresses. Therefore, it can support 2¹²⁸ Internet addresses — 340,282,366,920,938,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 of them to be exact. This should keep us going for a while and supply enough addresses for all the items that are to be connected to the Internet.

As they are two different systems devices that work with IPv4 will not necessarily work with Ipv6. There is no need to take action at this point but it is a good thing to be aware that it is coming down the track. You might have noticed that your operating system says that it will connect to the Internet using IPv4 of IPv6. There will be change over and 2018 is the final date for switch over. That is a little bit away, so there is no need to be concerned.

Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Notes

Deirdre O’ Sullivan

Appropriate Football Gear: Can all underage team managers, trainers/coaches please ensure that all players representing Milltown /Castlemaine are dressed in club col-ours (Green and White socks and togs.) This is to avoid any inconven-ience prior to games. We would also ask parents/guardians of players to inform their children of this County Board Rule.

Senior Football League Round 9: Milltown/Castlemaine were away to Dingle on Saturday last August 15th at 7 p.m.Despite,fantastic home support, it was not enough to help secure a victory. Milltown Castlemaine were without some of their regulars from the start due to varying situations. The loss of Jack McCa-rthy in the first half and the joint loss of Donal Kelliher and Alan Looney in the second half through injury, made it impossible for the team to overcome a strong Dingle side. Despite being only 3 points behind at half time-Dingle were comprehensive winners on a score line of 4:16 to 9 points.

Junior Cup Football 2015:-Molyneaux Cup Milltown Castlemaine will be playing away to Dr. Crokes on Friday Au-gust 21st at 7 p.m. This is a knock out competition so your support will be much needed!

CAO:By now all our young students will have received their CAO offers. Best of luck with your decisions. There are so many ways of getting into your preferred career. Sometimes, the longer route may be the best route. Don’t give up!

Health and Safety. We ask you for your continued co operation when entering and leaving our GAA Grounds. In particular, we would request that all drivers use extreme caution and reverse into their parking space on arrival. We

are always committed to maintaining and improving the safety of all the people using our facilities. You are requested NOT to drive past the chained bollards. The spaces beyond this area are reserved for older people or for those using wheelchairs.

Lotto: The Lotto jackpot was not won –but there was 6 super consola-tion prizes on offer-2 x €50 to Patricia O Leary, Currow and Annette Coffey,Cappagh. 4 x €25 went to Pat Spring, Aubee, Mai and Anthony McKenna, Sean Collum, Ballyoughtra Heights and Sean Ban Hayes, Lyre

Our Lotto now stands at €6,600- next draw is on August 28th 2015, in The Castle Bar, Castlemaine. With college fees, school books and all the additional costs associated with returning to school looming, a €2 Lotto ticket is a worthwhile investment-it just might make you €6,600 richer!

Special thanks to our sponsors Mike O’ Shea and sons-Builders- Farran and also to our many loyal supporters and ticket sellers.

Round 7:Under 12’S-A and B Teams: Our Under 12’s- A and B teams are home to Laune Rangers Blue on this Friday August 21st AT 7 P.M. Please come along and support these young footballers and their management teams. Best of luck to you all!

Kerry Seniors: Best of luck to all in the forthcoming clash versus Tyrone… it will be a very exciting encounter no doubt! Let’s hope we will have a day out in Croke Park in September after the final whistle.

The article below first appeared in The Dingle Echo, the community news magazinepublishedbyÓgraanDainginin1985. The article below first appeared in The Dingle Echo,

Dingle Fire Brigade Rescues Boat Off Blaskets What a headline! But entirely true according to the local Fire Chief Tadhg Lynch. It happened a few years ago when a distress call was received from the Spailpín Fánach, a fishing vessel out of Caherciveen, which had struck a rock near one of the Blasket islands and was taking water fast. Six local firemen carried two powerful pumps on board the boat of Dingle fisherman Patsy Griffin and they set off to the rescue. They came upon the Spailpín Fánach, still afloat in total darkness, near Inis Mhicileáin and, despite heavy seas, the firemen were able to board her and set the pumps to work. Side by side the two vessels set a course for Dingle while the water was being pumped out of the South Kerry boat as fast as it was com-ing in. It was a night never to be forgotten by most of the firemen who were not experienced seamen and who wished they hadn’t eaten before setting off. Eventually, the rescue boat and the Spailpín Fánach reached Dingle pier in safety.

Pasta, Broccoli, and Cheddar Bake

Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery SchoolFor those out there who are heading to college maybe even for the first time, this recipe will prove that everyone can put to-gether a tasty nutritious meal regardless of your cooking skills. My first piece of advice for any student who is leaving home for the first time is: learn to cook, regardless of what you plan to study or become in the future, you will never regret it, you will en-joy food more and it will always stand to you forever. A few steps to get you start-ed: keep it simple, stock your cupboards with the essentials and cook the food you love eating. You will be surprised that if you spend a little time planning you will be able to put together a simple nutritious meal in a matter of minutes. If you want to learn more about how to prepare yourself to cook better during col-lege, why not join us at Dingle Cookery School on Friday 28th at 10am for a half day hands on cookery class where we will teach you the basics and provide you with

the skills to eat well on a budget?

Ingredients200g pasta shells 1-tablespoon butter 1-tablespoon flour 200ml Milk 100g Cheddar gratedPinch of ground nutmeg salt and pepper ½ head of broccoli cut into florets and cooked in boiling water for 2 minutes.

MethodTurn on the oven to 200°cFill a pot to ¾ way and add a good pinch of salt, bring to the boil and cook the pasta for 12-18 minutes (check the bag). Taste the paste and if there is a bite to it remove and strain the water. Meanwhile, heat the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the flour and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. If you do not want flour, leave it out and your sauce wont be as thick but still will be tasty.Whisk in the milk and cook and keep stirring, until it has slightly

thickened. This will take about 4 minutes.

Add over half of the cheese and stir it until has melted. Add some nutmeg, salt and pepper. Taste it to make sure you are happy with the sea-soning. Not to put it all together. Add all the ingre-dients together keeping back the last bit of cheese. Mix everything well and place in a dish that is suitable for the oven. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the pasta. Place in the oven and bake for about 10 minutes until it is golden.

Enjoy!!

In ainneoin na drochaimsire a bhí ann – bhí sé ag stealladh agus ag greadadh báistí gach lá den choicís a bhí mé ann, bhí mé ar muin na muice agus tá dea-chuimhní agam ar mo chuid ama í nGaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne leis na mic léinn éile. Bhí mé sa deisceart chun mo chuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú mar is foghlameoir teanga mé arís tar éis cúpla bliain amach as an méanscoil. Táim an-bhródúil as mo chuid Gaeilge agus bíonn an-iontas orm nuair a chloisim na laochra Gaeilge ag caint ar an raidió nó má bhím ag féa-chaint ar na cláracha faisnéise ‘s na cluichí spóirt ar TG4. Ní bhíonn a lán deiseanna agam i mo shaol i gCathair Chorcaí chun mo chuid Gaeilge neamhfhoirmeálta a úsáid le daoine eile ar an tsráid agus bhí mé an -shásta i gceartlár na Gaeltachta i nDaingean Uí Chúis ag tumadh mé féin sa Ghaeilge agus an maireachtáil ó lá go lá. Bhí sceitimíní orm nu-air a bhí mé ag labhairt Gaeilge, ag éisteacht leis na scéalta a bhí ag na daoine logánta a rugadh agus a tógadh i gCiarraí agus ag chun iarracht a dhéanamh leis an dteanga. Tá mó chuid Gaeilge ag dul ó neart go neart le hiarracht ‘s cleachtadh.

Nuair a bhí am saor agam, chuaigh mé ag tiomáint timpeall Cheann Sléibhe ar Shlí an Atlantaigh Fhiáin. Bhí alltacht orm nuair a chonaic mé na sléibhte gan aon dabht, is é Corca Dhiubhne an áit is áille, mórthai-bhsaí agus is iontaí in Éirinn. An rud is iontaí faoi Chorca Dhiubhne ná na radharcanna aoibhne, chomh maith le háille agus aoibhneas an dúlra atá ann. Tá an leithinis dubh le stair, cultúr agus Gaeilge (Gao-luinn i gCorca Dhiubhne). Tráthnóna amháin, shiúil mé suas an Cnoc na Ceathrún go dtí an Eask Tower. Stop mé ar bharr an chnoic mar bhí radharc ar Bhá an Daingin a bhainfeadh an anáil dom. Bhí mé i gcom-hlaudar le cúpla tréad caorach agus gabhar fiáin a bhí sna páirceanna timpeall an túir. Lá éile, thiomáin mé suas, mar an gcéanna, go dtí an Chonair. Níl aon fhocail agam chun cur síos ar na radharcanna a cho-naic mé anseo – bhí na radharcanna as an gConair gleoite, dochreidte agus pictiúrtha! Chaith mé dhá uair a chloig ag féachaint amach ón mbarr, ag tógaint grianghrafanna, ag caint le daoine eile a bhí ann agus ag smaoineamh ar áilleacht na tuaithe agus Chiarraí. Chuaigh mé go dtí Séipéilín Ghallarais, Caisleán na Min Airde agus Com Dhíneol freisin agus thóg mé cúpla míle grianghraif eile faoi na háiteanna seo. Fuair mé faoiseamh, siocháin agus síth nuair a chonaic mé na tonnta ollmhóra ag bualadh isteach go dtí an trá bheag i gCom Dhíneol. Bhí suaimhneas anama orm nuair a d’éist mé leis na fuaimeanna as an bh-farraige ag réabadh ar an gceann tíre agus bhí mé ag ag cur na súl tríthi le hiontas faoi na dathanna san uisce. Ní raibh aon údar gearáin agam faoin fuarlach báistí a bhí ann! Tá tírdhreach na hÉireann go hálainn agus féictear dom go bhfuil Corca Dhiubhne ar an tseoid is luachm-haire dá bhfuil ag Éirinn.

Tá bunadh na háite ag déanamh obair na gcapall chun an teanga agus an cultúr Éireannach a chur chun cinn. Bhí sé seo soiléir dom nuair a bhí mé i gCeann Trá, áit a bhfuil clú agus cáil ar ‘Rí an Pharóiste’, Páidí Ó Sé. Gaiscíoch Gaeilge, laoch peile agus Ciarraíoch bródúil ab ea é Páidí agus bhí an tigh tábhairne a htóg sé plódaithe le daoine ag an deireadh seachtaine agus na cluichí Gaelacha ar an teilifís. Bhí an deoch ag rith agus bhí atmaisféar meidhreach ann. Tá na ballaí dubh le grianghrafanna de dhaoine sa pholaitíocht, sa spórt, daoine cáiliúla agus colúin nuachtán. Tá comhartha mhór ann freisin – ‘Ní peil go Ciarraí, Ní deoch go Guinness’. Tá muintir na háite an-phaiseanta faoi fhoireann chaide Chiarraí agus fuair mé cúpla dreach mearbhallacha as na daoine seo nuair a d’imir mé iománaíocht (‘Báire’ i gCorca Dhiubh-ne) ar an dtrá! Bhí mé ar mo sháimhín só nuair a bhí mé ag bualadh, ag pocadh agus ag lascadh an tsliotair cois farraige le mo comhleacaithe. Chonaic mé cúpla capall agus capaillín ag rasaíocht cois farraige agus bhí regatta ar siúl ar an gcéad Domhnach a bhí mé ann.

Táim cinnte go bhfuil an Ghaeilge beo ‘s sláintiúil i nGaeltacht Corca Dhuibhne agus sílim go mbeidh mé ar ais chun mo chuid Gaeilge a úsáid – sa Droichead Beag gan dabht! Más féidir, ba mhaith liom filleadh ar chúrsa samhraidh arís i bPobalscoil Chorca Dhiubhne le Cait-ríona ‘s an fhoireann a chuir sí le chéile. Míle buíochas le gach duine a bhí ann agus le cúnamh Dé, measaim go mbhualfidh mé suas le gach duine a d’fhreastail ar an gcúrsa arís. Mar a deireann an seanfocal, “Labhraimís Gaeilge le chéile”.

Ó Mhárthain.

Breandán Mac Gearailt

Faoileáin Dhána. Cé a déarfadh é go n-eireódh an faoileán crosta agus mallaithe. Tá scéalta fútha thall is abhus sa tír seo, ach thall i Sasana chomh maith Taispéaineadh faoileán gortach ag greamú ceapaire as láimh mná a bhí buailte fuithi ag féachaint amach ar an bhfarraige. Tá siad ag tabhairt fé shicíní etc. Ná raibh an mháchail sin riamh ortha, ach ‘sé an scéal is déanaí ná go mbionn ocras ar na faoileáin mar ná fuil dóthain éisc sa bhfarraige mar bhíodh. Tá siad ag druidim isteach fén dtír anois a deirtear agus is ar thóir bídh atá siad á dhéan-amh san. Comh fada agus is eol dom níl cead iad a lámhach ná a mharú in aon tslí. ‘Sí an chuimhne atá agam óm óige, ná nuair a chifeá na faoileáin amuigh ar an mbán beagán milte ón bhfarraige, bí dearfa go mbeadh báisteach chughat agus dá líonmhaire iad sea is measa a bhíonn an aimsir.

Bheadh amhras orm fés na scéalta ach nuair a chíonn daoine ‘lena dha súíl féin’ iad seo ag tarlú is deacair gan géilleadh dhóibh. Tá súil agam ná héireóidh ortha agus go gcaithfear a bheith ag faire amach doibh mar a bheithfeá don madra rua a mharaíonn na huain. Gan dabht mharódh an madra rua, cearca, lachain agus géanna. Dá mbeadh an chearc ag breith amuigh d’ardódh an faoileán leis na huibhe agus an madra rua an chearc. Ritheann sé liom, bhídis riamh ag faire amach do uibhe cearc a chodail amuigh. Nuair a bheadh an feirmeoir ag treabhadh bheadh na scuainí faoileán ina dhiaidh agus iad ag slogadh péisteanna. Ach ná bíonn siad ann leis nuair a bhíonn tarracóirí na dtrí chéachta ag treab-hadh, nó báid an Daingin ag teacht le cé. N’fheadar cad deirim leis mar scéal ach gur dócha go bhfuil scéal mór déanta do scéal gan móran do dheáramh leis. Agus na pictiúirí a bhí ar an dteilifís? San idirlinn bead ag gliúcaíol féachaint an bhfuil na faoileáin seo againn eirithe dána mallaithe.

Iománaíócht agus Caid Mura a bhfuil aon ghaisce mór déanta ag imreoirí caide na Gaillimhe i mbliana tá ag na hiománaithe. Beidh mionúir agus sinsir na Gail-limhe i gCraobh sinsir na hiomána ar an gcéad Dhomhnach do Mheám Fhómhair. Ní raibh dubh t-iongan idir iad agus Tiobraid Árainn ar an nDomhnach seo caite; poinnte beag suarach a bhí eatortha ach pointe an- thabhachtach. Cinnte bhí an Ghaillimh i bhfad ró-mhaith dos na Tiobradaigh ach bhí lán tosach Thio-raid Árainn an Callanach go diail ar fad- fuair an trí bhaide agus seacht no hocht do phointí. An tuairim a bh agamsa roimh an gcluiche gur iad na Tiobradaigh an taon fhoireann a bhuafadh ar Chill Chainnigh mar go mbeidís láidir garbh a ndóthain.

San am céanna bhí sé im aigne, go bhfuil ard foireann ag an nGaillimh ach ní i gcónaí a bhíonn siad ar cosa anairde. Go deimhin tá an- iománaithe acu agus is mó duine a bhí ag súil go mbeadh an t-adh leo. Bíonn an an gnáth dhuine i gcónaí ag tacú leo siúd ná éiríonn leo ach go hannamh- tuigeann aon Chiarraioch é sin. Agus tuigfir an Domhnach seo é mar go mbeidh gach contae in Éirinn ag súil go mbainfidh Tír Eoghain an bonn ó Chiarraí. Se-ans ná beadh gach contae mar tá cúpla contae go bhfuil sean- chúiseanna acu ar Thír Eoghain agus go ndéarfadh siad dá mbuathfaí ortha., ‘Tuilleadh an daibhail’ chucha.

Tá Craobh na hÉireann buaite ag imreoirí sói-sir Chiarraí agus is beag glóir ná duain le clos fé. Nách diail an sean- bhlas é. Táimíd ag súil go mbeidh mionúir Chiarraí sa craobh leis na sinsir ar an tríú Domhnach do Mhean Fhómhair, ach caithfidh Ciarraí Tír Eoghain a threascairt rud a mheasaim a dhéanfaid. N’fheadar fén stair, ach má bhíonn Ciarraí leath chomh maith is tá siad le deanaí beidh an lá leo.

Bhíos ag caint le seanfhundúir agus eolaí ar chúrsaí caide a dúirt gur iad Maigh Eo agus Ciill Chainnigh a bhuafadh. Ní mhór linn do Mhaigh Eó é ach tá an iomarca ceanna-saíocht ag ‘na Cait’ agus ní braithfeadh siad uatha cúpla ‘Corn Mhic Cárthaigh’.

Tá foireann sinsir ban Chiarraí i gcraobh leath cheannais na caide tréis dóibh an lá a bhreith leo in aghaidh Mhaigh Eó. Bhí Louis Ní Mhuircheartaigh go diiail. Fuair

Louis an- bháide agua trí phoinnt. Is le Cor-caigh a bheidh siad sa chluiche leath chean-nais. Go n-éirí ann t-ádh leo.

An Lab. Bhíos ag ócaid an- thaithneamhach sa Lab, sa Daingean le déanaí. Siad Mícheál ó Sé, ‘An Bhéil Bhinn’ agus Simon ‘Na nDán’ ó Faoláin a bhí ag léamh sleachta do shaothar ón mBlas-caod mar na leabhair ‘Fiche Bliain ag Fas’ agus ‘An tOileánach. Bhí Feargas mac Amhloibh ‘an cheoil’ ann agus is maith é. B’álainn a chas sé an fonn a théann leis an amhrán ‘Ceataí’. Bhí Áine Moynihan, a riarann an Lab, ag aithris stráice chomh maith, agus is maith chuige í.

Citizens Information - Know your Rights A Free and Confidential ServiceEuropean Health Insurance CardQuestion I lost my job last year and I am now thinking of starting a small business. Are there any supports to help me?

Answer Local Enterprise Offices provide supports to local businesses that are starting up or in development. You can find information about their training programmes and start your own business courses on localenter-prise.ie. Also, Enterprise Officers in local de-velopment companies can offer advice and information on starting your own business.

If you have been getting a jobseeker’s pay-ment for 12 months or more, you may be eligible for the Back to Work Enterprise Al-lowance. This allows you to keep a percent-age of your payment for two years. If you are starting a business, you also may get extra supports, such as grants for training, market research, business plans and access to loans to buy equipment.

If you have been unemployed for at least 12 months and you set up a qualifying business, you may be eligible for Start Your Own Business Relief. It provides exemption from income tax on the profits from your business up to a maximum of €40,000 a

year for a period of two years.

Often, someone starting a small business does so as a sole trader rather than setting up a partnership or a company. However, as a sole trader, if your business fails, your personal assets could be used to pay your creditors. Your main legal obligation is that you must register as a self-employed person with Revenue. As a self-employed individual you pay tax under the self-assess-

ment system.

You may carry on your business using your own name. If you wish to use a business name you must register it. The Companies Registration Office has information about business names and different business structures on its website, cro.ie.

Further information is available from your local tax office and your Local Enterprise Office.

The Broken Harp le

Tomás Mac Síomóin cursíos ag Seaghan Mac an tSionnaigh

‘Is scríbhneoir dúshlánach é Tomás Mac Síomóin. Tá a léargas ar shaol na hÉireann ar fáil ina chuid gearrscé-alta, úrscéalta, filíocht agus aistí le dhá scór bliain.... ‘Tugann a leabhar nua The Broken Harp Identity and Language in Modern Ireland sásamh ar leith dó, mar gur forbairt shuntasach é ar argóintí a d’fhoilsigh Coiscéim i bpaimfléid éagsúla Gaeilge. Tá talamh nua treafa aige anseo leis an Ghaeilge, Éireanna-chas, stair an chine agus géineolaíocht a shnaidhmeadh ina chéile agus tugann sé míniú conspóideach ann ar cheist thréigint na Gaeilge.... Ina insint ar an scéal anseo, is í oidhreacht an chóilíneachais an char-raig ar ar bhris gach iarracht go dtí seo le teanga na nGael a shlánú. Déanann sé scagadh ar fhianaise a tháinig chun solais le blianta beaga anuas go bhfágann an bhrúidiúlacht, a théann i bpáirt le cóilíneachas, a lorg ar an dúchas bitheolaíoch.... Deir sé go bhfágann an t-athrú seo tionchar diúltach ar chultúr agus iompar an phearsa chóilínithe agus ar a shliocht chomh maith: ‘B’as staidéar ar shliocht na gcimí i gcampaí géibhinn na Naitsíoch sa Dara Cogadh Domhanda a tháinig an t-eolas seo i gcéaduair. Bunaithe ar fhianaise den chineál seo, is féidir a mhaíomh gur fáisceadh gnéithe d’Éireannachas an lae inniu - an col le Gaeilge san áireamh - as taithí an íochtaráin i bpobal cóilínithe. Tá saintréithe an Éireannachais chóilínithe seo - claontaí ólacháin, chun gruaime, foréigin, rátaí arda scitsifréine, srl, á léiriú ag na glúnta Éireannacha ó shin, in Éirinn agus thar sáile. Amhail is dá mbeadh riar nach beag dínn ag feidhmiú ar go leor bealaí de réir script a chum an cóilínitheoir Sasanach dúinn fadó.’’
