2Brockport high school student granted wish as Buffalo Bills water boy

Sixteen-year-old Anthony Calaci had a wish come true as he signed a one-day contract to serve as water boy for the Buffalo Bills. Calaci is an 11th-grader at Brockport High School and has leukemia. The Make a Wish Foundation granted Calaci his wish to serve as the Bills’ water boy on November 6.

Calaci started the day by signing an official employ-ment agreement. He toured the Buffalo Bills locker room and received his own locker, full of team swag. He then worked as a water boy at the Bills’ practice, where he joked with full back Jerome Felton, “when I play full back, I’m going to take your spot!”

Calaci led the team in a cheer, then joined them for lunch at the Bills’ cafeteria, where a special cake awaited him. “There’s nothing I can forget; I’m going to remember it all,” said Calaci. “It’s been the best day.” He wrapped up the day with a $1,000 shopping spree in the Bills Store.

“I’ve never seen him smile as much before. He got to be a water boy for the complete day; it just made his day,” said Anthony’s father John Calaci. “It was awesome. Just to see the look on his face was price-less.”

Calaci and his family were also treated to box seats and a field experience at the game against Miami on November 8.

Make a point to go shopping this Small Business Saturday

(StatePoint) For many holiday shoppers, Black Friday marks the official kickoff to the gift-buying season. But the following day, November 28, is Small Business Sat-urday, and can be a more satisfying way to shop for gifts for loved ones.

At a time of year where big box retailers offer deep discounts, this annual opportu-nity to show local businesses your support is also a great way to score unique items while benefitting the local economy.

Here are some retail trends and other things to consider as you shop at your favorite small businesses.

The local economyBy supporting small businesses, you are supporting local job creation. In fact, small firms accounted for over three-fifths of the new jobs created between 1993 and mid-2013, according to government statistics. With the National Federation of Inde-pendent Business (NFIB) and American Express reporting that $14.3 billion was spent with independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday in 2014, spending your holiday shopping budget locally strengthens Main Street and can help your community’s economy thrive.

New technologiesA common stereotype of mom and pop stores are that they are antiquated and overpriced, but many small businesses are adopting new technologies to streamline their operations; which can be an important consideration for shoppers in a hurry or on a budget.

Exclusive itemsFrom the gift shop with handmade crafts made by neighborhood artisans to the bookshop selling the works of local au-thors, shopping at small businesses means encountering items on sale that you won’t find elsewhere.

If you are shopping for someone who seemingly has everything, going local can help you get inspired.

Consider doing your holiday shopping a bit differently this year, by making a point of supporting small, local businesses on Small Business Saturday and beyond.

Look in the

Home for the Holidays special section delivered with this

paper for more opportunities to Shop Small Businesses.
