Letter of thanks As Sister Raven Sue Sklair takes on a new direction in her career and continues to share her medical wisdom in our community, I felt like she needed some long overdue recognition. Raven, as she is affectionately known by many has carried the responsibility of delivering babies at home for the last seven years. Very few may realize the immense challenge of this role and I ‘m sure that I thank her along with many parents, for her willingness to have provided this service within her admirable professional capacity and high safety records. I was wrong and I will gladly pay for my action but I sincerely hope that our dedicated traffic officer supervises the parking bays for the disabled residents. Almost without fail, when I shop at a busy shopping mall in the middle of town I see physically able motorists park in those bays...ticket, ticket PLEASE! Pedestrian crossings lack the correct signage to warn motorists about the crossing, it is therefore imperative that markings on the road should be as bright as possible. Cars should not be allowed to park at the entrance of the crossing. Bitou Business Buzz Hopefully...the well-known adage 'new brooms sweep clean' will apply to the new Council. Road markings in our town should urgently be repainted, and in some instances added, such as large arrows indicating one way traffic. On several occasions I have seen motorists in Gibb street , especially coming out of the Bayview hotel's parking facility, turn right to go to the Main street which is against the one way traffic. We are a tourism destination and in all fairness we need to help our guests avoid possible danger while driving. 'Stop street' markings should be looked at on a regular basis including the yield signs. It is up to traffic authorities to inform the appropriate Municipal department about the upgrading of the traffic signs. Which brings me to another 'brooms' situation. During the thirty one years that I have lived in Plett, I have never seen a traffic official issue a ticket, except the other day, a motorist, ME, was parked in a badly marked loading zone. When I returned a ticket was issued!

Help us find Snares Greetings all readers and nature lovers! I trust you have all been keeping well, and have been doing your bit to enjoy and conserve nature in your own special way. On a serious note, Leopards will not be discussed today, however with regards to the current topic, they can be affected. You may have already heard the story about a group of hikers who stumbled upon some poachers who were in the act of skinning a Bushpig that had been caught in a snare. I do not know too much about the situation and what happened to the poachers and certain legalities, but what I do know is, that there is going to be an intensive snare swoop, around that area and other hotspots that have been pointed out by the public. I once again encourage you dear readers to provide any information on where you have experienced snare traps, or seen any recent “poaching” activity near you. I have started this snare project along with the assistance of Ingwe Forest Adventures, the Southern Crags Conservancy and the Orca Foundation. I have a great team to help explore and find snares and we welcome any other volunteers who would like to join us. Holiday Soccer Fun It was so fabulous to see 2 under 13 teams of enthusiastic young soccer players on Monday when I popped in at the stadium in KwaNo. Shooting Stars under coach Athule Mayedwa in their bright yellow shirts were up against Coach Nkohna Thafeni’s Young Pirates team in Black and white. Conservation Corner Like human fingerprints, the Dorsal fins on dolphins have unique markings that allow scien-tists to identify individuals within a pod. This can be done through the method ‘Fin profiling’. In order to do this, photographs are taken of the dorsal fins of as many dolphins as possible in one trip. These are then download onto a computer, and then each fin is cropped out of that photo. The fins are then categorized into 5 main groups, Very distinctive fin such as half of it missing, Very distinctive marking, like distinct coloration, Fin tip where the very top of the fin is indented or nicked, Notches, often in the shape of Vs or Us along the back of the fin and finally Leading edge, where markings occur on the front side of the fin. These are then put into a database where individuals and re-sightings are logged. This can be used to determine population size, group structure, habitat use, migration periods and various other aspects to the life of a dolphin. In the UK, the minimum labour rate is approximately 5 pounds per hour, but it would appear as though one sector of their population is prepared to work for as little as 2 pounds per hour as they are not registered to be employed in the U.K. In South Africa, our minimum labour rate is approximately R 8 per hour but it would be interesting to see how many unemployed people would be prepared to have employment at say R4 per hour. Surely if a person is prepared to work for this low wage, he should have the right to do so and at least be able to put bread on the table rather than have to steal or beg for food. Historic Signing of Ex-pression of Common Purpose The Western Cape Education De-partment and The Bitou 10 Education and Development Foundation made history on 22nd June when they signed an Expression of Common Purpose Agreement(ECP) at a func-tion graciously hosted by the annexe of the Plettenberg Hotel.. In line with their undertaking to facilitate, support and develop initia-tives that promote the holistic, inte-grated education journey of every Bitou child and learner B10F aims to implement programmes which pro-vide opportunities for Bitou learners to fulfil their potential and impact on the wider community – the BIEDP is one such programme. The BIEDP results from the inte-gration of findings from all local edu-cation sectors – Early Childhood Development, the Foundation and Intermediate Phases, Further Educa-tion and Training, and Adult Educa-tion and Training. The Plan not only includes recommendations for each of these sectors but also identifies the core factors imperative to its success as: The integration of all local educa-tional activities and services Addressing barriers to access of quality education by all learners in-cluding those with special needs Establishing a learner support sys-tem at every learning site Linking education to the world of work and opportunity In 2007 B10F facilitated the Mayor’s First Education Indaba which led to the development and drafting of the BIEDP, and theWCED was a key partner in this process. Both parties recognise the potential for significantly improving the quality of the education experience of Bitou learners where appropriate. The Western Cape Education de-partment have goals and implemen-tation strategies which need to be fulfilled. Both want what’s best for our children... Sea Rescue – National : Spring Tides and school vacations don't mix well. The New Moon on the 01st July, 2011, brings with it the Spring Tide and in the middle of school holidays the concern is raised that school learners on vacation angling from rocks, boating or bathing, along the coast are at great risk. Spring Tide occurs twice a month, every month of the year, everywhere in the world, at new moon and again at full moon, and affects the sea tides, causing a higher than normal high tide and a lower than normal low tide.

The NSRI are urging school learners, teachers and parents to be acutely aware of the "stronger than normal rip current Spring Tide phenomenon" and to exercise extreme caution during the Spring Tides when rip currents are at their strongest. SAFETY TIPS: Anglers fishing from rocks along the coastline should wear life-jackets and never turn their back to the sea. Anyone on a boat or paddle craft should wear their life-jackets at all times while their vessel or craft is underway. Always let a responsible person know your departure time, your exact route and your return time. Stick to your exact route and check in with the responsible person on your safe return. People living along the coast and people visiting the coast on vacation should find out what their nearest sea rescue emergency phone number is by visiting www.nsri.org.za or calling (021) 4344011 during office hours. Children should at all times have responsible adult supervision around water – inland waters, coastal waters, seas, swimming pools, lagoons, lakes, dams, rivers, reservoirs, canals and puddles. Plettenberg Bay Country club News in June Here we are mid way through this year already - only 6 months to summer holidays! - and there is not much doubt that it is mid winter as the sun drops behind the hill and the shadows contribute to a very nippy second half in our afternoon games. However this has not dampened the member’s spirits or enthusiasm and we have had good attendance and good bowling on most club days through June. Bitou Arts and Culture Society launch Anti-drug Campaign and Mural Exhibition Project for 2011 Rugby World Cup. Latest news on our Olympian Kayaker and Surf Ski paddler, Michele Eray...... On 18 June at Zonkwasdrift on the Berg river Michele earned the 2011 SA K1 River Woman Champion title when she won the 2 day 45km South African championship race. One week later on 26 June in Durban, Michele won the Dunlop Surf Ski World Cup when she paddled 26km in the sea from Durban Bay to Umdloti. The race had a world record of 395 paddlers in the race. Michele came an impressive 25th overall. Here is an extract from the race report on www.surfski.info ... While it is difficult to measure Eray’s perform-ance in terms of margins of victory in the women’s race, she finished twenty fifth overall in one of the most impressive performances by a female in an international event for many years. “When you get totally obliterated like Michéle (Eray) did to us today it’s easy to see why she’s the best female surfski paddler on the planet. She was just too good for us and I felt like I was going backwards trying to stay with her,” said second placed Nikki Mocké.

Cycling for Trees Kayden Kleinhans is cycling on a Charity Ride which encompasses 40 countries on 4 continents right around the world. We got the chance to meet this interesting and inspirational young man on Monday 27th June when he popped in to the Print Shop to give us a report for the What’s New in Plett. The cycling bug bit Kayden when he was doing the “South African student stint in London”, got tired of his security job and started delivering goods on a bicycle for a courier company. He spent 1 and a half years touring Australia on a bike, then on to China, covering a distance of 16000km. The last 8 months were spent on a trip which started in Manchester, England then crossed Europe, after which Kayden cycled solo unsupported through the Sahara, through the civil war torn Ivory Coast’s Cote de Voir. He was refused entry into Nigeria, the reason given that kidnapping for ransom was too high a risk, so he came back to South Africa. Undeterred Kayden started the other part of the planned African trip in Cape Town, has been through Lesotho, Swaziland, and Mocambique and was on the Garden Route leg of SA. Each key is labelled I then take them upstairs where they are methodically hung on a key holder with matching labels so that I can spot the missing key and rush off to find it and lock that door. Once I am in my bedroom suite, I lock all the doors in there - three to be exact and keep them with the other keys also locked in my bedroom. The two vicious hounds are on guard in the bedroom as well. My theory behind all this is, that if the burglar and his mates get into one room, they cannot get out of it and if they do they will not be able to move around much as all the other doors are locked. Hopefully by this time I have heard the commotion and have our security people dashing to save me. There is a problem with this, because should one feel like a little snack later it is a major mission to get to the pantry or the kitchen and also a handful of keys. You then have to go back on your tracks so as to lock up again. Very tiring. One trick I have learnt is that the drinks tray lives in our bathroom while he is away and all the drinks I might feel like including a bucket of ice. I suppose one could pack up a picnic basket beforehand with all kinds of little snacks, but that means a plate, knife and fork, butter, cocktail onions, mousse, biscuits, salt pepper . crisps, on second thoughts - out of the

Life in Plett BURGLARS Beloved has been in Joeys for a week so I have been left here all alone to fight the rain, broken appliances and possible burglars. I am such a poep even when he is here. After a little break-in a year ago I am worse than before. Remember I was a Jo'burger. I still have all those self protection skills in my mind. After the burglary I made him put up burglar bars and electric fencing. Sounds like jo'burg again. We are in an enclosed estate so it is still a mystery how a stranger got up onto our second floor window (the one that faces the other houses in the estate) and then help himself to all the carryable office stuff plus all the electric tools etc in the garage. International Drug Awareness Day in Plett Despite the very cold and windy weather, there was a vibrant gathering outside Cranzgots and Ali’s Cell Shop. (The event was organised to be held in front of Clicks at Mellvilles Corner, but on the day businesses in that Centre were not prepared to have their space shared for 2 hours to mark this important internationally recognised day, saying it was too noisy ) Grade 7 students from schools in the area, as well as the Masizame Best Centre, competed in a Poster and Poem competition. Our deputy mayor, Cllr Adam Rhyner provided the music equipment and welcomed everyone, there were inspirational talks by Yolanda from Social Development, Melanie from Famsa and Shaun from Plett Alcohol and Drug Centre, the co-ordinator of the day’s event. Our new mayor, Cllr Memory Booysen was the judge of the posters, a difficult task since they were all great, each was different, but told the same story. Don’t do Drugs! They will harm and kill you! Kranshoek Primary were the exuberant winners. A Big thank you to Cranzgots for the great coffee and delicious Pizzas made at such short notice for the children. Well done Shaun for a great event and the enthusiasm and dedication you put into managing the Plett Alcohol and Drug Centre, a vital service to our area.

Snippets for the Week Busy week as always. Spaying daily, feeding the starving daily, providing blankets and making all kinds of make do shelters for the freezing and wet dogs. Happy to say that I know of 3 dogs whose owners have provided them with kennels this past week. Thank you, one and all, who have contributed in any way, to help these poor dogs in need. We are also so grateful to Jackie Bass for organising all the cushions. We are desperate for any means of shelter for these animals. Should you have any unused kennels or wooden boxes, or even plastic crates, in any condition, please contact me and I will gladly collect. We are still removing unwanted and stray animals in Kwanokuthula. Hopefully this will be drawing to an end soon, as it's rather heartbreaking to do. We are still finding the odd puppies, but thankfully, much less than before. I homed a puppy a few months back, to someone whom I thought would take very good care of him. I have since learned that she has now given him to her maid who lives in Kwanokuthula and who already has four dogs and who has since left her employ. Please, if anyone knows of Ruth who has taken the pup, I would like him back, as I have a very good home for him to go to. Adopting out animals is really a very difficult task, so well done to Paws, for managing to find homes for a few of the homeless. Please diarise the 15th of July, 8h30 at the Magistrate Courts - Plettenberg Bay. The criminals who used their Pitbulls to gain financial reward, will again appear in court.
