4 What’s Up

Most international observers have been scath-ing over the elections, stating that Ukraine has taken a big step back in democratic terms since Yanukovych came to power, which is not a big surprise to anyone. They did say, however, that this time round the voting process itself seemed to be largely free of shenanigans, with only a handful of minor incidents noted, the most humourous of which being the use of pens con-taining disappearing ink in Odesa. That aside, international observers have been highly critical of the use of finances, control of the media, and the fact that main political op-

It’s a Steal for Party of RegionsAs we write this on Tuesday, the Central Elec-tion Committee has 87.85% of the votes counted and at this stage the Party of Regions has 31.76%, Batkivshchyna – 24.28%, Com-munists – 13.87%, UDAR – 13.48%, and Svo-boda – 9.62%. We’re a little surprised by these numbers, as on Monday the results were show-ing PoR with a much higher percentage, while these numbers actually lie within those of the exit polls. That, interestingly, would indicate a rather fair count of the votes.Indeed, if things remain the same, the alloca-tion of seats within the Verkhovna Rada would be PoR – 193, Batkivshchyna – 103, UDAR – 38, Svoboda – 33, Communists – 33. This doesn’t give PoR an outright majority, which would in-dicate that they’ve not been completely fraudu-lent. However, add their 193 seats to those of their traditional allies, the Communists, and you get a majority, albeit a slim one.

ponents still languish in prison, all of which have swung things heavily in favour of PoR.However, the most fraudulent aspect of this election is only going to become fully apparent after several weeks, as all those elected to rep-resent a specific area finally declare their af-filiation. The new election law, which came into effect in December last year, allows for half the seats to be allocated through party voting and the other half through votes for a constituency candidate. Constituency candidates did not have to declare a party affiliation, and in prac-tise many of those who are definitely PoR tried to muddy that fact as much as possible, even going so far as to use colours similar to opposi-tion parties.Basically, what we now have in Ukraine is an electoral system that is a complete joke and wide open to abuse of all sorts. This is, of course, exactly what Yanukovych and his henchmen wanted, and that’s what they’ve got.The final result? Yanukovych and the Party of Regions for the foreseeable future. The outlook for Ukraine? Bleak. Very bleak.

What Do Your Dreams Mean? The city is adding to its list of unique institutions, with the opening of the Museum of Dreams at the end of last month. Divided into four zones, the museum contains a bookshop, an exhibition hall – which will house revolving exhibitions, an office with experts in psychoanalysis, as well as a linguistic club. Currently, the exhibition hall contains pieces deal-ing with nightmares, inspiration for which was de-rived from works by Freud. In addition, if you’re re-ally intent on learning the meaning of your dreams, schedule a visit with the local psychoanalyst – an additional cost to the general admission fee. Or, should you want to combine dream analysis with a little English language practise – you’re in luck! The linguistic club offers you the chance to brush up on your skills while revealing your deepest, darkest dreams. We here at What’s On personally suffer from the recurrent nightmare that the magazine won’t make it to print on time, and as such, will be making a visit to Kyiv’s newest museum very soon! Stay tuned.

Maidan’s Main Event You may remember how last year’s Christmas tree was continually criticised for its abnor-mal cone shape, its artificial decor, and its downright unnaturalness. Hoping to curb the negativity this year, Kyiv City Administra-tion has hired Lumier from Illichivsk, who are promising an “almost real” creation.Picture this: a metal frame of triangle-shape sections made to imitate the sharp-pointed silhouette of a typical Christmas tree. Appar-ently, the frame will be installed easily and quickly, after which it will be dressed with more than 10 kilometres of artificial fir-nee-dles from Italy! The final touch – illumination. Lights will sparkle and shine like a beacon to the far-off cities of Ukraine, as national ornaments from each of the regions hang from the branches. Weighing in at nearly 30 tonnes and measur-ing11-storeys, that's a tree the country can be proud of!

Dnipropetrovsk is Dying Out!One of Ukraine’s biggest cities and industrial centres, Dnipropetrovsk, is also the world’s fastest shrinking city, concludes a recent report conducted by the UN. Issues such as the popu-lation’s attitude toward the environment, the development (or lack thereof) of infrastructure, society’s readiness and willingness to acknowl-edge social issues, etc, were all taken into ac-count, and found Dnipropetrovsk as the most globally-affected/disaffected municipality. With a population of 1,162,000 in 1990, the city dropped to just above one million in 2010, and home to approximately 996,000 people in 2012. The expectation is that by 2025, the population will shrink to a staggering 967,000, which will mean a total loss of more than 16% of inhabit-ants over the 35-year testing period!Migration and low birth rate are among the big-gest factors accounting for the rapid population decrease. Specifically, the UN found that birth rates were 1.3 times less than the mortality rate. Donetsk and Zaporizhya are also among the fastest-shrinking cities, globally. We could, of course, pundit on the pros and cons of this real-ity regarding certain cities. But perhaps we’ll let you come to your own conclusions on this one.

Paedophile HuntersA group of creative Ukrainian men are taking action against paedophilia in a rather unorthodox way. The group, which calls itself Occupy Paedophilia, uses a 15-year-old boy to entice older predators via flirtatious Internet chats. When the men try to set up a meeting with the teenager, he agrees. However, the second these creeps arrive at the appointed site, a group of grown men appear, and the romantic date only gets worse from there. The activists forcibly restrain the paedophile and goad him into giving a video interview, made all the more humiliating by the crown emblazoned with the word “paedophile” that they force him to wear. The vigilantes then put the video online so that everyone will be able to identify these men. It’s To Catch a Predator, Ukraine style!

Mixed ResultsThere are a number of testimonies concerning the elections over the weekend as “democratic”, reports Interfax Ukraine, with one observer from the European Centre for Geopolitical Analysis, Daniel van der Stoep, even going so far as to say, “They were fair, and organised even better than in some Western countries.” Shockingly, the Eu-ropean Parliamentarian went on to remark that Ukrainians should be very proud of themselves and such elections, as it demonstrates just how far the country has come. MEP Vojtech Mynar, of the Czech Republic, was also very complimentary, remarking on the lack of mistakes made at the most recent elections. And MEP Nick Griffin of the UK, couldn't lay it on thick-ly enough, commenting, "Their system was even more transparent and fair than the British one." Things aren’t always as they seem, however, and when one scratches the surface of something seemingly too good to be true, it usually is. There-fore, let us take a look at these MEPs a little closer.Daniel van der Stoep is a Dutch politician who resigned as an MEP after causing a car acci-dent for drunk driving. He has since been pro-hibited from rejoining his party and now sits as an independent. Nick Griffin, the same Nick Griffin who is chair-man of the British National Party, is another no-no when you’re looking for a fair and reasonable assessment of the Ukrainian election. Not only has he been convicted for inciting racial hatred, he had, at one time, tried to deny the Holocaust even occured. Then there’s Vojtech Mynar, who is a bit of a ques-tion mark. He’s recently taken over a post in the Czech Social Democrat party. But he’s so obscure, there’s hardly any information about him found online at all. If that weren’t enough, the European Centre for Geopolitical Analysis doesn’t even have a website – need we go on...?

Shevchenko Misses By A MileSheva might have been the country’s saving grace in the first round of EURO 2012 earlier this year, however, he’s missed and by long shot in the current elections; the results of which have led the country’s former number one striker to rethink his most recent political career move. Retiring from football after the summer’s big international tournament, Andriy Shevchen-ko opted to enter politics, specifically Nata-lia Korolevska’s party, Ukraine Forward! The move into the political sphere itself was an interesting one, especially since he had made statements just a couple of months earlier about hoping to coach football after his play-ing career. But the party he opted to support is also interesting, particularly because one of Ukraine’s biggest football stars to date was seen publicly endorsing current president, Viktor Yanukovych, during the presidential election back in 2004. Unfortunately, his status as former footballer did not gain him any points in his newly cho-sen career, as two separate exit polls show the party collecting just 1.6% of the ballot. The feeble finish puts Sheva and Korolevaska back in sixth place, and well outside the 5% minimum that would allow the party to qualify for automatic representation. While the country may be chanting Ukraine Forward!, they sure aren’t voting that way, and as such Shevchenko has opted to hang up his political boots after just three short months. Reporters caught up with him earlier this week at Boryspil Airport just before he was about to fly to London, where he said he had “seen enough” and was now disillusioned with Ukrainian politics. Shevchenko wouldn’t reveal what his next move might be. However, if rumours are to be believed, the ex-captain of the national team may be interested in starting a career in show business. He has, after all, been receiving singing lessons from Ukrainian popstar Vi-taliy Kozlovskiy and dance lessons from show-man Dima Kolyadenko.

This Week in History

8 November 1867The National Opera of Ukraine opens its doors to visitors for its first opera, Askold’s Grave. The theatre quickly becomes one of the Russian Empire’s best, attracting world-famous com-posers such as Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff where they premiere many of their works.

5 November 1934Famous Ukrainian film-director Kira Mura-tova is born. In addition to winning numerous Russian and Ukrainian awards, in 1990, her film Asthenic Syndrome won a Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

5 November 1953

The Paton Bridge over the Dnipro River is unveiled. At 1,543 metres long, this bridge is unique in that it is the world’s first all-weld-ed bridge. Ukrainian engineer Yevhen Paton played a huge role in its creation.

7 November 1968Oleh Tyahnybok, leader of the Svoboda party, is born. Recent results show that this will be the first time his party, which was officially registered in 1995, makes it into the Verk-hovna Rada. He brings with him a nationalist radical ideology.

2 November 2000The body, believed to belong to journalist Georgiy Gongadze, is found in the Tarashcha Forest. This Ukrainska Pravda journalist went missing on 16 September of the same year. Speculations that his murder was ordered by former President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, abound.

Serenaded by Mozart and BrahmsOffertorium Baroque Ensemble and Collegium Kyiv Winds, Master Class House of Culture and Education (Lavrska 16a)2 November at 20.00The Master Class House of Culture and Education continues to educate Kyiv classical music lovers with another concert this November. The evening will include a collection of ser-enades – Mozart’s festive serenade known as the Posthorn and the Second Serenade for small orchestra by Johannes Brahms Op.16. Both composers were young men when they wrote these works – Mozart itching to get away from his ty-rannical employer, the Archbishop in Salzburg, and Brahms still “the young eagle” as Schumann called him. Two works in the same tradition – night-music at once entertaining and stirring.Tickets are 50hrv. For more information call 594-1063.

Bossa Nova Brings ItBrazil Bossa Nova Quartet (Brazil, bossa nova)Tchaikovsky National Musical Academy (Arkitekta Horodetskoho 1/3)25 November at 19.00 Bossa Nova is a style of music, which unites the melodies of Bra-zilian samba with the natural improvisation of North American Jazz. It’s a genre so inspiring, the Brazil Bossa Nova Quartet was formed in its honour. This par-ticular foursome comprise the powerful and authentic Maucha Adnet on vocals, piano master He-lio Alves, Grammy-award nominee Duduka da Fonseca on drums and percussion, and our very own Arc Ovrutski on bass guitar. In fact, it’s thanks to the Ukrainian composer and bassist that the quartet will be here in Kyiv – don’t miss it!Tickets are 100 – 300hrv. For more information 067-430-7306.

Bill Brandt – Nothing More To Say Exhibition of photographs by Bill Brandt (UK), Brucie Collections Gallery (Artema 55b)From 15 NovemberBorn in Germany, Bill Brandt spent most of his life in the UK, becoming one of their most sig-nificant photographers of the 20th century. Captivating Brit-ish hearts with his creative eye for geographical panoramas, his penchant for nudes had the op-posite effect, and instead often shocked the conservative British society. Candid and antipathetic, his works make you forget you are looking at a photograph, cap-turing the real beauty of the mo-ment. This is a real treat for Kyiv audiences – don’t miss it. For more information call 353-1234.

Swedish Rock and Rollers Immanu El (Sweden, post-rock), Underground Music Hall (Moskovskiy 13b)24 November at 20.00 Sixteen-year-old twins Per and Claes Strangberg started Immanu El in Jonkoping, southern Sweden, in 2004. They were soon joined by Michael Persson, Emil Karlsson, David Lillberg and Jonatan Josefs-son, and the rest was history. Since then, the band has produced three studio albums and an EP, and amassed a devout international following among post-rock fans. With its first album, They’ll Come, They Come, the band cemented its status as critic favourite, garnering positive reviews worldwide. Fresh from a US tour, the band is launch-ing a tour of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia to promote their latest al-bum, In Passage, which has also been extremely well-received. Rock fans won’t want to miss this show! Tickets are from 100 – 120hrv. For more information call 277-3540.

Come 12 November, the gallery will be fea-turing works by German photogra-pher Astrid Kirchherr, well known for her association with the Fab Four. Chasing them around Ham-burg, Kirchherr and her camera caught many interesting moments in the metamorphosis of the band. Does literally every girl in Ukraine have a picture of her-self throwing autumn leaves in the air in a park?

Mid-NovemberLet’s relax and enjoy the break before the crazy holiday season starts. No need to worry about Christmas shopping or travel plans just yet...

Pantyusha Immortalised in a bronze statue at Golden Gate, the Pantagruel cat is a perennial tourist favou-rite. People pet it, pose for pic-tures with it, throw money at it, and even kiss it for good luck. Germs, ahoy!

Election Hangover The polls are closed and the numbers are in. Now that no one is offering us handles of vodka in exchange for our vote, we’ll have to find something else to focus our energy on...

Daylight Savings Goodbye, sunshine. See you next spring.

Serebro Only at Serebro would a dingle berry in terrible shoes and a slicked-back ponytail call the shots. Given the short-life span of clubs in Kyiv, we’re sure Sere-bro’s delusions of grandeur will fade fast.

So the elections are over and democracy has taken a beating once again. Of course, we expected nothing different here this time

round – everyone knew the Party of Regions would end up with the majority of seats regardless of the vote – but the whole debacle serves to highlight once again what a deeply flawed form of govern-ment it is.Around seven years ago we had a fraudulent vote and a revolution quickly followed. But that revolu-tion was largely the result of one person’s charis-ma, ego and hunger for power. Her charisma gave her authority, but her ego and hunger for power were her downfall as the people quickly realised she was not for them but for herself. This time round there will be no revolution as there is no one with enough charisma to rouse the peo-ple, and no one with the ego and hunger for power to even bother trying. And this is the problem. The global problem. In order for a politician to succeed, he or she must have charisma, ego and a hunger for power. As charisma is often now associated with sociopathy (yes, the ‘charming’ person may not be the nice person he or she appears to be), none of those are particularly benevolent charac-teristics, and while the leader of a country needs to have a strong personality, surely they also have to have a modicum of benevolence. At least, that’s what most of us hope for. Now, Yanukovych doesn’t appear to have much charisma, but apparently when he enters a room he has a presence that cows most. His hunger for power resembles that of Shakespeare’s MacBeth

or Richard III, and he’s done a masterful job of reaching the top and, so far, remaining there. He has control, and there’s no one else around with the charisma, ego and hunger for power needed to pose any sort of threat to him. But it is also widely reported that, just like Mac-Beth, Richard III and any modern world leader who gained control by nefarious tactics, he is suffering from serious paranoia. As he well should be.It’s also widely reported that he’s wracked with guilt, and as a deeply religious man he spends more than the average amount of time praying and taking pilgrimages, albeit in a presidential style. He is, like MacBeth and King Ricky, a king that’s taken power by force. Not physical force, but politi-cal force. And he and the people suffer for it. And because of the means by which he came to power he can never step down. If that were to happen the ills he visited on others would, of course, be visited upon him.He can only be usurped, and if he were usurped it would have to be by someone with huge charisma, ego and hunger for power; someone very unlikely to be any better. And when you look at democratic political systems around the world, including the current presidential race in the US, it’s really not that much different.Democracy is shouted from the hilltops as if it is the be all and end all; as if it is a benevolent and decent political system, but really it is no different from that of MacBeth and Richard III.

Neil Campbell

Dear Larry,I came to Ukraine earlier this week to observe the elections. I had never been to the country before and found it to be wonderfully charming. But, I’m not sure I can say the same about the voting procedure. I signed a waiver promising I wouldn’t say anything, but my conscience is getting the better of me – I was paid to look the other way when they started counting votes! I don’t know what to do! Should I return the money? Step down from my position as head of the British National Party? Please help!Yours sincerely, Nick

Dear Nick, Take heart, old chap. You were only a small cog in an enormous, poop-covered tragedy of the com-mons. Everyone thinks their individual votes and actions don’t make a difference...And it all adds up to a farce of an election and no one being fully to blame. Politicians only do what they can get away with, after all, and many myopic voters sold their votes or didn’t even bother voting in the first place. And let’s not even get into the creative “vote counting” that followed. So, worry not. Take that dirty money and buy yourself something nice in England. Perhaps, half a piece of gum or a grimace from a homeless person? Love, Larry

T rattoria Don Tuchini’s warm, glow-ing windows draw us in like moths to a flame. We rush inside, happy to escape the cold rain and dull au-

tumn weather. Little do we know, we’re in for a truly authentic Italian dining experience.

Buon giorno, Don Tuchini The warm and bright restaurant makes us quickly forget the dreary autumn weather out-side. The decor creates the cosy atmosphere of an Italian home in the country with simple, rus-tic furniture. Framed paintings and vases help create a homey atmosphere, and we feel relaxed and comfortable right away. There are two halls in the restaurant and we are surprised to learn that both are non-smoking. The restaurant

markets itself as a wholesome family establish-ment, and passing the kiddy play area on our way to our table I see this to be true. I notice an old piano in the corner and think to myself that it adds a nice touch to the room – until a pianist quickly emerges and begins playing a set for patrons. I jokingly try to con-vince my friend that I’ve commissioned the pianist especially for her, and she jokingly re-torts that she prefers the violin, anyway.

A True Italian Restaurant Our server arrives just in time to diffuse the awkward moment, carrying two menus and two glasses of Italian Pinot Grigio we ordered on the way in. Opening the menu, I think this might just be the authentic Italian restaurant we’d been

hoping for. You see, it is very common in Kyiv for so-called Italian restaurants to haphazardly combine various cuisines in one menu, serving pizza alongside sushi, for example. It brings to mind the popular adage “jack of all trades, mas-ter of none”. Fortunately, Trattoria Don Tuchini sticks to perfecting one trade: Italian food. You won’t find anything but delicious Ital-ian trademarks like Caprese, Ravioli, Pasta, Lasagne and Risotto with various fillings, as well as a range of pizzas. What truly convinced us we were in a real Italian restaurant was their homemade, fragrant focaccia bread with herbs and jamon served with a special Italian sauce. Jamon is a ham similar to prosciutto, but has a slightly different taste. I’ve never tasted anything like this fresh focaccia dish before – and this is just the beginning.

It was one of those rainy nights when people prefer to stay home. Instead, I am out on Obolonska Naberezhna with an old friend, looking for a nice place to hunker down for dinner. My charming companion has just come back from a trip to Italy, where she fell in love with Italian food, pesto in particular. I’d suggested that we give Italian cuisine in Kyiv a go, which is how we find ourselves at the door of Trattoria Don Tuchini.

Da Mangiare!
