The jury said:In this trilogy, dedicated to the funerals of the three anarchists who made attemptsagainst the life of Umberto I, the composerdeals with the theme of political protest in a sonorous and theatrical dimension that hasa powerful impact on listeners. In it there co-exist violence and carnival-like festivity, grotesque and dramatic atmospheres, and asolemn and entrancing choral writing to-gether with gestural and noisy components of an iconoclastic turn. BAM, Brooklyn Academy of Music, America's Oldest Performing Arts Center, is about to present (June

19th22nd, 2014 ), at BAM Fisher, the world premiere of Eternal NOW the latest work of Korean

choreographer Young Soon Kim and the company WHITE WAVE DANCE.

  • 2

Young Soon Kim is one of the most renowned

choreographers Korea has ever produced. Born

in Kwang Ju, Korea, Kim came to the United

States in 1977 at the invitation of the Martha

    Graham School.

Kim danced with Jennifer Muller /The Works

(19801984), Pearl Lang and Joyce Trisler

Companies, among others. Kim also studied

with Louis Falco, Lynn Simonson, Zvi Gotheiner,

Lar Lubavitch, Twyla Tharp and Martha Myers.

She formed WHITE WAVE in 1988.

Presenting audiences with visually provocative, intimate, and

    undeniably beautiful movement,

Eternal NOW reveals the secret longings of utterly human stories. A

work of vision and movement language that reaches into the

imagination, passion, and spirit, each piece perpetually affirms the now,

in space and time, while exploring the

    turbulence of human emotions.

What we are feeling at the very moment of

now is unknown territory. We as human

beings are constantly struck by the

turbulence of human emotion, which mostly

comes from the past or the future. This piece

is about facing NOW with a sense of hope

and possibility, Young Soon Kim has said

    about her work.

Eternal NOW is also reuniting Young Soon

    Kims fluid and intertwining dramatic

    movement with longtime collaborator, Italian

    composer Marco Cappelli, who will

perform an original score live, as dancers

interact with scenes of lusciously composed

images and edited footage by video artist,

Kate Freer, playing on wide screen monitors.

I will be in a corner on stage, sitting in an

area that looks like the cockpit of an airplane,

surrounded by little lights, cables and instruments and I will play, reading what the dancers do,

Marco Cappelli told us. The collaboration between the composer and Kim started back in 2009. I often travel to

Korea for work and I have met many musicians and composers. One of them, Kyoung Kim, introduced me to

Young Soon Kim, because she was based, as I am, in New York City. It was easier for us to collaborate than for

him who lived so far away. The show they are presenting now is the third of a series, and I composed music for

the previous two as well: So Long for Now and Here and Now.

    Italian composer Marco Cappelli

  • 3

We immediately realize that the common thread

between the shows is the word NOW. Yes,

Marco explained, and that is captured on stage by

the immediacy of the music and the space

given to improvisation. Believe me, there is a well

structured frame where we, and by we I mean me,

the dancers and the video artist, have room to

improvise. As far as I am concerned, I get to read

movement as if I were reading a sheet of music. I

am very interested in the relation between

composition and improvisation and Young Soon

Kim shares the same interest, that's why working

together is really ideal. At the very beginning

dancers are left to totally improvise, she wants to

see what they come up with. Then they are guided

by her and I let myself be guided to. It all comes together.

Marco Cappelli will be playing different

instruments: the guitar, keyboards and the

uboingee, an instrument that only two people

have in the world and M is one of them! The

Uboingee is a guitar with springs, Marco

explained, It looks like it belongs in a scifi movie

and it can be used both as a guitar and as

percussion, which is great for the dancers. It was

created by Mark Stewart, Paul Simon and Art

Garfunkel's guitarist and artistic director, who

happens to be also an inventor of instruments. I

will also play with some sound effects and make it

    all incredibly engaging.

Eternal NOW runs June 19 21, Thursday Saturday at 7:30 PM.

BAM Fisher is located at 321 Ashland Place, Brooklyn NY 11217. For information and

After the passion , then came calm as SSOOT ( / charcoal) burned Young Soon Kim, a Korean resident in the USA, performs a new show with two episodes Here NOW So Long and 'SSOOT()' Dance of madness and chaos that finishes with Gutgeori Jangdan (rhythmic rituals) My heart became SSOOT (burning sparks that sustain others) and I want to share its warmth with you.

    Reporter: [email protected]

All kinds of human behavior sometimes are reminiscent of insane stunts. Young Soon Kim said that the circus is out of my interest but it is artistic reinvention

-Information offered by SINAE Arts Management -

Contemporary dancer Young Soon Kim (59) who has been in New York for 30 years presented a new

performance, including 'Here Now So Long' and 'SSOOT()' on June 18th, 2012 at Seoul Arko Arts

Theater. She expressed her artworks as a heart black as pitch that are deeply trapped in the mind of a

Korean women, inside the edge of a city across.

  • The stage, where it is back and forth between

happenings of an occurrence and calculated

chaos, is visualized by using a camcorder and

expresses that New York is a place where the

division of human beings are forced.

David Tirosh, an Israeli multimedia and

performance artist, transmits live video to the

stage with a video camera next to the stage. The

image is transformed in real time to decorate the

screen like Nam June Parks video arts.

With the old media, newspapers, it is better to

give up falling in place. While the front of the

stage filled with newspapers, a projected

expansion of the newspaper mastheads is

displayed as a backdrop behind the dancers, and

the show started with the dancers tearing the

newspaper into pieces on the stage. The sound is

extremely expanded and a solo female dancer followed, frantically dancing. Finally, the media is held up

to ridicule, which only produces waste. The camera puts into the situation and creates chaos by playing

with time difference. Old media is thoroughly disaggregated as debris rattles around on the stage.

Humans are indifferent to such a situation. Humans are moved towards pleasure within each other. The

movements of dancers is vigorous as men and women behave greedily with each other, and are

persistently tracked by the camera while the front screen expands the scene, reproducing its appearance

    vividly.

The stage seemed like feast with intense techno-bit reversal thats had an opportunity to turn around. It

slowly started to sound like Gutgeori Jangdan (rhythmic rituals) that, in Korea, is very familiar. The

  • frenzy of the stage is slowly stilled with circumstances where one female dancer interchanges with two

male dancers, and interacting with the music of Gutgeori Jangdan. In one moment, dancers dance like

maniacs, and in the next moment they find their mate, and dance with the beat. They even cleanup the

    newspapers scattered around.

From Act II 'SSOOT() the show become more clearly similar to the Korean subject. A female dancer

walks around the stage while an enchanting oral sound plays, and the mixed sound of Daeguem (a large

bamboo transverse) and cello is heard. If the dancers get dressed in Korean traditional clothes, it would

be a modern edition of Ssitgim-gut, which is a shaman ritual for cleaning dead persons soul. Also heard

is a thick voice of a singer Daesue Han. Young Soon Kim said that the lyrics are very great in Daesue Hans

music, such the songs as 'Exile' and 'The sound of a drum()' which includes the Gutgeori Jangdan,

Korean Characteristics that she has kept strongly in her body.

Young Soon Kim performed a solo dance at the end of 'SSOOT()' for approximately 20 minutes. We can

say for certain that her performance is about her settlement into New York life over 30 years, which is

featured on the background with the image of a huge drain. She said, I would like to show my heart,

which has become black as pitch. She also mentioned, However, the SSOOT( / charcoal ) could also

make our body warm? That is why the gestures in her dance communicates lively warmth.

The performance will be featured on June 23rd and 24th at Gwangju Citizens Bitgoeul Cultural Center

and also on June 27th at Seongnam Arts Center.
