GENDER

Every Spanish noun has a gender: it is either masculine or feminine.

Generally nouns ending in -o are masculine and nouns ending in -a are feminine, but note these commonly used exceptions;

Telling the time

The verb ser is used to express the time of day. Use es when referring to "one o'clock" and use son when referring to all other hours.

Es la una It's one o'clock.Son las dos It's two o'clock.

The feminine article (la, las) is used before the hour because it refers to "la hora."

Minutes can be added to the hour using the word y (and).

Minutes can be subtracted from the hour using the word menos (less).

You can also use the words media (half) and cuarto (quarter).

To differentiate between a.m. and p.m. use the expressions de la mañana, de la tarde and de la noche.

When no specific time is mentioned, use the expressions por la mañana, por la tarde, por la noche.

USES OF SER AND ESTAR

There are two verbs ‘to be’ in Spanish: ser and estar.

SER is used to describe the permanent or semi-permanent characteristics of a person, place or thing:

REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

The reflexive pronouns are:

Reflexive pronouns are used with some verbs to show that the action is done by the subject to itself e.g. levantarse, to get (oneself) up.

Reflexive verbs end in –se in the INFINITIVE and include the reflexive pronouns above before the different parts of the verb. Llamarse is a reflexive verb that you already know. You should also learn these examples:
