I now own a cellphone.People who have been reading my stufffor a few years know how I love the simplelifestyle, ala St. Francis of Assisi. I’ve al-ways wanted an uncluttered and free life. Ididn’t want ringing, beeping, and vibratingthings disturbing my prayer time. And forthe sake of humility (or so I thought), I didn’twant the status symbol of a cell phonehanging from my belt. So except for mycomputer where I write my books, for manyyears I’ve avoided all sorts of personal gad-getry, equipment, and other luxuries: nocar, no cellular, no beeper, no wristwatch,no walkman, no girlfriend, etc.But slowly, I had to face harsh reality.My once friendly, gentle, and otherwisementally balanced staff of seventy-fivepeople—either working for SHEPHERD’SVOICE, or my Catholic community, orANAWIM (our work for the poor)—havebecome more and more violent these pastfew months.I hear screams like, “Where were you?Planet Mars?! We’ve been looking all overthe world for you these past three days!”Suicide attempts have been reported tome. A few have been acting weird everytime the moon is full. And I have received afew death threats from otherwise very lov-ing people, if I don’t get a cell phone.I’ve realized that there is one law aboveevery other law. Yup, even above my de-sire for simplicity. Or prayer. Or humility.It’s called the demand of love.If I love these people, I’m going to get acell phone. Whether it will interfere withmy simple lifestyle, my prayer life, and mygreat humility. (You see, I’m the mosthumble person in the world. I get awardsfor my profound humility. You know, I’m sohumble that blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...)What does love demand in your life?Disturbing your prayer time because yourlittle son wants you to carry him? Not at-tending your prayer meeting this weekbecause it’s Mom’s birthday? Saying “yes”to a leadership position even if you reallywant something low-key? Saying “no” toan abusive friend even if everything aboutyou wants to say yes?For me, it was the simple act of getting acell phone.I also got myself a girlfriend who later be-came my wife, but that’s another story.

THE NARROW GATE

In any human activity or endeavorsuccess always entails hard work andsacrifices. In the field of sports andathletics one has to undergo rigoroustraining and discipline is he wants torun home with the bacon or if hewants to get the better of his foes.There is no short –cut to victory. Al-ways one has to take pains for him tobe able to stand a ghost of a chance tobe crowned with laurels in the end.As the saying goes, “No pain no gain.”

A long time ago an American runnertook part in the marathon race in theOlympics. His lack of preparationtook a toll on him. In the middle ofthe race he felt so exhausted that hedecided to stop running. He thenboarded an passing vehicle whichwould take him to the finish line, over-taking other runners well ahead ofhim. On reaching the stadium he ranaround the oval to the cheer and ap-plause of the crowd who mistook himfor the winner. Other runners camejust in time to protest the victoryawarded to him. He apologized forwhat he had done.

To be greatly applauded was but awonderful and electrifying experiencefor him and this made him realizehow it would feel to be a winner. Ev-erybody loves the winner. Having hada foretaste of victory he trained hardfor the next quadrennial event. Fouryears later all the pains he had gonethrough paid off as he won the gold.

If we know how to make sacrifices inwhatever we do, many good and won-derful things will happen. If we haveHis blessings, all our efforts will notcome to naught but will be crownedwith success. But if we do not takepains, we will just be getting nowhere.If we first take the easy and enjoy-able way, we are most likely to sufferlater. This is a fact of life.

Many people today are living in com-fort, abundance or prosperity prima-rily because they have studied hard,even burning their midnight oil sothat they earned a decent or high-pay-ing job. On the other hand, there arepeople who have to toil under the sunjust to eke out a living because theyhave squandered the good opportunityto get a better or higher educationwhich would have afforded them amuch brighter future, choosing rathera life of enjoyment and pleasure withfriends. They have made a choicewhich they will just regret in the end.Life indeed is sometimes if notoftentimes what we make or the re-sult of our own decision.

A study of the CBCP shows that ouryouths have become techno centricwhich means that they are much fo-cused on computers, internet, cellphones, mp 3, etc. It is said that theway to make them Cristocentric isthrough discipline.

Yes, our salvation is something wemust work for which entails a pain-ful and difficult process. In today’sGospel Jesus is on His way to Jerusa-lem is asked by someone if only a fewpeople will be saved. In reply He says:“Try to enter the narrow gate.”

Indeed it is not easy to pass throughsomething which is small or narrow.For a team to beat a formidable one ithas to pass through the eye of a needlethey say. So entering His kingdom isnot so easy as for one person to sayhe is already saved. According to St.Augustine, God created us without usbut He can not save us without us.

Indeed there is no short cut to salva-tion. God Himself did not even cutshort His saving work He opted to beborn into a human family though ina rather supernatural way. It was notuntil after 30 years later that He be-gan His saving mission which He hadto go through a painful process, ex-periencing suffering and even deathon the cross.

Our life as a Christian has to be likeclimbing up a mountain going up andforward until we reach the peak.Many have tried to reach the top ofMt. Everest, the world’s highest peak,with some successfully getting to it

and some unable to make it. Therewas a man who climbed this tallestmountain but just as when he wasalmost there on top he fell and died.On his grave there is an epitaph whichreads: He died climbing up. We canjust imagine the difficulties and thesweats involved in mountain climb-ing. So the same is true in our spiri-tual life. We need to struggle, striveand toil hard, moving upward andforward until we reach the summit ofour salvation which is the kingdom ofGod.

Well at times a person can qualify forsomething by becoming small. Forone to qualify for a beauty contest shehas to shed off weight. For a boxer tobe able to enter another weight cat-egory he has to shed off some pounds.For one to qualify for good health hehas to reduce weight. For us to qualifyfor the kingdom of God, to be able toenter the narrow door, we must be-come small. Just as only somethingsmall can enter something narrowonly those who possess an attitude ofbeing small can enter the narrow gate.In a word, only the humble can. Po-sition, possessions or affluence canmake a person’s head grow big. Whata funny figure we cut if we have ahead like that of an ET and so howcan we get through a narrow door.

Because of the pride in us we tend tocreate a god out of our self, forgettingthat there is one true God whose willwe must follow or our life should con-form with. We turn a blind eye toother people who are in need. We feelwe a somebody, not knowing whoGod let alone who our neighbor is. Webecome self-centered or selfish andeven greedy.

Sure enough if we have manybaggage’s we can not pass the narrowdoor. So for us to enter it we shouldunload or strip our hearts of the manythings they carry which may be ourpride, selfishness and other sinful andwicked ways. We need to curtail themthough painful it may be. They needour discipline.

In the end, as we are told, when themaster of the house closes the doorthere will be people who will knockand to them he will say: “Depart fromme you evil doers, you workers of in-iquity. As St. Ireneus said: “The gloryof God is to see man alive and theglory of man is to see God.” The sadand painful thing to happen to a per-son is when he can not see the endGod who is the source of life.
