times followed by an oddarmy of 10,000 penitents .He is estimated to haveconverted 25,000 Span-ish Jews. No linguist, hewas credited with havingthe Pentecostal gift oftongues so that his wordwas understood every-where. In his last 20 yearsthis Dominican was be-lieved to have performed58,000 miracles, or eighta day. He was canonizedin 1455.

SAINT VINCENT FERRER(PRIEST)

Saint Vincent Ferrer (1350-1419) was a

Dominican priest caught up in the Great Western

Schism a period of almost forty years in which

the Church was divided between two popes, both

claiming to be the legitimate successor to St.

Peter. Vincent was born in Spain. Entering the

Dominican Order, he developed a reputation as

a brilliant scholar and powerful preacher.

After being ordained a priest by Cardinal Peter

de Luna, Vincent was chosen as prior of the

monastery in Valencia. In 1378 an Italian cardinal was elected pope, taking the name Urban VI;

however, his heavy-handed efforts at reform

alienated some of the French cardinals, who

declared his election invalid and chose as pope a

different cardinal, who took the name Clement

VII. This was very confusing for loyal Catholics;

Vincent supported Clement, while St. Catherine

of Siena backed Urban. (Most Church scholars

today agree that Urban and his successors

represented the legitimate line of the papacy.)

Vincent tried to organize Spanish support for

Clement; when Clement died, Vincents mentor

Cardinal de Luna was chosen to replace him, and

took the name Benedict XIII. Vincent served as

Benedicts confessor, and then spent ten years

doing intensive mission work in France, Spain,

and elsewhere, all the while promoting

reconciliation and unity in the Church.

Efforts were made to resolve the schism,

including the election of a compromise pope with

the idea of uniting the two factions (though this

merely increased the number of claimants to the

papal throne from two to three). Finally, a general

council was arranged in 1415, with the

understanding that all three popes would resign

and a new one be officially named. This new pope

chose the name Martin V but Benedict XIII, in

spite of Vincents urgings, refused to resign as

promised.

Vincent finally concluded that Benedict wasnt

the real pope, and publicly withdrew his support

from him; this forced Benedict to flee, eventually

ending the Great Schism. St. Vincent Ferrer

continued preaching throughout Western Europe

until his death in 1419.

Lessons

1. Even saints can disagree (as St. Vincent didwith St. Catherine) or be mistaken on important

issues.

2. Persons having great influence or prestige

must use these gifts for the well-being of the

Church, as Vincent did by withdrawing his

support from Benedict, even if it means

admitting one was mistaken.

Dear friends, There is no doubt that

an unforgettable meeting w ith Jesusis First Holy Communion, a day to beremembered as one of lifes mostbeautiful.

The Eucharist, instituted by Christ a tthe Last Supper on the night beforeHis passion, is a sacrament of theNew Covenant the greatest of thesacraments. In this sacrament, theLord becomes food for the soul underthe appearances of bread and wine.

Children receive this sacrament sol-emnly a first time in First HolyCommunion and are encouragedto receive it afterward as often aspossible in order to remain in closefriendship with Jesus.

To be able to receive Holy Commun-ion, as you know, it is necessary tohave received baptism: this is the firstof the sacraments and the one mostnecessary for salva tion. Baptism is agr eat event! In the Churchs first cen-turies, when baptism was receivedmostly by grownups, the ceremony

ended with receiving the Eucharist,and was as solemn as first Holy Com-munion is today. Later on, when bap-tism began to be given mainly to new-born babies and this is the case ofmany of you, dear children, so thatin fact you do not remember the dayof your baptism the more solemncelebration was transferred to themoment of First Holy Communion.

Every boy and every girl belongingto a Catholic family knows all aboutthis custom: First Holy Communion

is a gr eat family celebration. On thatday, together with the one who ismaking his or her First Holy Com-munion, the parents, brothers, sis-ters, relatives, godparents, and some-times also the instructors and teach-ers, generally receive the Eucharist.

The day of First Holy Communion isalso a great day of celebration in theparish. I remember as though it were yesterday when, together with theother boys and girls of my own age, Ireceived the Eucharist for the firsttime in the parish church of my town.This event is usually commemoratedin a family photo, so that it will notbe forgotten. Photos like these gener-ally remain with a person all throughhis or her life. As time goes by, peopletake out these pictures and experienceonce more the emotions of those mo-ments; they return to the purity a ndjoy experienced in that meeting w ith

Jesus, the one who out of love becamethe Redeemer of Man.

For how many children in the historyof the Church has the Eucharist beena source of spiritual strength, some-times even heroic strength! How ca nwe fa il to be reminded, for example,of holy boys and girls who lived in thefirst centuries and are still known andvenerated throughout the Church?Saint Agnes, who lived in Rome;Saint Agatha, who was martyred inSicily; Saint Tarcisius, a boy who is

rightly called the martyr of the Eu-charist because he preferred to dierather than give up Jesus, whom hewas carrying under the appearanceof bread.
