All Saints’ DayAll Saints’ Day (also known as AllHallows’ Day or Hallowmas) isthe day after All Hallows’ Eve(Hallowe’en). It is a feast daycelebrated on 1st November byAnglicans and Roman Catholics.

Remembering saints and martyrsand dedicating a specific day tothem each year has been aChristian tradition since the 4thcentury AD, but it wasn’t until609AD that Pope Boniface IVdecided to remember all martyrs.Originally 13th May wasdesignated as the Feast of AllHoly Martyrs. Later, in 837AD,Pope Gregory IV extended thefestival to remember all thesaints, changed its name to Feastof All Saints and changed the dateto 1st November.

We celebrate today the solemnityof All Saints. This invites us toturn our gaze to the immensemultitude of those who havealready reached the blessedland, and points us on the paththat will lead us to thatdestination. Pope John Paul II,All Saints’ Day 2003

REFLECTION ON THE READINGS OF THE

31ST SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME YR. A_________________REV. FR. GERARDO P. ARROYO, PAROCHIAL VICAR

Whether we like it or not, it is a fact, itis a reality that titles plays a big role inour everyday life, in almost all aspectsof our life and in every humanprofession. Take our educationalsystem. It is very clear that the academeencourages this. This is acommonplace among our institutionsof higher learning. One’s publicationsand the one’s quantity of publiclectures influence the hastening ofone’s climb in the ladder of academicposition. Thus, an ordinary lecturercan advance to an associate professorthen to the position of an “assistantprofessor” and then to the position of“full professorship.”

We may articulate that nothing iswrong with this practice. This is justnatural. Thus, it is just right andfitting for those who work hardadvance more steadily that those whowork in a lackluster manner. Thoseworked more should be rewarded fortheir hard work. What makes thisreality problematic and bad is when theconcerned player gives moreemphasis to the status and to hisposition in society setting aside the roleof the spiritual in his life. To be thenumber one tops one’s list of priorities.Consequently, the necessity to developa deeper personal relationship withGod is thrown into oblivion.

The Pharisees are the people of thiskind. Many of them are rich andoccupy the highest stratum of thesociety. As such, they arewell-educated. In short, they are the“haves” people. These, however, hasled them to be proud. They lookeddown on the rest of the members of theJewish society with contempt. Theyfeel that they are several notches higherand better than the “have nots”people- the uneducated, the poor andthe sinners. This moved Jesus tocriticize them intensely. There is nocorrespondence between what theyknow and what they practice.

If we say that the biblical texts aremeant alone for the unfaithful priestsin their calling, then we are wrong.Examining these texts carefully, God’srebuke is not directed only on the

priests, it is also for the whole faithful.“Why then, do we break faith with oneanother, violating the covenant of ourfathers?” (Mal1:10b) Jesus, thus, ineffect, is saying to us that “neitherpreaching the Gospel nor listening toit suffices to save anyone; for oursalvation to be achieved, our life hasto conform to the Gospel.”

This is an advice beyond value andvalid for anyone who meets preacherswhose life is in inconsonant with theGospel he preaches. Jesus says: “Doand observe all things whatsoeverthey tells you, but do not follow theirexample.” (Mt23:3) What reallymatters is the Word of God and not thepreacher who conveys the Word. It islike the uncontaminated drinkingwater that quench our thirst that wedrink from fountain that matters mostand not the pipe, either it be made ofbamboo, iron, bronze or gold, thatconveys the water to our kitchen.

As for the titles such as “Fathers” and“Teachers” the Jesus wants toemphasize is not too much inforbidding the use of these titles ofrespects. His stress lies more on thesaving his disciples from the sin of“pride” that fills the hearts thePharisees. These people claimed astheir rights to be called “Abbi” (myfather), Rabbi (my teacher) and Mari(my master). Jesus wants to make itclear that only God and he alone havethe rightful claim to such titles.

No other man is better than Jesus whocould measure the terrible havoc thatpride causes in our hearts ourselves forit absolutely blocks our way tosalvation. We have no reason to exaltfor all that we have has been given tous on loan. But if man humbleshimself before God and acknowledgesand rejoices his dependence on Him,God will exalt him. Jesus then is theperfect archetype of humility. He is theonly person who can claim in allsincerity: “I am meek and humble ofheart.” (Mt11:29)

How about us? Can we join Jesustruthfully claiming the meaning ofthese words?

(or state) in which those whohave died atone for their lessgrave sins before being grantedthe vision of God in Heaven(called Beatific vision).

Reasoning behind this stemsfrom the notion that when a soulleaves the body, it is not entirelycleansed from venial (minor)sins. However, through thepower of prayer and self-denial,the faithful left on earth may beable to help these souls gain theBeatific Vision they seek, bringing the soul eternal sublimehappiness.

A 7/8th century AD prayer TheOffice of the Dead is read out inchurches on All Souls’ Day. Otherrituals include the offering ofRequiem Mass for the dead, visiting family graves andreflecting on lost loved ones. InMexico, on el dia de los muertos(Day of the Dead), people takepicnics to their family graves andleave food out for their deadrelatives.

Whilst praying for the dead is anancient Christian tradition, it wasOdilo, Abbot of Cluny (France)who, in 998AD, designated aspecific day for remembering andpraying for those in the processof purification. This started as alocal feast in his monasteries andgradually spread throughout theCatholic Church towards the endof the 10th century AD.

For the souls in purgatory, waiting for eternal happinessand for meeting the Beloved is asource of suffering, because ofthe punishment due to sin whichseparates them from God. Butthere is also the certitude thatonce the time of purification isover, the souls will go to meet theOne it desires.

“I have done my best in the race. I have runthe full distance and I have kept my faith. Andnow there’s waiting for me, the victory prizebeing put right with God, which the Lord, therighteous judge will judge me on that day andnot only to me but to all those who want withlove for him to appear.” 2Timothy 4:7-8April 18, 2011 marked the beginning of my six-month journey in Iloilo towards achieving mydream of becoming a Certified PublicAccountant (CPA). Along with my baggage, Icarry within me the burning desire of becominga CPA this October 2011. I have no enoughriches / financial resources for my six-monthstay, yet I know in my heart that God will takecare of me and will never leave me nor forsakeme.

True, indeed, He is the God of mercy. He neverfailed to provide all my needs even if I do notask them in prayers. God had sent countlessinstruments to help me in my needs - my family,my extended families (DXCP / KKC Family, SMIFamily, NDDU Family, Dideles Family, ReyesFamily, Burao Family), my co-revieweesespecially my co-Iloilo girls, our reviewers (Atty.Rosada, Sir Art and Sir Chen), my boardmates,my co-volunteer catechists, the people in SitioIrrigasyon – Cagamutan Norte, the VSA-IRSstaff, Msgr. Jesus Enojo and all the people inLeganes, Iloilo.

I realized that I have nothing to prove tosomeone, I just have to prove to myself that Ican achieve my dream if I just believe in myselfand in the power of God. This is for me, for myfamily and most especially for the greater gloryof God.

When God wants to educate a man, He doesnot send him to the school of graces, but to theschool of necessities. In the lives of thestudents, we often encounter stories of difficult

moments, sleepless nights, wounded feelings, bulky requirements, stressful homework, bundles of workloads, thousands and evenmillions of computations and the like. Despiteall the odds, we just have to stand tall and say“AAL IZZ WEL!”

In my personal experience, academic life is verychallenging, yet very colorful. Each day is astruggle for me especially that I am an academicscholar. I always put pressure to myself, knowing that if I lose the scholarship, I wouldnot be able to graduate on time. I rememberthe times after I take every challengingdepartmental exams, I would immediately goto my boarding house... crying and so muchworried of the results. I would even deprivemyself from enjoying unless the results arealready published and my grades still qualifyfor the scholarship.

Aside from maintaining my scholarship, I hadto spend time for part-time job. I had been ababy sitter, a convent assistant and an assistantto the Finance Officer of an organization.Sometimes, I would question God why do I haveto get a part time job in order to support mydaily expenses and school requirements, whilesome are enjoying their college life freely asthey could?

There even came a point in my life where I feltlike quitting, especially when things are startingto hurt me. I wanted to leave where it is, beforethe pain gets worse. But once I remember howmuch I have prayed, how much I really wantedit and why I have fought for it in the first place, hope comes back into my heart, and that’swhy... I have come this far.

I believe that each of us has our own stories ofperseverance at various levels. After all thosechallenges, why were we able to overcomethose, while thousands were overwhelmed bytheirs? It’s simply because of our ATTITUDEtowards those circumstances and that werefused to hold on to the common excuses offailure. I turned the stumbling blocks into

stepping stones, realizing that I could notdetermine every circumstance in life, but I coulddetermine the CHOICE OF ATTITUDE towardsevery circumstance.

As a result, I graduated Magna Cum Laude andsurprisingly a recipient of St. MarcellinChampagnat and Community Service awards, which I consider a bonus gift from God. Becauseof this, I was given full tuition fee discount formy review at Visayas School of Accountancy -Iloilo Review School. Aside from the review, Ithank God for giving me the chance to sharemy time and God’s word to the people in SitioIrrigasyon through the Mayflower Catechesis,as well as increase my faith in God throughseries of fellowship with boardmates and co-reviewees.

After six months of preparation, by God’s grace,I was able to pass the October 2011 CPA BoardExam. I succeed because we chose the rightattitude towards every circumstance. Mostespecially, I succeed because of the DivineIntervention and overwhelming guidance by ourALMIGHTY. He has been and will always bemy calculator, who ADDS comfort in times ofhardships; SUBTRACTS fears; DIVIDESblessings; and MULTIPLIES joy! =)

May this sharing be an inspiration to allespecially to every student to take responsibilityfor learning, to study smart, to value education,to share time, talents and treasures and tochoose the right attitude towards everycircumstance.

As we continue our journey, let us keep the faithand focus, let us persevere, and keep thedesires of reaching our dreams burning. Mostespecially, let us all continue our journey withsimplicity, humility, modesty, peace, love, undying faith and happiness.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank allthe people in Leganes for being part of mywonderful stay here in Iloilo. As I go back toMindanao, I will carry with me all the wonderfulmoments and experiences with all of you. “Indiko gid makalimtan kamo tanan, yara kamotanan sa ako tagipusuon. MADAMO GID NGASALAMAT SA TANAN!”

Thank you very much and may God bless usall always!

REV. FR. GERARDO P. ARROYO

Parochial Vicar

Suno sa CBCP’s Episcopal on Prison Pastoral Care (ECPPC) halos angkalabanan nga krimen nga nagakahanabo ginahimo sang aton mgapamatan-on. Ini nga mga krimen amo ang rape, pagpatay, pagpangawat, drug addiction kag madamo pa kag ini nagsaka sa tagsa ka tuig.Ini ang ginasiling sang Simbahan sa sining selebrasyon: In keeping withthe call of our Lord to be in solidarity with our incarcerated brothers andsisters (Mt. 25:35-36), we invite you to share with us the joys and hopes ofa holistic rehabilitation that goes beyond punishment for the offender. Onceevery year, we make it a point to remind all our people to remember ourbrothers and sisters who languish in our prisons and jails. It is quite easy toforget them as fellow member s of the human society. After all, to our mindsthey are derelicts now suffering from their sins or offenses against societyand our laws have seen to it that they pay their transgressions. PrisonAwareness Sunday celebration also reminds us that the main goal of theimprisonment should not be avenge or punish, but rather to reform anerring members of the society. Not punishment with harshness andbrutality or apathy but reformation by making an offender realize his faultswith mercy and compassion make amends and correct any injustice. Inaddition, let us urge our faithful to consider prisons and jails not as placesfor punishment but as sites for the rehabilitation and restoration of brokenrelationships. Ang Simbahan nagasiling pa gid: Every year we celebrate PrisonAwareness Sunday to remind us that our brothers and sisters who arebehind bars are included in the Kingdom of God. The prisoners are peoplewe often forget and perhaps we do not think about. But they are still ourbrothers and sisters who like everybody else Jesus wants us tounderstand and accept. Jesus wants us to help them see their mistakesand be sorry for them and to right the wrong that they have done. He wantsus to be bearers of Hope and Love. Today’s reading reminds us that “Godis our Father and that One God created all of us.”The best example of this is: “Once when Pope John Paul II visited theprisoners of a jail in Rome, one inmate approached him, and with bowedhead, confided his offense. He said, “Will I ever be forgiven by God?”Without saying any word, the Pope embraced him. That said it all. Godnever gives up on the worst of sinners and criminals.Today is Prison Awareness Sunday. This annual event designated by theChurch serves to focus our attention on convicts who are serving terms injail, paying for their crimes. Likewise, we remember the wardens, guards, and other jail management personnel in their difficult, lonely, anddangerous work.
