It’s well renowned that recruitment consultants work long hours but Chris is adamant that if you’re career driven, ambitious and keen to reap the financial rewards, then this field is certainly worth it. “You can work for another recruitment firm that perhaps has a laissez-faire attitude and demands less hours but you certainly won’t receive the same career opportunities or financial rewards that we gain at Oliver James.” Chris’s senior position means he is heavily involved in leading the business development of our New York office, establishing relationships with new clients and driving the business forward. Alongside being a rewarding part of the role, it’s also understandably challenging. “To put this into perspective, when I joined the company, I was benefitting from the established relationships built by Oliver James in the London market. At the time, I had little appreciation for how much work had gone into the business development side and I certainly took this for granted. When I went to work overseas in the Asia Pacific market, it was definitely an eye opener. I had to build my business relationships from scratch and utilise skills that I hadn’t necessarily touched upon previously. Seeing my team now benefit from relationships I’ve established across various markets is incredibly rewarding.”

Sarah joined Oliver James Associates Manchester in 2012. She was previously on the Marks & Spencer Graduate Scheme, managing a team of 35 in-store. Why recruitment? “I actually ran into an old friend who introduced me to James Rogers, Director of Oliver James Associates. It was then that I felt inspired to switch career paths and apply for a recruitment position. I’ve never looked back; the opportunities here have been truly incredible. When you hit the targets and see the financial rewards coming in, it’s amazing.” Sarah’s biggest motivator is to be seen as “a credible member of staff” and “the best recruitment consultant at Oliver James”. In terms of where she sees herself in the future; “There’s definite growth in my market and scope to grow a team under me. One day, I’d like to be a Director and on the company Board.” The most important thing for Sarah’s career? “Seeing how far I can get!”Our ‘work hard play hard’ culture is instilled from the top. “Our Directors, Oliver and James, work the same hours as us, socialise with us and always take time to offer advice and guidance. I genuinely feel that they care about my career and helping me to achieve my goals.”
