Castle Combe’s 50th Anniversary

Toshiba have been proud to sponsor G4 Environmental Control Ltd’s Motorcycle. They recently competed at Castle Combe’s 50th Anniversary which had well known motorcycle rider Carl Fogarty and other celebrities presenting trophies. We’re very pleased to say that they have finished 3rd overall in the Championship.

Well done guys!

Zero tolerance on F-Gas

Distributor Cool Designs Ltd, which operates from Sunderland, Warrington and Glasgow, refuses to sell air conditioning systems or spares to businesses that are not F-gas registered.

Managing director Darrel Birkett, says, “We believe that manufacturers, wholesalers and agents have a responsibility and duty of care to ensure that only those who are registered with Refcom, or equivalent certification bodies, are allowed to handle, install or repair their equipment. As a matter of policy, we will not sell to any business that can’t provide evidence of being F-Gas registered, and I believe this should be a requirement by law.”

Mr Birkett also feels that it is the distributors and wholesalers who are ideally placed to help police and control the installation and handling of products containing refrigerants.

“Tighter control of the sale of products containing refrigerants should be implemented. By putting more focus on the seller of the equipment this takes away a further burden from the contractor who already has the expense of their F-Gas certification.“

Toshiba consults on future plans atstar-studded Twickenham conferenceToshiba and our distributors rolled out the red carpet for major end users and contrac-tors at the recent annual conference, held at Twickenham Stadium. It provided an opportunity to share current and future plans for developing the air conditioning range and related technical and commercial support services. We also invited feedback on how we could improve our offer-ing in the future. There was a briefing on the latest F-Gas changes and what they mean for install-ers and end users. This included a detailed review of the refrigerant options facing the industry as the forthcoming phase-down of high global warming refrigerants begins to bite. The positives and negatives of new and alternative refrigerants were highlighted as potential replacements for high GWP HFC refrigerants. There were also discussions on how to achieve optimum energy efficiency and environmental performance. David Dunn, Toshiba general manager, said: “We have not yet made a final deci-sion on which route to adopt. However, it is important to get customer feedback on our preferred solution for the short and long term strategy.“The aim at this stage is to keep people updated on the issues that need to be considered, and obtain feedback from our customers on their main concerns .” There were also sessions on the company’s plans to develop the award-winning refriger-ant protection and leak prevention system, the implications of the ECO Design Directive, expanding air conditioning training, and our latest BIM initiative (see back page). Mr Dunn reported on the growth of air conditioning sales achieved by Toshiba over the past four years. “Our growth is a reflec-tion of the quality and innovation embodied in Toshiba products, the high level of support offered in the market, and the excellent rela-tionships we have with our customers.” The conference concluded with a gala din-ner in Twickenham’s VIP suite overlooking the pitch, with sporting legends from the world of Rugby joining as invited guests. Will Carling, former England Rugby captain, led the celebrity line-up, which also included rug-by legends Scott Quinnell, Phil Vickery, Matt Dawson, Zin zan Brooke, and Neil Back.

Toshiba has opened two new air condition-ing training centres in recent months, one at its Leatherhead headquarters and a new facility in Manchester to serve the North. They are part of a new network of 13 train-ing centres being opened at Toshiba and distributor locations across the country. The new Toshiba centres will operate all-year-round, with a scheduled programme of advertised courses, supported by bespoke training to meet specific installer and end user needs. Between them, the two new centres will have capacity to cater for more than 1000 engineers a year. Added to the capacity of other centres in the network, it gives Toshiba the ability to train more than 2000 people each year, making it one of the most signifi

cant providers of air conditioning training in the UK. Engineers are given hands-on experience of installing, commissioning and servicing the latest technology, including VRF air con-ditioning, electronic controls, leak detection and digital inverters. It includes training in the installation and use of Toshiba’s award-winning refrigerant management and protection systems, that offer complete reassurance for building owners and occupants. The North of England training centre, based at Middleton in Manchester, is equipped with a fully operational RD6 leak detection system. For details of courses and to book, email: [email protected]

Toshiba has developed a complete Building Information Modelling (BIM) support solution for consultants, contractors and designers. It covers our full range of SMMSI, SHRMi and Mini SMMSi VRF outdoor units , includ-ing flow selector boxes and the full range of indoor units. The BIM package provides an accurate and easy-to-use digital representation of Toshiba’s air conditioning systems, that can be applied in standard BIM models of new and refur-bished buildings, speeding up the design process and helping accurately to predict building performance. The introduction of BIM is central to aiding companies to fall in line with the govern-ment’s four-year strategy to improve effi-ciency and reduce costs in the UK construction industry. The aim is to introduce 3D collaborative BIM to all new construction projects by 2016, with all project data encapsulated in electronic form, speeding up projects, reducing capital costs and helping to cut carbon emissions from buildings by 20 per cent. David Dunn, general manager of Toshiba UK, says: “We very much support the drive towards BIM-based design, as there are huge gains to be reaped by all concerned. For designers and contractors it speeds up project planning, and enables quick and accurate changes that save time on site. “For clients and end users, it helps ensure installations are delivered on time and to budget, and provides assurance that design conditions can be achieved for a building. These twin planning and predictive aspects are what makes BIM so powerful.”

Leak protection shortlisted in RAC Awards

Toshiba’s leak isolation and total manage-ment system has been shortlisted for the Air Conditioning Innovation of the Year Award, in the Cooling Industry Awards 2014. The system provides complete assurance for building occupants and end users. In the event of a leak, it locates and isolates the leak and, if deemed serious, initiates an automatic pump-down of refrigerant to prevent further leakage. It attracts BREEAM points as proof of the environmental credentials of a building, and is being adopted by a growing list of national end users, keen to eliminate the possibility of refrigerant leaks from their estates.

Conventional approaches shut down the entire system in the event of a leak, impact-ing occupants throughout a building until the source of the leak can be identified and repaired. Toshiba’s system means that only the im-mediate area served by the compromised circuit suffers loss of service. Winners will be announced on 24 September.

NewsletterA bespoke Toshiba air conditioning system is be-

ing used to cool a state-of-the-art transportable

MRI scanner, the first of its kind to be developed

by Toshiba Medical Systems.

The mobile facility enables high resolution

scans of individual limbs or the whole body to

be carried out on location. Vital cooling for the

diagnostic unit has been provided by Just Air

Conditioning Ltd, working with Toshiba distribu-

tor AMP.

Modified VRF unit

The supplier provided a modified vertically-

ducted VRF unit, twinned with a split system

condensing unit, to deliver the cooling required

for the mobile facility’s patient examination

room.

Wayne Raven, who headed up the project for

Just Air Conditioning, said: “Due to the powerful

magnetic fields generated in the examination

area, it is not possible to site air conditioning

within the room itself.

“We therefore designed a special ducted

system to ensure patients and staff remain

comfortable at all times.”

At the heart of the scanner is a 6 tonne

electromagnet cooled by liquid helium, linked

to sophisticated computer analysis equipment

to give very high resolution scans of limbs or a

patient’s whole body.

Toshiba’s new generation Daiseikai 8 air condi-

tioning system sets a new industry benchmark

for efficiency and performance.

The advanced inverter-driven heat pump is

designed to deliver market-leading efficiency

and comfort for building occupants, and boasts

the lowest noise levels for a commercial air

conditioning indoor unit in its class.

In addition to a triple A+ energy rating

(A+A+A+) for both cooling and heating, the

new high wall Daiseikai units have a quiet

mode that enables them to operate down to

20dB(A), equivalent to the ticking of a wrist

watch in an otherwise silent room. For compari-

son, a whisper is rated at around 30dB(A) and

the sound of a hushed library at 40dB(A).

The performance improvements have been

made possible by the introduction of several

new technologies, which work in combination

in the Daiseikai system. A new type of vector-

controlled power inverter converts electrical

current into a smooth sine-curve, enabling

more efficient operation of the DC motor. A

redesigned heat exchanger optimises thermo-

dynamic efficiency in both cooling and heating

modes.

Daiseikai’s ability to match output to very low

levels of load helps boost energy efficiency. This

means performance can be precisely controlled

to provide only as much cooling or heating as

required, significantly reducing energy use at

part- and low-load conditions.

It will be available from the beginning of

XXXXXXX, 2014.
