    Letter

It has been a mixed year for XOOPS.

Looking back over 2007, we have learned what we can dowith XOOPS and what we can not, we have learned thegood way and the bad way of an open source project andwe are looking forward to the best way for XOOPS.

Through a painful process with lots of changes, finallyeach of us knows what to do in 2008, for personal life, forXOOPS and for open source.

2007 has been the year of change, 2008 will be the yearof revival.

    Sincerely,

    Taiwen JiangThe XOOPS Project Leader

    XOOPS 6th Anniversary

TEXT : Julio Napur PHOTO: XOOPS Official Logos

It has been more than six years since RC1 version was published.

The XOOPS Project was launched byKazumi Ono in 2001 and since that timeOno has been largely focusing much ofhis time in XOOPS Cube Project, anotherfork of XOOPS. However The XOOPScommunity has continued making steady

    progress.

To get some perspective on XOOPS'shistory, I talked to Taiwen Jiang and someXOOPS contributors and did someresearch.

Kazumi Ono announced the eXtensibleObject Oriented Portal System givingXOOPS its start on December 06, 2001according to the sourceforge.net data.According to Ono, XOOPS 1 was

originally based off of PHPNuke 4.4.1 andMyPHPNuke 1.8.5. and

"About 70 - 80 percent ofthe code has been totallyrewritten from the groundup. We use object-orientedPHP throughout the wholepackage, thus the name

XOOPS. "XOOPS was one of the first open sourceapplications to adopt Object OrientedProgramming in a programminglanguage that didn't supportmethodology efficiently at that time ofPHP 4.

Thus, the first edition of XOOPS didn't workfunction correctly.

XOOPS 2 had better performance, it marked thebeginning of using a Smarty Template Engine, XOOPS 2also implemented a new debugging system andautomation of module configuration.

XOOPS 2 was a new and important application release

that is at the heart of the core for the currentdevelopment branch (2.0.X).

    Where's XOOPS going?

It's interesting to look back at where XOOPS came from,

and what's been accomplished since its humblebeginnings in 2001 -- even-though most users are moreinterested today in where XOOPS will be going, than itshumble beginnings.

I think we've made tremendous progress since then.(also, at times we've made absolute nonsense)

"In 2007, the Core development teamhad mainly worked on maintenance ofthe legacy system. In 2008 we will focuson the next generation of XOOPS, theXOOPS 3.0 branch which has beendesigned for years. Now it is the time tomake it ready for public. Of course, we'lmaintain the current code base, whichis defined as 2.3 branch."
