work on time, as marks will be given for the same.

TOPIC : DROUGHT / WATER SCARCITY:-

India is a tropical country receiving good amount of rainfall and also has ample ground

water reserve. But still it finds itself in the midst of an acute water crisis as several areas of

the country are facing severe drought like situation.

Now read the given article and answer the following questions :

An architect and urban planner by profession, Anagha Paranjape-Purohit, a resident of Bhusari Colony, Paud

Road,Pune, has been conscious about judicious use and conservation of water for many years. On an individual

level, not only has she been practising rainwater harvesting in her house but has also been adopting new methods to

save water.

Anagha has set up her sink in such a way that it has a tub underneath and therefore, while washing utensils, the

water gets collected in a tub and then that water is used in watering the plants in her garden. Not only this, while

washing clothes, she lets her washing machine outlet rest in a tub and then reuses that water for plants.

Besides, she has her own consulting organisation, VKe Environmental, where they design „green‟ buildings.

Operational since 2009, they have completed numerous residential and commercial building projects where they

have fitted low-water flow fixtures, that can save up to 30-40 per cent water than conventional buildings.

According to Anagha, by taking these small steps at home, she feels good that no water in her house is going waste.

“Watering plants with this water has not disturbed its growth. In fact, the food particles in the water make them

grow even better,” she added.

“It‟s unfortunate that people take up such measures only when a severe drought situation arises. If we follow the

water conservation practices everyday, we will face no water shortage in the country,” she said.

QUESTIONS:

1. Conduct a research on the problem and enumerate some of the causes that have triggered

this crisis.

2. As a sensitive citizens of our country, suggest some steps and measures that can be taken

to solve or minimize this problem.

3. Also suggest some ways in which people can be sensitized on this issue.
