1. PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME MESSAGE
Dear Year One Rafflesians, A very warm welcome to Raffles Girls' School. Each and every one of you is here because you chose to be, and because you can bring something new and exciting to this vibrant learning community that is RGS. The Raffles Programme at RGS In RGS, we believe in providing our students with an all-‐rounded education to prepare them for the future. The Raffles Programme at RGS offers an enriched and differentiated curriculum and learning experience for all students. By your whole-‐hearted involvement in The Raffles Programme, you will have opportunities to be nurtured as a Person, Thinker, Leader and Pioneer. The Programme’s broad-‐based curriculum aims to help you to develop the requisite skills and values for life; it also provides opportunities for you to demonstrate innovative leadership and to make a difference in the lives of others. The RGS environment and ethos are also integral elements of the RGS Programme, and in themselves formative and unforgettable experiences in every RGS girl’s passage through the school. To kickstart this exciting journey, our teachers and student leaders have lined up a host of events to welcome you into the RGS family. The following sections provide important information on these events. The RGS Orientation Programme The Year One Orientation Programme will begin on 2 January 2015. It is a long-‐standing tradition in RGS for our Student Leaders to take on this role of welcoming and initiating the new juniors into the school culture and programmes. The theme for this year's orientation is "One Heart, One Voice". It signals the importance of every member of the Rafflesian family being connected and united in our mission to nurture daughters of a better age. It emphasises the notion of "whole" over "parts", and the idea of relationship building and synergy as we collectively push the boundaries of education. Moreover, it is aligned to our country's call for national unity as Singaporeans celebrate our golden jubilee next year. As each RGS girl enters the school for the first time, there is ignited in her that sense of excitement and wonder when she encounters the school's rich heritage. The days ahead will see her interact with her sisters in learning, discover her sense of belonging in this new community, develop compassion for those around her, and eventually find the strength to make a difference to her peers, the community and the nation.

An overview of the CCA Programme at RGS will be presented and an exciting CCA exhibition will follow. The Orientation Programme also includes an over-‐night camp in school from 8 to 9 January 2015. RGS will hold the Y1 School-‐Parents Meeting (SPM) on 9 January 2015 for your parents/guardians. After the SPM, RGS and Parents for RGS Association will host an Orientation Tea, which be followed immediately by the Badge Initiation Ceremony. We warmly invite your parents/guardians to the event. D. How We Will Communicate With You
RGS believes that active communication is key to building a strong school-‐home partnership and utilises the following official channels of communication to share information with you on a regular basis. (a) Intranet Portal -‐ RGS INET
Information on school activities, events and programmes can be found on RGS’ intranet portal (INET) at http://inet.rgs.edu.sg. Academic assessment results can also be assessed once they have been e-‐published. User IDs and passwords would have been issued together with this Orientation Information package.
14
6. INFORMATION THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW NOW
(b) Schools’ Notification and Attendance App (SNAAPP)
RGS utilises SNAAPP, a mobile application developed by vendor Mggsoftware Pte Ltd, to send important messages to parents and to notify parents when their daughter is absent or late for school. All notifications and/or messages through SNAAPP are school-‐initiated. Parents with smartphones can download the free app from the Apple App Store or the Android Play Store. Alternatively, a web version (http://mggsoftware.com/snaapp) is also available.
Instructions on how to set up the app and your user profile(s) will be made available on INET.
(c) Letters and Emails
Throughout the year, students and parents will receive letters and emails from the RGS staff. All official letters sent by RGS staff in an official capacity will be accompanied by the RGS letterhead and will be sent through a member of the school’s Senior Management. All official email correspondence will be sent from an official RGS email account (ending with “@rgs.edu.sg” or “@rafflesgirlssch.edu.sg”).
(d) Announcements and Notices
Announcements and notices for school-‐endorsed activities will be circulated to the students via their class trays or noticeboards. The school stamp will mark these materials.
E. Staying Safe on the Roads Around RGS
During the start and end times of school sessions, there is usually heavy traffic in the vicinity of our school. As teenagers are vulnerable road users with limited experience using the roads, it is of paramount concern to keep school zones safe. The safety of school zones requires the joint effort of authorities, schools, parents, motorists and the community. Road safety is everyone's responsibility so please adhere to the following guidelines: (a) Campus Access for Parents’ Cars
Before the start of each school day, the main gate will be opened from 6.30am to 7am. Once the gate is closed at 7am sharp, all students should alight along the pavement at Anderson Road. For the safety of all road users, drivers are advised to pull up along the kerb in the left-‐hand lane, in order to let their passengers alight safely and not stop in front of the main gate or in the right hand lane. When it rains, gates will be kept opened so students may alight at the porch.
15
6. INFORMATION THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW NOW
The campus and its driveways will not be accessible to all parents’ cars between 7am and 4pm from Mondays to Fridays, unless parents have an official meeting with school personnel during those hours. This is to ensure that vehicular traffic at the carpark is kept to a minimum when human traffic is at its peak. Parents who wish to pick their daughters up after school or CCA can do so from kerbside along Anderson Road before 4pm or from the porch after 4pm. This is to facilitate student activities within the Tan Leng Neo Parade Square and to minimise the risk of traffic accidents within the campus.
(b) Driving up to the porch
As the driveway from the main gate to the porch cannot accommodate many cars at one time, all passengers should alight along Anderson Road rather than at the porch during 6.30am to 7am and after 4pm. This might ease traffic congestion significantly within campus and the surrounding roads. If you are alighting at the porch, gather your belongings beforehand and alight quickly. All drivers should exit the school immediately once their passengers have alighted.
(c) Driving in school zones
All drivers must slow down and drive more carefully when they are in the school zone. Drivers should be extra vigilant to watch out for students crossing the road as they may be blocked from view due to their height.
(d) Be a Safe Road User
Learn to look out for potential safety hazards when crossing the road. Using your mobile devices while walking distracts you from being alert to the dangers in your surroundings and puts your life at risk. Alight only at safe and proper drop-‐off points. This ensures not only your safety but also the safety of other road users.
16
7. FINANCIAL INFORMATION FOR YOUR PARENTS
A. School Fees and Charges
(a) School Fees, Supplementary Fees & Other Charges
School fees, supplementary fees & other charges are payable on a bi-‐monthly and bi-‐annually basis respectively. The applicable school fees levied are based on the student’s citizenship status and eligibility for MOE scholarship. You must inform the school’s General Office immediately if there is a change of your citizenship status as this may have implications on school fees subsidies available to you. (c) Competitions / Workshops / Local & Overseas Educational Trips
To enrich the students’ understanding and appreciation of the discipline and motivate them to strive for excellence in the international arena, RGS offers our students a wide range of local and international platforms to achieve the desired outcomes beyond the curriculum and classroom.
Activities/trips which are compulsory may receive subsidies from the school. The cost of non-‐compulsory activities/trips will be borne fully by the participants. Details of these programmes will be made known to students by the respective teachers through the school Intranet portal -‐ iNet or school letter. The GIRO deduction will fall on the 26th of every month or the next working day, where applicable.
(d) Billing and Payment

An administrative charge of $12 will be levied for each unsuccessful GIRO deduction. For any unsuccessful GIRO deductions, there will be repeated GIRO attempts on the 26th of every month for 2 consecutive months. If it fails in the next month there are arrears exceeding 2 consecutive months’ fees, all outstanding fees plus the administrative charges associated with the collection of such unpaid balance must be settled immediately by cash, cheque or fund transfer via internet banking. You can email [email protected] for the details of the school’s bank account.
(f) Late Payments/Delinquent Accounts
All fees payable must be settled within 2 months via Interbank GIRO or before the commencement of the programmes. For any overdue fees, the students’ Form Teachers and/or Teachers-‐in-‐charge will be notified of the outstanding amounts. For delinquent accounts, we seek to establish open communication lines to search for solutions and resolve issues where possible. Students may also be called upon by the school’s Bursar who oversees the Finance Department. However in instances where this is not successful, the school would be obliged to pursue a legal means of recovery. These could take the form of serving notice of debt which might constitute a record of debt encumbrance, thereby having an unfavourable impact on future obligations.
(g) Fees for New Students/Students Leaving School
Annual fee payable is spread over 12 months of the academic year. Students who join on or before 5th February will have to pay fees for January. Those who leave on or after 5th October will have to pay fees for November and December. In the event that you are leaving RGS, you are required to provide one month’s notice to the school. School fees must be paid till the end of the month and any outstanding amount must be settled in full before departure.
For enrolment of new students, there will be no pro-‐ration of fees as it is currently charged on a monthly basis.
All fees paid are non-‐refundable.

C. Giving to RGS
Singapore looks to RGS for the next generation of fine women leaders in diverse fields. RGS is where young ladies develop not just a sense of self but a deep passion for inquiry and excellence and a rooted determination to engage in meaningful service to the community. It is our desire that no deserving child qualifying for a place in RGS be turned away due to financial concerns. At the same time, in order to provide for the growing needs of the students and the school, a new campus is in the pipeline. Giving to RGS could be through the RGS Filiae Fund and/or the RGS New Campus Development Fund. Please refer to the accompany set of application forms if you are interested in giving to RGS.
(a) RGS Filiae Fund
The RGS Filiae Fund provides for:
(i) Financial assistance to deserving students in areas which
include, but are not limited to, the following:
• School and Supplementary fees • Various programme fees include student/talent
development and enrichment programmes, overseas service learning, overseas competition/study trips etc.
• CCA Co-‐payments by student

(ii) Scholarship for deserving students (iii) Speech Day awards & bursary etc. to deserving students
(b) RGS New Campus Development Fund
RGS will have a new home along Braddell Road in 2019. It is RGS’ aim to develop a campus that is future-‐ready to take on the dynamic education landscape, a campus that is not just a school but a ‘home’ for aspiring girls; and a campus that actively seeks to reach out to its immediate and larger community. The new premises will provide for the space and facilities required to deliver innovative curriculum and programmes and better support the school’s teaching and learning goals. As we embark on planning for the next phase of our journey at the new campus, we seek support towards our New Campus Development Fund.

8. LEARNING IN RGS
A. Your Individual Device Ownership – RGS 1:1
RGS 1:1 was first introduced in 2012 to create the learning environment where pedagogy is integrated with technology, with the goal of equipping the RGS girl with 21st century life-‐skills for the digital world. In 2015, RGS will achieve the status of a full 1:1 school where every student will have their own ICT device. The Apple platform was chosen for the RGS 1:1 because Apple has been at the forefront of Infocommunication and Technology (ICT) enhanced education and research. Apple understands the needs of the classroom and has qualified Apple educators sharing pedagogy with schools. The choice of this platform also enables the school to provide quality on-‐site support to both staff and students. (a) Device Purchase
Currently, Apple offers five models of MacBooks for sale. They differ mainly in terms of screen size, processing speed, display quality and weight. A comparison of these models is found on the Apple website (http://www.apple.com/sg/mac/compare/notebooks.html). While the vendor appointed by Apple will be present on Reporting Day to demonstrate the computers, the MacBook can be purchased from any retailer of your choice. Do note that on-‐site servicing in RGS is only applicable to computers purchased from the Apple-‐appointed vendor. Please bear in mind the following during your purchase: • A model that has a display size of at least 13.3-‐inch (diagonal) is
recommended for comfortable viewing. • Office for Mac 2011 is necessary for the purpose of teaching and
learning in the classroom. • AppleCare is an extended warranty programme offered by
Apple. An Apple authorized technician is stationed in RGS to provide service and support to MacBooks purchased from the Apple-‐appointed vendor (within 3 years warranty).
• Laptop insurance is available but the purchase of such insurance is optional.
If the student already owns a MacBook with the above requirements, there is no need to purchase a new set.
(b) Financial Assistance for Device Ownership
(Information is accurate as of 12 December 2014)
Only Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible for the financial assistance schemes for computer ownership offered by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).
24
8. LEARNING IN RGS
For families where the household income is less than or equal to $3,000 or per capita (PCI) is less than or equal to $800, the IDA NEU PC Plus Programme will offer assistance in the purchase of a brand new MacBook through a co-‐payment scheme. For families where the household income is less than or equal to $2,300 or PCI is less than or equal to $600, additional funding under the IDA iNSPIRE programme will assist the students with the co-‐payment in exchange for community service hours. Students must first submit an online application for Financial Assistance Schemes via the RGS website (refer to page 21 of this booklet). Those who meet the NEU PC Plus Programme eligibility criteria on monthly household income and reapplication after 4 years from the last ICT device deployment will receive an invitation letter and hardcopy application form from RGS to apply for the IDA financial assistance schemes for computer ownership. RGS will purchase and deploy the MacBook to these successful applicants or after the relevant community service hours are completed within 6 months. For students who are eligible for the MOE Independent School Bursary but not eligible for the IDA sponsorship, they may loan a MacBook from school on a yearly basis. For more information on RGS 1:1, please visit our website (http://www.rgs.edu.sg/rgs-‐1-‐1/rgs-‐1-‐1) or email Mr Alvin Tan, Head/Learning Resources & Technology, at [email protected]

9. DEVELOPING YOURSELF HOLISTICALLY
A. Attending Peer Support Leaders’ Sessions
The Peer Support Leaders (PSLs) aim to provide non-‐discriminatory and sustained support to all RGS students, especially the Year Ones, through peer-‐mentorship. PSLs conduct classroom sessions to equip Year Ones with important skills to deal with common socio-‐emotional issues they may face. This will help you make a smooth transition to secondary school life in RGS. The sessions also provide opportunities to foster stronger relationships with your classmates, as well as inculcate positive values which guide decision-‐making in life. PSL Sessions make up the other post-‐Orientation extension program and are therefore compulsory school for all Year Ones and take precedence over external activities (e.g. external training sessions, enrichment classes). In accordance with school policy, absences will need to be supported with Medical Certificates (MCs) or formal letters of authorisation (e.g. Music examinations, competitions). Parents’ letters with special requests (e.g. Early dismissal) will be accepted after PSB teachers’ careful review of such cases.
B. Participating in House Practices
The House system is an important part of the RGS history. Participation in House Practices (HP) and other House events like the Inter-‐House Games (IHGs) build a sense of school culture and identity, as well as develop resilience and good sportsmanship in all RGS students. Here are some of the House programmes your daughter / ward will be involved in: (a) House Practices (HPs)
HPs facilitate the transition of Year Ones into RGS by inculcating a sense of belonging to their respective Houses. Participation in HPs encourages House pride and builds House spirit, strengthens bonds and develops teamwork amongst House members. HPs also aim to provide opportunities for character and leadership development. As one of two post-‐Orientation extension programs, HPs are compulsory for all Year Ones and take precedence over external activities (e.g. external training sessions, enrichment classes). In accordance with school policy, therefore, absence from HPs must be supported by Medical Certificates (MCs) or formal letters of authorisation (e.g. Music examinations, competitions). Parents’ letters with special requests (e.g. early dismissal) will only be accepted after House Teachers’ careful review of such cases.

9. DEVELOPING YOURSELF HOLISTICALLY
(b) Mass Dance Batch Project (Open House and Sport Fest)
The Year Ones will play a crucial role in this project which culminates in a performance at the 2015 RGS Open House, as well as during Sports Fest. This project is an opportunity for Year Ones to show their appreciation of the rest of the school community, in return for the care and guidance they have received since their admission into RGS.

10. TRANSITING WELL TO SECONDARY SCHOOL
For Daddy and Mummy, the RGS Parents…
So your daughter is starting secondary school … What can you do in the next 2 weeks? The next year will be a time of change for you and your daughter. One way to help adjust to these changes is by building your daughter’s confidence through positive reinforcement. They don’t have to have done anything particularly special; telling your daughter that you value them and appreciate their qualities – like how well they help around the house or how thoughtful they are – will go a long way to building and maintaining your daughter’s confidence. Talk to your daughter about going to secondary school regularly over the next 2 weeks.
• Ask them what they think it will be like. • What are their expectations of school? • Are they expecting to enjoy themselves? Do they feel safe and at ease? • What do they think their teachers will be like? • What do they think the other girls in the classes will be like? • What are they most looking forward to?
Listening to your daughter talk may give you some indication of their concerns. If they have concerns, discuss their options. Let them know that you take these seriously and are there to help. Another way is to help them establish some positive habits:
• Adjust their waking hours especially if they have had irregular bedtimes over the long holidays.
• Familiarise them to the route they will take to school and home each day. • Establish some personal organization habits. The more you have expected her
to take responsibility for herself at home, the more likely she will manage herself and her belongings in school. However, she is just out of primary school and will need time to adjust and adapt to taking greater responsibility for herself. Do guide her in taking baby steps towards acquiring these habits.
When the year starts, do refer to the school intranet for more resources how you can help your daughter transit successfully from primary to secondary school. On the same note, your daughter will attend sessions to equip her with the skills and knowledge to confidently manage life in RGS. 10. TRANSITING WELL TO SECONDARY SCHOOL
For you, the RGS Girl…
So you are starting secondary school … Next year will be an exciting year. You will go to a new school and be exposed to a bunch of new experiences. There are all sorts of stories about what happens when you move. It is normal to be scared but almost everyone settles in fine. It will take you time to get used to the changes and you may not feel at home straight away but you have a host of people supporting and cheering you on! For starters, we have a few tips just to ease you in.
1) Do read the section for your parents and work with them to help you start the year well.
2) You may need to pick up some organizational skills as secondary school does entail more areas you need to be responsible for. If you want to remember everything, it helps to write it down and plan ahead.
3) Check your schedule and get ready all the things you need the next day the
night before. Yes, even your uniform! You have more stuff to bring in every day than you used to have in a whole week. There are five or more lessons a day. Each lesson has its own set of books and its own homework.
4) You'll get homework regularly and even if you don’t, it’s a good idea to review
the day’s lessons or read ahead. You will have quite a busy schedule typically. Try to keep up. However, if you do fall behind letting your teacher know before the lesson is a good idea.
5) You'll have more teachers in the first week than in your whole time at
primary school. Each one will have their own expectations but not to worry, they will give you time to adjust.
6) If you are worried about making friends, do remember that in RGS, students
come from many schools all across Singapore and almost all are strangers to each other. A pleasant smile and a warm ‘hello’ can start a wonderful friendship. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
If all that has happened is bewildering so far, not to worry! Your teachers and seniors have organized lots of sessions over the course of the year to provide the necessary support for you. See you on the first day of school – for the ride of a lifetime J
